    Steeeeeeak!!!
    Toby S.

Gaucho is the last word in Steak. I have put a lot of steak in my face over the years, I potentially am part Cow the amount I've consumed... which would make this cannabilism, oh god I'm a Zombie, wait wait sorry I'm getting off track. Argentinian steak is a flavour sensation that must be experienced, They bring you a butchers board with all the cuts they do on it for you to pick, but not to pick blindly oh no they will ask how you like your steak cooked and based on this which cut is best for you. Then they'll recommend what wine would best go with your steak, obviously you can pick whatever wine you want if you have a favourite but I'm a amateur flavourist (yeah I just made that title up) and thoroughly enjoy putting flavours together maximise each of them (if you ever come with me for a beer there's a flavour art to the order you drink them for example) If all this helpful knowledge being put into your ears wasn't enough, the next clue the steak was something special was... No steak knives. Don't get me wrong I love my pub grub and getting a steak in a pub is a great thing, but if they don't give you a valaryan steel knife freshly sharpened on unicorn horns you ain't cutting no pub meat. Gaucho steaks not so, they virtually part before you blunt as a butter knife, knife slicing through as though it were water. Steak flavours, amazing, sides very nice, infact they were probably great but the steak was so good they were very much resigned to being sides. I have the Cabbage, Spinach, and Chorizo with Roast Sweet Potatoe. Desert, I don't often do desert but I couldn't resist. One of my work colleagues we split the deserts because we couldn't decide, the Sticky toffee pudding was, alright just alright I 'think' it's almost something that is done better justice by not being too fancy. The other desert though in the words of George 'Oh My!' Don Pedro is icecream whipped with Rum or Whiskey, we opted for rum, oh my my my my my, what a tasty treat to end on. Price wise, yes Gaucho is not cheap, but the moment that steak goes in your mouth you realise why, it's not something you could do every week, or every month, or even every few months, but I would say that's a great thing in keeping Gaucho that special place you go to for celebration.

After hearing so many good things about Gaucho I couldn't wait to give it a go! I headed down for the lunch time seating with a couple of friends who hadn't eaten here before. We were seated in a nice booth and talked through the use of their salad bar and explained how the different cuts of meat were brought round the tables on using a green (more meat) and red (no more meat) sticker. We headed up to the salad bar first and I use the words "salad bar" lightly as this is not your standard selection. The choice was amazing, from salad to stuffed vine leaves, to cured meats and hot pasta and rice including a black potato salad! If this wasn't enough to fill you up so was the meat and fries which were brought directly to your table. You don't get as big a selection as you do in the evening and the prices reflect this, however we still got to try the house steak, sausages, gammon, pork and chicken - the list was endless! After a couple of helpings at the salad bar we all left stuffed! With the nice decor and the lovely waiting staff I definitely will be back in the future!

Went here for Valentine's Day was a really good atmosphere and the staff were so friendly, our waiter showed us a tray of meats and helped us decide what to eat and how to have it cooked. The food was delicious and steak was cooked to perfection, is expensive but definitely worth every penny! Also gorgeous design inside and was great for a romantic night out

Definitely one for the special occasion - this place made my anniversary perfect. The entire experience was spot on from start to finish. When entering you are greeted at the reception and shown to the bar for a drink before your meal. The decor is based around cow print, very classy with lots of black and silver. The service was impeccable - after we were shown to our table we were offered more drinks and given time to look at the menus. Shortly after one of the waiters offered to explain more about the different cuts of steak they were offering, and his knowledge was second to none. When the steak arrived it was cooked perfectly - the best steak I have ever tasted. The price of the steaks is really not to dissimilar to any other steak house in Manchester - it's the starters and desserts which add up. But for a special occasion I would say that this is the perfect location, and the attention to detail more than makes up for it.

Gaucho is definitely a special occasion restaurant for most of us plebians who can't afford anything but the house wine. By the way, Gaucho don't really even have a house wine - their cheapest option is their own brand wine from the Gaucho vineyard in Argentina. And it is details like this that make Gaucho stand out. The waiters and sommeliers know their stuff, the different cuts of beef (what people visit for) are demonstrated on a board at your table and advice is on hand if you need a bit of help. The decor has recently been updated - its dark, moody with cow print seat covers (classy or tacky? You decide). Black and white colour scheme, visible kitchen and a private dining room on a mezzanine at the back of the restaurant. It is a bit posey and there is no way that you'll be able to afford to get drunk here unless you're splashing out. But it's not that kind of place anyway. Grown up. Business lunches maybe... Where you might take your parents, other half or best friend to give them some understated good news or something like that. So despite its individuality, Gaucho came off as the Victoria Beckham of Manchester restaurants. Dark, posh and trying a smidgen too hard.

Fantastic food, wine, atmosphere and staff. Top notch place! Tried the 300g lomo fillet with peppercorn and bernaise sauce and applecrumbles with vanilla custard for dessert. Will absolutely come back when I'm in town. The charming local waitress made all of us four lads fall in love

So wonderful! Friendly service, great food, interesting ambience. We tried risotto, two types of steaks, chips, mushrooms (don't skip the shrooms!), and Mac and cheese (wasn't great-watery). Desserts were also wonderful - caramel cheesecake, coconut leche, and lemon tart. Cheesecake was not to be missed!

Good Argentinian steakhouse in the heart of Manchester's City Centre. I don't know what it is about this area's restaurants, but it seems that they all need to have a nightclub vibe or look. Fortunately, Gaucho Grill's garish decor does not reflect upon its food quality. The restaurant is not in the style of Brazilian rodizio-service churrascarias where waiters circulate the dining room with skewers of grilled meats to be sliced tableside, but is a traditional wait-service steak restaurant specializing in Argentinian cuts and styles. (That being said, many of the steaks available will be familiar to Brazilian churrascaria aficionados.) My colleagues and I started off sharing an appetizer of the seafood sampler which was comprised of delicately sliced fresh scallops drizzled lightly with a soy/sesame oil vinaigrette (simple and deliciously sweet), tuna ceviche (meaty melt-in-your mouth chunks), and crayfish causita, a kind of crawfish salad (and probably the least impressive of the three). My colleagues had the ribeye (ancho) and sirloin (chorizo) steaks; I went with my favorite cut, the picana (top rump steak) with that delicious thin strip of crisp fatty rind. The picana arrived in 5 slices, all medium rare and nicely seasoned. The wine list is mainly Argentinian and went well with the meats. Wait service was very good.

I was invited here for the opening of the new cocktail bar. As soon as we walked through the door we were handed a glass champagne - an excellent start! The decor is very modern but is quite dimly lit - nice for a romantic drink. The drinks were constantly been topped up. I don't think my glass ever reached emptiness. We were served canapes throughout the evening. They were all excellent but my favourite was the little burgers. Although the food and drink were all great I feel the place was missing something, a little bit of an introduction or speech from the management maybe would've gone down well...I will, however, give it another try in a few weeks when they hopefully have got settled in.

Great place for fine dining! The service was fast and staff were very friendly! Ambiance and the mood is mellow and very calm. They have a set meal with only 2 choices of steaks, however the starters were amazing!

I have never been in hear but always wanted to as it looked lovely. Me and my partner got two free tickets to the launch of the new bar. When walked in all I can say is wow it's amazing. It's really luxurious quite dark with lots of cow print, chrome and glass. The restaurant is quite bright but still really cosy still carrying the team if the bar through with the cow print and glass. The staff was fantastic they were so friendly and made you feel really welcome. The drinks and food was flowing all night, you could have whatever you wanted from the bar the champagne was really lovely they were serving my favourite drink though was the gin and gingerbeer they serve fentimens gingerbeer which is one of my favourits. The food was great too i loved the canapés and the mini burgers. Overall it was a fantastic evening and I will definitely be returning to the bar as I loved the atmosphere and the feel of the place, I also want to try the resturants

The chef definitely needs to use some Argentinian salt, that would make a world of difference. The lasagna and guacho burger were pretty good, but the sides were just okay. They didn't quite reach the level of a great steakhouse. Overall, it had the potential to be a really great restaurant, but it just didn't quite make the cut. Servers were very friendly.

I really cannot figure this name out. Is it a play on words? It's a play on words that doesn't…read morereally make sense. I know there's lots of meat, thus Argentinian Meat, perhaps 'meet' is a noun in this case? As in short for meeting place? I'm sure I'll ponder that one in the wee small hours whilst attempting to drift into slumber, but meanwhile I'll tell you about the restaurant itself. Business districts are tricky when it comes to food. Take Spinningfields in my home city of Manchester for example. During the evening, the likes of Nando's and Carluccio's are desolate, with the occasional ball of tumbleweed whistling through with the breeze. But by day these places are crammed with suits. It's those after-work hours that are tricky. Argentinian Meet at the bottom of Brunswick Street however has managed to pack them in, conquering the difficult post-5pm slot and having done so since its opening in 2006. But what of the food? The restaurant claims that unlike its owners, all the beef is Argentinian. The staff happen to be Hispanic and South American but we're not eating them, it's just an interesting fact. How about the vino? Only three Argentinians on the list there I'm afraid, and they come with a high price tag. The rest are just your average Pinot Collapsos you'd find in your local pub, nay, Thresher's even. All the dishes here come with a fresh and colourful little side salad which is crispy and refreshing enough to take the edge off the spicy mains and clean the palate, and chimichurri, a traditional Argentinian accompaniment dip. It's nice. If you're veggie you'll be REALLY disappointed. You've been assigned to the rudimentary pesto spaghetti or the Portobello mushroom lasagne with spinach. Hardly Argentinian, really. Still, if you're a pescetarian/vegequarian like me you're in for a little more of a treat with whole lobster, grilled tuna, salmon and cod. The tuna cooked with chilli, garlic and coriander butter is delightfully cooked and melts in the mouth. You might notice a little hit and miss vibe with the old steaks though, the whole reason you'd come to an Argentinian place. They have a habit of tenderising the meat, such as ribeye, and in bashing the bejaysis out of it they also bang away the flavour and the thickness, thus resulting in something stretched and disturbing. Kind of like that guy attached to the fish hooks in Hellraiser. Oh god, I've just put you off tenderised steak forever. Nay mind. The steak here might not be as good as Gaucho Grill, but heck, they do follow orders and cook it to your exact tastes. The ribeye, however Frank from Hellraiser it might be, will be as medium rare, rare or well done as you asked. Simples. Service is good and while you might be privy to a lot of phone calls about Monday meetings and targets and 'but he's not pulling his weight in terms of the Johnson account', the atmosphere's pretty bustling too. And there's even chips. Well whaddya know!

It may surprise you but I used to be a vegan. Stop laughing…read more I spent my Uni years harbouring the false belief that I could put right all my hardcore partying at a physiological level by eating nothing but vegetables, pulses and grains. This went well for the first few months and I may well have been the healthiest (and sadly also windiest) party poppet that Leeds has ever seen. Then came the day I made a devastating discovery. Monster Munch are vegan. And that was that. All healthy home-cooked vegan feasts were immediately eschewed for a diet of nought but variously flavoured Monster Munch dipped in hummus. Eating nothing but crisps and mashed chick peas for 3 years is not something I'd recommend. Then one day I cracked. Sliding down Briggate on a wave of vitamin starved misfiring synapses I found myself stood outside Burger King foaming at the mouth and stamping my feet like a nervous horse bound for Tesco. No less than 4 Rodeo Burgers later I was forced, due to digestive 'unpleasantness', to spend the rest of the week in bed with a bucket. So you'd think I'd learn wouldn't you? But no. I dumped my hippy treads and embarked on a new career as eater of all things living and dead, there is ne'er a creature walking this earth that I will not willingly pounce upon for an appreciative nibble and the mighty steakhouse is my new Jerusalem. So it was no real surprise that for Valentine's Day my boyfriend took me the most direct route twixt living cow and my eager gullet. Gaucho is impossibly slick. I rather suspect the staff have been augmented with some sort of biological hovercraft system, they seem to float toward you beaming smiles of perfect professionalism out of their inhumanly white and even dentition. This is by no means a cheap night but bar the rather overpriced wines you get what you pay for- delicious and serious cocktails delivering a multitude of clearly distinguishable flavours, succulent and perfectly cooked steaks with tasty and interesting side dishes, a cheese board that would cause a cardiac in even your most experienced mouse affineur and the opportunity to sit back and giggle at the very serious clientele with their 6" inch heels, frozen faces and identikit figures as they struggle to understand their footballer boyfriend's monosyllabic conversation whilst nibbling a single chip. Arf! Silly tarts! I would agree that the music loses Gaucho a star, I know it's a la mode in Brentwood to drown out the mindless verbal diarrhoea of your braindead dining companion with thumping techno in even the most sedate restaurant environment but this is Yorkshire and occasionally people have something interesting to say. Well some of us do. Not too sure about tables 3, 5, 6, 9, 10, 12 ,14 and 20.....THUMP THUMP THUMP (pause) "...but then I said 'yeah' and she said 'yeah but no', know what I mean?"...THUMP THUMP THUMP THUMP The food at Gaucho was utterly delicious, the service impeccable and the surroundings stylish considering how many cows were flayed to achieve it. Put simply, if you want to impress then this is a great place to take a date....if you know your date well and want to stuff her full of meat, herby chips and booze until she doesn't know what's what then take her to Fazenda.

Let's first caveat this then - I love steak. And I love red wine. And I love both at the same time…read moreeven more than on their own. Gaucho then... If I were a religious man and believed in the pearly gates and flocks of angels, then Gaucho would be the place that sat just beyond the fence and was populated by cherub faced waiting staff. Gaucho isn't a restaurant, it's an experience... should you manage to find the stairs that lead down to the basement on Park Row, you'll be confronted by surroundings that no place in Leeds really comes close to. And it's not going to be everyones cup of tea of course. The hidden little corners and booths, the cow clad seating, the near darkness that can make it hard to navigate, the chandeliers that seem to give off lumens at a fraction of what you would expect for their size... Garish? Over the top? Slightly eccentric? Maybe. As I say, it's not RBG, it's not Blackhouse, it's not Piccolino... It's special. And that special runs through everything about the place - from the decor, to the staff, to the meat, to the wine, to the... everything. Make sure you reserve your table in advance and once you've been there a few times this will pay off with their diner notes ensuring that your waiting staff know exactly what wine you like, exactly how you want your steak cooked, exactly which starter you always have. Because lets face it unless you're going to a restaurant every week it's really hard to do that kind of thing for the staff (to look like they know you that is, to treat you special), but Gaucho does it brilliantly - part of doing this is their diner notes, and part of this is their absolutely brilliant staff. From the second you enter the door and have your coat put into the cloakroom, to sitting at the bar, to being seated at your table, to being shown the meat board, to your wine arriving, and ... well you get the picture, the staff at Gaucho are second to none in my opinion. No request is too small, as they're happy to cater for most every whim you might have with regard your visit. But the food and wine you say? With a wine list that runs into the hundreds at price points from £20 up to £200 and beyond, in all the colours that you're expect from an Argentine restaurant, if you can't find something you like then you probably don't like wine... But if you can't find anything you like and you're lucky enough to be visiting on one of the nights that Phil Crozier, Gaucho's Chief Sommelier and Wine Buyer/Creator is on the premises, then the chances are he'll be able to find you a gem! The food then... Did I mention the meat board? That's where the amazing waiting staff come around at the start of your meal and show you different cuts and sizes of the meat that you could be eating if you're lucky... If you're new to Gaucho, definitely ask to see it... The dead cow wants you to admire it! So, the sausage platter is £20 - which is a lot of cash for a starter. And it's only made up of 5 sausages and a red pepper. And is THE BEST STARTER in Leeds, if not the UK, if not the WORLD. If you manage to not order 2 of these and actually choose to have a steak for your main course, then there are all the choices you would expect - rump, sirloin, fillet and rib-eye - albeit all with their Argentine name... and so long as you don't want one of their marinated options (which you should totally go for) they're available from 200g all the way up to 2kg... and no matter what your preference for cut and size you better believe that the guys and girls behind the grill there, they're half angel, half demon and will create you something that tastes beyond what you thought possible. The first time I ever went to Gaucho I made the mistake of asking for a steak knife... I'd ordered a chateaubriand and thought it might need more than the butter knife that i had... when meat based perfection arrived I almost laughed at myself for ever having asked the question. All of this of course can come at a price and if you want to you can spend many a hundred of pounds there - but equally if you're on a budget you can get two steaks along with a potato based side, steak sauce and a shared bottle of wine for £80... Which again isn't the cheapest, but without a doubt the experience that is Gaucho is worth it. When I die, I want to go to Gaucho.
