Went in on a Saturday night about 8. Ordered a 14oz hamburger steak with gravy and onions. This was as a real hamburger steak and not one from a freezer. Probably one of the best I've had in several years. The side salad was simple but great and the loaded baked potato was hot and really good. I almost didn't want to stop here because of the bad reviews... I would call myself picky and like only freshly made sauces, etc. My husband and I decided to give it a try and I'm glad we did! We both got catfish and we also tried the green beans, tater tots with queso, baked potato and hush puppies. I will say that the hush puppies looked very dark so I was concerned that they were burned but they were so good! Did not taste burned at all. Catfish was breaded and fried perfectly. I had been craving their seafood for about a month now, so we get dressed to meet my son and his family here to get some. We drove 45 miles to this place because we like their food but as soon as we walk in the door, they were busy as usual and the lady at the register said how many, we said 7 plus a baby and before we could get the sentence finished, she interrupted and said we don't have it, (keep in mind this is about 6:45-7pm, nowhere close to closing time) and when we started to suggest we would wait she butts in AGAIN and say I'M SORRY WE DONT HAVE IT! So I turned and told the family we will just leave instead of waiting on one of the tables to open up. Needless to say, none of us will be back due to the rudeness of this lady because it cost us just to drive that far to take a chance on if she is in a bad mood or not. So unless you are there when they open and get one of the few tables that seat more than 6 ( a baby in our case) I would suggest calling to see if you are greeted nicely and have any tables available. read more

They were so busy that I would be kinda willing to forgive some mistakes and I do but you never ought to send out burnt onion rings and burnt hush puppies . The fries shouldn't land at the table cold either . Now the BBQ pork was real good and piping hot so I figure the fries had been just a left over batch that they put on the plate . The kid waiting our table was pretty efficient . I do wish he had noticed how dark the rings and puppies were though . They weren't just well done either . I can handle that . They were black and crunch crumble and if I wasn't so hungry I would have left them behind and avoided that terrible indigestion I got later in the night from dining on food like that . The ice tea was pretty good to be honest and the water came around to refill plenty of times. Despite all this critiquing I did like this place . Ordered family takeout, again extremely disappointed. Had grilled chicken salads, all we had was the core of a head of lettuce, cabbage, carrots, and egg. Seems they use the green of the lettuce for burgers. Each time we get this meal it's different, might be three dressings might be four, who know. Might have a pickle might not. One egg or two. Grilled chicken breast or grilled fingers. Steaks are a hit and miss as well, might be bleeding might be burnt. Absolutely no standard or monitoring of the food going out. Your treated like live-stock either on the phone or in the restaurant, no hospitality. Wish it could be better, I really would like to eat here more often... read more

Ate food from here multiple times when traveling through. I always try something different. Food tastes good and is much better than up the road at raceway or from in town at choke and puke. As long as cigarette smoke is kept out, I will continue to eat there. I hope business continues to pick up for the herrings. There is room for improvement at pickup window. Seems to always be some type of debris keeping me from getting closer. Pick up window is too high for elderly people trying to pay or receive food. Also, It is too dark inside at seating area. This restaurant is probably the 2nd best thing to happen here besides the new county school after the tornado came thru. Herrings need to build a big new gas station next to accommodate a small truck stop. A dollar general market would also be a good idea due to proximity of Hackleburg or go back to the roots and open up a meat shop like Ralph and Francis had.
