It's easy to find, as St Elphin's 280ft spire - the third highest of any parish church in England - provides a perfect landmark. The pub is part of an attractive clutch of old buildings next to the church, and is Grade II Listed, although unfortunately there's a large Sainsbury's plonked opposite. Inside, it feels more like a country pub than a town pub: lots of tucked away seating areas (ideal for family or social groups) give it a cosy feel, with some old beams on the ceiling providing the right atmosphere. Real ale fans are well catered for with two regulars and three guest ales, although one of the latter was off on our visit. The food menu is extensive and features traditional pub grub, with main meals, baguettes, sandwiches and baked potatoes. There's a good vegetarian selection, too, and staff were friendly and helpful. The 10 minute walk to the pub from Warrington Town Centre passes several other old pubs, also serving real ale, on Buttermarket Street and Church Street, which would make for a perfect real ale pub crawl, ending at the Ring O'Bells. There's a bus stop a few yards away to get you back to the bus station, if needed!

The staff were all very welcoming, and we were all really impressed with the friendly, efficient service. The menu was full of English comfort foods...and they executed everything beautifully. Just look at my photos to get an idea...I tried the goats cheese and caramelised onion strudel, which came balanced on potatoes and perfect ratatouille. If you ever find yourself in this part of the country, it is definitely worth popping in here for some lunch! *Pro tip: It sounded like they get very booked up in the evening, so ring ahead to ensure you get a table!!

Cons: We waited nearly an hour for starers. Some of the staff were arrogant and rude. The main course served on cold plate. Some of the food was moth burning hot whilst parts where stone cold. Parts of the dish were inedible. Tough chewy pork crackling. (Should not of been served) A replacement meal had the same mistake. Not enough was done to rectify the situation and the compensation offered was a joke. The evening was ruined. We ended up going to the Italian round the corner to finish the evening and get something edible to eat. Yes the place was busy but that is no excuse for the rubbish they served. Unfortunately, the weekly acoustic jam sessions seem to have fallen by the wayside due to artistic differences! (Some insisting on bringing powerful amplifiers to what is a residential area pub). There is now very little chance of a brewery onsite, but the former owners have opened as an independent brewery in St Helens with regular "Open Days".

We were made quite welcome by the management and enjoyed a couple of very good real ales vwhile there seemed to be an excellent variety of other choices for others. The pub itself is deceptive, seeming to be rather small from the front but with ample room inside.
