I'm really surprised to see not all reviews being 5s. We had literally the best breakfast of our stay. Fresh berries, large portions and the farmer's market Açaí bowl was absolutely lovely. The staff were extremely nice and welcoming. And the prices were extremely fair as compared to the other sub par places we have been to in the resort areas. I had a Farmer's market açaí bowl which was described as being topped with fruits in season; however they were out of papaya but If got it anyway. This turned out to be just bananas and blueberries for fruit, which I like both but was hopping for more variety. The Granola was good and unique and the bowl came with coconut and honey. I asked to not have either coconut or honey and to add almond butter drizzle which was on their menu as a possible add on; however they didn't have almond butter either and my final bowl had coconut. Overall the açaí was fine and I liked the granola but this turned out to just be an average bowl due to the shortage of ingredients. I would probably not come back. read more

We decided to grab some breakfast at Hina Rae's Cafe before heading to Volcanos National Park. Normally, I would have headed directly to Waimea Coffee Company, but my son and daughter-in-law got a recommendation from a friend to try Hina Rae's. No one was raving about their food after the meal. I ordered waffles and they seemed very similar to frozen waffles. The acai bowl was pretty good. We did a little road trip from our resort and wanted a snack so we found this great place and stopped in. Local small business operated by a great staff we enjoyed the Açaí and had the Buzz bowl and the Cacao Craze, the Plain Waffle and a great coffee called the Pistachio Latte. The menu included other dishes with their house made waffles in both savory and sweet versions. Staff were very nice and everything was very reasonably priced, a refreshing change from the resort prices we were paying for meals. I didn't get a chance to take photos of all the dishes because we had to eat in shifts so we could keep the grandkids happy. If You Know You Know! The waffles were outstanding and worth the wait. I was a little bummed they ran out of bananas but the cashier was really nice and allowed me to get extra strawberries. If you're in Waimea this is the place. Before arriving I saw tons of reviews saying the workers were rude. When we arrived the workers were young for sure but definitely not rude. Got in while empty and within a few minutes it was crowded. The seating area is cozy so I'd recommend taking your food to go. As far as the food - I think it's scrumptious! Nice and fresh made sandwiches, their ice ube latte was delicious as well, not so ube tasting but the flavoring compliments the coffee well. I devoured so didn't have a picture. read more

Stopped by spontaneously on a drive around the island. It looks like a nice spot for breakfast or brunchy types of food and coffee. The service was really slow unfortunately. They have a sign that alludes to "quality takes time" - which I agree with, but we only ordered a few iced drinks and sat there watching as one employee made ONE drink... every few minutes. There was a small group ahead of us, it was their drinks and açai bowls, then our drinks, and everything was coming out one at a time. It took almost 20 minutes and then they were out of something so I didn't really get what I ordered. It was hard to tell if the employee was not a great multitasker or if the shop just isn't set up so they could have several drinks in progress at the same time. Came here to try their açaí bowls! You can add additional toppings - I added poi to mine. It wasn't worth though - there was only a little bit added to my bowl. The poi was really thin and didn't taste like anything. However, the acai bowl itself was very very good - I definitely would come back for it! This place is one of my favorite açaí bowl and brunch spots in town! The staff is friendly and their food items are always delicious. I get the "get in my belly pork belly" and the "waffle blt"! My favorite açaí bowl is "the buzz" but they have plenty of other delicious items. I've seen a few reviews complain about the service being slow, but what they don't understand is that not only are the girls there to take your orders, but they are also in the back making them too. I used to come to Hina Raes in highschool. it was sooo good! Came back again today and was so disappointed! The service could use some work. No "hello" Or "enjoy" no words at all when going to the counter to order my food. Just some girls in their pajama pants standing behind the counter. I ordered A smoothie, Acai bowl, and panini. It was almost $50! There was only one smoothie option and when I received it had a rotten taste. The acai bowl also had rotten bananas on. I took one sip of the smoothie and Returned it and asked for a refund. I have never done that anywhere. They assured me that they could refund me but I never did get a refund. Came here around 12pm on a Friday, not super busy when we ordered. The girls worked super quick, we waited barely 5-8 minutes and our açaí bowl came out right away. The fruit in my açaí bowl was super fresh and sweet. It was really in inside, lots of seating and tables. The only con was that all the menus were at the front with the cashier when we arrived. I recently went to Hina Rae's Waimea and let me just say NEVER AGAIN. In specifics this one worker that was going by "Lei" was. ERY RUDE and disrespectful to my family while taking my order she would roll her eyes and was eyeing out my family and while taking orders she proceeded to use Volver language when we asked for requests on our order. We came in for breakfast and I had a Hina Rae's Açai bowl a half serving which was just the perfect size because I also ordered the two eggs cooked any style with meat. I had spam and Brown rice. Hubby had the same thing but with bacon. Oh yeah, they also had bread. Mine was sourdough one slice cut diagonally and then placed it in a waffle maker. They added strawberry jam and slap butter. I can't say I didn't like it, but it was just was different. Service was excellent. My hubby is a ketchup, sort of guy and they had it for him. There is seating inside. Found Hina's on Yelp. Was on my way to Kona side from Hilo and Waimea. Service was good, quick and friendly. I did have trouble finding the place as there was only a small sign and had to call. Its opposite of the grocery store by the "DMV" I was told. I recommend a bigger marquis sign. Had an amazing Acai bowl and also a chia seed pudding. How can a person resist a healthy pudding? Walked into the Waimea location, half a dozen people sitting at the main table happily eating/chatting. I could hear somebody in the back cooking so I eagerly waited at the counter while drooling for my yummy breakfast. After a good 3-4 minutes, a girl comes up from behind me, acting bothered that she had to take my order. No hello or thank you to be found. I sat on a barstool by the front door to wait, eventually hearing my name ever so faintly called. After she handed me the bag, she followed me towards the door sitting back down at the table while they all laughed. It was such an uncomfortable situation on top of being disappointing and expensive. I was lucky to see maybe 1.5 pieces of bacon on the entire bagel, but lots of jalapeños!! Sandwich was $11.50 + $.75 "to go" charge for a sandwich size paperbag...and I tipped almost $2 upon ordering. It's definitely the worst restaurant experience in my 30 years on island. Tossed it in the trash as I couldn't trust what had been done to my food. False advertisement and bad attitude equals zero stars! read more

Very unprofessional environment overall. Hina Rae's has been around for a while and in the past has been nothing but great--Up until several recent visits that were very disappointing. We were not greeted or acknowledged by any of the workers at all, when taking orders the workers sit down/slouch while taking your order which was unpleasant, and none of them took the time to properly hold a customer-worker interaction (no please, thank you, enjoy). Workers attire is not even close to uniform, more like a roll out of bed with what I'm wearing look. The music playing in the cafe was very vulgar and inappropriate, and it seems as if the cafe is ran by teenagers with no supervision or professionalism. There was also a piece of dead roach handed on my plastic spoon....Ive always remembered the açaí bowls being the best around however, this is the third time they've served me an açaí bowl with rotten bananas. I don't know why the reviews for this place are so low. I honestly feel like people are just posting low ratings because of personal, vindictive reasons because this place is really good. We first tried Hina Rae's at the Parker farmer's market years ago and were impressed at how good their acai bowls came out, especially considering that they made them all right there in front of you under a tent! Then we found the cafe itself and have been going there instead. (It's super cute in there, decorations are very nice) I love that they have a lot of different acai bowl choices. (I love the beeswax with poi topping) can't speak for their food, since their acai bowls are what we go there for but you should totally check them out!
