Been craving for a loco moco since arrived in Hawaii and I was determined to try this place out with its high reviews so that even when it said cash only, I spent 4 bucks to get 20 bucks out of the atm machine they had on site. I ordered the loco moco but was really disappointed when their loco moco was delivered to the table. The gravy was sweeter than expected and too thick. The hamburger patty was not cooked thoroughly, and the juice made the rice a reddish color. Maybe I should have been clear about well done... but, suffice it to say I did not really enjoy the meal. Even if the meat was cooked thoroughly the taste was not enjoyable. To be fair, I should have pointed this out to the manager but was in a hurry to get to my next destination.

Great breakfast spot. Incredible menu, huge portions, and friendly service. We had the Churro French Toast special and Banana Mac Nut Pancakes. Both were fantastic. Parking can be tricky but there is more located behind the building. Come early to avoid having to wait.

Always great! No place like Hawaiian Style. Service is on point and so is quality of food. Only thing is parking can be a slight challenge but it's for sure worth it.

What more can I say? This place is amazing the time you walk in to the time you leave you are treated like family. It can be crowded and the noise level was amazing. The food is always amazing and every time we come to the island this is a must stop for our family.

Delicious, filling food, generous portions, served hot! Service was amazing - so attentive, friendly and heartwarming aloha, truly Hawaiian style. Restaurant was clean, great lighting and welcoming homey atmosphere. There was a long line to get in - and now you know why!!

TL; DR-- DELICIOUS food (get the Mac nut Haupia pancakes!), great service, small parking lot, cash only. Have been here many times over the years and this place keeps getting better and never disappoints. This is their original location and found out they expanded and have a second location in Hilo. This place definitely had a glow up since the last time we were here... light and bright with plenty of seating compared to the homey bar seating of years ago. Mac nut Haupia pancakes -- fluffy soft pancakes with decadent Haupia sauce... who needs syrup? Luau Stew -- lau lau just in a stew style... soft taro leaves and tender pieces of pork. My go to!!! Beef stew -- delicious and tender meat

Very large portions. Very quick service. It is a fast paced small diner like restaurant. Feels like you're eating at family's house. I got the Loco Moco that had 3 different meats, and honestly I could've just had the original. The gravy could use some seasoning and the meat was a tad dry but overall it was an okay dish. I also ordered one of the Coconut cream pancakes and boy oh boy was that pancake huge! I would have been okay just getting the pancake without the topping because it was tooo much making the pancake soggy. The pancake batter had a weird gummy taste to it but I will still order it because the fluffiness was unmatched. Overall, we drove about 90 minutes to get here, I would't say I would do that again, but if I am in the area, than yes.

Our favorite for local Hawaiian food in Waimea. Food is always very good and the pancakes are ginormous and the best. Service is always quick with a local vibe.

This place is so good. Got a large loco moco to split and but was it so good and large. Half a papaya is a must anywhere I go in Hawaii. Our server was great and so friendly. However, the second time I came back with 45 min prior to closing, they didn't take anyone else. When I asked how early we needed to check-in next time, the response was vague and a bit rude. So I wasn't thrilled about that. Not dinging them for that though. So check/in early event pre-farmers market shopping is the lesson we got from that. It's a must stop for authentic Hawaiian food.

Excellent food and service- yes it's cash only so come prepared or just use their atm whichever The loco moco is fire The servings are massive The haupia pancakes are epic

If you want a hearty meal at a low price, stop by here! The loco moco here was great and authentic. The macadamia nut pancakes are huge and can feed multiple people. Service was fast and attentive. The only downside is cash only.

Food is always amazing. Service is always great. Ambiance is always aloha vibes. Every time we come back home to Hawaii we make a stop here. Often times in the morning there is a wait line. Get there early.

We found out about this restaurant in Hilo, then found out that this one was the main one. Negatives: -none Positives: -prices/value, the amount of food they give you is well worth the price and more. Everything on the big island is bigger. Definitely the Texas of the islands. -taste, everything we got was good. The item worth mentioning the most was the galbi. Definitely one of the best I've had. My wife loved it so much we demanded we get it again for our last day on the big island. -service, service was exceptionally friendly. We definitely felt the aloha spirit. Overall 5/5 Thank you for providing us with an amazing experience and exceptional food.

Have the hours changed? We went by there today 9/7/21 at 1:00pm hoping to enjoy good food and the cafe was closed.

I'm not sure I'd trust their website during COVID. I would try to get there earlier as their breakfast is the bomb.

Do they serve breakfast all day (during business hours)?

Only till closing which is 1-2

Any forecast on when you are reopening? I see a lot of hard work being done in the restaurant. Mahalo nui loa.

They are currently open, but just for breakfast and lunch Monday-Friday and closed on weekends.

    Is it closed?

It's open, but limited hours for breakfast and lunch. No dinner service and closed on weekends.

Does the fried rice have any meat?

    Yes, it has pork.

Is Poi still on the menu?

    Yes

About how long is the wait to be seated on weekday mornings?

We only waited like 15-20 minutes. We also had a rather large party.

I was so looking forward to dining on delicious BBQ . we had to order our meals as take out online because of young children , so we looked to order at 4:30 pm . so i went online and believe it or not I was incredulous that they were sold out of Every single BBQed Dish pork, chicken, ribs etc I was so disappointed and in disbelief That I called the restaurant and sure enough it was true! shocking for a BBQ RESTAURANT to run out of BBQ! because our hearts were set on having their food , so burgers were ordered by the family and i ordered the ONO grilled with a side of cole slaw and grilled pineapple, and O NO the fish was so tough it was difficult to cut with a knife... it was tastless and chewy ... threw away half of it ! It was not the fresh Ono I expected and love! hopefully this does not happen often !!! I understand that Restaurants have an off night sometimes ... but this was SO SAD !!! in addition there was something (maybe a spice or something on the grill ) on either the fish and/or the pineapple , that I had an allergic reaction to ! my tongue swelled and was extremely uncomfortable!!! I have never had that happen before... it is sad that the cornbread and the coleslaw were the best part if the meal! The burgers were enjoyed so that boosted my score !

However, as a vegetarian, I felt like we really just had one option for our entrée. We ended up getting full off starters and sides. The only main we could really do was the mushroom pot pie. It was good and comforting, just not anything super memorable. Lastly, I don't mind spending on a nice meal, but a few things felt a little pricey for what they were. For example, the tomato and blue cheese salad with capers was $25, which felt a little steep for essentially five slices of tomato. That being said, everything tasted very fresh and the quality of ingredients was definitely there. Overall, still a good experience, especially because of the service.

They have a TV showing historical clips of the Japanese immigrants who moved to Hawaii. We learned so much just dining there! The servers were very nice and friendly. They even offer free, hot green tea. It wasn't crowded when we went there for lunch. The server said we could order from the dinner menu too. The restaurant is decorated with a bunch of old family photos. It's not a fancy food location, but a place that is in the locals' hearts. Also, it's not standard Japanese American food, so don't come in looking for rolls and such! Instead, they serve fresh, perfectly prepared Japanese food with a Hawaiian twist, favorites like saimin and shrimp tempura. The large saimin ($16.17) was delicious and really hit the spot. Toppings were Spam, eggs, and veggies. Simple, but tasty! Shrimp tempura appetizer ($14.85) was a pretty large sized dish. The pieces have a lot of crunchy batter and the kids loved it. It was a bit greasy, but that's to be expected. DH got a Oyako Donburi with sashimi ($21.93). Wow, the sashimi was truly amazing! So tender, it just melts in your mouth. The eggs were cooked with bamboo pieces which kinda threw DH off. I liked them, but DH would've preferred it without. The flavor is sweet/salty and pretty mild. It came with miso soup and some pickles. Parking is right in the front and backs into the main road. It can be spicy getting out if traffic is heavy. They don't have a lot of bathrooms, so there might be a wait. Those are the downsides. Otherwise, a wonderful local place to eat!

I got the No. 3 Teishoko which comes with Miso Soup, Sashimi, Sukiyaki, Shrimp Tempura, Sunomono, Tsukenomo, and Rice. The tuna was so smooth and melts in your mouth. And I loved the flavor of the pairing of pickled vegetables with the sukiyaki (flavorful and tender). I do wish the shrimp tempura had a little more shrimp and less tempura batter though. Also, we didn't realize that our waitress was the great granddaughter of Grandma Teshima herself. She was so nice to us during our visit! I would recommend checking out this restaurant. Looking forward to trying out their breakfast the next time we come back!
