Love me an English pub, and this is certainly a typical one. It's near Liverpool city centre, so walkable to just about everything including the docks. Given it's solid location, it was surprised that it was super busy both times we popped in. It's cozy inside with plenty of seating. As with many places in the UK, it's an order-at-the-bar type of thing. Meaning, no one is coming to a table to serve you. We grabbed a few pints and decided to head out back. There you'll find this huge courtyard like space with a giant tent above it. So it's technically outside and open-aired, but completely covered. Sprawling tables and benches are about that everyone shares. A great communal atmosphere! On our second visit here during our time in Liverpool, we grabbed a bite to eat. They have a good size food menu including shareables/bar snacks, classics, burgers, and sandwiches. Sadly they were out of the salt & pepper chicken we hoped to order, so instead we went with fish and chips. A GREAT second pick because it was truly your classic English dish - the fish was battered but not overly like they tend to do in the US. Love the chunky chips (fries) too. Walking distance from The Cavern Club on 10 Matthew St in Merseyside is Thomas Rigby's, a Grade-II listed building and public house. I grabbed a seat and knew I wanted to try their Scouse -a lamb (or beef) stew popular in Liverpool. I thinks that this place is often overlooked as being one of the really great pubs in Liverpool as from this view on the hectic, exhaust fume heavy Dale Street, Rigby's kind of lokks like a run down old pub. In a way it is but round the back Rigby's forms part of a courtyard with 3 other pubs which provides a haven for the city centre drinker and several decent pubs next to each other that provide the start to a good night out. The plentiful heated lamps also make the courtyard a good venue in the winter too but for now it provides a nice shady envrionment to enjoy a few scoops. It really is a wonder how there hasn't been an epidemic of gout across Liverpool due to the sheer volume of pubs that now have such a good selection of real ales and good traditional food to go with it. read more

We had a large family gathering of over 20 people . The food was great and the fish was especially huge . Special mention though to the staff for their customer service. Like a lot of places at the moment they were short staffed in the kitchen so food was taking longer than normal so without any prompting they gave us a number of free drinks to say sorry for the wait . Thomas Rigby's, formally Rigby's, is less than a five minute walk from Moorfields Station. Handy when it was raining as heavily as it was when we got off the train. The pub, which is inviting from the outside, has a pleasant and traditional look inside. The staff were extremely friendly; the bartender happily and informatively talked us through all the cask ales on offer and they all engaged in conversation with us when we asked them stupid drunken questions. There is a rumour that Lord Nelson himself drank in Thomas Rigby's many years ago. It's not true, we asked. It's was my fist experience of Thomas Rigby's pub but it's definitely somewhere I want to frequent. Great pub. Great beer. Great service. read more

Pub across from our hotel so stopped in for a bite. Staff was very helpful. Bit different than the states as you order at the bar but the bartender recommended the Scouse which was delicious. Lamb stew but really flavorful and went well with a couple pints. My wife had the fish and chips and the fish had quite a bit of breading but was pretty good. Met several LFC fans and jokes with a couple of Everton fan employees. Would recommend you drop in. read more

What's better than a great pub? A great pub that's ancient, that's what. And Rigby's really does cut the mustard right here, a Grade II listed beauty having been knocking around since 1726 near Moorfields station, and once a place where Lord Nelson knocked back a sherry or two apparently. In fact the man's patronage meant they named a room after him. Ain't that sweet? Visually, it might not be what you're expecting at all. In fact I know it won't be. Most of what you'll see in front of you is from the 1920s so the whole ancient, ramshackle authentic kind of vibe isn't what you'll experience. Moreover it represents a multitude of redevelopments which took place over the years. Still, it's pretty impressive - it's a grand old structure reflecting Liverpool's vastly accumulated wealth by the 1700s with five whole storeys (greedy so-and-so!), and once lived life as a traditional coaching inn, symbolised by a little bit of adjacent covered roadway. There are two very cosy snug areas accompanying a sometimes too vast-feeling central bar area, but inside is as much of a spectacle as out, particularly with the excellent range of real ales in there... in fact the options are more unusual than in most pubs meaning a palate suffering l'ennui is bound to find something to tickle the tastebuds. There's plenty of room to settle in, and there's a menu full of traditional pub food if you find yourself lightheaded from all the Kriek. Or at least, I do. Don't laugh at me. It's popular too, busy in the evenings and at weekends but retains its tranquil ambience by attracting a more mature clientele. I liked the look of it from the street, and entering to the pub door was delighted to see that it wasn't all glitz inside, far from it. Surprised there was no local beer on offer, but what was, was fine. Noticed an outdoor area but stayed inside and took in the ambiance along with the friendly vibe. Nice place, nice crowd. A grade II-listed former coaching house, Thomas Rigby's is a big, half-timbered hall of a pub boasting a range of ales harvested from across the globe and a location that places it within spitting distance of much of Liverpool's glory days. It's rumoured that Nelson himself met with Lady Hamilton in the back room here during the time when it was an 18th-century coffee house. As you walk in you find the actual building is halved into the splintered, friendly public house on your left and the vaguely Tudorish cross beamed splendour of the parlour on your right, where food is served from Liverpool's most helpful menu. What meal suits what kind of ale is all laid out in a way that allows me to bypass my natural tendency to botch the simplest thing, and that's always a bonus. read more

Great real ale! Lots of choice. Both pints in good condition. But wouldn't offer small tasters! And no CAMRA discount. Cool music! Food on the menu looked good but they stop serving at 18:45! So go if you want good real ale without tasters and with early evening food! read more

Thomas Rigby's is a great pub selling great beer and great food.The pub itself is a very run down city centre pub that has a dirty feel to it and is in need of a lick of paint,fresh varnish on the tables and floor .There is always a strong smell of chip fat from the pub when you stand outside the front door.The staff are great,always friendly and aways know there ales,the manager there seems to be a bit of a bully who treats some of the staff as slaves then employees.The outside beer garden is great in the summer. read more
