For me (with hearing issues) there is not enough soft furnishings to soak up some of the sound, so in the end I removed my hearing aids. There wasn't any loud misic it was just general restaurant chatter. Before I booked I checked out the menu, and is very much in the style of Bistrot Pierre. Bistrot Pierre was founded in 1994, and the COTE series of restaurants was founded in 2007. However, the latter have more sites. They automatically add 12.5% to the bill. I'm happy to pay this if confirmed by the staff that they actually do get the money. Nevertheless, I'd prefer to decide upon my contribution. Before I start about the choices, it was an interesting observation subsequently checking the bill to see that my 11 yo chose the most expensive items that appeared on the bill. Also, is it waiter for all genders these days? Has this hit the languages that have masculine and feminine for objects, and people? I'm going to distinguish between the two by Male Waiter (MW) and Female Waiter (FW). We got: Me - Medium Daughter - Blue Son - Rare They were delivered from the kitchen by two MWs. The FW offered me a free drink (I declined), as they couldn't un-cook my steak. We all enjoyed the steaks, but they are supposed to be locally reared and aged 30 days. I have had better aged steaks that don't ooze blood..... However, they were tender. There was also errors on a nearby table: First they brought out one plate of Steak Frites, when two was order, and they thought the old ladies wanted to share.... Not so.... They were told the additional one would take 7 minutes. Quite rightly they asked for the one available to be taken back and both brought to the table at the same time. When their bill arrived, it had 3 steak frites, instead of 2..... I am not quite sure why these mistakes happen: our steaks, and the ladies' steak frites.... Would I return to Cote Brasserie - YES.

The food is always at a high standards and having eaten there several times now I can say I've eaten a lot from the main menu and have never had any problems whatsoever. The staff are attentive, polite and even spark into some friendly conversation which is nice. They have a reasonable lunch time offer for 2 course or three course meals. They also offer pre-theatre menus too. Can't fault the place.

You will find greenery running all upside the walls as well as a fantastic view of the canal. In the evening the ambience inside is also great. Reservations are available but you can usually get in without too much of a wait time. On this occasion I ordered a spinach and mushroom crepe which was fantastic! It's probably my favourite vegetarian dish that they do. It's a sensible portion that leaves you satisfied. For dessert I ordered the praline crepe which was again fantastic. You generally find with dessert crepes that they can do no bad no matter where your buying it from. Cotes crepes are above standard in terms of quality with a light pancake and not overly sweet praline feeling. For me in particular this restaurant shines in the summer. The cocktails are great and the dining experience is unique.

After hearing good things about this place for gluten free, I called in and decided to order from their lunch menu. It was around £11 for 2 courses. For my starter, I ordered the Eggs Florentine which is a poached egg on gluten free bread with hollandaise sauce, and sadly it was a giant, bland mess. I didn't really like the sauce, there was too much of it and it got messy really quickly, the dish as a whole was poor, unseasoned and the bread was burnt. The staff didn't seem friendly, service overall seemed slow, they had a sense of arrogance and shock when I sent my food back as well. One thing that shocked me was that the old fashioned decor Cote had only one member of staff working, with the other looking like he was in 'training', running around like a headless chicken with my food before someone else brought it, based on what was to come I'd have wished he would have run off with my food. For my main, I ordered the seabass and again experienced similar problems, the fish its-self was too oily and watery to the point I ended up leaving it, the only thing of decent quality was the chive potatoes which for me isn't right. Sadly, due to issues with the overall feel inside Cote, food quality and service I feel Cote deserves a one-star rating with the main positive being the use of 'Gluten Free' flags in the food to minimise the risk of cross-contamination etc.

In fact, though the décor and layout inside is similar, its actually not a mere bar but a fine French brasserie. Its open as early as 8am for breakfast and throughout the day for lunch, dinner, coffee or drinks. Its pretty pricey but the food is of very high quality, making it worth the money if you fancy treating yourself. There's also often an offer on, but this may require you to print out a voucher so its worth checking the website before you go. The best value is probably the prix fixe menu, which is 1, 2 or 3 courses starting from around £7 at lunchtime and £12.50 for dinner. Personally though, if you are going to Chez Gerard you're better off completely splashing out, and going for the demi poulet from the a la carte menu, half a grilled corn-fed chicken with herbs (they don't spoilt it), pommes frites (chips innit) and a gorgeous garlic butter sauce (wehey!). I ordered the beef Sunday roast, which came with the most gloriously crispy potatoes and parsnips.I took one star off because the beef was chewier and tougher than I'd expect. For pudding, they had a gluten-free cheesecake not on the menu that I'm glad I asked about. The roast and dessert came out looking amazing. For two courses at £17.95, I had a nicer experience than I did at a fancy place in Glasgow and for less than a single main. Wait staff at the Social were fantastic: Northern hospitality for you!
