Such a disappointment! I had done a lot of research on bars and restaurants in York ahead of my trip and The Botanist seemed like the ideal new pub to try. It had been written up about, the bloggers were posting about and it got good reviews so I was excited to make a reservation for myself, my mom, aunt and Grandma.
I had read they were known for their cocktails and we were all ready for a drink after a long day of walking and sightseeing. Unfortunately, my mom's blackberry fizz was the only good flavored drink out of the 4 we ordered, .but had no taste of gin or alcohol. My aunts mojito was so bland it could have been flavored water, my grandma's Pinot Gris wine from Australia tasted like watered down Church wine and my Thai chili drink had an alright flavor but absolutely no spice (I had asked for well above medium spice and they had simply cut up chilis and dropped them in the drink without a proper muddle. I had to muddle the drink with the end of my fork to get any chili flavor).
We were hoping the food would be better... but that wasn't the case. First, I am gluten-free and I was having a LOVELY time finding GF restaurant items in York (much easier than the States) and looking at The Botanist menu online, I thought I'd be fine. There was no separate GF or allergy menu. I was handed a allergy sheet that I had to cross reference with their table menu and almost every item had gluten - even the salads! When this happens, it typically means all the food is pre-made and processed. We should have gotten up and left right then... Alas, my mom and grandma settled for the scampi and chips (which were labeled as deep-fried) and my aunt and I split the Flattened Rump from the BBQ section.
It almost makes me laugh how shocked we were when we got our food. It all looked like it had been frozen and warmed in the microwave. The scampi were little nuggets (like what you would get at Long John Silvers in the States lol) that were battered and clearly had been baked to be warmed up - no crispy deep fried layer. The shrimp was barely discernible. The fries were fine but nothing to write home about and the tartare sauce so pretty generic. The Flattened Rump couldn't have been more than 1/4" thick and had nothing to do with BBQ. It had no smoky flavor of a grill and you could barely taste the marinade described on the menu. I will say the single roasted mushroom on the plate was pretty good.
We were hoping for dessert but everything was so disappointing, we wrapped up quickly and headed out to find gelato in town.
There are so many cute and delicious places in York! I would highly recommend doing your stomach a favor and spending your time and money elsewhere! read more
