I took a trip here on its second day of being open to the smelly public and was sorry to find it had a few teething problems. The blank plastered walls and scatterings of furniture gave it a oddly morose look. No music was playing so the air was echoing with chatter and the whole thing was strangely depressing, like a party that's been going on far too long and everybody just wants to leave. Bear in mind this was its second day. There were some positives, mind. When they finally get round to ordering enough of everything on their menus, the selection here will be very impressive, with fine old ales from across the globe. I hope this place makes it eventually. They deserve to live up to their staff's eagerness and not my bristling cynicism.

Let's be clear from the start: this place doesn't have any exotic beers. I couldn't find a single…read moreone. Pretty much every beer they carry is easily available everywhere, and most can be bought at a local tesco extra. As a Canadian, I was quite offended to once again find Moosehead as the only Canadian beer available. Seriously, haven't these guys ever heard of La Maudite, la Fin du Monde or Creemore springs. ( no, they haven't. ) The beer selection is also quite lager centric, and the only ales they carry are the pretty standard ones. At least they do have some Belgian Trappist beers, which does save the quality of their menu a little. But what they lack in their beer list, they more than make up for in their ambience and the general environment. Me and my girlfriend visited this place on a Sunday evening, and we were genuinely surprised to find a live singer ( who my girl quite fancied - insert angry emoticon here) and the atmosphere buzzing. I had a standard German Weiss and my lady consumed some Cusqueña. ( which I think I a great lager, and recommend it to lager lovers. ) Upstairs, they have rows of tables and benches, which I have been told is very German, but I really felt like I was home. The service was extremely friendly and even the bouncers ( I think they were bouncers) smiled. Whenever I'm in Liverpool, I shall be visiting this place, and if you are not an annoying beer snob like me, you will definitely enjoy the visit.

The downstairs interior is mainly booths with chipped formica tables and mini jukeboxes that don't work any more. There used to be a large jukebox near the stairs leading up to the function room, but I think it's been scrapped. I don't remember seeing it last time I was there, at least. The upstairs function room isn't quite so shabby, and I remember a few years ago when they held a karaoke competition up there and it was a huge success. Until I didn't win, of course. The bar offers double and triple spirits for a ridiculously low price, and also has a decent selection of bottles and draught beer. The food is typical student stuff, with chip butties and full Englishes all on the board next to the bar. A basic full English starts at £1.95, just for an idea of how cheap it actually is. The pub mainly has jukebox music but occasionally you'll find a live act on. The function room was also used to give pole dancing classes a while back, but I doubt that goes on anymore. (More's the pity). I have to say that despite its shabbiness and obvious appeal to squanderers and students, The Pilgrim holds a place close to my heart and if I lived nearer to the city centre I would aim to make it my local.

Forget a doubles bar, The Pilgrim is a triples bar and with a small selection of ales too, you can see why this place has been a student favourite for decades. As you descend the old stone steps into the main drinking area, you get a sense of tradition amongst the dark wood interior and murals along the walls. With a covered patio area at the front to boot, The Pilgrim provides a handy arena for us smokers too.

But the attraction here is that it sells beer from all around the world. German, Belgian, Japanese, American... everything you can think of! They sell Weihenstephaner Weissbier which is one of the tastiest drinks on the face of the Earth. I can't recommend German Weissbiers enough. The prices aren't that cheap but they are perfectly reasonable, considering the drinks of offer. They are more than worth the money, that's for sure! This place is head and shoulders above any normal 'pub'. Bier also offers pies, nachos and hotdogs if you're feeling a little peckish. There are lots of TVs to show sport on. Sometimes I'll steer clear of the place when it's like this, I'll admit. This is because I'm not really into sport and, as you can probably imagine, it gets extremely packed at these times. If you're into your football though, then this place would definitely have yet more to offer you. Even though that sounds like a negative point from me, the good part of Bier more than make up for it. It's such a great place to relax and try fantastic beers from all around the world. This is an essential place to go.

There's memorabilia of the band dotted around including a photo strategically placed above the spot they used to sit. Whilst it remains s a cheap and cheerful pub run by friendly staff, the only people likely to frequent The Grapes these days are nostalgic locals and tourists. Both the decor and layout have changed since the Merseybeat days and the whole place could do with a bit of TLC and elbow grease. If you're drinking spirits, there's vodka, whisky and so on but the beer section is disappointing compared to other pubs in the city. Ironically, the worst thing about The Grapes these days is the entertainment. It might have housed the hippest Liverpool band back in the day but it now runs deafening karoake sessions early evenings followed by average singer-songwriters and bands.

Since the only one on Mathew Street at the time was the Grapes, mere doors away, it would be here that benefited most richly. The claim to Beatles fame is therefore more genuine here than some other places, they visited between gigs, but that doesn't entirely vindicate it from tackiness. I last visited this pub on a Saturday afternoon, when there was little danger of karaoke erupting from nowhere and the seats were likely to be empty. The awkwardly-shaped bar can mean it takes a while to get served but soon I was sitting with a pint of stout, blessing the gods for letting me have a table to myself. This lasted precisely eighteen seconds before five rowdy Dutchmen came and surrounded me. Conversation with them went swimmingly until I accidentally called them German. I also brought up their recent World Cup Final defeat. I shouldn't be allowed near Europeans.
