Following a splendid evening meal with family at Gaucho we decided to have a change of scenery and pop next door to Decanter. What a mistake! In the first instance they were quite accommodating, encouraging us to sit at a table that initially had a reserved notice on but it soon went downhill from this point. The waitress, about the same age or slightly younger than my daughter, who was with us, rather patronisingly decided we should have water before she considered even providing the wine list. Let us be quite clear here, yes we were laughing and joking as family often do, we'd just enjoyed a great meal out which is now difficult given that a babysitter is required but nothing more than that.
We can only assume that they do not require customers or we didn't fit the profile of those few that were in the bar.... seemingly quiet and one assumes a tad boring. Being an ex Company Director, sober and well dressed I expect a little respect from those providing a service especially when they are younger than I am. Obviously this isn't part of Decanter's training or "lifestyle". Having read their website subsequently (pretentious claptrap) I don't imagine they want or need customers. Their wine list certainly isn't that "adventurous" in my experience and doesn't "set them apart".
Still their loss was Friends of Ham's gain. Totally different attitude and welcoming staff!
At least the people at Decanter can sleep easy in their bed at night knowing that I will not be recommending them to any of my professional contacts in the Legal Profession, Financial Services or property sectors! read more
