Browns Birmingham - My fish pie - good

Browns in Birmingham is just outside the (by British standards) humungous shopping center of the Bullring. To be honest I was just looking for something light to eat (and warm to sit) while waiting for Mrs G. I chose the fish pie that I had had before in Browns Nottingham and enjoyed it. Always worth a visit Review #79 2023

So its hard for me to properly rate British restaurants as I don't have much experience with them…read moreyet. But I will say I really enjoyed Brown's. My partner and I had a reservation for afternoon tea on a Saturday. They offered an option with Hendricks gin to accompany the standard afternoon tea offerings. The restaurant appeared to be very crowded and noisy downstairs. We checked in and were quickly led upstairs to our table. Upstairs was less hectic but still noisy. A server came over quickly to explain a few things about the menu. It took a bit longer than expected to receive our tea and gin, but judging by how busy they were I found it acceptable. Each of us received a tea pot with loose leaf tea which tasted fine to me. But I am American, so my tea opinion may not be worth much... The food consisted of standard crust free sandwiches like egg, salmon, and cucumber. I found them all quite tasty! We each had a fruit scone with cream and jam. Yum yum! The dessert offering seemed lacking compared to other afternoon teas I've experienced. It was 3 different items. I can't remember what they were at this point so ill just post a pic. But my partner enjoyed them all. Although a chain restaurant is probably not ideal for afternoon tea, it seemed pretty affordable at £24 for two. I left feeling very full. Many people around us ordered lunches and the food looked fantastic. The drink menu is also pretty impressive. I would love to go back for dinner and some cocktails. Yes the service was slow and it was super crowded as it was a Saturday in the Bull Ring. However, I will definitely be back at some point to try out the regular menu!

Blue lights lend a hazy ambience and the way the tables are organised ( in long lines two abreast but well spaced) makes intimate dining possible without losing the buzz of the place. The food is good Bistro fare; vegetables are always beautifully and often unusually cooked and there's a great cocktail bar for a ore-dinner glass of bubbly. We always eat here rather than at the adjacent Queens Hotel restaurant, when staying overnight.

Lovely and clean environment, comfy chairs and brilliant service. The menu is not too fussy, with a lot of popular favourites on offer. I went with the 'Lake District cheese & bacon burger with fries' (£14) and my friend 'halloumi, red pepper, avocado, sweet chilli burger with polenta chips' (£12.50). Both were very enjoyable, well presented, and well seasoned. I then tried their americano coffee, a lovely bean, a good job with the extraction, and they even included warm milk to not ruin the delicate tastes. Price isn't too bad, three courses you can have for £30-40 per head excluding drinks.

I have had this place bookmarked on Yelp since moving here. I was so thrilled when my boyfriend…read morereserved us a table for a Sunday picnic afternoon tea. It is located on the 4th floor of Selfridges with only a few tables overlooking the Bull Ring. We were sat immediately in a crowded section of tiny tables. I assumed since we booked the afternoon tea we would be sat at a one of the many empty nice large tables along the balcony. Maybe you need to request it? So we wedged into our tiny table and waited... It was about ten minutes until we were waited on. There definitely was not a heavy focus on customer service here. After our order was placed, the table next to us had to call over our server just to take their order. I wouldn't expect that from an upscale brasserie like the Balcony. The cocktails here were so tasty. I cannot remember my drink name (Mexican bird maybe) but it had tequila and elderflower. It was served in an unusual glass that reminded me of a reed diffuser jar. I really liked it. The afternoon tea was so cute. It literally was served on a mini picnic table. It was the main reason I wanted to come...that is how cute the picnic table is. The sandwich selection consisted of tuna, cheese and tomato, and coronation chicken. Each was served on a little bun. Desserts were two macarons and a red velvet cupcake. And lastly, two scones with cream and jam finished off the selection. I absolutely loved it! We were each served a surprisingly large pot of loose leaf tea. I think we each made 4 cups out of it! Just be careful not to burn yourself as the teapots are metal and lids don't latch on. I really did enjoy the afternoon tea at the Balcony. Both the food and drinks were fantastic. I do think the service we experienced was sub par for this type of establishment, which is why I'm giving it a 3. I expected a lot more from Selfridges. But I think I would give it another shot. The fish and chips sure looked great.

*Classy & stunning ambience *Exceptional service…read more*Reasonably priced *Lovely dinner music *Good food & drinks I thoroughly enjoyed my meal here with Family. The hostess was courteous. She seated us without our full party present. We were able to get a look at the menu b4 the rest of our party arrived. Our head waiter or manager and server were attentive and accommodating. For apps we had half a dozen oysters, chicken skewers, and duck rolls. Drinks were the Porn star martini (my new fave), a Bellini and margaritas. All delicious. For entrees, we had the crispy duck served with rice & mash, and the sirloin. All very very good. Love is!

Whilst the restaurant is on the more pricier side, the service and trendy atmosphere more than makes up for it. The 23 year old blond hostess was charming and seeing the balloons my friend had gotten me, was quick to congratulate me and start up a conversation on our plans for the evening and what she may recommend. Once we were seated, the waiter came round numerous times to make sure we were doing alright and then we had sufficient drinks and food throughout the night. The food was pretty good, but what really made the restaurant stand out were the drinks. The cocktails they've got are simply delicious. The complimentary chocolate truffles for dessert was just another addition to the remarkable service I received throughout the evening. My only criticism was that despite having joined their loyalty club earlier in the week, after being tempted by triple points on your birthday and a 'welcome gift' online; at the restaurant, the £20 welcome voucher which was supposedly pre-loaded on my card and needs redeeming within 25 days of receiving it could not be used as it needed another 20 hours to be activated. Whilst it was great to receive triple points, its not a restaurant I would go unless there's an occasion to celebrate and with the £20 expring in a few weeks, it was quite the let down that I was unable to use it.

Myself and a friend who likes to think he is a lot funnier than he actually is (we all know one of those) went in the other day for a meal and were pretty impressed from the moment we walked into the venue. The place is immaculate.....like SO fresh! It's clean, smells like IKEA flatpack and has a really polished finish....I especially like the little courtyard as you walk into the venue....drinks out there on a sunny evening....lovely! We were walked upstairs by the manager after checking our reservation and taken to a table. The resturant is vast with many small rooms giving a cozy feel. We went into an upstairs room with large glass windows overlooking the canal and were sat down.....slight gripe....the restaurant was pretty quiet where we were and we were sat right next to another woman that was eating alone even though there were other tables which would have allowed a little more space/room to chat about mildly inappropriate topics....haha....not a huge ine really just felt a little weird as there were other tables available. We both had the pre theatre menu which is pretty extensive and has a lot of good options. We both had the rabbit pate to start....it was good but don't think I would go for it again.....then I had the pork medallions for my main. The pork was beautifully cooked with a side of dauphinoise and seasonal veg. All amazing I must say...big shouts to the sauce on the whole plate which was rich and full of flavour. The other slight gripe I have is the slightly over attentive service while you are in the venue but im putting that down to everyone there being so keen to impress. I think you can let people relax a little....what you are doing is really good :) 5* will be back....100% try this place out ASAP.

I can honestly say I'm honoured to have visited here with another fellow yelper. I must admit I've never been a big enthusiast of French cuisine, purely because my knowledge in wines accompanying a meal is zero to none. However! This restaurant has opened my eyes once again to European because the food was fantastic and to top that, what makes the difference is the customer service making me and my friend feel like home in this wonderful feeling overlooking the canal. My meal consisted of the pre theatre menu with pork medallions and the chocolate torte dessert. The Pork Medallions was glazed with honey and mustard and layed with some sausage, mustard and pepper sauce with caramelised Apple. Such a combo makes a great mixture that your tastebuds just simply can't resist. The chocolate torte I thought was quite rich (not a massive chocolate fan so bear with me!) however, this was neutralised by the amazing black current ice cream produced from the restaurant chain itself. For an amazing price of £15 pp I can honestly say I feel like I robbed the restaurant for their hospitality. You have made me a very happy yelper Serena and I hope my tipped reached you. Would visit again
