we visited Grill On The Square on a quiet weekday afternoon. There were only 2 other couples other than us in there at the time so we felt happy that we would have swift service.
We were greeted quickly by a staff member and taken to our table. Offered drinks and lunch menus given to us. We were not offered A La Carte menus, we asked a separate waitress for those as soon as she passed by us.
We chose Steak with vegetables. Both with a side order of sauces. Sounds pretty simple?
We waited and chatted and sipped our Soda Waters, then chatted some more. sipped some more. No one else had entered the restaurant and the other 2 couples had already had meals were simply drinking or eating deserts. Still no food. 25 minutes later (in an empty restaurant and steak being cooked rare 25 mins is a pretty long time ) our steaks arrive with the tiniest amount of grease topped watery sauces on the side in little tin pots. One steak looked nice, can not complain about that, the other had a huge amount of fat on one side and a streak of fat in middle also. They looked like different cuts of steak all together but both were the same.
The sauce was bland as were the vegetables, all needed a touch of seasoning too. The decent looking steak had a long strip of sinew through it which meant cutting away a long piece of it, is was so tough even the steak knife refused to cut it! but the rest tasted ok. The dodgy steak you could only eat half of it, the rest was fat. It slightly over cooked (ordered rare ) due to it being a little thin on one side than the other.
I got the nicer steak so shared some of mine over as a nice gesture.
Very stingy on the sauce, very small amount, kind of the amount you'd have left after your meal that you hadn't finished. We only had a small amount due to the reasons I gave above so the small amount wasn't a problem at the time!
The restaurant had no atmosphere at all. No one asked if our meals were ok while we ate.
When a member off staff came to collect our plates he asked all all had been ok,we explained that one steak hadn't been nice and gave him some details why. He looked a tad surprised and said oh.. then just took our plates and walked away without a word about it. !
Having worked in the food industry may years ago I certainly recall that you pay more attention to diners problems and talk to them about it.
We asked for the bill as we did not want to stay for deserts after he blatantly ignored our comments at the table.
Bill Came to £48. For what we got it didn't feel like good value for money or good service unfortunately.
Wouldn't go back.
On the search for a great steak house restaurant in Cheshire still. good choice of cuts and sizes, great chefs, decent portion sizes etc wonder if there is one local?!
2 stars for the fact the place was clean and the tomato and 2 onion rings that came with the steak tasted ok. read more
