This was one of the best meals I've ever had.
The Hilltop Diner offers what my southern friends refer to as a "Meat and Three". You choose one meat and three sides. They also offer a Meat and Two for a dollar less. My friends say it's not authentic without a jar of Texas Pete's vinegar with peppers. There was on on each table.
The chicken was juicy, tender, and perfectly seasoned. The mustard greens were bright and earthy. Mac and cheese was cooked just al dente enough that it wasn't mushy. I sopped up the leftover sauce with the jalapeno cornbread.
The friend ocra was tasty, especially with the vinegar and the Sweet Tea wasn't too sweet.
I got some banana pudding to go and expected that this was where I'd be disappointed. I've had plenty bad banana puddings.
I was not prepared for the very best banana pudding of my life. No artificial banana flavoring here. And it had a light meringue folded in (Just fold it, David!) so you had these bites of fluffy heaven that kept it from being too heavy or sweet. I ate it in my car at a Buc ees, knowing nothing they offered could top it.
It's only open 11:00-2;00, so plan accordingling if you're driving through. Very affordable.
I will probably never return to this part of the US, but I'll remember this meal for the rest of my life. I wanted to make sure other people driving through town know to choose this instead of the chains nearby. read more
