Miller and Carter is another of Leeds' steak houses. I say another because Christ knows we have enough of them - from Gaucho, to BlackHouse, to RBG, to La Grillade, to... well you get the idea. So what sets Mitchell and Butlers chain steakhouse apart from all the rest? I'm going to go out on a limb and say lettuce.
Let's just all admit, even those that have passed by M&C on the Headrow, that the decor isn't exactly chic, and wouldn't look amiss on either a London Angus Steakhouse (maybe where the look is modelled from) or an up market Wetherspoons. It's perfectly comfy, don't get me wrong, but it's not going to win any prizes for internal refit of the year.
And neither is the food and drink for that matter. I've been a couple of times before to M&C in The Light and always had a decent steak. That is to say completely average run of the mill. Tonight, on a booking of 10, not only did the place not have 3 of their core steaks (including the sirloin), but they also told us that they couldn't guarantee that the level we asked out steaks to be cooked would be adhered to and that rares and medium rares could come out at any point of the cook cycle... Doesn't inspire confidence in a place that claims to be "renowned for expertly cooked West Country steaks". Expertly seems to be an overreach.
So average decor, average food, and honestly, average staff... where does M&C excel? Well, I'm going to say in the area of 'extras'... I've never been in a restaurant before that offers quarters of lettuce with lettuce sauce to go with it; it's a strange thing to me but is definitely a differentiator. And then there is the 'on the side' portion of the menu... Never, and I mean never, has a steakhouse ever offered ribs, lobster and another steak as an 'on the side' to the steak that you've already ordered... Nowhere that I've seen anyway. Prove me wrong I dare you.
What makes this level of mediocrity absolutely okay is the price - it's by far the cheapest meat hut that I've been to in the city, with slightly larger steaks generally coming in slightly cheaper than comparable cuts at the other, what I would personally call, more professional establishments in Leeds.
As a final point, the wine list is horrid in my opinion - having tried most of it now I'm hard pushed to say that I've found a red that is even palatable, which is strange given M&Cs pub background in Mitchell and Butler.
