First off, when you're very familiar with Zippy's and your husband happens to be a former Zippy's employee back in his hanabata days , you can't help but chuckle at the name Ippy's. I know it's not a spin off and is actually named after the owner, but still... kinda funny to me and my husband. We came in right at the start of dinner, so the restaurant wasn't busy yet. It was nice being able to take our time looking through the menu, placing our order, and finding a table before the dinner rush came in. One of the evening specials was a surf and turf with steak, grilled fish, and fried shrimp. Yes, two please! We also ordered teri chicken with fries and mac salad, along with a large bowl of saimin. Let's start with the saimin. The dashi tasted a little watered down while somehow still being salty. I'm not sure if some of that saltiness was coming from the meats, but that's how it hit. The noodles had a nice chew, and the kamaboko and char siu were lovely. The spam, however, was disappointing. One side was nearly burnt, almost like somebody forgot it was hanging out on the flat top. Thankfully, that almost bitter burnt flavor didn't make its way into the dashi. The teri chicken was mid. Nothing particularly memorable. The fries were definitely the frozen variety and didn't feel loved at all. Our friend barely touched them, and she enjoys fries, so that says something. The mac salad made up for the fries tho bc she smashed that. As for the two surf and turfs, the steak wasn't too bad but could've used a little more seasoning. The grilled fish was a very lean white fish and unfortunately was overcooked and dry. The fried shrimp was crispy, but there really wasn't much more to say about it beyond that. Now, some flowers need to go to the sistah working the counter. She was incredibly friendly and patient with us while we ordered. Once the dinner rush started picking up, sis was ZOOMING between the register, delivering food to tables, and bussing whenever she had a chance. She was working her 'ōkole off while still being pleasant with everyone. Definitely appreciated her! Would I come back? Sure, why not. While there's nothing we ate that evening that got me thinking, I need to come back for this, there's enough on the menu that I'd be willing to explore a little more. I love Ippy's so much. The food is always amazing, especially the pork belly. I like that you can get a "mini" plate for kids. My daughter loves the chicken katsu. They're also so kind to us. We sat and ate in the restaurant and they gave my daughter a big bag of toys to play with while we were there. It kept her entertained while we waited for our food and also made it easier to feed her. The restaurant itself has a ton of space and is always clean. We can always get a table there, so I don't mind sitting and eating instead of feeling like I need to get takeout. read more

My wife and I drove up to Ippy's in Waimea from Waikoloa while on vacation since we were in the mood for real Hawaiian barbecue, and this spot is an absolute gem! The exterior, and interior, of the building is nothing special. As a matter of fact, that's part of what I loved about it; it helps you realize it's an all around fantastic food joint, not just somewhere that charges overpriced amounts for average food because of the "vibe." It's extremely busy inside this place, and staff was extremely friendly and pretty quick with turning out orders. I ordered a two entree plate, which consisted of their teriyaki chicken and pina colada shrimp, per the recommendation of the woman taking my order. The shrimp was incredible and the pins colada sauce that it comes with it's something I now dream about! The chicken was also great. It's dark meat, which is something to keep in mind in case you're a pickier eater, but the char and flavor of it was wonderful. For the sides I ordered rice and their mac salad. I'm not usually a mac salad kind of guy, but this changed my mind and I can now say I'm a true fan. Being that we all paid separately, it made sense to place our order and pay at the counter. It's a small dining room, about 12 tables maybe, sits 4-6, but with the ceiling to floor glass windows, it was very lighted and felt spacious. Became a fan of Ippy's after trying his old restaurant in Waikoloa. Also had a catered dinner by him previously at Anna Ranch, and his food is always amazing! The kalbi (spicy glaze) were moist with tons of meaty flavor. The green salad and rice helped to cut some of the meat richness too. The garlic shrimp also shined through since they weren't slathered with sauce and you could appreciate the shrimp itself. My husband said the katsu was the best he's ever tried. Both l are unbelievably good. They prepared the Korean pork similar to kalbi short ribs but it's more tender than the latter. My husband and I shared: - Sweet Grilled Kalbi Short Ribs with Rice and Mac Salad - Mixed Plate with Furikake Beer Battered Mahi Mahi, Korean Pork, Fries, and Pineapple Coleslaw - Orange Bang - Best Maid Unicorn Crispy Bar The meats are where this spot really shines. My favorite was the Korean Pork. I always love Kalbi Ribs, but they're a bit chewier in texture. The Korean Pork had a similar flavor, but it was easier to eat. I also prefer to be able to get the mixed plate, so I'd skip the Kalbi Ribs next time. I also really enjoyed the Mahi Mahi. I was a bit disappointed by the sides. The coleslaw had no flavor. The Mac Salad was just ok. Crinkle cut fries aren't my favorite. The rice was a good pairing with the meats. I've never seen or heard of Orange Bang before, but trust me when I tell you that you need to try it. It's fantastic. I look forward to coming back next time I visit the big island! read more

OMG this was SUCH an amazing idea to stop here. We were starving after zip lining and tried stoping at another bbq place but they were closed so we found Ippy's. Wow. The place looks clean and tidy and I like how get all the windows so you can see the mountain or watch the cars drive by! And sorry but we never take before pictures. Amazing food and service wow! Straight from the bat, Ana, the attentive cashier/server/jack of all trades, had a warm, welcoming personality. She asked us if we had any questions on the menu and happily waited while my fiancé and I discussed what we wanted (in great detail lol). This is a good local place. I think we were the only visitors. They have a lot of good options and I was very happy with mines. I got the kalbi with spicy sauce. The Teri beef sandwich was very yummy. The saimen was on to me but my husband loved it. Small and perfect for a child. I am not saying anything but he ordered a small and got small. Our friend got the pork belly and it was in like a vinegar red onion and tomatoes salsa. It was pretty good I tried a few pieces. I like the history of this chef owner.
