I've been sat on a voucher for lunch for 2 at Hispi since the Kickstarter ended in July. With a use by date of 2017 I wasn't in a huge rush to use it but, with my mum visiting Manchester for her birthday recently, it seemed like the perfect time to use it.
The space is beautiful, set just at the edge of Didsbury Village, with bright dining areas split across two levels, giving it a contemporary but cozy feeling. Despite being late (thanks a lot Transport for Greater Manchester and your poor journey planner...) we were welcomed with a smile and shown to our table.
Not long after we were handed our menus, we were also presented with a glass of prosecco, proving it doesn't hurt to mention a birthday or special occasion when booking! It was a lovely touch which made the meal even more memorable. Bread and butter were also bought to the table, another unexpected extra, which gave us something to nibble on before our meals started to arrive.
No matter whether you like the food at Hispi or not - and let's face it, you'll enjoy it - the presentation alone is worth noting. Every plate was beautifully presented, even the braised featherblade, which isn't an easy dish to prettify! The gin cured sea trout in particular is worth ordering for the colours and composition alone.
I started with the mozzarella with hazelnuts and celeriac, which was tasty, if a little bit sweet for my taste; the hazelnut butter especially overpowered the gentle mozzarella if not balanced correctly on the fork. For main, I couldn't look past the braised featherblade, which came with mushroom puree and truffle & parmesan chips. The meat itself was simply stunning, completely melting on the plate, and working well with its surrounding ingredients. Dessert of dark chocolate mousse, pistachio sponge and milk granita was really well balanced, but totally outshone by the eccles cake - what a signature dish!
Service was friendly throughout, especially as we only spent money on a bottle of wine (c.£16), and provided us with a special birthday meal.
I think Hispi is really well priced for the consistently excellent quality of food and cooking, so I'm sure to be back in the future. read more
