Went here for a Cocktail Masterclass ran by LargeManchester. Good night out and learned how to make a couple a cocktails. What a place. Hula is my new favourite venue in our great city. Visiting for a leaving do, I didn't really know what to expect, but I left very impressed - and fairly tipsy. We were there quite early due to starting early, so had the place almost to ourselves for a while, but it does get busy and there is a fair wait at the bar (though this is forgiven as soon as they set fire to your drink). I started with a Zombie, which was a little too easy to drink, and moved onto the Midnight Rainbow. A combination of passionfruit, lemon and a tonne of ice topped with blackberry, this is best drank through the sherbet straws you're provided. Don't be fooled into thinking you can eat them easily - the ice basically freezes them - but drinking through them takes the drink to another level! The music was very reminiscent of Gold Teeth, making me pine for my student days while dropping it like it's hot. This music can attract some interesting characters, with very interesting dance moves, but everyone's just trying to have a good time. read more

We ended up here last night after a few too many cocktails at Turtle Bay around the corner. If you like R&B and Reggae you'll enjoy Tuesday evenings here. It was pretty empty but that didn't stop the punters from throwing some very questionable shapes around on the dance floor. I loved it! There's a sign behind the bar that reads 'No Ties No Tories'.. my kind of place!! oh, and No Bell ends. Fair play. We got a gigantic, never ending flaming cocktail in a bucket to share between two and I must admit I felt a bit sick after. It wasn't a cocktail as such, more so a mixer that was very sweet and sickly. BUT we drank it all anyway. The cocktails here are on par with those at the black dog ballroom, not works of art by any means but ok. I felt £16 was too much for what we got. We got there at 9.25pm and just missed the 2 for 1 happy hour which finishes at 9pm.. darn it! I will be back on a weekend for a boogie. The bar man was very friendly and we enjoyed a joke or two, always a good thing. P.S. They don't serve wine. Just mixers and cocktails. read more

A fresh one for us here - Hula has just opened up on Stevenson Square and is set to have an official launch full of celebs. Styled a Tiki Bar and billed to be Manchester's Mahiki, our hopes were high... ... And pretty much dashed. I was expecting a really tropical yet sophisticated interior, like Mahiki, but all we got really were pillars painted black/ patterned and a fish tank. Oh, and spiky fish shaped lamp shades. The bar area was a bit more swanky but the whole place just wasn't big enough to pull it off. The ladies toilets were nice enough though. Free to get in but it was almost empty when we arrived at about midnight on a Friday, never a good sign. Playing it safe with spirits and wine, the prices at £3.50 which is pretty much standard. A friend tried a cocktail, their creamy Planet of the Apes for £6.50, which didn't exactly go down a treat but perhaps he should have chosen more carefully. The music was ok, but we were all chatting so much we barely noticed it; and there was absolutely no question of dancing. We moved on to do that. The staff were fairly friendly, they actually just seemed a bit bored. They weren't exactly run off their feet. Maybe I'll go back when more people have heard of it (cue celeb launch) but I would never stay in here for long. Not enough tropical flair and absolutely no Hula. read more

Hula is worth a visit on Tuesday night when their unusual cocktails are half price. There is something rather comforting about walking into a tropical paradise to escape the season's blustery winds and rain. They've done well with the retro beach-hut decor in here, bamboo wallpaper, hanging fish and flower garlands add to the kitsch effect. However, it still feels that something is missing with the overall ambiance, and it takes a while to get into the groove when you're dressed in your work best. You can't beat the two for one offer for the cocktails though. Hula in the Northern Quarter was designed by Bernard Carroll who also created the well known footballers wife's bar Panacea and Walrus (also in the Northern Quarter) The concept is very obvious and given the difficult theme usually reserved for nights like end of year party's for students, it is incredibly tastefully done - and so much fun!! bamboo and palm tree features, wooden Tiki carvings, island-inspired murals, puffer-fish lights and a tropical fish tank set the Tiki-beach scene.... I love it!! Considering they stock a rum collection that rivals a Jamaican cab firm in Deptford, I would make you first cocktail a Daiquiri or suchlike. The people here are totally fun, but the atmosphere is a bit *meh*. If I were reviewing the music alone, it'd be a 1 star review based off my experience. It seemed whatever DJ they had on for the night would change the songs just as soon as the beat would really get started...there were minutes at a time where we were wanting to dance, but there just wasn't anything to really dance to. I'm not much a dancer to begin with so I at first thought it was just me, but when I brought it up with the rest of our group, they agreed - the music was just bad. One of the group has been several times before, and she swore it's not usually so bad, so it could just be that they had bad music that night, but it certainly made my first experience poor. Not wanting to end this review on such a poor note, I'll again highlight how fun and happy the bar staff seem. They seem like they're just totally having a blast all night long, even when they're running around cleaning stuff up or carrying ice from one place to the next. I'd like to give this place another try and hopefully have a better time. read more

Yes, it is by itself bit out the way, in the northern quarter... But just look at it!!!!!!!! It's understated and I just love it. I love the neon sign out side, I love the fact you have to go down a set of steep stairs, with the noise from the bar approaching you like a euphoric band. I love the huge fish tank that greets you at the bottom of the stairs. I love the lighting and last but no least I love the crowd. Urbanites rejoice, anyone who lives in the city centre is likely to be found here at some stage, so be prepared to bump into some old mates. I love that random feeling as I'm sure we all do..... A great atmosphere is linked with the fantastic decorum. Escapismtastic especially parked alongside the dim lighting and sparkling cocktail barrels create a profound ambiance to the place. This place is a jolly old haunt to meet friends share stories and be merry safe in the knowledge that a great night out is just around the corner. Hula is a rum bar & their rum cocktail is quite strong. On a weekend early evening it was just a normal bar. After midnight it became a night club where you can dance. After 2pm，where other bars in northern quarter are closed, people would start to queue up outside Hula. You pay 3 pounds entrance fee to get in. At this point most people in there are drunk & you would see people kissing. A good night guaranteed if that's the kind of scene you are looking for. read more

Fire! Hula is a good place to end your night. It is rather busy on a Friday and Saturday night, but that adds to the fun. The staff are having a good time, the cocktails are a nice treat and the music makes me shake it. Ah, that paradoxical twist when cool begets arrogance which begets uncool. As is the sad fate of so many Northern Quarter bars, either the proprietors or the staff, or both, seem to have forgotten one crucial aspect of their manifesto: hospitality. It's never nice to walk into a bar and order drinks and be treated like an inconvenience, and it's even worse when you have to ask if you can be served because the two bartenders are so consumed with their conversation about bestiality and making love to sofas. This is not made up. Hula is like a vacuum for smiles, warmth and friendliness. Unless you're one of the privileged Northern Quarter few who seem to exist in a secret society you are unlikely to be treated like a precious paying customer, more like an annoying little sibling bothering their big sibling to reach them down a biscuit from the cupboard. Shame because the cocktails are lush and, despite their frugality with courtesy, the bartenders are actually generous with their measures drowning your tastebuds and braincells in lovely rummy flavours. Oh and the fish tank is cool. read more

Now for the negative.. ...the bar staff here are incredibly arrogant not serving waiting customers on a busy Saturday night because they are too busy drinking and joking around with each other I even heard a man ask to be served as we had all been waiting a Long time and got told to 'f**k off to another bar if you want to get served' It was terrible over 40 minutes to get a drink when it should have only taken 15 with the amount of bar staff on. second trip here we thought we would give it another try on a Friday with a group of work friends unfortunatly we could not get in due to a bouncer telling one of our bosses he couldn't come in because its not your type of place you're old... Love the music and cocktails here and what makes it better is that it's right next to my flat! :) If you want to get a Hawaiian feel and a fan of bands like Dire Straits or Red Hot Chilly peppers you should never give it a miss! The cocktails are great with really cool bar staff showing off their skills and they definitely come up with some really fancy tropical cocktails! I personally love their Watermelon Daiquiri and Berry Mojito. This place is usually rammed on weekends so it's best to go by 11 pm if you don't want to wait outside in the long queue. It is not one of those pretentious places like most other Northern Quarter bars hence you don't need to wear super high heels and ultra short skirts if you're not in a mood for it! read more

Hula is always a fun place to visit after a few drinks and if you like your cocktails fruity and on fire then you should definitely give this place a go. Called in again this weekend with a few friends and by the time we got here I would describe our condition as merry. It seemed like a good idea to have a few zombies, a sharer cocktail and enjoy the music, which we did. It is a really small place but it has a lively atmosphere and good bar staff. Another great tiki themed bar in the Northern Quarter, hidden down some stairs in a corner of Stevenson Square- Tropical Fishtank, bamboo, tiki's galore and definately the best selection of fine rum in Manchester. Bar staff very knowledgeable of cocktails. They have happy hour from 5pm-7pm during the week, and as the cocktails are £6+ this is the best time to go, dj every evening, It was Martin the Mod when I went in. I have big love for Hula. Big, big love. Ever since my Dad introduced me to it one night after work, I've fallen pretty hard. The paradise hour makes a perfect post-work drink with friends, as for just over a tenner you can get quite merry! My favourite cocktail is the Strawberry Diaquiri, but I warn you- pace them. The thing I love is that it feels like being on holiday- the staff nonchalantly our the measures in Hawaiian shirts, the deckchairs and the fish tank... it's all too much for me to handle! I want to stay there! One thing I love is the little quirky things, like bringing in your own iPod playlist to share. How lovely. And the wallpaper which looks like a Funky Forest (knock off Jumping Jacks) makes me feel all warm and cosy inside. If you're on a night out, order the Volcano cocktail between 2-3 people- it will definitely set you up for the night and who doesn't want to drink alcohol from a faux-mountain? The only put down is that it's quite small, so weekends are mental, and the drinks are a bit expensive. Apart from that, perfect night out. Fun, silly and lively. read more

Hula is tonnes of fun. The bar staff are lovely and they make a mean cocktail. Colourful shirts abound, there's a giant fishtank at the bottom of the stairs and the lights are pufferfish (the 5th star was for the pufferfish, I love them). With cocktails such as 'Big Kahuna', 'Tiger Lily' and 'Koopa Beach' you could almost be convinced that you're sitting at a bar in Polynesia. Except you're in a basement in Manchester. Check the website for special offers as there are a lot of them! Apparently they have 100 types of rum too. Who knew there were so many! read more

Oh, the expectations I had for Hula. If only the website hadn't led me astray, I might not have been quite so disappointed. I think the photographer and his wide-angle lens might well work for the estate agents that flog the shoebox apartments at Castlegate, too. The bar is tiny, even by Northen Quarter standards, and to add insult to injury when we arrived at 8:30 all the tables were "reserved" by people who didn't appear to ever arrive. I enjoyed my cocktail - a "Planet of the Apes" - but could have done without almost losing my eyebrows to a Volcano Bowl being prepared at the bar. I'm quietly confident that you can get a cocktail of the same quality for a better price at dozens of other Manchester bars, though perhaps not with the ridiculous names and "showmanship" behind the bar. If you can call it that. Whilst on the subject of price, and to mention that dastardly website again, they might want to consider revising the drinks menu online to reflect the change in prices. I'd heard about a new Hawaiian twist, a new addition to Manchester's trendy Northern Quarter, an investment that would excite the existing clientele's choice of drinking venues. But I was yet to envision where this would be suitably placed. When faced with the question "where to next?" one bank holiday evening, the "cool rum bar" beckoned us. Cool, a word overly used, not painting any particular picture. Rum bar, a hardcore male watering hole? Greeted by a friendly doorman and an aquarium of real life sea life as I descended downstairs to the Hula Tiki Lounge, the warmth of Hawaii overwhelmed me, or perhaps it was the generous dose of heating cranked up to combat the effects of the wintery weather. Who would have thought Honolulu could be lurking underground on this bus convene of Stevenson Square? This intimate cocktail bar, boasts over 100 finest imported rums to line the range of exotic fruity cocktails. I went for the "Hawaiian cosmo," a Tigerlily (£6). It did the trick in keep me wanting more. On the other end of the spectrum a spend of £12 will get you the "Hula Old fashioned" containing the smoothest Venezuelan rum. There's a lot on the menu which makes the indecisive adventurous. "Island Hopper" or "Shark's tooth," strawberries, guava or Tahitian apple? Tough choice. The intimate seating allowing groups to gather around clutching their fancy mixes vibrating the aura of vacation and relaxation, right on that beach. The sharing culture was implanted with group mixes including a "Volcano bowl" (£16) for two or a powder keg (£55) for the gang, a 3 litre special containing "Hula's secret potion." If cocktails seem too wishy washy then Hula offers wines and beers; the menu even stating you can ask for a special seasonal wine list. This transatlantic import, from the palm trees on the wallpaper, the Tiki inspired artefacts down to the main event array of authentic beverages, does not disappoint. Not for the lighthearted however. If you plan to give the lounge a go, then prepare to splash out. read more

Not the kind of place I would normally head into but we had a fantastic time here! We stopped in for cocktails en route to the Frog and Bucket comedy club. It was very early so we were the only people in there to begin with. The bar staff were very friendly and polite. They advised us that with the number of cocktails we were ordering, if we spent £10 on a membership card we would get 2 for 1 and save about £18 per round which we did! We had a variety of the cocktails from the menu, all were delicious, made with good quality spirits and decorated with huge amounts of fruit! Definitely somewhere I would visit again if I find myself in Manchester! read more

Could be a great bar, but my experience was very unpleasant because the staff (including the manager) were very rude and obnoxious. I was apparently standing at a section of the bar that isn't allowed to be stood near (God forbid) and instead of asking me to move the barman threw a bag of ice at me whilst my back was turned. When I complained to the manager he asked, "Did it hurt? It's not the worst thing in the world is it? I'm just very busy." I find it hard to believe that if I had thrown something at a member of staff the incidence would have been handled in the same way. Seemed to me there was an atmosphere of "Woe is me, I was a loser at school and now I have learnt to catch a pineapple between my arse cheeks I am finally cool!" You are not I'm afraid, you're an idiot. read more

Seemed like a nice bar- good decor and good drink selection. Cocktails were nice and well priced. Unfortunately our evening was spoiled when an idiot at the bar deliberately poured his drink over a female member of our group. Obviously he was a friend of the bar man because when we went to complain the atmosphere turned rather nasty. Overpriced, weak cocktails with bar staff that are rude and obnoxious! Thinking its perfectly ok to insult customers that are paying their extortionate prices is not my idea of a good night out. Avoid! There are lots of great bars near by so would definitely visit those instead :-) read more

Small venue but always a great, packed atmosphere. Yes, the staff aren't close to friendly but the drinks are good and the tunes are EXCELLENT! Salt'n'pepa 'Push It'? YES NOW!!! Tis a fun, chilled place where people come to dance and have fun, security could lighten up a little and the bar staff could smile occasionally, but they're really not the priority the venue, drinks and tunes are fab :) read more

A group of us were in Manchester for the weekend for a friend's birthday. We found the staff in Hula to be absolutey disgusting and beyond inappropriate. My friend asked a man behind the bar to take a photo of our group. When we looked at the photo he had taken, he had just zoomed in on her chest and taken photos. My friend was appalled, as were the rest of us. When we asked the bar man what he thought he was doing, we were met with laughing and snide remarks. Another bar man asked what was going on, when we told him he also laughed. This is absolutely disgusting behaviour and made us feel violated and embarrassed. We were very calm about the situation and asked to see the manager, who yet again, laughed. I am actually shocked that this is even remotely deemed as acceptable. It leaves me to question what else goes on in this place. From research I have done, this is not the first time something like this has happened in Hula Tiki. This vile behaviour seems to be a common occurrence. Never mind the horrendous and rude way it was 'dealt' with by management. My message to Hula Tiki would be - replace your staff as we are minded to go to the police about this. read more
