If you're looking for an independent and quirky bar in didsbury that serves a huge range of ales,…read morecocktails and a good selection of food and that always has a friendly atmosphere then look no further. The tables and chairs in M&A are a mismatch of odds and bods but this combined with the weird and wonderful wall art and trendy bar give the place so much character. After a few cheeky drinks down Burton Road my friend and I decided that our bellies needed food so we jumped in here in hope of finding a table. We were luckily enough (especially considering it was a Friday night) to find a table in the small back room. Until this night I'd only ever popped in here for drinks so I was happy to see a varied menu. I think they were possibly a little under staffed as getting served at the bar took an age but I can't deny that the food and drink were both perfect. I opted for a mushroom and pesto stone baked pizza, which had a crisp base and a perfectly crunchy crust. The sauce was very flavoursome and the toppings plentiful. I enjoyed every mouthful. To drink I had not one, but two Mai Thai cocktails (afterall it was Friday), which were both mixed to perfection, with a handful of ice, the sweetness of pineapple juice and the warmth of plenty of rum. I would recommend this little bar to anyone and everyone who is visiting the area.

I initially popped in in search of coffee and wifi to finish off some last bits and bobs for the day before heading over for the #worldofwine event but looking at the menu and being here on a Monday I decided I could make room for an early dinner! On Mondays they do burger and a beer for £10 - that's gets you your choice of burger, fries, slaw and a choice of beer from the Camden Brewery selection. I had the chicken and bacon burger with a pale ale, both lovely! The coffee I had before my food was average but then again they aren't claiming to be the next Starbucks. The chap working at the time I was in was extremely helpful and friendly as well! Most likely will be back on my next didders trip!

Another place which does great beer on Burton Road! Huzzah!…read more I've been to Volta a couple of times now, once to check it out and have a drink, and once for a meal with the in-laws. They have a wide range of ales - three on cask (I believe) and a number of keg offerings, from continental lager to lovely hoppy pales. The decor is relaxed, vintage and classic, reminding me of a small underground continental bar. Their food menu is wonderful, lots of various nibbles/'small plates' and cheese boards to share. A special mention has to go to their pork belly, which was absolutely divine, and perfect to share so it doesn't become too overwhelming. The star of the show for me, though, was the hanger steak, which I had cooked rare. Insanely flavoursome and tender, I'm going to go out on a limb and say that this was the best steak I've tried so far. My partner was a bit less impressed with his dexter steak, and both he and the father-in-law said that they wanted to come back again so they could get the hanger steak themselves. The staff are attentive, personable, and very knowledgeable about what they're serving. There's no reason for me not to give it full marks, so well done Volta! I think it's a marvellous addition to Burton Road, and judging by how busy it seems to be all the time, so do my neighbours.

I was therefore keen to go back but this time the changed menu wasn't nearly so packed with choices and we struggled a bit to select enough between the two of us. The padron peppers were nice, nice to see those outside Madrid. The chorizo was just fried chorizo. The monkfish goujons were quite good but the prawns my friend disliked and distrusted because of their fishy smell - I also didn't think they were that great. We loved the halloumi and fig though, and sweet potato fries were good although in a foodie place like this I would have expected maybe a more interesting dip. The lamb shawarma came with a super spicy harissa - always pleasing when heat is not compromised, but ultimately I think I could get as good in any Middle Eastern restaurant. It was a very sunny evening and the windows were wide open which would have been great to sit beside had it not been for the terrace full of people smoking right beside the window - unfortunately that gives me a headache after a while so I would advise to sit at the rear of the restaurant if it's a warm day if you have the same problem. Which is too bad as it effectively deprives you of the best window/terrace seats in favour of people who don't even have working taste buds. Cocktails I thought were lacklustre and expensive relative to the quality/price ratio of NQ offerings. We had a nice bottle of prosecco. I'd go back if the menu changes back to something I find more appealing, otherwise I wouldn't pay that much again for a fairly average dinner.

I took my parents here one Saturday afternoon for a little sit down and a hot drink after exploring the local shops. My Dad and I ordered a latte each and my Mum ordered a pot of peppermint tea. Both lattes came out at the perfect temperature and with a good amount of frothy milk on the top. Sadly, the pot of tea my Mum had ordered was a used pot of tea and was therefore half full and stone cold. It seems that one waitress had cleaned off another table and placed the finished with tea pot next to the freshly brewed one, so the wrong one was accidentally bought over. The staff were so apologetic and immediately bought over the actual freshly made pot of tea as soon as we noticed. After that minor mishap, everything ran smoothly and everything tasted just right. I really enjoyed the simplistic style with a few pieces of quirky artwork dotted on the walls. I'd say there's a kind of nautical theme running throughout the café, as there's ropes hanging from the ceiling and a few other seaside/fishing type items dotted around. All very cute and trendy. I'd recommend Rustik to anyone in the area, it's the perfect place (not at all like a standard high street coffee shop) to stop and have a quick drink. Also, the tables are spaced out, so you can enjoy a nice chat or catch up with friends or family without feeling like you're being listened in on.

I have never eaten here, and if I'm completely honest, don't really have any desire to, because I do see this place as a sophisticated, beautiful 'bar', with sophisticated, beautiful 'beverages'. I have however, heard good things about the Sunday roast in particular if that's what you're after. Now onto the best bit, the cocktails. The staff are well trained here, and definitely know what they're doing in terms of making a good drink. The menu has been designed to cater for the mass market, but not in the "lets just stick a load of sugar syrup" way that most places do. I've sampled a fair few off their menu, my favourite being the "hello sailor" which comprises of sailor jerry rum, cinnamon, apple juice (and something else that my rum-fuelled brain can't remember). Absolutely delicious. It's a great little place, with knowledgeable and friendly staff, a soft warm ambience, and great drinks. I'm donning the flat shoes in future to make the short walk to greet my rum-flavoured seaman. Hello sailor.

The place is lovely inside and really a step up from its surroundings. Drinks are fun and imaginative, and it's not terribly expensive. The place can get packed pretty quickly as it's tiny and the area is obviously packed with students stalking alcohol like it's key to their surviving the next 10 minutes -- which, granted, for many it probably is.

It's one of those 'meh' places, perhaps not 'meh' enough to warrant a harsh two stars as it has a superb outside balcony feature for those sun-drenched afternoons and Smoky Joes. Plus the drinks are cheap. Of course they are, it's a Baa Bar. Winner. You'll get the odd club night here but it seems to have entered the collective consciousness as a venue for 'pre-drink drinks'. And hey, they have a place. I bet if we put together a list of pre-drinks drinks places we'd end up with something colossal. The music's not exactly my cup of tea with all that jungle, drum n' bass and underground dance (I'm making myself sound old, I must stop) but if that floats your boat then this place will too. A worthy Fallowfield contender.
