So you've moved to a new city, you've been working solidly since you did and not in the city center for that matter either. So after your first few weeks in town do you really know anywhere to go? - No.
And then you meet someone, you like her, you ask her what she's doing Friday night, she says nothing (you play it cool at this stage). You say lets go for drinks, maybe some food.
She smiles, you pick a time... and that's when you panic. Where the hell are you going to eat?!
The only place you've been for food is tesco's express and your fairly sure it doesn't have a table waiting policy!
It is this point in our story that any good friend of yours whose lived in manchester half a day will recommend Mal Maison. Its not the cheapest affair, two drinks at the bar coming to £11, but you're guaranteed quality.
I did venture here on a friday night as it happens, without a booking. I was asked to go to the bar, get a drink, and they'd seat me when they could. Far from being the long cold wait i'd feared and the death of the night, we were seated 5 minutes later!
The waiter was attentive, had some good advice for my dinner companion who was unsure what to get. The food came surprisingly quickly for how well it was cooked. And what food! A heroic portion of steak (you must get the steak!) proper home made fries and some kind of bewitching dipping sauce that i would have stolen if only i had pockets suited to the task of smuggling liquids!
Its a difficult 5 star as the price means you probably won't go there often. But the food, the service, the atmosphere and the overall experience were amazing. Our surprise and enjoyment made the night, and for a man without a car its location is perfect. A hotel above and a train station opposite, braced by two taxi ranks.
I really enjoyed myself here and though it won't be a while till i return i can see no reason why it won't be the same or better when i do. read more
