After hearing so many positive things about Aberdeen Seafood & Dim Sum, I was expecting a standout…read moremeal, but I left disappointed. The food wasn't bad--it was simply mediocre and underwhelming. The biggest issue was that several dishes were underseasoned and lacked the bold flavors I expect from a good Cantonese restaurant. The Yang Chow fried rice was especially bland and needed more seasoning. The har gow and several of the dim sum items also fell short of expectations. The steamed spare ribs and beef chow fun were okay but nothing memorable. The salt and pepper shrimp was probably the highlight of the meal, but it wasn't unique or better than what I've had at many other Chinese restaurants. Overall, the food was decent, but considering the restaurant's reputation, I expected much more. I don't regret trying it, but I wouldn't make a special trip back.

So... we traveled 1200 miles to have wonderful Chinese Food. The Aberdeen, located off the lobby…read moreof the White Plains Residence Inn, is known for its dim sum - which is excellent. However, the rest of the broad and deep menu is excellent as well. The rich Sweet Corn Chicken Soup is sweet, thick (but not gummy) and quite tasty. The pan fried dumplings were outstanding. They were perfectly cooked and well stuffed with minced pork and veggies. The Honey Walnut Shrimp were amazing - plump and perfectly dressed. Finally, the Sesame Chicken was amazing. Perfectly cooked but the best thing is that the chicken was moist, rich and flavorful. So, if we're ever back in White Plains, you know where we'll be dining.

We were four and mostly agreed we enjoyed the appetizers (especially the tri-color vegetable…read moredumplings and the crystal shrimp dumplings), but not so much the main courses (especially not the marinated grilled salmon and the Buddha's delight). Also, early on, we had a little service issue that was tacitly resolved in our favor. We only wanted to order appetizers at first and later order the main courses. The server told us words to the effect that they take the order for everything at the same time because if later the restaurant is packed, the kitchen gets overwhelmed, and, also, they bring out the food whenever it's ready. As requested, we gave her our order for everything, but ultimately she was able to just serve the appetizers first and then pause until we were done with them before she brought out the main courses. My wife wanted a sweet white wine with her fish, like a Mosel. The closest they said they had was a fruity white Riesling, called Selbach/Incline, which turned out to be very fruity and delicious!

We went for dinner and the loud party music absolutely did not fit the calm, natural interior decor. In fact, the music was irritating and confusing when the decor looks more zen-like. Not sure what they're going for there. Service was not very attentive either. No one ever asked how our food was or if we needed anything. Water cup was left empty often. So then am I paying for some magical taste in these dishes? Because the prices are double that of some excellent Chinese options not only in Queens, but even Long Island. Again, all the dishes were presented very well, but if I ate blindfolded I would not have noticed anything truly amazing. Lamb potstickers were good, but could use some more cumin and spice. Seafood fried rice had hot chilli peppers in it - why?? Also may want to warn customers of this since families with young kids ordering rice/noodles may be ordering for kids who don't eat spicy food (not indicated on menu). Shanghai soup dumpling were...unusual. Adding a goji berry on top is a little gimmicky, but we all hated the mushy filling. The meat falls apart inside the dumpling and perhaps that's what they're going for? I also suspect there is a lot of msg and salt being used. The duck was delicious cooked, cut perfectly and presented nicely. A warning about the cranberry sauce - if you have it during Thanksgiving, great go for it. If you don't like cranberry sauce during Thanksgiving, don't even bother with it here. Duck is not turkey (what an insult that would be to compare the two) but I'm guessing that's where the idea for cranberry sauce came from. In the end, it felt like westernised cuisine masquerading as Chinese food. (My family wanted to give Jia 2 stars - they never want to go back, but I'm feeling generous :P) My star rating legend: 5: A+ Worth a special journey (ie. I would go out of my way, maybe even take a flight somewhere just for this; exceptionally amazing) 4: A excellent, a must try, solid place 3: B good; nothing extraordinary, but would definitely go again 2: C personally would never go again (unless invited by someone and I didn't get to pick the place), but I can see how others might find something appealing 1: Fail. I would never return and recommend no on else goes either.

This time they were not busy, and when I picked up the order they said it was "perfect timing" and just ready. Unfortunately, when I got home the fried rice was undercooked, the food was cold, and despite specifically asking for it to be mild/not spicy, the General Tso's chicken was extremely spicy. I can deal with warming food back up, but undercooked rice and food that is far spicier than requested are much harder to fix. I guess I could have brought it back or called, but honestly I just didn't want to spend more time and energy dealing with it. I understand every restaurant can have an off night, but this was disappointing enough that I probably won't risk ordering it again.

I ordered the black pepper filet mignon, cooked exactly as requested--medium--and it was excellent. The filet was incredibly succulent and practically melted in my mouth. The black pepper sauce had just the right amount of kick, and the portion was very generous. We shared the vegetable fried rice, and my friend, who is on a health kick, asked if they could prepare it with brown rice and no onions. They were very accommodating and happily made the adjustments. The fried rice also had Maitake mushrooms, which added a nice touch. She also ordered the sweet-and-sour tofu, which I didn't realize was on the appetizer menu. It was actually a full-sized portion! I tasted a piece and thought it was very good. We both had a glass of Riesling, which was delicious and leaned toward the sweeter side, just the way I like it. The restaurant itself is beautiful, with two impressive dining-room floors and magnificent chandeliers. Since it was such a beautiful day, dining outdoors was the perfect choice. The seating was very comfortable, and the staff couldn't have been nicer or more accommodating with some of my friend's special requests. One note about parking: finding a spot on Greenwich Avenue can be challenging. The meters are limited to two hours, which should be enough time for lunch, but I was arriving early, so I needed more time. (Every few months) My wife saw Soup Dumpling Plus and wanted to give it a try. We brought our daughter at around 6 pm on a Saturday and were seated after about a 20 minute wait. The restaurant is very popular, we got a comfortable booth, and the professional staff got right to work. During our wait, we had selected our choices on a paper, and upon seating gave the paper to the waitress. Soon thereafter, the food started landing. Obviously we spent dinner comparing every dish to the competitor. I would be splitting hairs to say there's much of a difference on many of the dishes. Pork buns and soup dumplings were both excellent. The vegetable fried rice was subtle and nicely prepared. I enjoyed the pork with celery and five spiced tofu entree, our daughter enjoyed the sesame chicken, and my wife liked the chicken with udon noodles. The only somewhat "miss" for us was the cucumber salad. Certainly not bad but the pieces were a bit large and that limited the flavor. Glad we gave it a try and we understand why it's very popular!
