We ordered so much sushi and she brought out the most delicious cake for his special day. And I didn't even grab a photo but for a sushi place, the cake was PHENOMENAL. Blueberry with marscopone. Wonderful meal. Husker Roll was a massive hit as was the spider roll. Hiro's Crunch and spider used to be massive rolls. Now they're much smaller, which is kinda disappointing. Solid D-grade or lower, depending on if you're actually expecting Japanese food (not here). When you walk in, it smells like cleaning solution has been applied, but then not removed, so you're left smelling both the cleaning solution and the grunge it was trying to remove. But maybe I walked in just after a cleaning or something. Or old carpet with too many treatments? Idk. The only pro: the agedashi tofu was good. The dashi was decent, nothing to write home about in terms of flavor; comparable to what you'd get from a shelf brand dashi, but actually in the arena of Japanese food. And the squares of soft tofu were fried nicely. Other than that, my stop here was roundly disappointing. The pork bun had a weird, super hard bun that was legitimately difficult to bite through. This is NOT a soft bao bun. The pork belly didn't have the delectable mixture of spices I expect from Chinese BBQ. And what's with the American pickle on it? Flavor shock! Two thumbs down. The gyoza was pretty disappointing, too: deep fried, not pan fried. Completely changes the texture you expect from gyoza and somewhat obliterates the flavor of the insides. But it gets the apps out faster, I guess. I got the Husker Roll for a main. Inexplicably, they used glutinous rice for the roll. I suspect it's because it's easier to make a large quantity of rice and keep it, and you don't actually have to perfect the art of sushi rice, properly seasoned and fluffed. Total letdown. Weirdly chewy texture on the outside, paired with the soft cream cheese on the inside was over-the-top bad. I was looking forward to the steak on the inside... totally lost in all the other weirdness going on, and the sweet sauce on top did not complement and highlight the ingredients of the roll well. The service was also strange. Idk if it was just because it was midday and slow and they were bored, but our serving team was way too fast taking away plates we actually still needed. I managed to stop one of the serving assistants from absconding with a plate I was still using, but it was incredibly awkward because she didn't seem to know much English. My dining partner was not so lucky with their plate. Overall, the effect made us feel like we were being ushered out the door. All in all, a pretty disappointing experience at Hiro88. I don't think I would return to this location. read more

My first time here in many years and it was A-Ok. I started with a Cosmo and it was bright and refreshing. We also got edamame, totally great! I tried 2 rolls I've never had before. I was pretty disappointed with the husker roll. The meat inside was so dry and small I actually thought I got the wrong roll. The other tempura roll was just not for me. Came in for a work happy hour / dinner and it was a great choice! We can right after work and we had no issue getting space for about 20 people. The service was great, especially considering the size of our group, they checked on us many times and brought our food out nice and quick. Decided to try out this location and see if I like this one or the downtown more. The ambiance of the location is beautiful. Went here on a Saturday night and it wasn't as packed compared to the downtown location. So if you don't want to wait for a long time this location is the go to. We went for the reverse happy hour. A really good deal. The husker roll is my favorite. However, I like how the downtown location makes it than this location. The ratios are a lot better. This location put too much cream cheese and barely any steak in the roll. Still glad I got to try both locations. The west coast roll is also another favorite of mine. I will still go to the downtown location because it's closer to me and I like how they make their rolls there. read more

I went to Hiro with my sister for lunch with our two daughters after visiting Lauritzen Gardens. I typically always love hero and I don't really have not great food here but this time was an exception, unfortunately. I ended up ordering a three item Bento box With teriyaki beef, tempura, and a California roll to split with my daughter (also comes with a soup or salad and a side of rice). The Bento box is a fantastic bang for your buck for lunchtime. We arrived not too long after opening and there were already a decent amount of people in there. The problem was that they didn't have very many servers on the floor so our wait time was quite a bit and our food took a while as well. Our server was very kind, but not the most attentive because she had a lot of other tables. I love their teriyaki sauce and will stand by that it is the best in town, but even that couldn't help my over cooked and cold steak that was served to me in my Bento box. It was especially tough and was not a fantastic flavor. The sauce that they serve with the Tempura was also pretty flavorless. I remember having it and it having a little bit more punch. The other items in my box were good and I really enjoyed the salad with both dressings. I am wondering if it was an off day because usually things are fantastic? My last little qualm had to do with the high chair that we were given for my daughter. We asked for two high chairs as we had two toddlers with us. My daughter was the younger of the two by a year and we got a high chair that had the belt broken off of it. It did not make for a fantastic experience as she was trying to wiggle free for majority of the time. I should've just swapped out the high chairs with my niece but getting my daughter in the high chair to begin with wasn't very fun. Not really their fault I just wish we would've had one with a belt. A classic sushi place! Today my sister and I tried three different rolls: HIRO Special, Columbia River, and West Coast. Our favorite was actually the Hiro special. But you can't go wrong with something topped with eel sauce. We also had the Raspberry Whisp and Classic Mojito for cocktails. Definitely get those! We went during happy hour. Definitely recommend! But their prices aren't terrible during regular hours as well. Fair warning, there are no kids meals/menus here, but if anyone orders the chicken fried rice, there is more than plenty to share with a kiddo. I've tried several rolls and never been disappointed--the menu does a great job of describing the exact flavor and profile. Approachable menu, flavorful sauces, and a great drink list too. Came here on a Thursday after work with my friend for their happy hour which is 3-6:30PM Monday-Friday and 3-6PM Saturday (dine in only). During happy hour, they have deals on their appetizers, drinks, sushi, and more. We had a really great kind attentive server. Our food was pretty good, but I do think it is normally better at other Hiro locations I go to. We each got a cocktail that we both enjoyed. I got the Princess which I enjoyed. We shared crab rangoon which was good. Then we each got some sushi rolls. It wasn't too loud inside or too busy on a Thursday around 5:45PM. Hiro 88 is always my go to sushi place and I really don't see that changing. I love all of their happy hour and reverse happy hour specials. They have really great sushi roll options too. I was excited to try a new sushi spot that seemed to have a great happy hour. I should know not to stray. The sushi was just bad. The rice was gross and the fish not good. I took a bunch home and the hubs said it was not good and threw it away. The other appetizers were good and the stand out was the crab Rangoon. Super light crispy shell with a rich crab and cheese filing. My Bloody Mary came with a crab Rangoon which was cool. The prices were great for happy hour. I have been to Hiro a million times because I just absolutely love their sushi. But this year we decided to go there for an impromptu Mother's Day dinner. We went in and put our names down and it was about an hour or so for a table for 5, which was completely understandable for it being Mother's Day. Once we were seated, we 100% expected to wait forever for service and even longer for our food, which would have been fine with us because again, it was a holiday so you just expect those things when you go out to eat on a busy holiday like that. MUCH to my surprise, the service was spot on. We barely sat down and they were filling out waters and the waitress was over asking if we wanted anything else to drink. Once we placed our drink orders, we decided to order appetizers too. They came out hot, quickly and fresh! Then we ordered about 11 different rolls! Yeah, I know, that was a lot! They came out surprisingly fast and again, everything was hot when needed to be and super fresh. It was all so good! Came here for lunch and ordered a three item bento box with teriyaki salmon, salmon sashimi, and spicy salmon roll along with a seaweed salad appetizer. The bento boxes also come with either a soup or a salad. I would rate overall food 3.5-4/5. The salmon teriyaki was good, but the portion has decreased dramatically since the last time I came. It was only like two bites. The salmon sashimi was very delicious and fresh, but I did not feel that about the spicy salmon rolls-those were average in my opinion. Our seaweed salad portion was also quite small and was not as flavorful as the previous times we have been here. Service was excellent 5/5. Food came out very fast and servers were very attentive and checked in frequently. I am a huge salmon lover and usually judge a sushi restaurant based off of their salmon. I can't speak to the other rolls but overall I was not super impressed by the salmon here and am not sure I would come back. read more

The wait is fairly decent when you visit the west location, but the service is great at both. This place is a good time, and we love a good spicy tuna! ;) Anyway, we (about 6 of us) went recently and both the food and service was great...I think we sat there for about 3 hours (conversation was juicy) and the server was so nice the whole time and didn't rush us to leave...which can be the case at some places. Parking, when we arrived, was plentiful. It does a good business, so either plan to drop off your date/family and park, or arrive early. We got reservations, as it's popular. It was filling up quickly and remained full the entire time we were there. We arrived early in the dinner hours. The fish was delicious. Tasted fresh, soft texture, and was good sized portions. Our server was cheerful and prompt, despite being quite busy. We saw her frequently and she always delivered quickly. There is a beautiful bar, and it's spacious enough to eat at it. I like this for solo sushi runs. It was well stocked. I saw the sushi bar on the other side of the restaurant but noted no one seating there. Was far enough away that I may have missed something. This is a really nice restaurant with lots of customers, we visit at dinner time and it was packed to the gills. We ordered some Miso soup which was absolutely delicious, so was the rest of our food. The service was lacking though, it took forever to get our order and the waitress was rude, not outgoing at all. This made the atmosphere so uptight. Regardless, we had a great meal and a good time.
