I suppose Baa Bar's extensive into student rich Fallowfield was inevitable- students do love their shooters. What wasn't expected however is how much more subtle and tasteful this one was going to be- it is definitely my favourite of the Manchester trio. I fully expected the marriage between the garish and lairy Baa Bar and Europe's biggest student population to be unhappy one, full of domestic abuse and adultery- and I think I can be forgiven. And whilst it isn't exactly mature it certainly is much more refined, and designed with a respectful nod to retro designers such as Verner Panton and Eero Aarnio. The atmosphere is chilled and cool, if it wasn't called Baa Bar I wouldn't have made the link. I think the people behind the small but successful chain have this time took much more influence from one of their other Liverpool ventures Tabac, which in my eyes is the best cafe in the city, with a kitsch and kooky style of it's own. Oh little Tabac, how I miss thee!

I love baa bar, nothing better when you are short on funds than going there for cheap deinks cocktails and dancing to good music.

So...I would not have picked this place as my first choice as a spot to work off a hangover. It had too many clean lines. I was wanting something old, dark, traditional, dark, quiet-ish and dark. So it was dark but in no way traditional. None-the-less there was indeed a Bloody Mary Special so all went well. It was a special that included an English breakfast. Between the Bloody Mary the hearty eggs, sausage, bacon, hash browns and so on...I left in far better shape than I arrived. That was the extend of my experience- which seems a shame as there is a lot to do here (billiards, terrace- karaoke - they told us). I don't know that I would say this will become me Sunday recovery go-to place, but I will likely return and check it out under different circumstances.

They launched three new variants - studio 54, all cocktails popularised in the 70's, Mexican/tiki themed cocktails and my personal favourite Prohibition. I had cocktails st Blackdog quite a few times and they never disappoint and these be additions to menu are very welcome in my opinion. We had some rather fantastic Manhattens, Sazeracs, and a New York sour -the standout drink for me. A traditional whisky sour topped with red wine, sounds crazy but it's fantastic. Next time I'm looking for somewhere to drink cocktails and chat to some very knowledgeable mixologists I'll be popping along here.

We had the BBQ Jackfruit dog, which was a vegan sausage topped with BBQ pulled jackfruit, vegan chipotle mayo, and jalapeno's. It was absolutely delicious! The sausage was not dry, as sometimes happens with vegan sausages, and the combinations of flavors was great. We also got the vegan Mac n Cheese; it was listed under bigs, but the portion size was disappointingly very small. It also tasted a bit grainy, not the best potato cheese I've had. They are allergen friendly, but make sure you make all your allergens known! The mac n cheese does have coconut milk in it. They also have Ice Shack Vegan ice creams, which is a bonus!

They have great club nights and a truly eclectic range of gigs from emerging punk-funk and disco groups like Yacht and The XX to established underground pop bands like Broadcast. Even better, most of the gigs take place in an intimate room with high ceilings, cleverly stacked seating and standing room for about 300 people. I went to see Detroit protest singer Rodriguez on Monday evening and had a fantastic night. The atmosphere was great, the acoustics were fab and the drinks were mighty fine. Being a long-term country and Americana gal, I also fell in love with the Good Dolly and Bad Dolly wallpaper in the ladies toilets! The only disadvantage is, I'm still a little hungover!

I had never been to an Ice Bar before so when I heard that this pop up Ice Bar, ran by Coors Light,…read morewas coming to Spinningfields I decided it was probably worth a try. I had to sign up online and book an hour slot - being so popular most evenings were sold out so I opted for a Wednesday afternoon as I had the day off work for Birthday celebrations. After registering online you have to enter your debit card details and essentially set up a tab online. The way it works is that you set a maximum spend to spend at the ice bar, this is linked with a wristband you're given, and your card is debited with the cost of the drinks you have on the day. Sounded odd at first, but when I went on Wednesday it works quite well. No cash needed. The promo staff were friendly and when we turned up we were ushered into a little hut for our wristbands - mine was, as mentioned online, linked to my debit card. We then entered the 'pre ice bar' which was modelled on only what I can imagine to be a ski resort hut. We ordered a Coors Light, standard. And a raspberry Coors Light cocktail. It came to £9 for both and after a quick scan of my wristband, done! Easy peasy. Out of the hour slot we booked, you actually spend 30 minutes of it in this bar, not in the ice bar. Not sure if that's a good thing or not - as most will have booked for the actual ice bar. After they handed out some bright silver poncho type coats to keep you warm, you're then guided into the ice bar which is COLD! -5oC to be precise. The inside is pretty impressive for s first timer - although it was extremely packed in there and a bit too loud. The drinks selection is limited - 4 or 5 drinks to choose from so most were just drinking bottled Coors Light. It was okay for an hour on an afternoon, but I wouldn't go really out of my way to visit.

Not all books should be judged by their covers though, and this is especially true for Mint Lounge. You'll often find a queue outside Mint Lounge on the weekends, revellers eagerly anticipating a night of soul, funk, jazz and electric disco. There's a couple of bar rooms and a main dance floor which gives off an underground vibe. They also have live bands playing here and the entry prices are reasonable - from £4-7 depending on the night and how early you arrive. Expect a mix of the glamorous, fun loving, music loving cool kids in this place. Those who I seem to be able to always knock back a bit of random conversation with. The two club nights are Clique on a Friday and Funkademia on a Saturday both come recommended. Clique has been described as "Manchester's 21st Century disotheque playing alternative dance, electropop and digital disco" and has been voted Manchester's best club night many a times by the MEN. Funkademia, as you can probably guess, is more about the soul, funk and grooves. Mint Lounge has been accredited by Mix Mag as one of the COUNTRY's top ten clubs (2007). Not even just in Manchester. I'm not sure about that, for purely the bathroom situation. I'm just not a fan of checking out my shine in front of the bloke I had my eye on, or coming out of a loo along with a trail of toilet paper to find a mass of men and women trying not to smirk at me. It's bad enough in the girl's only toilets. I quickly get over this slight glitch and frequent the place more often than any other of Manchester's offerings I must admit. Watch out for special nights and guest djs, Hot Chip recently made an appearance, was tres bon to say the least.

Angela makes a good point about the security, as this part of Manchester seems to cast the net wide when it goes in search of bouncers, and ends up bring up all the scum from the bottom. These guys were welcoming, and even let me in for free, while there was supposed to be a couple of pounds charge. Having said that, I think its usually free anyway, unless they have something special on. It is relatively cheap, especially for Deansgate, so that's another thing its got over its local rivals. However, there were some downsides to my visit. There was a large 18th birthday party going on, which was loud and dominant. A number of under 18 year olds were present and they had a wristband system in operation to mark out the ones eligible to purchase alcohol. Irritating. Music also was pretty poor, apart from a few Michael Jackson choonz, for whom I have a soft spot. They did take a number of our requests though so I'll have to say fair play there. The décor is done out in that formulaic trendy, shoes-only, style bar, which is pretty boring and unwelcoming. Basically if you absolutely have to hang out on Deansgate Locks, then you should probably go for the lesser of a bunch of evils and have one at House 9, but if you can tear yourself away, just go onto Deansgate itself and go somewhere actually nice.

The rooms themselves have that under the arches feel, which gives the place an intimate feel and reminds me a little of The Cross in London. For this reason it appeals to an older crowd who want something a little more special. The staff and the management are extremely curtious and look like they're having fun. There are no intimidating security lurking at every corner which you often find in the pretentious clubs in this area (or at least I wasn't aware of them) and the vibe is very relaxed. The bar stocks the regular drinks and aren't over-priced. Love it.
