Delicious! Chicken stew, ribs, slaw & Coke. This is what I've been looking for: great local BBQ by folks who know what they're doing and have lots of loyal customers. Very casual, nice folks working hard, and friendly people in line. I sat at a table outside and ate with two new friends I just met. They've got everything in all sizes and combinations, but I'd gain too much weight if I ate here every day. Wonderful. Recommended among many good local BBQ places by a nearby recording studio tour guide. read more

Went there because of the reviews. The ribs were tough. No smoky smell or taste. I think they were cooked in an oven. Unfortunately for them, there are much better places. The chicken was okay and it was tender. Not a place for out-of-towners, like us, because the only seating are dirty picnic tables outside in the heat. No wet wipes to clean up (a necessity for a good BBQ restaurant. I can't recommend but since I didn't eat anywhere else in Florence, I don't know if that's standard for around here. read more

Bunyans is the best BBQ in the southeast! Love their slaw dogs too. The service is always great.

Yum yum yummy. Hadn't been here in years and I have to say it was as good as I remember. Love me some slaw dogs from this place! Great little BBQ spot on the West super close to downtown. Service is fast and quality of food is 5 stars. Definitely recommend this place if you are in the area. read more

Had to give Bunyan's Bar-B-Que a try because of all the rave reviews I was reading on Yelp. Well, IMO, it's ALL ABOUT THE SLAW, and nothing more. That slaw is a watery mess, but it is also extremely tasty. I wonder if they just sell the slaw itself ? Honestly, it would be the only reason I'd go back. The meat in my pork sandwich was dry, but the slaw saved it. Hot dog looked pathetic when I unwrapped it, but again, "the slaw" saved it. It's all about the slaw at Bunyan's, plain & simple. Quick update -- stopped in for lunch at Bunyan's BBQ over the weekend of 12/13/14. Ordered a small pork platter, with sides of beans & cole slaw. Pork itself was tasty enough, although I felt the portion size was small for the price. Was not crazy about the sides, way too spicy for me, slaw had a mustard-like taste to it. That's all, will post a pic. read more

Feb 7th, on Saturday, Noël Lori-Elizabeth Teel, Dale Tony Vanoy and I was in Florence Alabama for a few hours. We walked around the time checking out the sites and we had lunch there and even visited the campus of UNA. I had read some reviews on Bunyan's BBQ and about their fab SLAW...basically claiming their Slaw was dah' Bomb...so we had to go right? we are right there!!! So, after several views of the google map on my android, I finally found the small BBQ joint in a run down part of town a few blocks back from the main drag, about 10 blocks to be exact. It was only a little to the right after you pull out of the WC Handy Birth Park and Museum. I don't think I would have found it if it hadn't been for myself stopping at the park first. I pulled into the parking lot. The place is small. Noel didn't want anything but a sprite and Tony wanted one with chili onions and mustard..I told him that their slaw got tons of raves but he said NO SLAW..I will taste yours. So I went in to the counter..The lady wasn't real friendly. Usually when you tell someone it is your first time, they are usually helpful ...but not her..I guess she was tired or something. I told her, I need one with chili onions and mustard, a sprite and then one with everything. She said..WE ONLY MAKE IT ONE WAY..I said do you put a sauce on it? She said NO our way ONLY...I said okay, I will take two please and a sprite..she directed me to the cooler behind me for the drink. she charged me $2.45 each hot dawg and a $1 for the sprite. When I got to the car I told Tony..just eat it!!!! He said this is not what I ordered, I said I know..but they only make it their way..so try it...it won't kill you.. after I unwrapped mine..I asked why is the wiener so red..??? we all laughed including Noel...but I have to admit THIS IS ONE UGLY DAMN HOT DOG...but it was really good. The mustardy vinegary slaw was pretty good. The red wiener was hot. The slaw mixture was so wet and runny, it mad the steamed bun soggy and they had a toothpick in to hold it together..very messy for eating in a car.. I would eat here again. I wouldn't dream about them or seek them out like I do Gus' from Birmingham, but I would eat them again. read more

Best BBQ in North Alabama. But my favorite is the hot slaw. I live in Ohio and go once or twice a year to buy the slaw by the gallon. Of course, it goes great on BBQ and hotdogs; but it's also great with beans, peas, catfish, etc. The staff is friendly, and the service is amazingly great, even when there is a long line. read more

Great place! Hot dog, BBQ and chicken were all great. No frills, just good food. Can't wait to get back to Florence to visit this place.

Aside from Walker's BBQ in New Orleans this is the best bbq that I've ever had. Their menu is a bit limited (or maybe I just only get the same things over and over) but what they do, they do REALLY well. Get the hot slaw (I have never seen hot slaw anywhere aside from Bunyan's. I've heard it's a very hyper local thing. All I know is that it's not too spicy and really mouthwatering) on your sandwich and/or your hot dogs and if they have it, get the stew too. I hear that their desserts are good but I'm not a fan of sweets. If I can eat more then I'm going to get stew or a slaw dog to go with my sandwich. Oh yeah, their hot bbq sauce is really good too. Awesome bbq in Northwest Alabama! read more

Bunyan's is a hidden gem. The food is always great and so is the service. Delicious every time !

Yes! Best little red wiener hotdogs on the country. And the slaw is just wonderful on hot and mild flavors. Their barbecue , pulled pork, and smoked and bbq chicken is the best. If you are ever in the area, stop by! It's an original you won't experience it anywhere else. Simple goodness. read more

I have never been big on BBQ but I just love Bunyan's. They have just the right amount of sauce and spice.

Probably the best BBQ in town. Service is fair and not an in-door dining experience but to grab and go it is very tasty.

A lot of really good bbq joints offer hotdogs too. Not just for kids either although that may have been where the idea came from. The mild bbq sauce here is a testament to the glory of the Gallant Pelham. Slaw is equally as well constructed. They make both fresh every morning. Pork butts are pit smoked low n slow long hours . I was hoping for a chili dog but did not find one and settled on a slaw dog instead. The bun was fresh and softly steamed. The weenie was a cheap cyclamate infused bright red color, a perfect combination. Flavors were just right. I could have eaten four but not with the big pork sammywich. Service was prompt and agreeable. Not only were the folks here glad to see me I could tell they were equally as glad to there themselves. Down to earth good eating here. read more

Is it bad that I can't even look at the name of this place without drooling? I've eaten here countless times over the years, and I always love it -- it's always great. The portions are good, the prices are good, and most importantly, the food is SO GOOD. Dodge the sit-downs on Court Street; go here or Dick Howell's. If I had a genie in a lamp, I'd wish for two stomachs so I could eat more slaw dogs. read more

The business has changed a lot cuz I have been coming here for over 30 years but same great taste recommend to newcomers in search of great bbq for there the trip home or whatever the occasion it's worth a try. Make sure if you are not from there you get some sauce to take home cuz an excellent condiment for home. Make this your go to for great fast food that still cooked with love. I clearly think it warrants 5 stars because I drive 1 1/2 hours just for the white sauce! The hotdogs are amazing! Red hotdogs with bunyans famous slaw! The smoked chicken with the white sauce is my favorite. I use that white sauce on everything. It has a sweet taste to it. If you go to Florence and don't go to Bunyan's... you blew it! I used to go here when I was pregnant with my now 38 year old son. Of course he is hooked on it as well. He comes whenever he is in town. read more

I could sum up this review in two words: slaw dogs. But you, faithful reader, you want more than that, right? Fine. Eat the slaw dogs, and you'll be happy you had the opportunity to do so. I heard about Bunyan's from some folks after a round of golf, and was able to convince 14 other guys that this was the place we needed to go for dinner. We rolled up about 30 minutes before closing, and Bunyan's was not ready for us, but they did their damndest to make sure we were all fed, and that nobody went home hungry. Ribs: yes, you should eat these. Chicken: it's the healthiest thing on the menu, other than the Slaw: wow. Like NOTHING I've ever had before. I am going to work to replicate that slaw, it was that good. Slaw Dog: you have not lived until you've put this in your tummy. On top of all that, Mr. Cole(Bunyan's his nickname or middle name, can't remember) came out to talk to us, because I think he had a hard time believing that a motley crew like us could get it together to find his place. This gentleman, and there's no better word for him, was a fantastic host, and was happy to see that we were all enjoying his food the way we were. The fifth star? They gave us a sack of slaw dogs, on the house, to hand out to the folks at the hotel, as a little publicity. When we warned them that the sack might not make the trip without "losing" a few, they threw in a 2nd sack for us. That's the kind of stuff you just don't see all that often. Go, eat, enjoy, and thank them for being around. read more
