We came to 63 degrees as a celebration meal after hearing great things about the French cuisine. As we arrived we were greeted by a lovely member of staff who took our coats and seated us at a table by the bar. The decor is lovely, and even though quite a small restaurant, has plenty of seating for couples, small and very large groups. We wanted to order a bottle of champagne and the bar tender came over to discuss what was available and what he thought may suit best which was a nice touch! The restaurant prides itself on the use of seasonal ingredients, and I must admit it has been a couple of months since I have been here, when truffles and chestnuts played a strong part in the menu. SO, to start I had scallops, a favourite of mine, with green leaves and shaved truffle. The scallops were very well cooked, still firm and full of flavour. However, I am not keen on truffles due to their strong aftertaste, but that is not the fault of the chef! Other members within the party had salmon cooked at a low temperature, this was very nice, it was barely poached so it had a much more delicate flavour and texture than you would have in your usual cooked salmon fillets ! There was also foie gras on the menu. This is only to be expected from a French restaurant, but I wasn't keen on seeing them support this particular type of pâté due to the way it is produced. The mains were very good, I opted for the fillet steak. I am very particular when it comes to my steaks, they must be barely cooked, the rarer the better ! I must admit, this may have been one of the best steaks I have ever had. Very rare and juicy, and the flavour was unrivalled. The chestnut mash however, was unrefined and didn't really work for me as it was full of chestnutty lumps. We had ordered sweet potato mash as an extra side and this was lovely. As it was a special occasion, 63 degrees went all out on the desserts with sparklers and all sorts ! We all know that the French make brilliant and delicate desserts, and 63 degrees really delivers here. I would strongly recommend the cocktails here, they are beautiful. They have even let their bartenders have a little more freedom to create their own cocktails and add to the menu as they invent new creations. Although I am not keen on truffles or chestnuts, i will definitely be going back to 63 degrees, it will just be in a different season with other key ingredients !

What a delight this place is! Perhaps the best food I've eaten in Manchester? At least recently anyway. We had the set lunch 3 course meal which was different than advertised on the Internet so don't choose what you're having for lunch because you'll be disheartened. I had the black ink risotto, this was incredible. I could have had this as a main for sure. For mains I had the 63 degrees chicken, again this was faultless. Finally for dessert I had the chocolate fondant which was like heaven in a gooey sauce. Definitely gonna be going back!

After hearing good things about this place for gluten free, I called in and decided to order from their lunch menu. It was around £11 for 2 courses. For my starter, I ordered the Eggs Florentine which is a poached egg on gluten free bread with hollandaise sauce, and sadly it was a giant, bland mess. I didn't really like the sauce, there was too much of it and it got messy really quickly, the dish as a whole was poor, unseasoned and the bread was burnt. The staff didn't seem friendly, service overall seemed slow, they had a sense of arrogance and shock when I sent my food back as well. One thing that shocked me was that the old fashioned decor Cote had only one member of staff working, with the other looking like he was in 'training', running around like a headless chicken with my food before someone else brought it, based on what was to come I'd have wished he would have run off with my food. For my main, I ordered the seabass and again experienced similar problems, the fish its-self was too oily and watery to the point I ended up leaving it, the only thing of decent quality was the chive potatoes which for me isn't right. Sadly, due to issues with the overall feel inside Cote, food quality and service I feel Cote deserves a one-star rating with the main positive being the use of 'Gluten Free' flags in the food to minimise the risk of cross-contamination etc.

In fact, though the décor and layout inside is similar, its actually not a mere bar but a fine French brasserie. Its open as early as 8am for breakfast and throughout the day for lunch, dinner, coffee or drinks. Its pretty pricey but the food is of very high quality, making it worth the money if you fancy treating yourself. There's also often an offer on, but this may require you to print out a voucher so its worth checking the website before you go. The best value is probably the prix fixe menu, which is 1, 2 or 3 courses starting from around £7 at lunchtime and £12.50 for dinner. Personally though, if you are going to Chez Gerard you're better off completely splashing out, and going for the demi poulet from the a la carte menu, half a grilled corn-fed chicken with herbs (they don't spoilt it), pommes frites (chips innit) and a gorgeous garlic butter sauce (wehey!). May oui, may oui, un petit mange tout. Bon. Bon. Bon.

*****BRASSERIE CHEZ GERRARD , ALBERT SQUARE*****…read more We visited Chez Gerrard on Albert Square on Saturday7th August. The three of us were greeted by a pleasant young lady and were shown to our table. We were seated in the front part of the restaurant facing the Town Hall Square. We perused the menu whilst our wine order was taken. The fixed price option was moderately price but didn't particularly like the starters, so we decided to have a mixed platter of ham, cheese, 2 different pates accompained by red onion relish & pickles, from the al a carte. This proved to be a generous portion and we all tucked in and enjoyed this with french bread & butter. The main course we chose were salmon omelette for my wife & the chicken pane with french fries for my son and myself. To finish my wife had the selection of ice creams and my son and myself had the Belgian waffle with chocolate sauce and Vanilla ice cream. The whole occasion was relaxed and the food was delicious. The added attraction was the constant flow of wedding parties using the Town Hall steps for photograph! In all, an excellent meal, moderately priced, served by pleasant, attentive yet inobtusive waiting staff. Would recommend without hesitation.

I visited Mr Cooper's after my dreadful stay at The Midland Hotel, hoping there would be one thing to at least salvage the stay and make my stay better, hoping the food would at least try and make up for an awful nights sleep on a pillow which gave me a headache. I'm never afraid to admit when I'm wrong, and I was wrong to expect the breakfast to be different to the shambles of a hotel in which Mr Cooper's is located in and run by. I was drawn to the breakfast selection which was so small, which for £20 was dreadful (although it does go down to £13 if you book in advance with the hotel reception if you're staying there), it mainly consisted of scrambled eggs, baked beans, tomatoes, black pudding and sausages in terms of a cooked side, there was also some fruit juices and cereal, and not a great deal of fruit which also was a shame. Another thing which puzzled me was the fact they produced a menu and even were willing to charge for extra, such as £3 for Eggs Benedict. £20 for a breakfast is already much more expensive than rivals and any restauraunt with decency who actually know this is daylight robbery, for example, the Hilton Manchester Deansgate has a much more broad selection (and better quality), with extras provided in the price for £13.95 (£17.95). Extras which were free included poached and fried eggs, but I can't understand why they weren't provided anyway. I love eggs and this is generally all I eat at a hotel buffet but I'm sad to say, the eggs here were far from pleasant, the scrambled eggs just were bland, they were unseasoned which is inexcusable and they were also watery. It didn't stop there, the poached eggs I requested also were too vinegary, and the fried eggs just tasted really basic and low quality, however, this food which was inedible was probably only what was to come compared to my omelette. I ordered a ham and cheese omelette, not only was this omelette far too cheesy but it had a horrible taste I couldn't pick up on, meaning I had no choice but to spit it out. The only other extra I ordered was gluten-free bread, which wasn't bread as I expected, it was a hard, seeded roll which wasn't very enjoyable either. The selection of fruit juice was okay, however the orange juice was confusing, they had a long title for the orange juice which stated it had pulp, therefore I can't understand why they are advertising it has pulp in the title, when the other one does too, as it doesn't give you a selection? Having two of one beverage is boring and unneeded anyway when they could have a much better selection of juice - they do have the space and equiptment so they don't have an excuse. The staff at the breakfast service seemed nice enough and that is probably the nicest thing I can say about Mr Cooper's, which provides The Midland's hotel breakfast at a very premium price, for items which are so far from premium, you could find them in Poundland if they sold food, and perhaps the chefs should be working there too until they can learn how to make omelettes without an omelette maker and how to season an egg, sadly like The Midland hotel, I strongly feel Mr Cooper's deserves a single one-star rating.

That's one of the many reasons that Mr. Cooper's is an exceptional venue - they've built a lovely indoor garden area where patrons can enjoy their wonderful food. Mr. Cooper's has lovely ambiance, delicious food, and an attentive, friendly staff. We were greeted warmly when we arrived, and didn't lack for anything throughout the course of our meal. Tip: The cocktail menu here is quite diverse and it contains some excellent choices. I tried the Beehive, and was very impressed! We dined at a nice table in a beautiful spot under a tree. The service we received was excellent, and the food was nothing short of amazing. We started with the ham hock, poached egg and brown sauce. This dish was pure poetry! Next we shared the lamb. It was cooked to a tender pink perfection; wonderfully flavorful as well. We also had several sides. All of them were excellent, but my hands-down favorite was the cauliflower gratin. I very much enjoyed visiting this lovely restaurant, and look forward to returning when next I'm in Manchester.

Rustique - Starter portion of mussels

Menu was great and I definitely recommended their mussels. They have a starter portion and a main portion, tbh it doesn't make a massive difference. We are rather disappointed in the duck leg because the flavor was so uneven - some bites are great, some are too spiced.

We were seated quickly and had a nice table on the main floor. Our drink orders were taken post haste, a bottle of Les Vignerons - Carignan Syrah (£25.15) and a pineapple juice (£2.25), and delivered equally as fast. The male server arrived with an open bottle and started pouring, chug-a-lug-a-lug, no tasting, just sloppily emptying the bottle into my glass. It was tremendously unimpressive. Great start! We both ordered the three-course Set Menu (£25.95). For our entrees, I had the Moules Marinieres à la Creme (mussels in a wine, garlic, herb, and cream sauce) and my wife the Champignons a L'Ail (mushrooms in a garlic cream sauce). My mussels were plentiful for a starter and fresh, but I could barely taste the wine, garlic, or cream. The sauce was watery. My wife's mushrooms were very tasty. On to Les Plats Principaux ... Mine was the Steak Frites with Mushroom Sauce and my wife's the Tarte aux Champignons et Pont L'Eveque (mushroom tart with leeks and Pont L'Eveque cheese). My steak was tiny, four to five ounces max, and half of it was gristle, so I was able to swallow maybe three ounces of it. I told the server that the first bite was very tough, but I never saw her again until I had chewed and spat out half of the steak. The fries were hot and tasty and the mushroom sauce was good, but what a huge disappointment. My spouse enjoyed her tart, but I thought it was rather bland. For dessert, I asked for the Sèlection de Fromages Francais (French cheese board) and my lovely bride the Crème Brûlèe. My cheeses were very good, with three varieties and coming with a bit of lettuce and a few grapes as well as a small baguette. I left just enough wine in the bottle to savor one of my favorite things in life - cheese, bread, and wine. My wife's crème brûlèe was massive, the biggest I had ever seen, so she hit a triple while I had just s single - she hit 1.000 for the night while I hit a mere .333. Our server, Didi, was very sweet and felt terrible because I had not enjoyed my meal, so she offered to discount my meal. However, my journalistic integrity would not allow me to accept remuneration for my meal and we paid full fare - £91+ including tip. A couple of small things spoiled this meal and both were completely avoidable. A little more wine, garlic, and cream, a minuscule cost for the restaurant, would have brought the mussels to a five-star level. As far as the tiny, cheap cut of meat I received, I had no problem with the size had it been tender because bigger is not always better, just ask my friend's wife. Quality control in the kitchen was obviously lacking, hence my rating ... CombatCritic Gives Rustique 4 Bombs Out Of 10 ... More Bombs Are Better!
