Just one of the best meals I had whilst in England. Never had a proper Sunday roast and decided to try. Everything was stellar. Service to food. They do get quite busy so arrive early one open to secure a spot or make a reservation. Definitely a staple of York.

Food looked great so started with high expectations but was cold and disappointing
Aurore L.

Finally got to eat here on our second day in York after three attempts. This place came highly recommended multiple times by our hotel staff so we persisted and kept trying to get a reservation and were finally rewarded with a late reservation with high expectations and alas we were extremely disappointed. Since our reservation was so late (almost 9 pm) we took the time to review the menu beforehand and knew exactly what we were going to order. As soon as a waitress came over we ordered our meals. A starter and 2 mains with the instruction to bring it all out at the same time as our meal. The meal which consisted of a steak and salad for me and the pork belly main and chicken wing starter took over 45 mins to get to us. This didn't seem a huge deal initially since as mentioned previously we were hungry but talk about disappointing. The steak was cold and had obviously been resting a really long time. I ate it despite finding it unappetising and cold as I was starving. My dinner companion was similarly unimpressed. Slimly cold pork belly just doesn't have the same appeal you expect from some good crackling on hot pork belly. Given the price of food at this this place and the many recommendations I really expected more. I will likely never visit this place again. Hopefully this was just an off night but I'm not taking any chances here again. There are too many other amazing establishments in York to pay such exorbitant prices for poor service and mediocre food. The hype definitely wasn't worth it.

Very warm and inviting. Layout was long and narrow and felt a little cramped but service was good, quick and sufficient, food was delicious, especially the beef casserole and cost very reasonable. I had a very pleasant evening at Ate O'Clock and felt very comfortable being a solo diner and would eat here again.

Part of a 3 course set menu: grilled chicken breast on lemon butter sauce with new potatoes and French fries
Tinnie L.

I've passed by this restaurant many times while crossing Ousegate and have been wanting to try it for a while. I decided to order from the 3 course set menu (£19.95). For the starter, I got the deep fried calamari with garlic mayonnaise. The crispness of the calamari paired with the garlic mayonnaise made for a delightful appetizer. For my main dish, I got the grilled chicken breast in lemon butter with new potatoes. I decided to substitute the seasonal veggies with French fries. The portion size was a bit smaller than I anticipated but there was an abundance of fries. For desserts, I went with the fresh crepe filled with chocolate sauce, banana, strawberries, and a scoop of vanilla ice cream. However, because of the 1.5 hour table limit, I was never served my crepe before we were asked to leave. We had waited almost 40 minutes after our main dish but no one ever came to check with us and to give me a chance to ask for my crepe. I was given the option for takeaway but couldn't get it with ice cream because it would have melted by the time I got home. However, I still had to pay the same price even without the ice cream scoop. Additionally, because I was taking away food, I was asked to sign a waiver, essentially stating that the restaurant was not liable for anything that happens to my food, or me, once we leave the premise. I found that very odd and have even asked my friends, and everyone told me that they had never had to sign a waiver to take away food. It made makes me wonder whether something bad happened in the past. Overall, this was a good experience. It is definitely pricey, but I may come back another time. Hopefully I'll get to enjoy all my orders at the restaurant instead of being forced to take it away.

I wasn't a fan of the cocktail flight because it was a bit foamy, but I had better luck with the food. Had a steak special that was reasonably priced and cooked well with a side of broccolini. Enjoyed a salad to start off my meal that was light and fresh. I enjoyed the decor of the establishment with a fun bar area and you could watch the food being prepared. We started off with one waitress and finished our dining experience with a different waitress who was in training but she was very sweet. Overall enjoyable dining experience.

When it arrived I thought 'hmm shrimp is not as big as I'd have thought' but then I tasted it and the sauce, shrimp, bread and veggies together were one of the best shrimp dishes I've ever had. I even saved the left over sauce (had it put in a ramekin) and put it on my steak. It was that good. My wife got the pork chops special and it was good too but the beans that were served with it were spectacular. Beans??? I didn't know they could be spectacular. Truffle chips (fries) were quality too. The home made black sheep sticky toffee pudding was also a must try. Lastly, Gosia, our waitress, was knowledgeable and took great care of us. When we are in York, we will be back.

Again, a review for dealing with our large party of 12!…read more They sat us down and cheerfully gave us the menus and specials quickly, it was so hot but they quickly put the fans on and gave us a lot of bottles of water for the table, bringing out warm bread and pots of standard and garlic butter. I had the Yorkshire pudding for starter, and the lamb for main, everything came out at good times, and no one was left waiting much longer than the first to be served at any point. The sides were wonderful, all good size portions and amazing gravy. If I was being seriously picky, the only thing I would say was the meringue on the lemon meringue pie wasn't crispy on the top at all, but that's personal taste, and it still tasted amazing! Wonderful food, wonderful service, and the best part was, other smaller tables there had service just as fast and friendly and didn't suffer because of the large party, so they definitely know how to cope!!

Nice relaxed atmosphere and the staff were pleasant. My sausage started was good and well seasoned, portion size was very generous. My steak was cooked well however it was lacking seasoning and tasted a little bland, I did enjoy the mushrooms they serve it with and also the home style chips were nice. My partners pate was good, the chutney was a little sweet as an accompaniment but again the portion size was good. Her duck was cooked very well and had some good flavour to it. A little biased but some more Australian/ New Zealand wine on the menu would be great. I would definitely like to return and explore the menu some more!

On the evening we were there- they had one sitting and it was at 7 pm. We were one of three couples dining there the evening we went and the dining room holds about 8 or so tables so it was a quiet night for them. They start you out in a living room adjacent to the dining room where Chris, the waiter, brings you a glass of champagne before the Chef comes out and sits down with you to chat about what food you do and do not like to eat. This was a very nice touch. They then start bringing food out to you in the living room while you decide on the wine you will like with dinner. The wine choice is complicated by the fact that you are blind to the menu. We spoke to Chris about this, and he helped us choose a wine. Then the food started to come out. I believe two courses were served in the living room with the sparkling wine before we were all invited to the living room where our other wine was waiting for us on our table. I will attach photos of the food to this review to give an idea of what it was like. Suffice it to say that everything was very good though you need to be a bit adventurous to try this out- you get what you get. It was a great experience!!

Staff seated us inside as I didn't want to dine on the terrace which was very popular. They offer sparking or still water which is a charge so if you want tap, specify with the wait staff. I wasn't that impressed with the items offered on both the regular and specials of the day menus. Hubby liked the sea bass (small piece) over some curry rice? I didn't care for the taste. I got the ox cheeks. The meat was mostly tender but was bland, under seasoned. The sauce with pomegranate seeds was good. It came with fries which were soft, not crispy and I didn't like it at all. Stick up a cheap sign, put in Ye and an E at the end of old and get em tourists in. Maybe it's just me but it just struck me as stale and frumpy. The other pubs we visited were characterful and the welcome in each stood out (not always for good reasons) and their beer choices were pretty meh. It is dog and family-friendly with wheelchair accessibility, and free WiFi. We had one drink here for four folks - two pints and two glasses of wine £22.95 - and while the food menu looked darn good and reasonably priced there was no atmosphere nor character to persuade us to stay. The young barmaid behind the counter was functional but devoid of easy chat. I'm glad on reflection that we went to the trembling madness next - their booze selection was stunning in comparison and cheaper at £22.10 for a similar round of better quality drinks. I sure wouldn't return here.
