The food is fine, but over priced ($25 per entree) for the quality, but that is not what I am complaining about in this review. I placed an order over the phone for pick-up. The employee I spoke to asked me if I wanted to pay, and I said "can i pay with my card when I pick it up?" He said "yes" I arrived and presented my AMEX card and he told me that they didn't take American Express. That's fine if an establishment doesn't take AMEX, but if I call you and tell you I am going to pay with a card(not disclosing what type), you need to inform me that AMEX is not accepted. At the end of the day, it's in the establishments best interest to disclose this to new customers (like me) because for people who don't carry around other cards ( mind you, in a metropolitan area) are going to have no choice but to leave and the restaurant is going to have to figure out how to deal with the food that the customer ordered, that was prepared and now will have to be thrown out. If we were in some small 3,000 person town in the middle of nowhere, than yeah it's on the customer to make sure that an AMEX card is accepted, but in a city, like Chicago, the merchant needs to disclose that before hand. read more

I live a couple blocks away but ordered for delivery when this was DOC pizza. Good pizza but place came up on yelp as Himmel's so decided to try it out. Felt a little awkward walking in. Felt underdressed but no one made me feel that way but me. Seated promptly. Appetizers out quickly which was nice considering it appeared to be a full house. Main course shortly after appetizers finished. Good timing for everything and my favorite part other than my Obatzda and Kasespatzle was the music. The experience was a good one. Only thing that kept this restaurant from a 5 Stars was the delay at the end. Delay to refill my dates water and a bit of a delay on getting our check. Still gave a good tip though because the food and entertainment was worth it! Oh, and the tiramisu... wow! Forget about buying a shot of rum! Not needed if you get this as your dessert. As you wait for over an hour for your simple Chicken Parmisiana, and the chef seems to be doing percussion for her cousin's acoustic warbles, you may come to understand, as I did, just how ITALIAN-GERMAN cuisine works: bland attempts at comfort food while they delight in your misery. Waitstaff look miserable, and you would too, if you were forced to wear a trendy TOP KNOT. Someone please inform the chef that pasta and seafood do not cook at the same rate and when you try that, you get rubbery scallops and pasta that is stuck together. This is one of those situations where my wife and I got burned bad by Yelp. Himmel's (formally Pizza DOC) was on every level a complete suckfest! It was an epic fail on every level. There are ways to compensate when one area of the dinning experience is lacking. If the kitchen is slow, friendly wait staff helps. If the food is BAD, fill them up on bread. When the house musician is singing "The waiting is the hardest part" by Tom Petty after waiting over an hour to get your meal? It's not what you want to hear. Hell it took ten minutes just to get our first drink order. So maybe this is the kind of place where you want to just kick back, relax and enjoy your dinner? That would be fine if the food was actually good. I ordered the Linguini fruti del Mare. It was. The worst serving of that dish I have ever had. The pasta was so under cooked that the end were sticking together. The shellfish was so over cooked that is was rubbery. The sauce was so bland and lifeless it tasted like the flat ass wine we waited for. My wife ordered the Chicken Parmesan. It was so flat it looked like one of their pizzas. The side of green beans did not even have snapped ends. Again. Bland and flat. My food was so bad I could not even finish it. After placing my paper napkin in the bowl. It took 15 minuets for someone to clear the plate off the table. It felt like the server didn't want us there at all. But we simply asked for the check, paid,and left. Our server asked if we wanted our leftovers. Um..... No. Two words for Himmel's. Bland and Flat. It was so bad I'm thinking that Lincoln Square is just a bad neighborhood for food. Great schnitzels, and they are massive! The chicken ones, at least. Veal Wiener Schnitzel was very good. Spaetzel are fantastic. Very good chicken parmesan. Rosti potatoes are amazing. The house salad dressing completely lacks ANY flavor, a lot of room for improvement there. Prices are pretty good, especially for the neighborhood. They could stand to expand the schnitzel offerings to include Cordon Blue, Paprika schnitzel and ziguener schnitzel, as these don't require much additional prep. They also have the entertainer guy from the old Chicago Brauhaus, which is nice. We will be back!! read more

This place really is a divine little gem where you might not expect to find it. On Lawrence a block or two east of Lincoln Square, Himmel's is easy to overlook if you don't know it's there and it's not the typical place you might stumble past walking down the street. Former Lincoln Square residents like myself might remember it when it used to be called Pizza D.O.C. Same great ownership, same great service and same amazing food with a few spectacular additions. The interior is warm and inviting. Lots of red and brick, great art on the wall. The brick oven is exposed to the dining area which adds a nice little touch. Full service bar. Most nights when I've been there have been live musicians and they're actually worth listening too. Ok now the food. I can't say enough about the spaghetti and meatballs. Usually I won't get spaghetti when I go out because I can make a mean spaghetti myself, but I was in the mood for meatballs. Holy MEATBALLS. A foodgasm. The pizza there is also divine. The german dishes are darn good too. The kasespatzle is not too shabby either. German and Italian, sounds strange but they make it work. Absolutely perfect place for a date! read more

I loved Pizza DOC. When it closed, my Husband and I were devastated. Then, the same family opened Himmel's. A German/Italian restaurant? Might sound odd, but IT WORKS, and works WELL. They've kept the pizza oven & continue to have the great Italian favorites from DOC. My favorites are the pizza (same quality as before, which is FANTASTIC), the spaghetti carbonara, and the gnocchi. The German fare is great too! In a prior review I stated some issues w/customer service on one night that left a VERY sour taste in my & several friends mouths. I even stayed away for awhile. But the carbonara & pizza kept calling to me & I couldn't be denied!! I've been back twice since then, and the food AND customer service were fabulous. We've actually not been to Himmel's for a sit-down meal since it was Pizza DOC, so I cannot comment on the service (which seems to be where a lot of the more critical issues are, according to fellow Yelpers). However, I'll say that delivery is stellar and to date I've not had a bad experience. Let me add to this by saying when ordering food for delivery in general, I am strategic. For example, even if a place is super close (e.g. Himmel's) I tend to not order anything fried or time-sensitive. So, although Himmel's pizza looks awesome, we abstained. Instead, we stuck with their pasta carbonara (never had before), spaghetti with meatballs (have had a few times), and pear & gorgonzola salad (favorite!) All arrived 35 minutes before the estimated delivery time, piping hot (no exaggeration), and really delicious. The pear and gorgonzola salad was as fresh as always; if you've never had this combination of flavors I'd highly recommend it. I always add some salt and fresh pepper, and go easy on the dressing (just a basic olive oil and vinegar) and it's just perfect; a little sweet, a little savory, a lot of awesome. The spaghetti and meatballs are consistently well done; the spaghetti is never overcooked, the meatballs are really tender and flavorful. Note: the sauce that its served with is a bit spicy, so if this isn't your thing, just keep that in mind for your stomach's sake. Recently we tried their spaghetti carbonara for the first time and it did not disappoint. Much like the spaghetti and meatballs, the pasta was cooked really well, the sauce was dreamy. I'm not even a huge carbonara fan and would order this myself in the future if the craving arose. Simply, Himmel's may have changed up their name/menu to reflect a German influence, but it remains a great go-to for delivered Italian favorites. So, if you're in the mood for pasta and think you have to get dolled up and go out, think again! read more

while the name is german, italian takes the front seat. but the experience is pleasing by any standards! and i'm obviously not the only one who thinks so. the place is routinely busy, even in what i consider a low traffic area. but not too busy where you have to wait for a table or the service suffers. --fresh bread with olive oil and fresh parmesan. and they keep it comin'. --definitely order the bruschetta- you won't regret it. i wanted to lick every one of those sweet, sweet tomatoes from the plate. --arugula salad. there's not much going on here, but really do you need to mess with arugula? just gimme a big ol' heaping plate and i'm happy. and that's exactly what this is. --the mussels were big and tender. cooked to perfection. and i seem to be eating a lot of mussels lately. --the gnocchi was actually not my favorite (of the evening or of gnocchis). BUT- the last time we were here i had the bolognese, which i still think about (translation: crave) every once in a while. it was kind of amazing. i also still think about the malbec i drank that night. so i guess they have a good wine list. with twinkle lights all around and a guy with a guitar gently strumming pop songs, the atmosphere is warm and inviting. the noise level is somehow just right... you can hear the music, and there is a buzz of conversation, but you don't need to shout to your dinner partner nor worry about being overheard by the table next to you. what put it over the top for me was when the bill came and it was LESS than i thought it would be. that never happens! we shared everything, but there was plenty and we even had leftovers. so we basically just had a 4-course meal with 2 drinks each for $33 per person. for the quality and the portion size that's a heck of a deal. read more

I've recently been looking for the best Neapolitan style pizza in the city, Himmel's comes up short. The atmosphere is a bit lacking, lights are too bright and there is just a general lack of attentiveness by the wait staff. It took 15 min for the waitress to bring us water. Another 10 min for her to come back with a menu and ask if we wanted to place a drink order. She did apologize, but it was a Friday night with only about 25% of the restaurant full, you can do better than that. The other 2 waitresses on staff we just sitting at the other empty tables just looking at their phones. A bit odd. We ordered an appetizer, but our waitress forgot to put the order in, which she again apologized for. They do have bread that they serve at the table, so that did help hold us over while waiting. As for the pizza, it was just ok. My fiance and I both ordered our own pizza's, both with fresh tomatoes on them, but both came out with rather cold tomatoes that were just placed on top of the pizza after it had come out of the oven. Crust was good, but that was about all. Nothing special about the cheese or sauce. All in all, very poor experience, we won't be back. I would recommend Coalfire, which has great food and amazing service, or Nella's, also very good! read more

I recently joined some friends for dinner at Himmel's, and we really enjoyed it! The restaurant is warm and inviting, and the staff was really lovely. I didn't know this restaurant (or its predecessor) was here, but I am so glad I'm aware of it now. Apparently a couple of sisters bought the pizza restaurant this used to be, and decided they were two German girls so they wanted to change the focus to reflect their heritage a bit more (we got to talk to one of them, and she could not have been any nicer!). So they still have pizzas and a few Italian dishes on the menu, but have also added some schnitzels and whatnot. I tried one of the schnitzels and I really enjoyed it. I was really pretty perfect - for something fried, it was pretty light and not at all greasy. I would definitely get it again. My friends were equally pleased with their dishes - we all agreed that this is a place to visit again. read more

I wrote a raving review about Himmel's back when it was Pizza D.O.C. I figured it was time to write another review since I got married on May 16th and had my wedding reception there. We chose Himmel's since it was where we ate on our 1st date and has become a regular spot for us ever since. It was amazing. They made sure that everything went off without a hitch. They bent over backwards to make sure we had anything and everything we needed for our special day. The service was perfect. All our guest raved about how fantastic the food was. We, of course, have always thought the food is fantastic. My husband is a very picky eater and loves many of the dishes at Himmel's. They were even able to accomodate some special food needs for some of our guests. All our guests had a great time! We just can't say enough good things about Himmel's. They are and will always be a part of our lives. They are like family to us. Go to himmel's. You won't be disappointed. read more

Himmels's has it in the bag for a specialized experience. Everything is exactly one half German, one half Italian. You probably won't find this mashup anywhere else in the city so go for it! You've got the German style exterior, with the Old English style font of the sign and the heavy stone, as well as some old style looking murals on the inside walls. But then you have pure Tuscany, with the warm wood tones, mustard yellow walls, and grapes hanging from the ceiling. The menu is just as extreme, with Bucatini all'Amatriciana - (Onion, guanciale (smoked Italian bacon), extra virgin olive oil, spicy tomato sauce, Parmigiano & Romano cheese, which is what I had and was incredible) alongside of Wiener Schnitzel - (Pan fried breaded veal scaloppine, served with red cabbage and potatoes which is what my date had and was equally as incredible). I don't know how you do it Himmels, but keep it up! I normally don't like mashups but you guys know how to make it happen in a fantastic way. read more

Wasn't really sure what to think of this place as German/Italian fusion is not too common. I guess the owners inherited an amazing wood-burning oven and the pizza connoisseur of our family approved heartily--our six year old wolfed down and entire small pizza while my husband and I tried two entrees. We missed the fabled pork shank as it is only served on weekends, but the Champignon Rahm Schnitzel was quite good and the sauce very delicious. The red cabbage served with it had the perfect tang and crunch. The steak was very good and grilled nicely but for the price the frozen fries and pathetic vegetables it came with did not quite live up. The atmosphere was quite cozy what with the woodburning stove crackling merrily and some guitar strummer unobtrusively adding a little background music that allowed us to relax and enjoy a meal with our son without living in terror that he might speak too loudly and annoy those of the children-should-be-neither-seen-nor-heard-anywhere camp. I guess the beer selection is not to extensive, so if that's your main point it might be a disappointment. Will come back to try another pizza and the pork shank. read more

This restaurant seemed to be having an identity crisis. It looked like a German restaurant, but the majority of the dishes were Italian. Although I would totally be down for a European fusion restaurant, this concept did not really seem to work. I ordered a vegetarian pizza, which was good at the edges, but far too mushy in the middle, and my husband ordered the Bavarian Pork Shank. He enjoyed the meal; however, he said the entire dish was too salty. Our friends ordered the Chicken Schintzel, which looked great, and was sized for two, but the sides didn't seem to complement the meal well enough. They received a small cabbage salad, but no spaetzle, lingenberry sauce, sauerkraut, or anything like that. Three people in our party wanted to have German for dinner and three people wanted to have Italian. I decided the best solution was to try Himmel's because they have both German and Italian specilaties. Everyone was very happy with all of their food and wine selections. I had the "Braccio di Ferro", chicken breast flattened and rolled with spinach. It was a big portion with mashed potatoes and green beans and was excellent (and enough for two dinners). My sister loved her chicken parmigiana, husband loved the pork shank, mom loved the homemade spatzle, dad loved the pork tenderloin medallions, and son loved the spaghetti and meatballs from the kids menu. Good food, prices are the same or less than the german and italian restaurants in the square (which are good too), and a good option if you want a selection of both options in one place. read more

We were seated at a table and we waited, and waited, and waited, waiters scurrying all around us, and no one even bothered to acknowledge our presence. Came on a Friday night and the place was busy, but comfortable. We didn't have to wait and service was good. They also had an excellent singer who also played guitar. The bar area is very nice and near the live music. I ordered the salmon, which came with vegetables and mashed potatoes. Everything was disgustingly drenched in butter. It seemed liked they plated the food and then ladled butter over it. Too bad since the salmon looked like a quality piece of fish. Our arugula pizza was OK. The ingredients seemed fresh, but the crust was undercooked for my taste. I personally prefer it to be at least slightly crispy. We went on Sat night at 7:30pm with reservaand there were two big parties there, so my only gripe was we waited for our entrees a *tad* too long, but our lovely server provided a round of free schnapps at the end of the meal (and did one herself). I don't think you should offer pizza for delivery. I ordered on grubhub and while the pizza came fast it was cold on arrival. I can order pizza from Sarpino's and have it here hotter than what arrived from Himmels (same distance). And a margherita pizza is supposed to be mozzarella cheese, the fresh kind, and some times freshly sliced tomatoes and basil, not a cheese pizza! Sorry, that's not pizza margherita. Finally, the signature Pear and Gorgonzola salad is delicious but there's a dollop of what seems to be butter, or overchurned cheese in each order. It doesn't really go with the salad unless you are going to offer bread with it...a little harsh but when you order each time and it's good money and poor quality, it's disappointing. Overall, I would not order from here if you are anticipating high quality pizza. read more

Discovered Himmel's through Open Table and decided to take myself for a late lunch/early dinner. Once situated at the bar, the bar tender was friendly and talkative and gave me the perfect amount of attention - not too much and not too little. Ordered the pasta carbonara after seeing the photos on Yelp and it was delicious!! A considerable serving made with Italian bacon (OMG!), EVOO and white wine and cheese!!! Paired with a glass of red, this was an indulgent dinner! I love that they make German and Italian food - you'd probably never run out of options. This was a wonderful treat (and very affordable). Since I went in very early (around 5pm), I don't know if you need a reservation but quite a few parties came in after me. First time here and have to agree with some of the other recent reviews. The food was good but the service was very bad. We waited way too long for each course, spending almost 3 hours total for dinner. The bus-girl spilled olive oil on one of our guests while clearing plates and we could not get the attention of anyone else for at least 20 minutes. When the waitress finally returned, her solution was to bring a bowl of flour and spread it all over the guest's sleeves with a 'just wash it later'. You could tell that the chef's friends were seated towards the front and served most efficiently (with chef hugs all around), having come and gone before we even got our entrees. Man, I really like Himmel's pizza but I've order it for delivery twice now and twice it's showed up COLD. Seriously? I know my lazy arse should just go pick up the pizza but isn't that point of delivery? When you are feeling lazy and just can't be bothered with going out...delivery options are your friend. I will say the pizza was good - after I heated it up. FYI - the secret to re-warming pizza is to do it in the frying pan. Anyhow, I've also tried calamari...it claims to be fried on the menu but what I got was a lightly breaded and possibly pan fried calamari. Still totally edible, just not what I was expecting. Himmel's also has this mushroom soup that I'm sort of in love with. It's minced portobello mushroom in a veggie broth, garnished with guanciale and parsley oil. How can you not love anything garnished with bacon? The menu is quite varied and just sort of all over the place. It's been quite a while since I visited "the restaurant formerly known as Pizza DOC," mainly because the food (especially the pizza) seemed to take a nose-dive after the new proprietors took over. However, I noticed that Himmel's was getting favorable reviews, so recently gave it a try. The German/Italian menu is novel in concept, featuring standards from each cuisine. The wine list is all-Italian, with an acceptable array of choices. I was surprised the beer menu didn't offer a broader array of German beers. VIBE: Less trattoria-ish, more German beer hall. Comfortable enough, if not cozy. Conversation was possible, even in the face of live entertainment the night we visited. SERVICE: Our server was friendly and helpful, and filled us in on what had changed since Pizza DOC became Himmel's. LIKED: The meat on the Champignon Rahm Schnitzel entrée and the Sauerbraten was good, as was the red cabbage, though neither was remarkable. A tri-color salad was also OK. DISLIKED: The spätzle served with both entrées was dry & lifeless; we assumed it was pre-cooked and had been sitting around for a while. Lots of it, though... We have been coming to Himmel's for years. Cozy, German comfort food with a local crowd. It's been a go to place for us. Tonight was the first time we were charged for soft drink refills. Our waitress told us this is a new thing, ownership started it within the past two weeks but didn't offer a reason why. We enjoyed our meal and paid the tab, but were turned off. If this was our first visit and they charged for soft drink refills, we would not likely be back as it feels like a low blow in customer service. I also wonder what is going on with Himmel's management that they need to charge $2/glass for soda water. Bummer. read more

Been driving by forever and finally had a night for a nice leisurely dinner. The bread with olive oil and parm cheese was very good to start. I had the spinach gnocchi with cheese sauce. Was amazingly delicious and decadent. This could make my list of "last meal requests" if every I had to pick. On a weeknight, the place isn't crowded so it's a nice place for a dinner where you want to take your time. There was live music, which was a nice touch. I remember this place having a little more atmosphere when it was the Italian place. It was a good place to go on a date. Seemed more dim and a little more romantic. The night I went it was kind of overly bright and they have the big TVs on with sports playing. So while it's a place for a fantastic leisurely meal, if you're looking to impress someone with atmosphere, this wouldn't be my top pick. I do see they're on GrubHub, so could be ideal for a treat at home. Gnocchi might go into my regular rotation. read more

On the whole, this was a confusing dinner experience. The menu is a mix of Italian and German, which do not go together. The crowd was a mix: oldsters, youngsters, hipsters, men in suits, red-faced old-money types, hippies, and slobs. Even the service was a mix: we had three different waitresses throughout the meal. Also, depending on where you sit, you might have a quiet zone or be surrounded by cacklers. My girlfriend got the pork shank, which was excellent although quite fatty, as you might expect. I got the trout special, which was pretty good. The house salad was above average due to the refreshing (verging on bracing) dressing. If they could figure out the service part, this could be a 4 or 5 star place. Our waitress (well, number three out of three) told us that there was no ownership change; the owners renamed the place from Pizza DOC and added German items to the menu because they were German and wanted to honor their heritage. Back in the day (last year!), when it was DOC, we waited 20 minutes to be served but then had a great meal. So I guess it makes sense that it's the same owners. read more

Coming from a restaurant background, im usually pretty particular about restaurants. I went to Himmel's last week for a social distancing dinner and left a huge fan. We were seated outside in the back under a big umbrella. We had the owner Carol prepare for us her chef special and it was delicious. We started with a salad, then a combo type platter for our dinner. Schnitzel, spätzle, red cabbage...OMG... best ive ever had. Not to forget that they serve pretzel bread with your meal. To finish the dinner with pretzel bread -bread pudding, with caramel sauce. Ive only had German food a couple times in the past, but I will be back and will be bringing my Greek Family. Everything was on point. The service was great, always near to attend to our needs, the food, outstanding and the hospitality was like being at your favorite relatives house. When the Brauhaus closed I thought well, there goes the neighborhood for German food. I was wrong! The moment I walked in, I felt welcome. The minute I took my first bite of the chicken schnitzel, I felt at home. It is by far one of the best I have ever tasted. Steve was our server and was very attentive to our requests. The owners Diane and Linda were there and grew up in the neighborhood as I did. We shared several good stories and I decided that this is my new place for good German food.
