Having previously visited Grill On The Alley, their Manchester based sister restaurant, my Other Half and I were hoping for a similar level of quality when we visited Blackhouse. Sculpted shrubs frame the stairs leading up to the restaurant, which boasts a balcony for al fresco eaters and smokers the year round. When entering the restaurant, there are a number of booths next to the glass front of the building which provides an airy place to eat, with light pouring into the space. The bar area is a visual treat, decorated with a mixture of wire and exposed light bulb fixtures suspended from the ceiling at varying heights. It is an aesthetic success, and for that reason Blackhouse should also be considered for the sole purpose of drinking on a night out. On our visit, we were guided to the darker booths towards the rear of the restaurant, but on a miserable Sunday in January, that suited us. The only disadvantage of being placed there is the view outside. Although a few large ferns have been erected in an attempt to disguise the concrete office blocks, their brazen ugliness is apparent. This is not the fault of Blackhouse however, I blame the architects of the 1970's. Still riding on the self indulgent and gluttonous bandwagon of Christmas, we decided to push the boat out as far as it would go, and then maybe take a little holiday on it. To start, we shared the Blackhouse platter. I enjoy selecting dishes which the restaurant has attached its name to, it suggests a certain degree of pride. The first element of the dish were some fish cakes with a sweet chilli dip. They were unrecognisable from the insipid, inferior versions served up in bad pubs nationwide. The salmon was wonderfully spiced, and was the primary flavour. The secondary part to the dish was the skewered peri peri chicken served with a chilli infused satay sauce. I thought the length of lemongrass used to skewer the meat, ensured it remained wonderfully moist. Finishing off the platter was some lamb kofta with a mint yogurt dip. The meat packed a big punch in terms of flavour, and tasted like a healthier version of the much maligned snack. The entire dish was a satisfying and promising start to the meal. Onto the main course. I can not convey my love for steak. Any cut, any sauce, I could eat it for breakfast. Due to health and hygiene reasons, I don't. We both opted for the 10oz fillet steak, with jugs of peppercorn and red wine sauce. The meat was delectable. Char grilled perfectly on its exterior, and beautifully pink throughout, this was fillet at its exquisite best. The steak knives were rendered redundant, the meat was so tender. A mound of golden chips, and some steamed broccoli and green beans with shallots completed our selection. With enthusiasm akin to Henry VIII, and with a couple of breaks, we devoured the whole feast, deeming it all far too tasty to abandon. The service we received was excellent, very attentive without being invasive. There is often live music in the restaurant, hinted at by the presence of a piano. The meal was a gastronomic triumph. We completed out indulgence with a few pints of Guinness, an exemplary Sunday! I would highly recommend Blackhouse to my fellow steak appreciators.

Well if you're feeling rather affluent then this place is perfect for you! There's only really the price that I can be critical of Blackhouse for, although I do only seem to go there in January when they do their half price food offer. There were 6 of us on this visit and everyone commented on how great the food was, and between us we sure sampled quite a bit of the menu! The staff are clearly above minimum wage and they seemed genuinely happy in their jobs. The venue is well presented, and had a gorgeous view of the snow during our time there. If someone else is paying, then I'd happily go back, but otherwise I'll be waiting for my next yearly visit in January 2014!

I was invited back to the Blackhouse by the management team to hopefully right the previous wrongs and restore my faith back in what I'd heard was a really good place to eat. This visit was more like what I'd initially expected. Being as it was a meal also for our 2nd Wedding anniversary I was so hoping for it to be better than I expected and I'm glad we took that chance. We arrived for our 7.30pm reservation and received a warm greeting into a very bustling atmosphere. We were consulted on where we would like to be sat and found a nice booth tucked away at the back which gave a great view to watch all the goings on and once again, appreciate the excellent house Piano player. The restaurant was very busy and the number of staff reflected this as was more than I'd seen on my previous visit. Our initial drinks order was taken by a very enthusiastic waiter, we were advised of the specials and what they had ran out of (always good to get that in early as I'd be so disappointed to select if off the menu and then be told it's gone!) and then we were given time to choose our food and wine. Again, the waiter was very attentive- suggesting accompaniments and sauces to compliment the dishes. As I'd already told the Mr, I had to try the oysters again as they had been my highlight from my initial visit, I opted for 6 Oysters and he the Calamari. The tastes for both were spot on. My Oysters were big and juicy looking and the platter they were presented on was lovely. I ate them alternating with the shallots and the Tabasco, they slipped down nicely. The Mr agreed they were good. Light and crispy batter for the calamari with it being cooked to perfection and a lovely aioli to dip them in pleased him and we wasted no time in polishing the lot off. Our dishes were cleared in good time and we were able to take in what was going on around us. All the tables seem to be dealt with just as well as us including the 15 people in the party nearby. I did ask one of the women her thoughts on the place while we were in the ladies and she said she was very happy with how things had gone- all food out on time, all orders correct and all enjoyed very much and she'd definitely recommend and come again. Our main courses were presented promptly and were visually delicious. I'd opted for the 'special' which was a rump steak in a chicken liver reduction on fondant potato with a side of asparagus and the Mr had posh surf & turf with fries. My steak was cooked medium- to perfection just as I'd asked. Nicely brown on the outside while maintaining it's juiciness and the sauce and potato were excellent additions to the dish- the asparagus was excellent but I felt 3 spears was a bit of a mean portion :-( My Mr was a tad disappointed with his dish, not the quality of the food, he just felt it didn't work well together for him but he didn't waste any of it!!! The scallops were nice and juicy and the steak was exactly as he wanted- rare. The chips were good and he was very generous in giving me all the crispy ones to soak up my sauce. We cleaned our plates between us, everything was delicious. Shamefully, we decided to partake in sampling the dessert menu. I opted for the sticky toffee pudding and himself the creme brulee, both were delectable. Irish coffee and an Earl grey T polished off a rather fine meal and we left with very full belies and faith restored. For the quality of the food alone i would have given 5 stars and highly recommend you visit there- especially for a special occasion or treat as it's a little pricey. Just a few things niggled me though- Mean portion size on the asparagus We had to ask for the background music to be turned off so we could appreciate the piano player We had differing servers for the wine/starters/mains being brought out which was a bit confusing as to who was ultimately looking after us. It felt a tad like the staff were overcompensating this time to make up for the prior visit. Overall I was happy to have gone back. Thank you Blackhouse.

Went for dinner last night (Tuesday)....I was worried that being a weekday there would be no atmosphere. I was wrong! The restaurant was packed! The live music was great and the food and drink were all 5*. Can't recommend this restaurant enough, never fails to deliver top food and service. Well worth the money!

I'm pretty sure that when I started Yelping, this fine restaurant was one of the first I had read about on here, and I've been dying to visit ever since. Promises of meaty expeditions, classy interior, live piano playing and a snazzy bar had all been made mention of, and that alone is enough to entice my carnal desires for a good feed. But, like the one ring, thoughts of steak and sustenance fell by the wayside for aeons, forgotten, lost in time. And then, the implacable call of 50% off in January wooed me back, a siren's song one cannot ignore. For deals such as this, you must book online. Let me tell you how easy that is. It's easy. It took less than five minutes, the booking confirmation was delivered straight into my inbox, and I was set. Table for two, 9pm, meat would be had. We arrived at about 8.25pm, in time for a warm up drink at the bar and ascended the steps to a bustling restaurant. The service was welcoming and relaxed from the get-go, and we were shown to the bar for a pre-dinner drink. They've a number of classics cocktails, wines and other sips to enjoy, and we opted for the classic Bellini. Made freshly before our eyes, it was the perfect pre-cursor. (I know, it's not a complicated drink, but it looked pro.) Whilst the music and the chatter inside is perhaps a little louder than some might enjoy, it wasn't difficult to talk and hear ourselves, and provided a lively atmosphere. Shortly after we were shown to our table, and given menus to peruse. And then I realised the chap serving us was an old friend! I'll point out, at this moment, that this had no effect on the service received; he was as attentive to us as he was to every other table, as were all the staff. It's clear that this is a quality machine, and the folks that work here are dedicated. In fact, every member of staff we spoke to were fantastic, friendly, and couldn't do enough. I particularly enjoyed the random outbursts of song from varied staff members, as they went about their business! Going by the recommendations, I ordered a large Malbec to accompany the Chateaubriand for two. It is one of the more expensive on the list, at £52.50, but remember you're sharing it. Let's get to the meat of it. 30 minutes of chatter later, and our delicious steak arrived. It comes complete with two little fryer baskets of chips, a dish of green beans, mushroom and béarnaise sauce. It sits on its own special raised wire platform, which makes it feel all the more enticing, and the instant it was placed before us I knew we'd been taken care of. We'd asked for medium, as my dining partner was wary, and I suppose if I were to have one niggle it might be that this was clearly rare. As it happens, I was overjoyed, as I love a rare steak -but would my friend cope? Turns out, she absolutely did. It was the best steak she'd ever had in her life, and I think I come close to seconding the notion. Everything you desire in a hunk of steak -warm through, beautifully seared at the edges, and melt in your mouth. The chips, beans and mushrooms (ordered as an extra side) all matched in perfect harmony to sing songs of flavour and taste on my tongue, and the béarnaise sauce, which I'd not tried before, was delectable. I can see what Tammy said about the skin on the sauce, but I'm not sure if that just occurred after we'd had it a while. In any case, the flavour was as good throughout. We were offered desserts, but to no avail, for even such a steak shared between two was enough to fully sate my pre-starved stomach. (I'd saved up room over the course of the day.) I opted for a dessert wine, again taking recommendation, and it was spot on. I can't recommend the Maury Grenat enough to settle you after a session here. We took one final tipple outside after paying, and sat under the heated parasols to round off a perfectly wonderful evening. Why not five stars? Well, I do wish I could have heard the piano player a little more clearly, but understand that it was a busy restaurant, and people like to chat. The atmosphere was a touch loud, but that does go toward proving it's a popular place. In any case, it was a first visit, so it gives me an excuse to return! In summary, for service and sustenance, this place is top notch. I highly recommend.

It may surprise you but I used to be a vegan. Stop laughing…read more I spent my Uni years harbouring the false belief that I could put right all my hardcore partying at a physiological level by eating nothing but vegetables, pulses and grains. This went well for the first few months and I may well have been the healthiest (and sadly also windiest) party poppet that Leeds has ever seen. Then came the day I made a devastating discovery. Monster Munch are vegan. And that was that. All healthy home-cooked vegan feasts were immediately eschewed for a diet of nought but variously flavoured Monster Munch dipped in hummus. Eating nothing but crisps and mashed chick peas for 3 years is not something I'd recommend. Then one day I cracked. Sliding down Briggate on a wave of vitamin starved misfiring synapses I found myself stood outside Burger King foaming at the mouth and stamping my feet like a nervous horse bound for Tesco. No less than 4 Rodeo Burgers later I was forced, due to digestive 'unpleasantness', to spend the rest of the week in bed with a bucket. So you'd think I'd learn wouldn't you? But no. I dumped my hippy treads and embarked on a new career as eater of all things living and dead, there is ne'er a creature walking this earth that I will not willingly pounce upon for an appreciative nibble and the mighty steakhouse is my new Jerusalem. So it was no real surprise that for Valentine's Day my boyfriend took me the most direct route twixt living cow and my eager gullet. Gaucho is impossibly slick. I rather suspect the staff have been augmented with some sort of biological hovercraft system, they seem to float toward you beaming smiles of perfect professionalism out of their inhumanly white and even dentition. This is by no means a cheap night but bar the rather overpriced wines you get what you pay for- delicious and serious cocktails delivering a multitude of clearly distinguishable flavours, succulent and perfectly cooked steaks with tasty and interesting side dishes, a cheese board that would cause a cardiac in even your most experienced mouse affineur and the opportunity to sit back and giggle at the very serious clientele with their 6" inch heels, frozen faces and identikit figures as they struggle to understand their footballer boyfriend's monosyllabic conversation whilst nibbling a single chip. Arf! Silly tarts! I would agree that the music loses Gaucho a star, I know it's a la mode in Brentwood to drown out the mindless verbal diarrhoea of your braindead dining companion with thumping techno in even the most sedate restaurant environment but this is Yorkshire and occasionally people have something interesting to say. Well some of us do. Not too sure about tables 3, 5, 6, 9, 10, 12 ,14 and 20.....THUMP THUMP THUMP (pause) "...but then I said 'yeah' and she said 'yeah but no', know what I mean?"...THUMP THUMP THUMP THUMP The food at Gaucho was utterly delicious, the service impeccable and the surroundings stylish considering how many cows were flayed to achieve it. Put simply, if you want to impress then this is a great place to take a date....if you know your date well and want to stuff her full of meat, herby chips and booze until she doesn't know what's what then take her to Fazenda.

Let's first caveat this then - I love steak. And I love red wine. And I love both at the same time…read moreeven more than on their own. Gaucho then... If I were a religious man and believed in the pearly gates and flocks of angels, then Gaucho would be the place that sat just beyond the fence and was populated by cherub faced waiting staff. Gaucho isn't a restaurant, it's an experience... should you manage to find the stairs that lead down to the basement on Park Row, you'll be confronted by surroundings that no place in Leeds really comes close to. And it's not going to be everyones cup of tea of course. The hidden little corners and booths, the cow clad seating, the near darkness that can make it hard to navigate, the chandeliers that seem to give off lumens at a fraction of what you would expect for their size... Garish? Over the top? Slightly eccentric? Maybe. As I say, it's not RBG, it's not Blackhouse, it's not Piccolino... It's special. And that special runs through everything about the place - from the decor, to the staff, to the meat, to the wine, to the... everything. Make sure you reserve your table in advance and once you've been there a few times this will pay off with their diner notes ensuring that your waiting staff know exactly what wine you like, exactly how you want your steak cooked, exactly which starter you always have. Because lets face it unless you're going to a restaurant every week it's really hard to do that kind of thing for the staff (to look like they know you that is, to treat you special), but Gaucho does it brilliantly - part of doing this is their diner notes, and part of this is their absolutely brilliant staff. From the second you enter the door and have your coat put into the cloakroom, to sitting at the bar, to being seated at your table, to being shown the meat board, to your wine arriving, and ... well you get the picture, the staff at Gaucho are second to none in my opinion. No request is too small, as they're happy to cater for most every whim you might have with regard your visit. But the food and wine you say? With a wine list that runs into the hundreds at price points from £20 up to £200 and beyond, in all the colours that you're expect from an Argentine restaurant, if you can't find something you like then you probably don't like wine... But if you can't find anything you like and you're lucky enough to be visiting on one of the nights that Phil Crozier, Gaucho's Chief Sommelier and Wine Buyer/Creator is on the premises, then the chances are he'll be able to find you a gem! The food then... Did I mention the meat board? That's where the amazing waiting staff come around at the start of your meal and show you different cuts and sizes of the meat that you could be eating if you're lucky... If you're new to Gaucho, definitely ask to see it... The dead cow wants you to admire it! So, the sausage platter is £20 - which is a lot of cash for a starter. And it's only made up of 5 sausages and a red pepper. And is THE BEST STARTER in Leeds, if not the UK, if not the WORLD. If you manage to not order 2 of these and actually choose to have a steak for your main course, then there are all the choices you would expect - rump, sirloin, fillet and rib-eye - albeit all with their Argentine name... and so long as you don't want one of their marinated options (which you should totally go for) they're available from 200g all the way up to 2kg... and no matter what your preference for cut and size you better believe that the guys and girls behind the grill there, they're half angel, half demon and will create you something that tastes beyond what you thought possible. The first time I ever went to Gaucho I made the mistake of asking for a steak knife... I'd ordered a chateaubriand and thought it might need more than the butter knife that i had... when meat based perfection arrived I almost laughed at myself for ever having asked the question. All of this of course can come at a price and if you want to you can spend many a hundred of pounds there - but equally if you're on a budget you can get two steaks along with a potato based side, steak sauce and a shared bottle of wine for £80... Which again isn't the cheapest, but without a doubt the experience that is Gaucho is worth it. When I die, I want to go to Gaucho.

So, it's about time I wrote my review for Crafthouse, being as I went a while ago, and haven't yet…read moreshared my thoughts. I was going to meet a friend for lunch, and we took advantage of their lunch time deal, saving a few pennies. Now, bear in mind that you're saving little compared to other lunch deals, but that the extra cost does assure you this: the food is great. I don't know what else to say, although if you've read my reviews before, you'll know there's always more to elaborate on. I chose the roast chicken, being as I can't resist a Sunday lunch, and for dessert the creme brûlée. The chicken came in the most delightful pot, and the leg portion was more than enough for lunch. It felt like I was basically having an evening meal, which is no bad thing. We had ordered some side veg, that had been steamed and buttered with finesse, as much as you might consider veg to be cooked with flair. The leg came complete with the gravy of goddess, and couldn't have been cooked better in my humblest opinion. It was juicy, tender, and was finished off with a crispy bit of skin. I'm getting hungry just thinking about it, and I rarely find chicken interesting enough to ponder. The creme brûlée was probably one of the nicest I've had. Not overly creamy, not sugary. A perfect balance. As for the ambience, well. I guess this would depend on your preference. I can't deny there's an air of exclusivity, and not least due to the prices. That being said, I'd encourage a visit for several reasons. As a treat it's fabulous, and I can tell you now, I've walked in wearing jeans and had no comment. Not even a look. The staff are all lovely, and the view is, naturally, totally glorious as well. Locally sourced menu, beautifully presented, and super tasty. Job's a good 'un!

This set menu was very good and the staff super friendly and quick. The firsts thing you'll notice when you look at the menu is that every dish has tons of ingredients. That's because it's all meticulously arranged and the very delicate. The food isn't outstanding but very enjoyable. We also ordered a bottle of Rioja which was nice and not too expensive (about £30). Although we didn't get one, there's tons of tables and seats by the window which means you get a beautiful view of central Leeds. I would come back and recommend it.
