A fresh one for us here - Hula has just opened up on Stevenson Square and is set to have an official launch full of celebs. Styled a Tiki Bar and billed to be Manchester's Mahiki, our hopes were high... ... And pretty much dashed. I was expecting a really tropical yet sophisticated interior, like Mahiki, but all we got really were pillars painted black/ patterned and a fish tank. Oh, and spiky fish shaped lamp shades. The bar area was a bit more swanky but the whole place just wasn't big enough to pull it off. The ladies toilets were nice enough though. Free to get in but it was almost empty when we arrived at about midnight on a Friday, never a good sign. Playing it safe with spirits and wine, the prices at £3.50 which is pretty much standard. A friend tried a cocktail, their creamy Planet of the Apes for £6.50, which didn't exactly go down a treat but perhaps he should have chosen more carefully. The music was ok, but we were all chatting so much we barely noticed it; and there was absolutely no question of dancing. We moved on to do that. The staff were fairly friendly, they actually just seemed a bit bored. They weren't exactly run off their feet. Maybe I'll go back when more people have heard of it (cue celeb launch) but I would never stay in here for long. Not enough tropical flair and absolutely no Hula.

Hula is a very cool place it reminded me of being on holiday. All the decoration reminded me of a pool side bar. It was really busy but we managed to get served at the bar within a couple of minutes. Very recommended for something different. Music on a Saturday is R&B. They have a great cocktail list but there special is a zombie because if you have more than one then that's how you end up

Hula is worth a visit on Tuesday night when their unusual cocktails are half price. There is something rather comforting about walking into a tropical paradise to escape the season's blustery winds and rain. They've done well with the retro beach-hut decor in here, bamboo wallpaper, hanging fish and flower garlands add to the kitsch effect. However, it still feels that something is missing with the overall ambiance, and it takes a while to get into the groove when you're dressed in your work best. You can't beat the two for one offer for the cocktails though. Whether it's the expertly made Mai Tai, Hopper or The Planet of the Apes, they'll all get your tropical juices flowing for the princely sum of £3.30.

Hula in the Northern Quarter was designed by Bernard Carroll who also created the well known footballers wife's bar Panacea and Walrus (also in the Northern Quarter) The concept is very obvious and given the difficult theme usually reserved for nights like end of year party's for students, it is incredibly tastefully done - and so much fun!! bamboo and palm tree features, wooden Tiki carvings, island-inspired murals, puffer-fish lights and a tropical fish tank set the Tiki-beach scene.... I love it!! Considering they stock a rum collection that rivals a Jamaican cab firm in Deptford, I would make you first cocktail a Daiquiri or suchlike. There is rather quirky quiz night held every Tuesday night... not too sure what time it starts sorry, and Wednesday to Saturday there is always a DJ mixing some rare and soulful grooves to get you to Chill Winston!

Hello new favourite NQ bar!…read more Popped here for a few drinks on Weds night and have to say I was really impressed - what a hidden gem and great new addition to the Northern Quarter. Housed in the Hatters Hostel basement, you're talking about a cavernous speakeasy style bar that's been nautically/fashionably revamped without trying too hard, which is refreshing. It's similar to the Gas Lamp in decor but with a grittier edge that makes it seem pretty relaxed and a place for any time of the day. A great selection of craft beer on tap and in bottles, classic video games on free play in the back and a very cool special cinema (the Kino room) showing classic movies each night (Fear and Loathing was on when I came in) for patrons. Friendly staff, beer slightly cheaper than neighbouring bars and because it's tucked away maybe a haven from some of the 'nobbier' elements making the NQ a shadow of it's former self on a weekend evening. Can't wait to go back! (Fast free wifi too - with no need for a password - sweet!)

Tip: If you didn't know this place was a bar you'd walk right by it without noticing a thing; that's what I did for two months before I read about it and decided to go in and check it out. Boy, am I glad I did! The venue is pretty small; it looks and feels like it was whisked directly here from NYC and dropped smack-dab into the middle of Manchester. I've seen several other places that tried to pull off this whole pawnshop vibe, but they all didn't quite cut it. I'm very pleased to note that Dusk til Pawn has got the look and feel totally nailed :-) There's a juke box that plays for free; its chock full of awesome 1980s music; hearing it playing just augments the retro-charm of this place - it's hard not to feel like you're in the Bowery or the Lower East Side of New York. The first time I came here it was to check-out the motif of this very cool little place, but after I ordered my first drink, I knew I had to come back frequently - the cocktails taste amazing, and they're strong enough to kick like a mule! There's no question in my mind that on my next trip to Manchester, I'll come back here for sure :-)

Cocktails were universally excellent - I adored the Lemon Meringue Pie which came with a toasted topping, the Vesper was as lethal as it was smooth, the Aviatrix came with a violet "fog" which was one of the best drink gimmicks I've ever come across and the remaining drinks we had featuring mint and campari (from the first page...I can't remember their names) were also brilliant. Prices range from about £6 - 8 which is basically as good as it gets for cocktails of this quality. Music was good with the DJ playing a range from jazz to 90s R&B. Service was a bit slow at times and they totally messed up the bill but the servers were all extremely nice and friendly, it's not a snooty place at all. Highly recommended.

The cocktails are great and the bar staff are always willing to help out with flavours. I fell in love with the Sazerac because of this place! They have a black and white movie on a wall from a projector and great music all the time with the comfiest of sofas to relax in with a drink. Fitzgerald on a Thursday has 2 cocktails for £10 and live music which ranges from a Ceilidh to R 'n' B Jazz. Just a fantastic mix and such an easy going atmosphere that I have literally spent hours in. I hired the place out for a cocktail making class for a birthday gift for a friend and it was just amazing fun. We had three cocktails (that we got to choose based on the birthday girl's favourites) and we all got to go behind the bar to make them (8 of us taking turns) but best of all it was only around £30 a head...for the whole place to ourselves! I've been more times than I can count but now I'm in Edinburgh I do miss the place!

The portions are on the smaller side for the price, which is about £30 per person for a meal of 3-4 dishes. The atmosphere is on the lively bougie side, they had a DJ for a while as well. I liked the decor and how vibes overall. The staff were friendly and polite but service was quite slow as it took ages to get the waiters attention to order. The one thing that disappointed me was the lack of sake ok the menu as they seemed to be a Japanese tapas bar, so sake seems like an obvious option. They only have whiskey, beer, wine and cocktails though. Also they only accept card, no cash and also American Express which I found out when I tried.. Overall good food, chic atmosphere and lively, but quite pricey, no sake and not so efficient service.

This was 4 small plates for just £15. Very good value! There are 4 different sections with 3 different items in each - since there was 4 of us, we tried every item - plus duplicates of what sounds the best. Depending what you get, you won't leave hungry. But it depends - the ribs are more filling than e.g. the dim sum selection. My fav from the Summer Set Menu were the ribs, and the mackerel donburi I think. Duck and watermelon salad was good even though I don't like watermelon! Fish collars were yummy too! So much of it was good! We also got dessert which was not included in the set menu - costs £6 each dessert. My rating has gone up to 5 stars from 4 because every time I have been, the food is almost spot on. Would recommend it to anyone. Service is friendly too.
