Goats cheese salad with beetroot dressing
Clare N.

I love Italian and I always want to enjoy an Italian meal. I was largely underwhelmed by gusto. Whilst the menu was interesting and had some unusual dishes in reality the food was average. I had the goats cheese salad, muscles spaghetti and cheesecake. The spaghetti was the highlight, the cheesecake was bland. Would I go back? Probably not. I might go along if someone else was keen. It seems a bit mean to give 2 stars, probably deserves 2.5 however it didn't stack up to other Italians in the area.

All set for Christmas with lots of sprarkle!

I know its a chain but I can't fault it. The staff are very nice and smiley. The food is just lovely, I had crab pasta last night which was great. Just so you know I can't eat enough crab at the moment so it was just what I fancied. There is something for everyone on the menu. Its quite a family friendly place but still chic enough to make you want to put on your new dress. With two for one cocktails before 7pm its great place to start an evening. The cocktails are good and so is the wine. If you don't finish you pizza or pasta do ask for a doggie bag its good cold too. I was hoping for glam loos but clean and well lit will do.

My trip to Gusto was a bit of a mistake. Me and the boyf had been planning on going out for tapas, but the tapas place was closed. So we kind of wandered round Didsbury looking for somewhere to eat, and happened across Gusto. Now, when I was living in Didsbury, I'd stand at the bust stop next to Gusto every darn day, and yet I never really noticed it. How bizarre. It's lucky that tapas place was closed that day, or we'd never have discovered this lovely place. Nowadays, it seems like everyone's getting in on the act with Mediterranean foodstuffs, and let's face it, pasta's not exactly a revelation. When you think about it, most of us cook and eat 'Italian' most of the time. I know I do, as I have a weird habit of making massive lasagnes about once a week, and freezing huge slabs of the stuff. Obviously I am subconsciously preparing for some kind of nuclear disaster, in the event of which, we will be sustained by lasagnes until help comes. Er, where was I? Oh yeah, Italian food. It's not the most exciting genre, really. But Gusto, well, Gusto's pretty exciting. A small chain based in the North West, Gusto serves quality authentic Italian grub at very reasonable prices. Their pasta dishes are all priced under the £9 mark (apart from lobster linguine, obviously) and you can grab an 8oz sirloin steak for £13.95. The wide and varied pizza menu is priced from £5.95 to £9.95 and satisfies any pizza need, from margarita to peking duck. The wine list has a wine for every palate and pocket, with a range of fruity, heavy, dry and sweet plonks starting at £14 and going up to over £50. They also offer a great cocktail list, and they use the good tequila in their margaritas, always cause for kudos from me! The setting of this restaurant is really nice, from the intimate leather booths to the stand-alone tables, the low lighting and soft music makes it an ideal date venue, though the booths can seat larger parties if you don't mind getting a little cosy... All in all, a lovely place to eat, in a lovely little bit of Manchester. It's worth the occasional journey from the city centre, too.

There are several Gusto locations but it still feels like a great independent restaurant. The food is excellent, we've eaten here many times and never had a bad dish. It's my go to place for a night out with my best friend, a date with my boyfriend and family meals. We celebrated my Mums 60th there last Friday and, as usual, it was perfect. I generally go for the steak as its great here and a good tip is they offer starter portions of the main pasta dishes if you fancy trying one. There was a new dessert menu since I last visited and I tried the new chocolate mouse with espresso cream. I highly recommend this dessert, add an espresso martini and you'll be in heaven!

A great sized restaurant with a buzzing atmosphere. Although it's a chain it feels like an independent restaurant, which I really liked. Tables for 2 are quite close together but we didn't feel too much on our nextdoor neighbours laps! We went for the tiger prawns & the calamari to start - no photo as I got way to excited and dived right in. The calamari was absolutely amazing, to the point where I didn't want to share with the boyfriend (I think he had the same sentiments). For the mains Tom went for the prawn & lobster spaghetti and I went for the flattened rump steak. The steak was cooked to perfection & seasoned amazingly (garlic, chilli, peppercorn & sea salt), however I made the error of requesting the peppercorn sauce which was far too overpowering & sadly didn't compliment very well. The spaghetti looked delicious, with the lobster cooked really well. Of course the only option for dessert had to be the sticky toffee pudding, and it didn't disappoint! Our 2nd order of drinks didn't appear so we had to chase up but the manager sorted it out and offered them on the house for us, which we appreciated! I'd recommend trying out this place on a quiet night - you'll be guaranteed great service & lovely food!

I went here for the first time for a Christmas party and was served a 3 course meal for £35. I had a ham and leek terrine with mustard dressing and spiced beetroot chutney, slow cooked beef daube (minus the fried potato gnocchi) served with a green peppercorn, garlic and red wine sauce and a lemon sorbet. I would have chosen differently; I was limited due to my dietary requirements, but I was not disappointed by these delicious offerings. There was a George Michael tribute act and he was brilliant! I'm almost sure he'd be as good before several glasses of prosecco...

Calamari

This was my first visit and I will admit that I feel a little bit harsh putting three stars; it just really didn't quite meet my expectations. I found the service to be good enough at first then just tailed off a little during the course of the meal - it felt as though they just lost interest (they were around half full). The highlight of the meal was the starter - the calamari seemed very fresh and very well cooked. The main - duck rigatoni - was, however, rather disappointing. The course was tiny with very little actual duck and just didn't fast of a great deal. The steamed spinach side (extra £3.50) was nice but somewhat overpriced for what actually arrived. Finally, rice pudding for desert. I really liked that they had a few out-of-the-ordinary desserts like this but if you order this particular sweet make sure you like cinnamon (I do, but not quite that much). So, I would go again - and given the other reviews I would try the steak or pizza. I did feel that the prices were overall reasonable (starters around £6, mains between £9 and £16 - apart from lobster). It's also worth noting that you could get starter sizes for most of the mains. Good wine selection and also reasonably priced. Sides are rather overpriced and the main courses were just a bit *too* small - although that does mean that three courses are possible.

The bar is very nicely laid out, a large open space with a floating second floor which looks down on the bottom storey. High moulded ceilings and massive display shelving behind the bar showing off their very large selection of wine. I'm a beer drinker so the thought of a wine bar didn't get my palate stirring particularly but what did and is a fantastic aspect of Wine and Wallop is the 13 hand pumps on the bar. There is in fact almost as many beers available on a daily basis as there is wines by the glass available. I did in fact try the wines that others ordered and as there were a few even I would happily drink. I am told they were a very good selection by my wine quaffing friends. It is important to add that there is only a selection of the wines available by glass and these are displayed on a chalkboard above the door. All other wines are by bottle only. I believe they change this list regularly, although I didn't enquire how often this occurs. The beers on tap the night I went in were a selection from Timothy Taylor's (a Didsbury staple) Brightside Brewery and Ilkley. They didn't have all 13 taps on (I think there were 2 absent). The bar doesn't do meals but does have a selection of light snacks, mostly in the range of cheeses, meats, biscuits and breads. All of these are decent quality and the portions are reasonable. I would say the demographic of the bar is on the older side, being in my mid 30's I was definitely in the younger age range there on a Friday night. But that said the bar has a great vibe with no tv, and jazz music playing in the background at a low volume so it's definitely a spot for conversation or quiet contemplation rather than a party venue.

I took my parents here one Saturday afternoon for a little sit down and a hot drink after exploring the local shops. My Dad and I ordered a latte each and my Mum ordered a pot of peppermint tea. Both lattes came out at the perfect temperature and with a good amount of frothy milk on the top. Sadly, the pot of tea my Mum had ordered was a used pot of tea and was therefore half full and stone cold. It seems that one waitress had cleaned off another table and placed the finished with tea pot next to the freshly brewed one, so the wrong one was accidentally bought over. The staff were so apologetic and immediately bought over the actual freshly made pot of tea as soon as we noticed. After that minor mishap, everything ran smoothly and everything tasted just right. I really enjoyed the simplistic style with a few pieces of quirky artwork dotted on the walls. I'd say there's a kind of nautical theme running throughout the café, as there's ropes hanging from the ceiling and a few other seaside/fishing type items dotted around. All very cute and trendy. I'd recommend Rustik to anyone in the area, it's the perfect place (not at all like a standard high street coffee shop) to stop and have a quick drink. Also, the tables are spaced out, so you can enjoy a nice chat or catch up with friends or family without feeling like you're being listened in on.

The tables and chairs in M&A are a mismatch of odds and bods but this combined with the weird and wonderful wall art and trendy bar give the place so much character. After a few cheeky drinks down Burton Road my friend and I decided that our bellies needed food so we jumped in here in hope of finding a table. We were luckily enough (especially considering it was a Friday night) to find a table in the small back room. Until this night I'd only ever popped in here for drinks so I was happy to see a varied menu. I think they were possibly a little under staffed as getting served at the bar took an age but I can't deny that the food and drink were both perfect. I opted for a mushroom and pesto stone baked pizza, which had a crisp base and a perfectly crunchy crust. The sauce was very flavoursome and the toppings plentiful. I enjoyed every mouthful. To drink I had not one, but two Mai Thai cocktails (afterall it was Friday), which were both mixed to perfection, with a handful of ice, the sweetness of pineapple juice and the warmth of plenty of rum. I would recommend this little bar to anyone and everyone who is visiting the area.

On Mondays they do burger and a beer for £10 - that's gets you your choice of burger, fries, slaw and a choice of beer from the Camden Brewery selection. I had the chicken and bacon burger with a pale ale, both lovely! The coffee I had before my food was average but then again they aren't claiming to be the next Starbucks. On 10th April, a new snazzy place has taken over the posh Gin Club, which I so dearly loved! Bar 43 is what its called, (ring a bell to Bar 38 near the AMC Cinemas?) and it is not a bad looker to be honest! The place is big enough, not huge. It is dimlit and has walls of velvet, yes, imagine someone throwing up or spilling drinks, its all going to stay there for a very long long time! Ok, lets not think about that! The bar is equipped with ok-ish bar tenders who think they're amazing. Well, they did put efforts into putting a fire-bottle show and then landed up spraying some drinks on me and a friend who happened to walk in here, looking for the Gin Club on a saturday night. The place inside has little stools and little round tables all with candles. It could be the new dressy place Fallowfield would witness! The drinks are fairly priced. £5.20 for regualr cocktails and £2.50 for a 175ml glass of wine and the shots are priced at just £2, if it stays this way, it wouldn't be a bad place to dress up and come to! The live music of the Gin Club was definitely a plus point that this place is going to be missing, gahh, why did it have to go! It had a different feel to it all together! Right from the name to the place, it was something different! Now its been replaced by a commercial posh-bar thing. Oh well, maybe in time, acceptance will be recieved to bar 43! Till then, Gin Club, you shall be deeply missed!

It categorically failed on that count. Aesthetically very little has changed here - there is some new twirly, baroque-patterned fabric wallpaper; three flatscreen TVs bolted to the wall; the bar has some mirrors behind it now but essentially it is the same place. Except that it really isn't. They killed the vibe, they just killed it man. Instead of laid back jazz, funk and hip-hop (a sample Gin Club playlist might have included Isaac Hayes, RJD2 and Peggy Lee) they now play (very loud) chart dance and r'n'b, which although not bad in itself does mean there is yet another bar in Fallowfield that plays the same music. Gone too is the live music, a really great loss. The cocktail menu is essentially the same but everything seems to have gone up by £1, the quality though leaves much to be desired (although most of this owes to the rookie bar staff). On the plus side beer and cider prices have remained pretty much static at around, or under, £3 a pint and a double and mixer costs around the same price. This isn't enough to pull it back from the brink though - everything that made Gin Club special and interesting has gone and been replaced by what is effectively a serial number.

It's actually a really nice place - the interior is lovely and location spot on. It often gets scrutinised for being a bit pretentious with the crowd it attracts, but I have to say I prefer the crowd of didsbury locals - this place is always filled with a nice crowd and attracts no trouble. You can sit outside under the heated area, inside at the main bar, or in the restaurant/dining bit. Each area is always busy, with a bustling atmosphere and traditional decor. I ordered the Butternut Squash Risotto for my dinner which was the wrong choice - I should have gone for the burgers which a lot of my friends went for, and they looked amazing. The burgers came with a nice looking ciabatta bun, and were fully stacked with meat, salad and cheese. My risotto was very standard., The butternut squash was a little bit hard, and I didn't really feel full or satisfied after it. At least I had buckets of sweet potato fries to pick at from everyone elses order afterwards, which were home cooked and delicious! Quite a pricey place to come for lunch and a drink if you expect it to be a typical 'pub/bar' type place. But it is west didsbury after all. When we arrived we sat at our table for about 10minutes expecting some kind of table service (there must have been at least 5 staff members on) but soon realised this was not the case and went to the bar. The guy who served us was lovely, but when asking for a drinks menu couldn't find one, when asking for a food menu- couldn't find one... When we ordered our food my friend asked if she could have white bread with her scrambled eggs- the waitress had no idea. She went to find out... And never came back. The food was all fine, nothing negative to say at all. I ate all my eggy-pegs but it was also nothing special and of all the places that do food in Didsbury this is certainly not the best. I've said it before, and I'll say it again. The staff need to be more equipped in this place as they never seem to know what they're doing and there always seems to be something that they just don't know the answer to. There was a busy queue for food and the bar, in fact the busiest we saw all night, which confirms that it is currently the 'go to' venue at the moment in this area. Food is served downstairs. I do like it when they separate the service like this because it doesn't overwhelm the space with people eating and staff moving between tables serving food, though there was a strong seafood smell wafting up, not unpleasant and I'm sure if your a fan it would delight your senses. A quick look at the menu confirm a large portion of seasonal fish on it. I do agree with previous reviews that the staff seem ill at ease, perhaps because it was so busy but they don't seem to be comfortable in their roles and a bit distant when serving.
