Ok, I came here for lunch with my brother, niece, and father. For some reason my father has been raving about this place and claims it's one of his favorites, and my brother said it was pretty good. I haven't been here before as I now only occasionally visit the bay area.....so ok, lets give this lunchtime buffet a try. A very typical small and minimally decorated casual restaurant ....one of those places you supposedly go to for the food and not the ambiance. By 12pm the places has already filled up, but we managed to get seated at one of the two tables still available. Before we even sit down at the table we're already in line at the buffet to start piling up our plates. They have the usual spread of dry and curried items, and salad/fruits/desserts. My eyes scanned the whole buffet table looking for my favorite Saag Paneer, but there was none to be found....bummer! I knew enough to be very careful what to pick as you fill up very fast on this food...and the free naan breads which are brought to your table later. Ok, I'm not sure what the hooha is about this place, but I thought the food was only slightly above average compared to the many I've tried in the bay area over the years. The chicken kebab was the most disappointing being really dry....where I had to dip it in the daal (lentil curry) just to get it moist. The Tandoori Chicken wasn't too bad....at least it was moist and tender. The bread was good and fresh out of the oven. But man!.....shortly after we had say down to start eating, the buffet line grew so long inside the restaurant....by people who had just walked in and not even seated at a table yet! What's even more surprising was the crowd waiting outside the doors waiting to get in. What?!?! Really?! When I mentioned how surprised I was with the crowd here given the average quality of the food, my brother did admit that today wasn't up to their usual standard and he too was a bit disappointed today. My father paid for our lunch today and I heard the buffet cost $11.99 per person..... woooow, I thought! Ordered for take out since the place was extremely crowded with long wait lines - but they seemed to have a quick service and turnaround. I ordered the chicken momos, chilli chicken, spicy naan, and chicken Manchurian. Loved everything else but not the manchurian- it had no gravy and was more like chicken dumplings with asian sauce. Also not: it doesn't not come with rice so you need to order extra. I would have given 4 stars, but they did not include the momos sauce (which is kind of the main thing with momos) and also forgot the tamarind sauce I asked for. read more

Who should go? Anyone craving for authentic Indian flavours. Seating capacity is relatively small. My guess around 40-50 people. And it gets really busy. So plan accordingly. This is not a fine dining place, but it is clean and hygienic. It can get loud in there. Food is great. My major complaint with several Indian restaurants is that they make Indian dishes too mild and creamy to cater to a particular group. But this place preserves the authentic Indian flavours. Here are the items we ordered 1. Hyderabadi chicken dum Biriyani ( delicious level take home left over. My husband never takes home food. But he did this one. One order sufficient for two people if there are other orders.) 2. Onion Masala Dosa: great chutney. Although not traditionally South Indian. Delicious sambhar. Not watery. Very well balanced. 3. Butter paneer. This is for people for like shahi paneer on sweeter side. ( delicious level, super satisfied guests). 4. Naan(butter): fluffy, soft, very well cooked. 5. Gulab jamun. I did not taste it but my friend said "decent" 6. Mango lassi. Decently flavourful given the kind of mangoes that are available in US. 7. Gobi manchurian: I will call it spicy. People who can't tolerate spicy will cry; those who like spicy will enjoy. All in all very satiating Indian food experience. read more

Not sure why this place only has 3.5 stars; the food is phenomenal, truly authentic and hits the spot each time. It's hard to find a great Himalayan restaurant and this one far far exceeds all the ones II've tried, including the ones in San Francisco. It's not a fancy place but they have renovated the place recently. Service is attentive and did I mention, how phenomenal the food (and prices) are? Do yourself a favor and go eat there. I ordered a spicy Andhra uttapam today and all I got is unfermented thick hard sheet of dosa which was not chewable at all. The batter lacked salt and tasted so dry. I was charged $8.99 for this piece of crap. If the food is not up to the standard you should not give it to your customers. Such a horrible dosa I have had so far in Bay Area. This place is not great. They didn't take a lot of the care in preparing the food. My order was mixed up and instead of apologizing he saved face in front of the other customers and told me I didn't know the difference between chicken and paneer. The order was supposed to contain vegetables . My original and replacement order had very little vegetables. They don't seem to be concerned with writing down the distinct differences between their dishes. There isn't much to the dishes so I'm not sure it matters anyway. The flavor was okay. The worst or one of the worst place I have ever been to. Yelp users please think before you rate. We went their due to high rating. It was a mess!! Food spilled all over the buffet the server was making me puke that's how not so hygienic he was. All the kitchen staff wears black aprons full of food spatters takes your appetite away as they freely roam around the restaurant like a moose in the pastures. We asked for naan it came after fifteen minutes. They could find tea for us. We asked for a couple of other items and no one came back during the whole 35 minutes we were there. I have been a long term customer of Himalayan Kitchen. While I usually enjoy their Vijayawada Chicken biriyani, I have noticed a change over time. They seem to have increased the amount of rice in their biriyani and reduced the amount of meat. We had a large order of biriyani and it ended up being a large order of flavored rice. read more

Went to Himalayan Kitchen yesterday for dinner. We got seated right away since there weren't that many people there. However, we didn't get our water refilled even once. At the end of our meal, it seemed like they were unsure on who was serving at the time because each of them expected the other to give us the bill. The food here is pretty good and I always go here when I'm looking for a reliable and delicious chicken tikka masala. I have also gotten their naan, mango laasi, and samosas all which have been good but nothing outstanding. I also got another appetizer once (I don't remember what it was) but it was not good at all. However, my biggest hesitation is the service here. The service is terrible. It takes a long time to get food and you often have to call the waiters over in order to get your food, and they are not very friendly either. The environment of the restaurant can be very loud too- there's always TVs playing as well. The bathrooms are also a little messy as well. I would recommend this restaurant for the food itself rather than a nice place to dine in and enjoy your dinner. It would be much better for take out. read more

I've been here twice now and love the food. We ordered out both times so I can't comment on the service. My boyfriend got the goat biriyani which was flavorful, spicy but not too spicy, definitely enough for a meal and a half. There are bones in the goat by the way, so be careful if you're not used to that. My roommate who is originally from South India also highly recommends the biriyani. He prefers the chicken. He also usually get the samosa chaat and splits his biriyani to make two full meals. He loves this place so much he goes here once a week and says it has the best Indian food near us (in Palo Alto). I got the yellow daal and aloo gobi. Weirdly the aloo gobi has an incorrect description on the menu- it's described as a "noodle dish" but aloo gobi just literally means "potato cauliflower" which is what the dish is. It was a little oily for my taste but overall good. I loved the daal- the best yellow daal I've had this area for sure. My boyfriend also loved the daal. It was even better as leftovers the next day. I also got the gobi paratha to go with daal and aloo gobi which was pretty good. Overall, the food is just spiced really well and tastes like fairly authentic Indian food (according to my roommate). When I arrived they had a whole bunch of to go orders but check out was fast and my food was hot. I got the Butter Chicken and Butter Naan and oooh weee it did not disappoint! This place looks kinda drab and unassuming from the outside, but they have REALLY good food. Their biryanis are fantastic, and the value is amazing for the quantity you get, especially for a restaurant in the bay area. I often order one for takeout and have enough food 2-3 meals. Everything I've tried on their menu is fantastic, from the curries to the veggie dishes. Their biryanis are definitely my favorite, as they have a fantastic proportion of rice, spice, and fillings. Many biryanis I've had are kind of bland, since they don't have enough stuff in them, but these are absolutely the opposite. I'm always overwhelming with great flavor when I have them, and I rarely go there without ordering at least one for dinner, or at the very least takeout. They also have a good variety of desserts (gulab jamun, rasmalai, kheer, etc.) and sweet drinks, especially lassis. Although lassis are simple to make, they can vary widely in quality based on the ratios of yogurt, sugar, etc. that they use when they make it, as well as how they blend it. This place definitely has among the best lassis I've had at Indian restaurants (like, definitely top 3). They also have reasonable customer service. Even when they slightly messed up one of my takeout orders, they corrected it really quickly (within like a minute), and were really polite and professional. Usually I get really prompt, courteous service. But the fact that they handle hiccups well should be deserving of praise. Overall, they are really good as both a takeout place, and as a sit-down restaurant to bring everyone for really good food that doesn't break the bank. read more

Today the manager took half my order and hung up, then when I called back, he took down the rest of the order ( repeated it back to me) but said he couldn't take payment since he was "not near the register". Have been to this place several times for lunch buffet. Their buffet menu is quite good. It offers a nice selection of items in buffet : Upma, Vada, Biryani, Paneer, etc. The place also has quite decent indo chinese dishes. I have been there a few times at dinner times as well (non buffet), at which time I do not like the huge amount of food color it leaves on hands after eating their curry dishes.
