No ghost sightings for us, boo! Nice pub space, great seating space and nice ambiance. The staff is friendly and accommodating, helped us figure out what to get. My husband got a Guinness, and the bartender made a shot for me that was very tasty. Can't remember what it was, but it tasted like chocolate. Even being a crowded and popular pub, we were able to find a seat, and it wasn't too loud. We were able to sit and chat and enjoy each other's company. Great spot to hit at the end of a long day in York.

Great atmosphere. Tons of character. Floors all old and uneven. Employees were really nice. They have more stuff in this really really old pub that you could never look at everything in a night. We had the amber beer on tap. Very tasty. Didn't see any ghosts though. But it was still early.

Best pub experience we had in England! A 1600s pub, ghosts and excellent food and drinks, what else do you need in York? Staff was super friendly, locals inside were hilarious and welcoming to us Americans! Husband had a very tasty burger with bacon and he was in heaven! He said it was very juicy and flavorful. Chips were standard and delicious! I had the hunters chicken and chips. Very moist tender chicken with bacon cheese and bbq sauce. Very delicious! Chips again were good. Drinks were excellent! Husband had "too good" of a time with generous servings of jack and coke. I prefer less potent liquor such as Kalhulua and cream. Which was slightly skimpy but not holding them up on it as it's not a drink they normally served. No ghost sightings, however the very medieval feel and crooked building make it very apparent why spirits would be lingering! Best pub hands down for a Proper English pub experience!

Out tour guide recommended this pub as being the old pub in England. We stopped in on a hot day, it was packed. All wooden long tables & chairs. As a group of around 10 people, we got 2 tables right in front, didn't realize there were more tables in the back till I went to the bathroom. We ordered quickly at the front bar and the beer came quickly. Our tour guide bought all of us a drink. Very nice of her. However the food took a long long time, they're probably too busy. I even forgot what I ordered, nothing spectacular, I guess it's just a tourist stop.

Bangers and mash with an excellent cider.

The service was excellent! The bartender asked a couple of locals if they wouldn't mind moving to a smaller table to accommodate our large party. The ambiance was so fun being a spot that dates back to at least the early 16th century we were well aware of the many ghost the place houses. Food was really good, lots of options for local delicacies and items kids would enjoy too.

This place was good! Only problem is that it is always packed and very hard to find seating. We ended up in the beer garden instead of inside. Recommend if you can get a table.

We weren't keen when we first walked in as it was small and cramped. Then we were told we could go to the other bar of we were eating. This improved our experience. It is fairly dark and cosy, which keeps with the haunted theme. Surprisingly this is another York hotel which claims to be haunted. The bar staff were very helpful and took our order quickly and it didn't take long to arrive. We had giant Yorkshire pud with mash and beef, fish cakes, chicken curry. The portions were generous and the food was good. We are the lot! The cost was reasonable at £24. A good time was had by all

Oh man the food in here was delicious! This was my first experience of a proper English pub and I loved the old interior and the coziness of it. There were funny pictures on the walls talking about leaving swords on the bar and no tinkers allowed, which I found amusing! The food is ordered at the bar and the service was great. I tried asking for irn bru (since i'm Scottish) but they didn't have it, which isn't surprising but thought I would try my luck! For food I ordered southern fried chicken, which came with 2 breast, amazing chunky chips, salad and garlic bread. I must admit the portion size was huge and defeated me. I couldn't eat all the garlic bread but everything was cooked really well and tasted fab. My boyfriend ordered the steak and Stilton pie, which came with chunky chips and vegetables. He absolutely loved it! Next time I'm York will definitely be coming back here again. The tables were comfortable and there was plenty of seating. It's rather dark though, but it creates a nice ambiance in the restaurant.

Said to be the oldest Inn in York (1503) it also the most haunted and has been on TV's Most Haunted show. Great food. I took an American who said the Clam Chowder was better than home. Has a coutyard for eating in and a smoking area. Has rooms to stay in too. The rooms are all styled with medieval furniture and one was a secret room discovered about 7 or 8 years ago. Another room has a resident ghost and one has a 4 poster and a jacuzzi. Not expensive either. Very reasonable prices for the food. Try the giant Yorkshire puddings. Good beer.

A brilliant English pub that is the most haunted building in York. I didn't see any ghosts though, so you probably will be alright...or not! The front area of the pub is for drinks only. We headed to the back area to grab a bite. It is a small, darker pub with a skeleton at the bar to keep you company! Looks like you can reserve tables in advance, which I would recommend if coming after 7pm. We were able to grab a spot in a little nook. Some tables are on a slant while others are barely holding on. It is all a part of the old building and its character. You can read more about the history in your menu, as I can only remember so much history! There is a selection of brews on tap, as well as Strongbow which was my brew of choice. However, they have more of a selection of bottled brews behind the counter. Food wise though, it was stellar. There are vegetarian and vegan meal options listed, as well as markings on all menu items (gluten free, mustard free, vegan etc). I had the Jalfrezi curry full of vegetables with saffron rice, a papadum and side salad. Would definitely recommend to warm up on those wet days. In terms of service, the staff were lovely. Even let us sample a few beers on tap before making our choice.

I love this place, my all time favourite pub! It's a shame I live in Leeds. Fantastic beers at a fantastic price, I would recommend this place to absolutely anyone! The skeletons are a nice touch too;)

Good quality pub grub at a reasonable price in a historical, if slightly grubby pub.

We should get to call all their male bar staff Basil, the female, Sybil and Terry for those workers who don't identify with these genders. I noted that all the male staff wore thin, cheap shirts and trousers so worn out they were shiny. They had a darn good range of beers and darn decent porter mind. At just £15.80 for three pints and a large glass of wine they offered great value for money. That brings 5 stars and allows us to tolerate the staff. The place was packed so the recipe is working for the owner. They are along the riverside with outside cheap seating, right beside the Ouse river and geese strolled around as we sat and chatted in warm sunshine. If they did actual food I didn't notice. As we walked inside to the bar to order our first drinks we encountered staff challenging a chap of much advanced years, dressed like a drab Quentin Crisp, who attempted to use his mobile phone in the pub. I later spotted him outside, drink in one hand and mobile phone against his ear, he was chatting, leaning against the wall trying unsuccessfully to look nonchalant. They describe themselves as a 'digital detox pub'. The chief rule is no mobile phones as they want customers to talk to each other. How novel, quirky and eccentric in the 21st century. No swearing and no music either. Them rules are strictly enforced and you will be evicted if them rules ain't followed promptly. If I'm ever in York again I'll be sure to return for the stout and the insults.

Stick up a cheap sign, put in Ye and an E at the end of old and get em tourists in. Maybe it's just me but it just struck me as stale and frumpy. The other pubs we visited were characterful and the welcome in each stood out (not always for good reasons) and their beer choices were pretty meh. It is dog and family-friendly with wheelchair accessibility, and free WiFi. We had one drink here for four folks - two pints and two glasses of wine £22.95 - and while the food menu looked darn good and reasonably priced there was no atmosphere nor character to persuade us to stay. The young barmaid behind the counter was functional but devoid of easy chat. I'm glad on reflection that we went to the trembling madness next - their booze selection was stunning in comparison and cheaper at £22.10 for a similar round of better quality drinks. I sure wouldn't return here.

My only comment -- but maybe this is just from an American used to farm-to-table food -- is that just like everywhere else in England, I wish there were fewer fried things and more vegetables on the menu (although the tomato side salad was amazing). Waitstaff were very attentive and friendly. Hubby ordered onion rings which were hand battered and delicious. I ordered cod and vegetable risotto which were fine but not remarkable. Broccolini with blue cheese sauce barely had any blue cheese or sauce and was hard, not cooked really much at all. I left half of the serving. We had bread pudding for dessert which was also okay. I didn't find the seasoning of the food to be adequate and maybe salt and pepper on the table would have helped this. By the time our food came out, the waitstaff was busy so I didn't have a ready opportunity to ask for salt. And should I have to ask? This place has a charming interior but i'd suggest drinks here, not dinner.

Still, it's an odd one here... go on the right summer day when they have something on and it can be one of the nicest pubs in York to catch some outside time... they'll set-up a beer tent, get the grill going, and have some live music all in their rather long (if not wide) back garden... I've never regretted afternoons here of this variety and would happily return if not suggest this place myself on a nice summer day. The place is still good on your average night, but the inside (while charming), could use with a bit of a deep clean and update to the restrooms... or the gents at least. The whole place at times seems at contrast to the beer garden days where the pub is easily elevated above your standard experience, which is a bit of a shame... I would love the two experiences to come in line somewhat, but maybe that's just me. Above said, it's still a friendly (and dog friendly) pub so it is what it is. For a few quick pints inside I may choose a few other places in the area (Phoenix Inn & Masons Arms) come to mind, but this is certainly one worth checking out if you're on this side of town and looking for a good old fashioned pub to try.

They had a tale of going here, ordering two pints of a high octane brew and being asked if they were sure, so they confirmed that they were only to get what they wished for and billed £48. They still find it funny and how good the beer was. The beer choices are excellent. The barmaid made us laugh as she asked where we were from and when we told her of our Newry home she said 'Oi don't even know why I asked that Oive no idea where that is I come from' so in fairness we didn't recognise it either but I gathered it's near Newcastle on the Tyne. We four didn't hang around the ground floor instead opting for the upper floor. We opted for modest brews around 4.5 ABV - two pints and two glasses of wine around £22 but some of the high strength beers would have set you back near £30 a pint so with these they sell in measured portions for example a third of a pint. The atmosphere was crackling and we thought it was folks from the York races that had started that morning but were assured it's often crackling. We all had some food to with three main meals and me opting for a breakfast choice, at 8pm on a rainy York night. I had a bacon and a lightly fried egg in a roll served with butter and sauce. It was perfect and was £4.5. All the food was priced for what was on the plate. The place has lots of fascinating objets d'art on the walls and ceilings including a wonderful statute of the Virgin Mary in the gents rest room and bawdy art. No evidence of trembling madness but shrewd selfish business sense. It's a pity it's card only as it makes it harder for serving staff to make tips.
