Great customer service and I greatly appreciate their accountability/ willingness to make up for our previous visit. Last night we started with the crab croquettes, STELLAR. Absolutely loved and devoured these. The crunch on the croquette was to die for, topped with a refreshing crab salad, perfect. For my entree, I had the lamb rack with house potatoes & broccolini. My boyfriend had the blackened catfish with the grits. Both dishes were phenomenal . To finish up we tried their new chocolate strawberry bread pudding, so rich and delicious. This restaurant is quickly becoming one of my favorite spots in Northern Alabama. Go give them a try! We'll 100% be back. read more

I'm disappointed to share this restaurant didn't really land for me. I came on Tuesday as I had the day off and I promised my mom we'd go on a mini road trip together. I'd had this spot on my list for a while and it seemed like the perfect fit, so off we went. Located in downtown Athens, we were able to find parking on the square, though we arrived at like 11:15 for an early lunch. To our surprise, the restaurant is connected via one door to U.G. White Mercantile, which we've visited before. They have cute gifts and such. The interior of the restaurant was fine; I remember reading about it and feeling like it didn't quite hit the fancier vibe the menu was bringing, but it was ultimately okay. I liked the exposed brick but didn't care for the straight line of paintings on the opposing wall. The health score posted was in the high 80s, which seems a little low for a restaurant of this caliber, but not a dealbreaker for me personally. Our server was nice enough but was also just adequate. Some of the other waiters helped ensure our drinks were always full, and she took a very long time between when we were actually done with our meal and when we got to pay, which was strange because it wasn't super busy. They have lunch specials that change daily, in addition to sandwiches/burgers and quite expensive entrees -- can't imagine ordering one of those for lunch but to each their own! Mom and I both decided on the fried chicken with chili honey for our meals; I wanna say it was $14, which is reasonable I feel for the food/atmosphere/service. I enjoyed the sweet tea to drink; mom said it was a little too sweet for her but if you're like me and enjoy some extra sweet tea this'll hit the spot. For our sides, I selected garlic mashed potatoes and added the crispy Brussels sprouts for an upcharge. Mom also got the mashed potatoes and she chose charred green beans as her second. The chicken we were served was a wing and I believe a deboned thigh. This is not at all my preference and I wish the menu had said what to expect. I also probably should've asked...but oh well. I will eat chicken thighs at least, but this one happened to be heavy on the qualities of a thigh I don't like -- lots of dark meat, and a sort of slippery/greasy quality. Meat aside, the breading didn't feel like it was super well bound to the chicken (ie, it sort of sloughed off) and didn't have much of a crunch, even the bits that didn't have the honey on it. The honey was fine but not very chili-forward (good for my mom, not so for me). I also thought the breading was not super flavorful. Lastly, the portion felt a little small for the price paid, but it is a lunchtime portion I suppose. The sides were fine. The garlic mashed potatoes were whipped super creamy; I like mine a little more rustic, with potato skin and chunks still in there. Unobjectionable but not remarkable. Mom's charred green beans were actually pretty good and probably my favorite thing I tasted here. The crispy Brussels were definitely crispy; however, most of them had fallen apart into individual leaves, which took on a sort of unpleasant charred quality and didn't provide much to bite into. The pearls of what I think was goat cheese were not particularly appreciated and, again, I wish this had been described on the menu. Didn't hate it, but could've done without it. All in all, I didn't hate it but it certainly didn't reach the high heights I was imagining/hoping for. If I were to return, I'd try a burger or pimento grilled cheese, or something else other than what I actually had. read more

We basically fell into this restaurant on a drive back home, and we wish it was in our own hometown! The ambiance is very nice and casual, with great music and a fantastic staff! Our server Stella was fantastic and very helpful. For dinner we had a hard time just picking one dish each but the portions were really good so only one dish was needed. We love the food at southern table and decided to try brunch there this time. Unfortunately didnt have the best experience this past weekend for brunch. The food was great but the service was lacking, we had to ask multiple times for coffees to be refilled, waitress took a while to get to us even though were the first group that sat down when the restaurant opened and there were few people in the restaurant only. Also the cake cutting fee for breakfast was a bit outrageous. They brought us the wrong drink we didnt ask for and still charged us for it. There was a service charge for the group except some checks had it and some didnt. read more

The food is absolutely spectacular! I had the trout (chef's pick of the day) and my husband had the steak -- both cooked to perfection. Pricing makes it more of a special-occasion spot rather than somewhere you'd go weekly or monthly. The atmosphere leans toward a hunting-lodge feel, which might be intentional, but it didn't quite match the "fine dining" experience I expected. The southern table will be one of our favorite restaurants ever. We had the charred oysters, rack of lamb and the trout dinner. Our server Megan was super friendly. The food had all kinds of wonderful flavors and the charred brussels sprouts and collard greens are to die for. Don't miss the store next to the restaurant that has so many interesting things. We literally had never eaten at any restaurant on the Athens, Alabama square until my wife chose The Southern Table for lunch. Disappointing is an understatement. Apparently the female wait staff didn't like us because it took three shots at getting us a server. Our third server was male and he treated us fine, while the first two female servers stood up front shooting the breeze. At the time, there was only one other customer in the place and we were both wearing deodorant. ;-) We ordered the corn muffins for an appetizer that somehow were burnt on the top, yet served cold and upside-down. The butter for the corn muffins was far too salty with heavy garlic. (Thankfully they were taken off the bill.) Our club sandwiches and fries were done fine for a southern-style meal. We simply discovered that southern-style is too greasy and heavy for us. We looked at the ratings for this place ahead of our visit and discovered in retrospect that most reviews were likely for dinner. However, based on our lunch experience, we won't be back for dinner. Go here! We drove from Huntsville, and it did not disappoint. The atmosphere was southern with charm. The restaurant is also connected to a general store, which is fun to walk around after. The service was quick and kind. They checked on us an appropriate amount. But the star of the show was the food. We started with the cheddar biscuits, and they were fantastic! I had the steak, and my wife had the fries chicken. Both were fantastic. You could cut the Steak with a butter knife! We cannot wait for our next trip back. read more

The food and service were very good. The atmosphere was quite loud and proved difficult to enjoy a calming and relaxing evening. We found the seating uncomfortable as they utilize a bench along the wall with a very short seating area from the back of the bench to the front. And, the seating of the patrons seated at the adjoining tables were too close together. Overall, we enjoyed our food and service and recommend to the establishment that they look into improvements in sound baffling on the brick walls, upgrades in the quality of their seat, along with changes in their arrangements on the dining floor. read more

Babaaaaay! A time was had last night at The Southern Table. It was two of us. I ordered the blackened catfish with grits substituted the green beans for mushrooms and onions (and glad I did) and ordered the white beans. My friend had the hamburger with fries. The wait time for our meal was 15-20mins which is average. But honey if I knew what I was about to try, I would have waited an HOUR, no lie. Our food arrived and the catfish was huge, it was not crispy/seared enough so I sent it back. And proceeded to try my friend's food. I grabbed some fries and I swear someone in the kitchen is a drug dealer because the fries are like crack we were addicted. They seasoned those fries and not sure if there was truffle oil but they weren't ORDINARY fries. I then cut into my friend's burger (medium-well) BABY when all the juices escaped, I knew it was on like Donkey Kong. It was cooked to perfection and didn't disappoint. I'm not a beef eater but, I have a future Sunday lunch date to collect my own burger and fries, lol. My food arrived and I tried the grits and the cheese ratio and creamy texture had me almost eat them without the fish. The fish was now sear and the flavor of the skin was impeccable. I then tried my mushrooms, now I have been a vegan, vegetarian, pescatarian and when I say I'm sounding the alarm for any of those that are in those categories. Babaaay, no lie it had to be Jesus himself or an angel that was sent on a special assignment to only make those mushrooms. My palate immediately tasted the red wine and I loved the meaty texture of the whole wholesome the onions almost tasted like a French onion soup, I wanted to drink the juice in cup but my friend said, I was doing too much and we were out in public. So, I ordered an additional order of mushrooms and plan to drink the juice in the privacy of my own home ( haha). I moved to my white beans they were seasoned and like salty so I would need some rice to absorb the salt but they were good. No for the grand finale. I ordered their white chocolate strawberry bread pudding. I'm from East Baton Rouge, Louisiana. So, I grew up on bread pudding. Me and my friend shared the dessert. When I tell you this dessert DID NOT disappoint. At this point I asked to meet the head chef, to offer an official marriage proposal, but he was not there. Women in the Athens, AL, the chef is a bachelor. I don't know how with the way he cooks. So, stop by for the catfish and catch a man too. He's brother was there and I wanted to slap him to sleep because at this point the -Itis was overtaking me. The owner's brother was so polite and was a hoot. All I can say for the overall experience is, MY GOD! It was so good, I got lost in the moment and only have a picture of the dessert but posting receipt, smh. The atmosphere and our server, Estella, were awesome. Sometimes you have to thank God for being alive to experience food like this.
