For a British pub experience, I am sure The Pumphouse would do just fine. For a dining experience, be prepared to be disappointed. Still, I will give them credit for a relaxing atmosphere and great view which my group did enjoy. Again having a large enough crowd to try nearly everything allowed me to confirm nothing was overwhelming good. The fish and chips were slightly overcooked but the chicken was downright dry. The starters were fair and after the meal the pudding sampler was much better than I expected. Stick to the drinks and I'm sure you'll have a good time.

    Fusmilli Whole Wheat Pasta £8.95

The Pumphouse is located right on the edge of the Albert Dock in all it's coblestone lined path glory. It's called The Pumphouse because...well...it was the pump house of the dock. It's kept the factory feel on the outside and is now an adorable bar & restaurant. Our waitress was a cute young thing, very friendly throughout the entire meal. I had their Fusmilli Whole Wheat Pasta for 8.95. It was one of four meals listed under their 'Lighter Meals' section and packed full of ingredients I loved. like chickpeas, mushrooms and spinach. Apparently it was my ignorance but this was literally just the pasta noodles and veggies thrown in. No sauce or recognizable seasonings of any type that I could detect further than some oil. It just tasted very bland in this state and I was a bit disappointed. My friend had a burger with fries plus a side of onion rings...I envied it all as it looked quite good. A lot of the other patrons in were just catching beers and watching some football so it seems Pumphouse is a great spot for that! There were families, couples and friends alike in this restaurant. Plus they had a big patio space outside which I imagine to be quite relaxing during these summer months on the dock. Positive - clean bathrooms!

A good selection of real ales

A great pub on the waterfront. Good, extremely friendly, service from the staff. Food is the same as all the Greene King chain but plentiful and appetising. Nice seating outside to watch the world go by if the weather fits. A really good selection of real ales. Unfortunately, as we were only in Liverpool for a couple of days, I only managed to sample half of them. The barman offered tasters before I decided but, and he agreed, you can't sample real ales by a mouthful as a pint is needed (my excuse). Plenty of comfy seating inside. Well worth a visit.

Say what you like about the grim, industrial outline of the Pumphouse, I can't think of any other Liverpool pub with such a landmark-laden view. Whereas a window seat in other places will guarantee you a glimpse of bored shoppers, a brick wall or, if you're lucky, a car park, the Pumphouse thrives nestled amongst the cobbled grandeur of the Albert Dock. Peek out any window and you'll be treated to a postcard perspective of the Three Graces, the Mersey or the glittering Liverpool One buildings. It's just a shame the pub's not that good. Insanely busy at the weekend, it tends not to do a good job at serving food. The staff on waiting duty seem like they're only seconds from breaking down and sobbing, begging customers to understand how challenging it is serving gobby idiots. I can hardly blame them but there's only so long you can wait for a plate of nosh before you become disinterested with a place.

Fish & chips (cod fillet). Best I've had.

Very nice, reasonably priced pub on Albert Dock. Comfy and pleasant decor, better than average pub classics, solid range of beers and lagers. This was a pleasant surprise: A restaurant on Albert Dock that's not pricey. The Pumphouse is a historic building, and the pub inside certainly does that history justice. The decor is likeable, especially that there are several "niches" you can disappear into (the attentive waiters will still find you). I had a late lunch there, fish & chips. Quite frankly, the best I've ever had. And reasonably priced, too - as indeed all dishes on the menu were. The batter was crisp, not oily, the cod fillet not too soft. Lovely. Beers aren't cheap, but not dis-proportionally expensive either. After all, it's on Albert Dock, Liverpool's premier tourist attraction. And there's a good range of beers and lagers on offer, including several real ales. If you want to take a break from visiting the Albert Dock museums and galleries (Tate, Slavery Museum, Maritime Museum) - I'd recommend you visit this place.

As a seasoned UK Fish N' Chips expert I was expecting big things from the Pumphouse. The restaurant provided great patio views of Albert Dock and today was a rarity with warm weather, sunshine and clear skies. Besides the ambiance the Fish N'Chips was over cooked and more batter then white cod fish. The most disappointing part was table bread that looked and tasted like slices of bread aged a few days off the local grocery shelf. The location, good alcohol selection/pricing, service and staff curved The Pumphouse to a 3 instead of 2.

If it wasn't for the terrific views around the dock at the foot of the Liver Building, there would be little reason to suggest coming to The Pumphouse pub. Maybe the owners just new there was no need to do anything with the place because its location does so much for it. It basically feels like a very lucky Wetherspoons! As the Albert Dock attracts so many people for various reasons, it is a pretty good pub to get a beer and some scran at anytime of the year as it has plenty of outdoor seating to take advantage of the views in the summer and can be a much needed source of respite from the elements during the winter that wont cost as much as the nearby restaurants.

The Pump house is a classy pub in the dockside area which is very suited to its classy surroundings. The atmosphere here is great and very warm meaning you can really sit back and enjoy your drinks whilst feeling very relaxed indeed. The staff here are extremely attentive and efficient and make your experience as full as it possibly could be which really is excellent. This pub has a great outside seating area and on a nice day there can hardly be many better places to enjoy a drink whilst perusing the surrounding dockside area. The drinks prices are a tad high but again you pay for what you get and on the whole the prices are definitely worth the experience as a whole. If you are in Liverpool and you fancy a classy drink and a warm atmosphere in a traditional but high brow pub then this is your place.

Pleasant place to go for a drink (draught Guinness anyone?) or a wholesome meal. Choose between a mixture of seating from high bar stools/chairs to sofas and armchairs, or plain wooden tables and chairs. There are polished floorboards and a combination of old and new decor; old brick arches alongside painted walls and ceilings, inset spotlights, the odd chandelier, modern art prints and curious glass windows looking into other seating areas on higher or lower levels. There's a good menu with a lot of choice for vegetarians. Alongside the Albert Dock and not far to walk into town so an excellent location.

There's memorabilia of the band dotted around including a photo strategically placed above the spot they used to sit. Whilst it remains s a cheap and cheerful pub run by friendly staff, the only people likely to frequent The Grapes these days are nostalgic locals and tourists. Both the decor and layout have changed since the Merseybeat days and the whole place could do with a bit of TLC and elbow grease. If you're drinking spirits, there's vodka, whisky and so on but the beer section is disappointing compared to other pubs in the city. Ironically, the worst thing about The Grapes these days is the entertainment. It might have housed the hippest Liverpool band back in the day but it now runs deafening karoake sessions early evenings followed by average singer-songwriters and bands.

Since the only one on Mathew Street at the time was the Grapes, mere doors away, it would be here that benefited most richly. The claim to Beatles fame is therefore more genuine here than some other places, they visited between gigs, but that doesn't entirely vindicate it from tackiness. I last visited this pub on a Saturday afternoon, when there was little danger of karaoke erupting from nowhere and the seats were likely to be empty. The awkwardly-shaped bar can mean it takes a while to get served but soon I was sitting with a pint of stout, blessing the gods for letting me have a table to myself. This lasted precisely eighteen seconds before five rowdy Dutchmen came and surrounded me. Conversation with them went swimmingly until I accidentally called them German. I also brought up their recent World Cup Final defeat. I shouldn't be allowed near Europeans.
