The race on a Friday and a Saturday night to watch the petals fall off the mezzanine at Alma de Cuba has to be seen to be believed. If you happen to be on the train that arrives into central station at 10:30 you'll be greeted by the sight of glammed up grown women attempting to run in high heels so as not to miss paper petals being thrown from the balcony at the Cuban themed bar. It is impressive in its own way and the carnival dancers that accompany the drop are an interesting interruption. The place itself is very impressive - a converted church festooned with dripping candles. For me though none of this really makes up for what one of the other Yelpers here identified as the 'douchebag factor.' The place is swimming in pretentious idiots swilling overpriced champagne hoping against hope that a girl running in for the petal drop might trip over and they get a look at their knickers. I have never eaten here but probably never will, so much has that little story I came up with there incensed me.

Alma de Cuba is a bar and restaurant which certainly stays long in the memory as it offers something unique to the customer which is always a good thing. The place itself is small from the outside but has enough room to offer a comfortable dining experience within and the key thing is that they manage to make you feel very relaxed. They do things differently here even offering a menu known as the gospel which is available as an alternative form of worship on a Sunday lunch time and although I'm not sure the cathedral would approve it certainly is a novel idea. The food here is great with their steak and brazen beef being particular highlights for me accompanied by a healthy portion of wine which went down very well indeed. The staff are good and although the service can be a tad slow it is worth the wait in the end and is the perfect place for something more than your average lunch.

From the outside this place looks like a small little white church, definite tardis as when you go in the place really opens up, it's massive! And really quirkily done, a definite must see. The food is fantastic! It is pricy but you do get the service, plus free hors d'oeuvres, when I went it was a chunky chip and fish finger type thing with tartar sauce really quirky, fresh and tasty. I had steak and it was amazing, the deserts looked really good as well, but I couldn't dare eat another morsel I was that full. I've also tried the bar food which is more tapas like, but again really really good. Definitely worth a try if you ever in the city. (New visit!) Wow! Seriously good. Ok so maybe it was the Chateaubriand - I've never had it before and oh it was good, really really good, worth every penny in my book. This place it going up their with my favourites. Service was impeccable, food delicious, atmosphere amazing, at 11pm when all the petals are thrown they now have crazy Cuban type dancing, it feels like a real fiesta party, but at the same time if you're upstairs eating you're detached enough to not be too swept up in all the sweat and noise - it's up to you where you'd choose to be. YOU HAVE TO TRY THIS PLACE. No free hors d'oeuvres though this time and the duck wraps weren't the best but still doing a very very good job. I'll be back.

Alba de cuba is a very high quality food and drink establishment in liverpool city centre. It's in a beautifully converted church building and its almost entirely candle lit, very romantic indeed! We started our evening there with some cocktails from its great ranging drinks menu. A cosmoplolitan for herself and a long island iced tea for myself(which considering it wasn't even on the list, was a very good balanced mix). Then onto the meal. Each course came in perfect time allowing you to eat at a comfortable pace without rushing. For starters she had the duck spring rolls and i had the butternut squash rissotto. Both were absolutly gorgeous! Followed by the honey glaze ribs ,which were alot spicier than i had anticipated, but still very tasty! she had the piri piri chicken salad, which was also fantastic! And for desert we shared the sticky toffee pudding, which was unreal! I can honestly say that alma de cuba was one of the most amazing eating experiences i've ever had! Highly recommend and can't wait for my next visit!!

One of the best places I was able to eat at on my trip through the UK. Recommended to us by our hotel concierge, Alma de Cuba offered a trendy and sophisticated atmosphere. Although we didn't have reservations, they were able to put us at a beautiful table overlooking the bar below and with a great view of the grandiose chapel. They had a great variety of dishes and a GREAT wine list! We ordered a bottle of the Celeste Crianza (2009) and were satisfied to the last drop. If you are visiting Liverpool, this is a quintessential hotspot you have to see for yourself.

Night Clubs and Restaurants are an ideal place to enjoy on a night, but Alma De Cuba (used to be a church) was the beat Ihave been to. A classy, and energetic place that would be an ideal for a romantic and fun night with a partner. The place is lit with candles and dim lights that would make you welcoming. In terms of services, the waiters provide really good services, friendly and are willing to provide suggestions when you want suggestions on food. Also the foods are presented really well on the plate that it would tempt you to eat it. Although the foods are expensive, the quality of the food seems worth it. Overall it is a place worth going to

A friend had mentioned that there was an acoustic Live Lounge type session there every Sunday evening so, loving live music as I do, I thought I'd check it out. The bar was pretty busy but my two friends and I were able to bag a section of one of the very comfy booths. I was just about to head to the bar when a very friendly and polite waitress came over to take our drinks order - table service! Nice touch! The cocktail menu is extensive containing traditional ones like your classic Cosmo or Singapore Sling and more unusual offerings, many of them Thai inspired like the Absolut Mandarin based 'Bangkok Nights' or the 'Chaophraya Jungle'. The atmosphere was great and the live music didn't disappoint. There were three live acts, all with differing styles but equally excellent. The music went on from 5pm to gone 7.30 and made for a really chilled out and classy atmosphere. I believe Palm Sugar can get pretty packed on a Friday and Saturday night with DJs playing fairly standard house/party music (which is not really my cup of tea!) but I would certainly head back on a Sunday evening when I think you can better enjoy the excellent service and very pleasant ambience of this place. And brilliant live performances from very talented musicians thrown into the bargain - winner!

But if you tend to avoid VIP sections, bodycon dresses and hair extensions in favour of something a little more tatty and real then you might want to heed my warning. I was invited to an event at Palm Sugar, and... well, I had the same problem as I did with 50 Dover Street, Movida and even the dreaded Opus. It's just so... pretentious. I can deal with arty pretentiousness. That's cool. It's sexy. But when every girl in the room aspires to be Jordan and every boy models himself on a head-clubbing caveman, if they love 'slebs and More magazine and Fake Bake, I don't really feel like I'm with my people. Plus, the place is made after a substance that the Western desire for which is destroying the habitat of orang-utans. What more do you need to know? Well, obviously a little because otherwise I wouldn't be putting together this review. The decor is pretty, it can't be denied - far nicer than the ominous outside, which incorporates both judgemental bouncers and one of those women with a clipboard. *Shudder* I've been told it's really pleasant during the day, or on a weeknight, so if you want to drink in the ambient surroundings and quaff some admittedly lovely cocktails in an environment devoid of the wannabe WAGs and hardmen then you should absolutely go for it. Plus in the daytime if it's sunny it's a lovely spot to sit outside and watch the world go by. In conclusion, by all means try it during the quieter times, but unless you can cope with a lot of squealing and loud gruff voices, you might want to avoid the peak hours.

And let me linger a moment on the bar - it holds pretty much every spirit you can think of. Example: I asked for a shot of Frangelico last time I was there (tastes like Nutella in a shot) and they had it. You also don't need to spend all day dithering over the wonderful cocktail menu - simply describe to the barman the kind of drink you want and he'll whip it up in an instant. I foresee one problem though: this place is gonna be so popular there just won't be enough space to let everyone in! I wouldn't be surprised if there are queues at the weekend, and if not, there flipping well should be!! The main bar has already spilled over into a back bar, which is up the stairs on the way to the toilets. The back bar can probably only fit one bartender behind it though, so he'd better be a many-armed Hindu god to be able to deal with the demand for cocktails. I hope this place doesn't expand though, as it is likely to lose some of its charm in the process. Don't be fooled by the name as there's not a drop of tea in sight. We were seated at a table with mismatched crockery and furniture that gave off that comfy, shabby-chic feeling that makes you want to curl up with a good book. We were given little pots of salted and sweet popcorn to share as our drink orders were taken. there was one teapot between two with the choices of either a vodka, gin or rum cocktail. Viktoria and I opted for the gin cocktail that was well-balanced and tasted of berry. We were then given gigantic bowls of paprika fries to share that were so full of flavour that we had to warn our friend to not put salt on hers, it would have been way too overwhelming! Then the main event arrived, the humungous, three tiered feast. Each person got a mini burger, a mini hotdog, a mini sandwich and a couple of pretzels and onion rings each. Even though the portions of each item were small, they were incredibly satisfying and filling yet it may partially be down to stuffing our faces with the popcorn and fries beforehand. The top tier of the photo I posted shows the vegetarian option and shows approximately one portion size. Finally, we finished off with a slightly smaller cake stand filled the the brim with delicious puddings. We each got two slices of cake, one chocolate and one lemon, a lolly and a generous helping of other sweets such as Harribos, Maoams and Love Hearts. The cakes were incredible, especially the chocolate one that was slightly crunchy like a brownie. I did ponder at the start of the meal whether there would be enough food to go around but there really was, we ended up leaving some of the sweets and fries! The staff were friendly and service was efficient and the food was fine (nothing special, but totally acceptable) but the place is FILTHY. Calling yourself a dive bar is all well and good but you do still need to adhere to basic hygiene laws. The table we were sat at was so sticky, I had to put a napkin down to stop my arms from adhering to the surface. The cutlery on the table wasn't the cleanest but it's the toilets that were absolutely heinous - not even just untidy but actually dirty. They didn't look like they'd been cleaned from a heavy night of usage the night before - they smelt terrible, there was debris on the floor, no mirror, no toilet paper and were generally deeply unpleasant. As other reviewers have mentioned, there is a pervading pong of chip fat throughout which lingers on your clothing - major turn-off. I'm really glad I went in there after I ate or I'd have left immediately. I really wanted to like this place (love the idea of their punk afternoon teas and their fake wedding discos) but they need to familarise themselves with some Domestos pronto. For the cleanliness alone, I would not recommend anyone to visit there (unless you're from the local council, do pop in and see for yourself!). If they sort that out, I'd be back in a heartbeat.
