This browns is really nice and a great place to come eat or for a drink. I went with a colleague when staying in leeds for work and we had a really nice meal. I had mussles and then salmon - both of which very tasting and good value. The decor and atmosphere was really nice, i would definitely go back. read more

blah. I guess I'm in the minority here, but then again it appears I'm not, so really the lesson here with Browns is, it's hit and miss. I had an experience pretty similar to Ian, was made to wait for what seemed likfe forever and an age for a simple service in a seemingly quiet dinner service, which was ridiculous. The front of house bloke, to call him a maitre d' would be an insult to those that do their job well, was sleek for all the wrong reasons and frankly rude, he and his finger wagging were most irksome. The menu seemed over inflated in descriptions for what it actually was, and when it arrived I really wished I'd hoped over to Brio's next door for some good ole wholesome pizza. The building is gorgeous, and again, for me, that is where the charm ends. Having seen what the other guys think I guess it's really a case of who ever is working as to how your experience goes. Ah, Browns. Grand on the outside - grimy on the inside. Perhaps a little harsh - on first impression the decor appears to match the outside but after 5 minutes in there you can see the cracks in the showbiz skin. I have not been to eat here - so can only vouch for the drinking experience. I've been a few times, Saturday nights seem busy but with a nice atmosphere. I went again recently and couldn't help myself Here goes.. I went on a Wednesday night with a friend for a quiet soft drink and a chat. Browns seems good for a social on a weekday evening - plenty of space, no loud music, etc. However - bar staff = rude. No acknowledgement upon approaching the bar and we were left waiting for ~5 minutes to be served. The barman who served us seemed unimpressed that we weren't after one of their cocktails. The bar definitely hadn't been polished or cleaned properly in a while. Greasy fingerprints, rings where drinks had been and a dull lustre to the beer taps were all right in your face. Despite being able to count over 10 staff working the restaurant and bar services I could see almost every 'spare' table still held it's previous occupant's empty glasses and mess. New patrons were forced to try and find a fresh table amongst this. The table we sat at clearly had a surface that was once polished and highly decadent - though it didn't look like anyone had even waved a cloth near it in a long time, let alone put some decent elbow grease into getting it shiny again. Upon clearing tables, the staff just took the empty glasses - no sign of cloths, cleaning products, anything. If you've got it, Browns, you need to flaunt it properly. Otherwise people'll suss you out and go elsewhere. read more

Oh it pains me to give Browns just two stars because I WANT to love it, I WANT them to get it right, I WANT to be able to go in there knowing I am going to a beautiful elegant venue where I am willing to pay that little bit more for sparkling service and a reliably upmarket experience. But. Every. Single. Damn. Time.... it lets me down. And yet like a mother taking an errant child back to her breast I do keep trying, however I think it may be time to pull that child's pants down and give it a good public spanking. Browns gets a star for being a beautiful building. It also gets a star for, at the right time of day i.e mid afternoon before things get busy, having a pleasing dining area and usually good food. Two stars and given without much confidence. And now the reality of the situation. Browns should be a jewel, set high in the crown of Leeds quality drinking and dining. It should be something we can be proud of, somewhere that trips off your tongue the minute someone asks "do you know anywhere in Leeds that's a bit, you know, classy?". It should but it doesn't. Firstly. It's damn filthy. Hours pass without anyone wiping down the bar, sticky with hundreds of spilt drinks. Floors are a skid trap of dropped napkins and general detritus. Once the numbers go up the cleaning evaporates and it just gets more and more unacceptable as the night goes on. Not good enough. Secondly, it's overpriced. I don't mind paying more for a drink if the service, quality and surroundings warrant it. I really really don't mind. But here is where Browns yet again fails to understand its clientele. I DON'T expect to pay £25 (yes, £25) for a martini and a long island iced tea only to be served 90% ice in the tea and have to jostle beer swilling hoodlums across a tacky floor to huddle in a dirty corner on sticky seats. I just don't and that's why it was one drink and deciding I'm just not going to bother going there again. You can run an upmarket drinkery in Leeds. And it can be a success. What you can't do is mash classy and trashy together, never send anyone to wipe down the tables and charge people insulting prices for tiny cocktails that taste of nothing. Browns? Browns has always been a place that attracts me, fantastic location at the head of Park Row, opposite a fantastic gallery, connected to The Light. Having never been there for a midweek drink I was eagerly awaiting an expected high standard. Well... The decor and ambience certainly did satisfy this, but overall I was not that impressed. Firstly, the bar service was poor, we were not acknowledged, notified we would be served shortly, and when asked what we wanted to drink we were faced with rudeness. Secondly, the cleanliness was not up to scratch, the bar had clearly not been wiped for sometime and once seated, during our drink we noticed a fair number of tables throughout filled with glasses and plates. When the overstaffed team did decide to clean up, it was done badly, taking just the glasses and not wiping down for the next layer of service. This is not a difficult task and rule to enforce, it would take a moment and make all the difference. The greasiest of spoons understand this! On our departure, despite passing a number of bar and waiting staff, we were not once noticed or appreciated for our custom. It seems the reputation and decor of Browns overcompensates for a very unorganised system in place. It is a shame as the space is fantastic, and I would much rather be singing its praises. read more

Ladies, grab your flapper dress and long string of pearls ... Browns is oozing with 1920s style charm and grandeur and reminds me of a giant Victorian summerhouse that wouldn't look entirely out of place in an episode of Downton Abbey. There's lots of large leafy greenery, dark wooded furniture and waiters in cute long aprons. There's a definite 'outdoorsy yet indoorsy' vibe to the place which I really love and which sets Browns apart from so many other places. I've been here quite a few times - for food as well as just for drinks - and have been equally pleased with both. There is a decent cocktail selection - the Bellini is a personal favourite - I think it was about £6, so not exactly 1920s prices but far from a rip off either. read more

My last visit was distinctly average. I ordered from the fixed price menu, skipping starters I had a main of steak frites and an orange and lemon treacle tart to follow. The steak frites was ok, but I have certainly had better at Brown's in the past, The steak seamed tiny and the sauce was definitely not as good as I have had previously. Desert I have to say though was faultless. Service was fairly prompt, even with the mess up in the order that they made. Overall, ok but I would head to a steakhouse such as The Blackhouse if having steak or if heading for pizza's maybe somewhere like Viva Pizza or Bibi's. Browns hosts a wonderfully grand setting...marble, polished golds, mirrors and a grand piano...It is a refined area for a champagne cocktail or two and a classy meal. The food quality was very good when I visited and I would gladly pay to have the meal over again. I enjoyed the setting and was not rushed to finish my meal. Staff were very polite and table service was good after the initial wait for a table. It is a beautiful setting and I don't quite understand why anybody could not be enchanted by the surroundings. Cost seems to be the main issue to visitors of Browns, maybe it would be wise to check the menu before entering. I will definitely be re-vising in the near future. read more

It's got a bit of a colonial feel to it, Browns, with palms and dark wood and those big rotating ceiling fans all over the place. It's the sort of place you bring your parents because they're a bit scared of fancy food. Pretty plain menu, as far as I'm concerned, at prices I'd rather pay somewhere nicer or go and have a pizza next door. read more

I had dinner here with my fiance and to be honest I thought it was over-rated. We asked for duck salad, and asked what would go nicely on the side. 'Tomato foccacia' they recommended, at £5 a throw. 'Enough for two' they said, so we ordered one. Mmm! Well, it was half a ciabatta (not a focaccia) spread with lukewarm mashed up cheap (green in parts) tinned tomatoes! It was heavy and cheap and just so dissapointing. The duck salad was nothing to write home about - the duck hadn't been shredded very well and was greasy with the fatty skin left on and even a little bone nestled in the leaves, all ready to choke me. We had a drink each which we finished about half way through the meal, no-one offered to replace it, and finding staff was near impossible. We had to wait about 20 minutes to pay the bill at which point we went on hunt the staff member. The decor is gloomy, dark, not very inviting. I wouldn't visit there again. Prices are way too high for the poor quality of the food. read more

This branch of the ever-popular Brown's is conveniently located in the same building as the cinema, Vue Light. This making it an ideal venue for a pre/post-prandial meal. With it's high ceilings, dark brown wood and leather interiors, and damn good food, I'm happy to eat in Brown's whenever the urge takes me. I must confess, however, that the best thing about this place remains the burger. Oh, the burger! Bacon and cheese-topped patty of beautifully char-grilled beef served in a soft floury bun with an enormous gherkin and soft crunchy chips, the Brown's burger is one of the summits of the up and down British eating experience. Apart from this, the calamari and prawns make great bar snacks and the wine list is excellent. Not to mention the wonderful liquer coffees. And the steak frites. And the pies. And the cocktails. And the burger. And the burger. And the burger . . . read more

Browns is an incredibly posh looking restaurant-bar. The first thing you notice when you enter is it's decor which is dark browns, and whites, and the furnishing which are black leather. The bar area is huge with a massive selection of drinks and the seating areas are divided by shoulder level blocks and steps. The prices here are not as bad as you might expect; quite reasonable in fact. I have not eaten here but the drinks prices are among the same as elsewere in Leeds city centre. The atmosphere is warm and on an evening you could spend all night just relaxing. Will definitely be going again soon. read more

Brown's is one of those places that always looks busy. Which is great if you're looking for a night out. we went there for dinner on spec and had to wiat 15 mins for a table, however the serve was smooth all the way from the bar staff who acknowledged you when you got to the bar to the waiting staff who were attentive without being intrusive. The food was good, although I felt that 3 scallops was tight when I could have had 6 oysters for the same price for the starters! We went on New Years Eve and all the staff were dress up as famous musicians (we were served by Dolly Parton!). It was the only place we could find that was open, so were not sure what to expect but the food was lovely, the staff helpful and the decor tasteful. We went to Browns due to being turned away from another restaurant that didn't take bookings having been told we wouldn't need to book yet then being told there would be an hours wait. I didn't think there would be any chance Browns would have a table free on a Friday night for 4 people, but when we arrived someone greeted us very promptly and we were taken straight to a table by the windows. The service was great, very friendly, and the food was absolutely delicious. I had chicken schnitzel for my main and the hot chocolate brownie for desert - both were gorgeous. The rest of my family had rib eye steak and were very impressed. All in all a very successful night out! read more

Browns is one of those places that seeks to be everything to everyone, and in the process ends up a bit of a mish-mash of styles and tastes. Entering the building you are immediately struck by how ridiculously grand it is, all marble floors, pillars and arched windows, so it is puzzling to say the least when you are seated and presented with a menu which reads like that of a slightly upmarket Wetherspoon's. Equally confusingly, a trendy brunch menu featuring the likes of scrambled free-range eggs on toasted sourdough is offered alongside the impossibly twee-sounding 'puddings and afternoon tea' menu, conjuring images of little old ladies fighting with suited executives for space at the mahogany bar - which isn't that far from the truth. The food tastes as it reads - a bog-standard, gastropub affair - and does nothing to justify its high price tag. While Browns will always impress on architecture alone, my advise is to save your pennies for somewhere that focuses more on its food and less on polishing its floors. read more

I'd never been to Brown's in Leeds before but i had heard great things about it. Took mum there for her birthday and was pleasantly surprised it was relatively quiet on a damp Thursday night. Nice selection of drinks at the huge bar including daily cocktails and specials, so we grabbed our drinks and headed to one of the many high top tables. The table we sat at had a couple of coffee cups, a paid check and was a little dirty, however the server came over and took the check. Just the check. I hoped she would have taken the dirty cups etc but didn't, eventually i picked them up and placed them on an open table next to us. Had a few drinks at the table, thought someone might have come over for table service, but i had to go to the bar each time, maybe that's the rule, not sure but no big deal. Spoke to one of the hostess' and got seated for dinner right away, as i mentioned it was pretty quiet. Beautiful dining area, huge windows that let in lots of natural light, tables are a little close to each other but that's the norm these days in any big city, so no worries. Our server was Bella and she was outstanding, very personable and efficient. My party ordered burgers and i ordered the prawn and crab linguini, to be honest, mine was just ok, very bland and way too much pesto for me and not enough crab. The burgers got rave reviews, home made, a little over cooked for my liking but i don't recall a temperature being offered, again, that might be the norm, personally i prefer a little more on the medium side, they came with great looking chips (fries) some regular and some people ordered the chunky ones, all looked terrific, and we ordered a side of onion rings that looked hand cut and perfectly cooked. Prices were about what you'd expect in a big city, about £12 for the burgers so not a bad deal. The place is really beautiful, it has a relaxed atmosphere, yet its also classy, so great job! read more

My parents insisted on taking me here for dinner one night. I was sceptical because I'd always heard it was expensive, but I was pleasantly surprised when we got our menus and had a look. My parents took advantage of the Lunch/Early menu, which had main courses starting from £6.95. I, not liking anything on that menu, decided to have something off the main menu - prawn and chorizo linguine, which was reasonably priced for such a huge portion at £9.95. The service was a little slow, we stood around for at least 10 minutes before my mum decided to go and ask if they'd seat us or we'd seat ourselves, despite numerous memebers of staff either walking past us or looking over in our direction. Having grown up in Bristol, the Browns there was always a treat saved for family occasions, so maybe now I still hold it as that, a place for special dates in my callender. Therefore, I have minimal qualms with the price-tag, as I hardly go, and tend to savour every last bite. The setting is grander than it maybe should be, with huge windows, marble, mood lighting, swanky looking bar (complete with barman -apron on- watching the world go by polishing glasses) and a piano that is played in the evenings. Having said that, every other Browns I have ever visited from Oxford to Bristol always has a fantastic building and supreme setting. The food has always been great in Browns, offering brunch, lunch and dinner, with multiple 'specials' and a mixture of different European cuisine, and normally the service is also great, positioning it somewhere between a swifter meal in a chain such as Pizza Express and a drawn out evening in Anthony's. read more

I notice how everyone goes on about the decor and how nice it looks from the outside and well...I'm going to do the same because in my eyes that's all this place has going for it really. I went to Browns for a friend's birthday party, there were about 10 of us and maybe this is why I had such a bad experience? When our meals were delivered to us I was more than unimpressed with my Angus burger, it wasn't that hot and really I could have made it myself at home. It wasn't anything special and for about £10, wasn't worth the money either. I did however have a very good time, the atmosphere in here is very relaxed and chilled out and the decor is very glamorous to look at. It reminds me of a nice, classy restaurant Big and Carrie Bradshaw might eat at, only it's Browns, so maybe not. This particular Browns is epic in location. It's in The Light, which makes it perfect for a meal before the \] cinema or night on the town. It's easy to get to with about a 5 minute walk from the train station, you literally just have to walk straight ahead of you, past Greek Street and you're there. I recommend this restaurant for its menu as it does sound delicious, maybe next time I will venture away from your bog standard burger and chips, my bad. read more

Over priced drinks, reasonable vibe if with a good crowd, food not too great!

We went in for dinner on Saturday before Browns closed for refurbishment. As always, we were delighted with the food - it is always absolutely flawless. Starter or scallops was great, cooked to perfection. I had a delicious steak and guiness pie which was delicious, the pastry was so good! Shame it was only on top of the pie because I could have eaten the base too! My partner had fillet steak cooked medium, very good, slightly overdone on one side but that's how she likes it so no complaints here! The desert, salted caramel profiteroles, was one of the most delicious things I've ever eaten. It was that good. The front of house staff were great, I sent our compliments to the chef as we had such a great meal. Browns has been my favourite place to eat and drink for many years now, last night only reinforced that opinion! read more

Browns has an excellent reputation locally which it simple deserves. Although it is quite pricey the extra money paid its worth it for the beautiful food and great service you recieve. Try to grab a window seat if can to see the hustle and bustle of city centre life. read more

Good informal and not bad value at all. There's a large main dining room which means you can have an informal evening without worrying about people listening in. If you are looking for haut cuisine and a world class wine list then this isn't the place for you. But with its relaxed feel and casual approach it does exactly what it sets out to do. read more

The food at Browns has always been top notch and its a nice place to go and chill out after work although it can get very busy on weekends so be prepared to queue at the to get your drinks! Its a bit more on the pricey side compared to some of the other bars in Leeds but if you are after something a bit more upmarket and a nice romantic meal I'd def give Browns a try. Nice restaurant to visit. I had dinner here having visited Leeds on business. I asked for a larger table to be able to spread my papers out on. No problem for Browns to sort out for me. Ordered the steak frittes and a desert afterwards. Both arrived really quickly! Service from Luke the waiter was excellent he was polite, patient and attentive. Less could be said for the other waiters who spent more time patting themselves on the back and chatting with each other than focussing on the customers like me. Browns is really nice little restaurant, with friendly staff who are happy to stop and go through the menu or recommend items. The food is very well cooked, served quickly and it is easy to get hold of a member of staff if you need anything. It is quite expensive, but is well worth it for the quality of food and service. The restaurant is well decorated, comfortable and very clean. I would definitely recommend it for the ambience alone. read more

We went to Browns after issues at Cafe Rouge across the square and glad we did. It has a great atmosphere, multi level seating areas to stop issues with noise when busy and an offer on cocktails for Sunday to Wednesday. It's a good job as they can soon add up if you're paying full price which is between £5 - £7, offer price of £3.50. The booth we sat at had a massive rip in the seat but it didn't bother us at all as it was comfy and a nice place to be. Food wise, I had some prawns in a cheese sauce which was great and my partner a prawn cocktail. For main I had Guinea Fowl which was nice and my partner had Venison which if I am honest, wasn't as good as I expected. This wasn't down to the chef as he/she had cooked it perfectly. The meat just wasn't that great but these things happen. Our waiter was so so, neither rude nor pleasant but a gentleman who we are pretty sure is the manager was great, really friendly and gave us great service I will certainly be going back. read more

Nice place, food and atmosphere is good but the waiter chased me after I left because they said i had not paid. Turns out that having left £20 for the bill on the table and left, someone must of knicked it!! We visited Sunday 21st Dec 2014 and I arrived with my partner around 13:00 and we were seated promptly, and ordered drinks. Despite the usual menu being outside the doors we were given the Sunday menu, there were some things that looked nice so we ordered the following :- Crab and avocado stack, Caesar salad (requested with no anchovies), Brown lobster and sea herb mayonnaise sandwich and the Roast rolled rib eye of National Park lamb and grille cutlet. I was told that the restaurant had run out of gem lettuce so I agreed to substitute some other salad leaves - what I was brought was a green salad with vinaigrette - nothing like a Caesar salad. The Crab and Avocado was small, lacking in seasoning and taste. Both very disappointing. So we looked forwards to our main courses, but were to be further disappointed. The sandwich seemed to be on normal white bread as there was no sourdough flavour, the filling was the same as the crab starter with a sole piece of lobster in it and the whole thing was so dry we had to ask for some mayonnaise and definitely not worth the advertised £13.00. The lamb dish was a small, badly cooked, flabby cutlet and an equally small piece of the 'rolled rib eye', both lukewarm and in a dreary brown and burnt tasting sauce with a few pieces of samphire and a solitary fondant potato as the only vegetables. Outrageous for the £16.75 asking price. Nowhere does the Sunday menu offer details of extra vegetables available nor were we offered any at the point of ordering, the whole dish was smaller than some starters I have had. I requested some green vegetables from the server who brought over the full weekday menu, I chose broccoli with blue cheese and hollandaise. Then I was left there with a plate of already tepid food rapidly coagulating while the veg was cooked and served. When it arrived I found that it too was tepid and that the hollandaise sauce was obviously made with margarine or some other cooking fat with a distinctly waxy taste. We declined ordering any dessert as we had been so disappointed. After a substantial 15 minute wait I finally got someone's attention and received the bill of £67.15 which quite frankly is disgusting for the amount and quality of the food. The waiting staff were on the whole good but unless the food takes a considerable jump in quality and value I will be loath to visit Browns again for any reason as it is very much style over substance. read more
