I wanted to leave a review here since it seems a lot of the ones posted are dated and that the owners have done some upgrading since. Pros: - location is great to the center of Friday Harbor where most shops/restaurants are (although we drove and explored much more of the island than here). - contrary to previous reviews, breakfast was fantastic and better than what we would've gotten elsewhere. - huge porch with ample seating available. - Greg and Naoni are super kind hosts. Their son Nick is an amazing cook who takes care of all of the breakfasts. All three gave fantastic suggestions of things to do throughout the island and provided maps with detailed instructions on a bunch of stuff. - the bathroom in our room had a bunch of normal bathroom essentials available for us (i.e. qtips, cotton balls, shampoo/conditioner/body wash). I'm going to label these as more "be aware" rather than cons: - the price point is a bit on the high end, but honestly every place that we looked up for lodging on the island was around the same price if you wanted something decent. - it is literally a home as most b&bs are, so expect to hear normal home sounds. We were woken up early one morning to cleaning and what sounded like breakfast prep. Again...normal home sounds. - each room does not have their own fridge, so if you have things to keep cool there is a shared fridge up in the dining room. Not a huge deal, but I like my drinks cold and I guess it would've been a bit more convenient to have something accessible in our own room downstairs. Not really a deal breaker, just something to note. - the rooms don't have central air temp control. Luckily we got a pretty great weekend with good weather, but I could see how if it was extremely hot or cold outside how that could be difficult to manage. We were totally fine. There was a standing fan available in the room if it got hot for us which we didn't have to use as the downstairs was generally cooler in the home. All in all we had a lovely two night stay at Greg and Naoni's home and would definitely recommend to others. I wish I took more pics, but my one breakfast picture will have to suffice. read more

We stayed at Hillside B&B and had a wonderful time. We had the Eagle's Nest room and it was beautiful. The bed was comfortable, the bathroom was beautiful and the views were breathtaking. The best part though, was breakfast. The food was wonderful, I begged for recipes. My favorite was the Lavender Pecan pancakes, although the blueberry french toast casserole was a close second. One of the best parts was chatting with the proprietors. They gave us so many recommendations for things to do and restaurants to try. We would have missed so much without their suggestions. read more

What a wonderful place! The family was so friendly at check-in and during our entire stay. The home is beautiful and clean, great view from the outdoor deck and the living room was very comfortable. Just finished our first stay at Hillside House B&B on San Juan Island, WA. Great place to stay. It's close to everything. Hillside House is beautiful! We enjoyed our stay in the "Captain's Quarters." I stayed here with someone for one night. It was my first experience at a B&B. The owner was nice. He gave a tour of the place and was happy to help with any questions of his business or the area. He had written down on a chalkboard in the kitchen who was staying there and told us where they were from. I guess that's the norm in the B&B world but I really had no interest in total strangers that I would never see or talk to. The room was in the basement/lower level with the bathroom across the hall. The room was decorated in this fishing theme which I don't care for, but it was a nice room with a window seat that looked into a garden. We were there in the spring and there was nothing to look at in the garden at the time. The owner automatically made breakfast without asking us about any diet restrictions or food preferences. Luckily we don't have any, as I would have said something, but I find that strange. Again, might be normal for a B&B. He said we could have coffee anytime which didn't do much for us as we don't drink it, but posting for those interested. Lots of parking available. Easy to find. Close to the ferry dock. read more

An amazing B&B in Friday Harbor. My partner and I only stayed one night, but it was a fabulous experience. Very clean, comfortable and cozy. We forgot to tell our host that we didn't eat meat and breakfast the next day consisted of a ham & egg quiche. When I asked for some yogurt and explained why, he quickly offered to make us plain scrambled eggs! The location can't be beat, close to town and reasonably priced. read more

The place was clean and comfy. The bed was good too. Breakfast was always good and varied each day. Naoni was quite friendly and made everyone feel welcome. Our room was the Ventana room and we had a nice outside exit if we didn't want to go through the main house. We also didn't hear much of the other guests while in our room. read more

My wife and I stayed one night in Friday Harbor then went to Orca's Island. Nick was a great host, very kind and informative about the areas shopping & dining. The B&B was only 1/2 full. We had the Parisian room downstairs that was underneath another room, a little bit squeaky floors but no big deal. Breakfast was delicious, wonderful variety and very tasty. I very much enjoyed this Bed and Breakfast. This is one of the only times I will say don't believe everything you read. Greg checked us in about 5:00PM. He gave us a little tour and showed us our rooms. They are very specific on check-in time. It's from 4-6. It's on the email you get, it's on the welcome sign when you drive up. So, honestly the excuse we didn't know, isn't really an excuse. The house is clean Greg, and Nanoni are wonderful. They are warm, and inviting. The breakfast is amazing! Their son Nicholas bakes, and my goodness is he a wonderful baker. He gets his cooking skills from his dad. Although his mom makes these wonderful cookies! They are so so so good. Oh and make sure to try the homemade oatmeal. It tops off the morning breakfast. The beds are comfortable enough and those pillows are very good. So please. Try this bed and breakfast. If you are courteous, they are courteous. We will stay again if we are back on the island. read more

Hillside House was the first bed and breakfast that my wife and I have ever stayed at, and now the bar is set incredibly high! Nick was an amazing host, and the house was lovely! The common space was warm and inviting, and the view from the deck was great! Our room was cozy and provided plenty of space for my wife and I! Pros: - Friendly and chatty... greeted at the door with tour. ---- Familiar with area happy to volunteer tour guide info. - Clean, good repair and quality. (nice bed & bathroom) - The husband-wife owners take pride and work the business long & hard.. - Centrally located near town with plenty of parking - Plenty of experience so they understand the needs of guest. - Coffee, tea & treats out 24/7 Cons: - Little flexibility for special diet breakfasts. - Noise factor (can't be helped due to design of building) - 10" TV' in room. - Internet unavailable. - Central heating / cooling (so many bed & breakfasts are though) As with all bed and breakfasts... so much depends on the host/hostess. These are good people... working hard with very strong opinions on life and religion (and willing to share). They say it is full many times. This means with 7 rooms, if you are looking for a quieter get-away for peace and meditation... this may not be best choice. If a special diet is on your list, consider other options. Breakfast is satisfactory .. but limited. For the prices vs. other options... not a bad choice. read more

The owners were great hosts and super friendly. The whole property was clean, well maintained and comfy. The owners give a great service by advising on local events happening each day and providing loads of info if you need it. Yes, it may be a bit of a walk into town - maybe 15 or 20 mins, but that's a good thing as it helps work off the excellent breakfast. The only thing is that you will need to be a morning person, or at least pretend to be!!! Breakfast is an astonishingly social affair with the hosts making sure that everyone knows each other and that the conversation flows freely. read more

The only good thing about this B&B was that it was clean. It's a 70's split level house that has never been updated from the green carpeting throughout and the moldy wallpaper in the bathroom. Our "garden view" room was a road facing room with single pane windows. You could hear every car, bird chirp and guest walking in and out. The bed was HORRIFIC. It sank so badly when we laid in it that I almost fell off the bed. The pillows were some horrible version of foam and possibly rubber?? They barely gave at all. The worst part was the smell. The room, linens, carpet, literally everything stank like a bottle of glade room air freshener was dumped on everything. The linens were so heavily scented we couldn't even sleep. This was a room we paid almost 300$/night for!!!! We managed to get 2 hours of sleep and promptly left. For the same amount of money we went to Roche Harbor Resort and stayed in a suite and had a fabulous time. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY HERE!! read more

My experience was on par with Tina T.'s below. If not for Nanoni, it probably would have been 1 star. Pros: -Good location. Beautiful deck, and a portion is almost always in shade, though everyone else noting that you can't see the harbor is true. -Lots of parking. -Nanoni was really warm and lovely! -Reasonably clean, though I killed 2 spiders in our 2-day stay. I can definitely forgive that, though; probably only so much you can do there. Cons: -We arrived early to drop off bags, and I was fortunate that Nanoni allowed me (very, very pregnant) to use the bathroom. While I was in there, Nicholas found my husband and berated him for arriving early and was extremely rude to him about me using the bathroom. Nicholas didn't realize that Nanoni had given me permission, but regardless--this is how you treat your guests? We just put our bags back in the car. I was very uncomfortable. -Noise level was a major issue. I was awake about 6 am both mornings we stayed and struggled to get to sleep early enough to make up for it. -No hair conditioner. This was a huge minus for me, at $350/night. -The bed is SO uncomfortable. My husband slept on the floor. The pillows were extremely hard. -Towels are very, very worn. -Temperature control in the house is a challenge. During the day it was quite warm, and night was too cold. -Very limited TV channels. No Pac12 network. read more

We stayed here for a couple of days and had a good experience. We would stay here again. There are some who wrote that it isn't within walking distance -- I wouldn't necessarily agree with that. We walked to and from the Harbor each time because it's only .7 miles away from the Harbor itself. It just depends on your personal abilities. The food here was delicious. There were cookies and dry snacks during the day, and a different breakfast each morning. I understand why some wrote that Greg can be rude, but interactions with the hosts are minimal, so I wouldn't necessarily choose to not stay because of that. I will say that I agree with a previous review that says the views are exaggerated. We had an "oceanview room" which is a bit of a stretch. Someone wrote about it being a "sliver" of a view, which is pretty accurate. Otherwise though, it was a good stay at the Hillside House. read more

I'm giving 2 star's based on the owner. He was very rude when we arrived. I think the B&B is nice but they lack the ability to know how to treat their customers. There's no changing of linens, no waste baskets emptied. The food is so so. There are no makeup removing pads in the bathroom and a list of do's and do nots on the toilet tank. During high season you have wait until 2 weeks (14) days before you can call and get ferry reservations that are except able and work for you. Their cancelation policy is 15 days. my CC was charged 2 months before we were scheduled to arrive, why? There are a lot of good B&B's on Friday Harbor. I would not recommend this one. read more

Naoni and Greg are two very lovely human beings, and incredible hosts. From the moment we arrived (which was after a long day of flying / driving, so we arrived a few hours later than expected) they accommodated us with nothing less than the utmost hospitality. They were warm, candid, inviting and their Inn was clean. We were in the "Captain's Room," which is definitely worthy of your consideration. The location is easy, in a quiet neighborhood overlooking the taller "mountains" on Orcas, and views of the water and ships through the breaks in the trees. When we return to Friday Harbor (which we will), we will definitely be returning to Naoni's warm, friendly smile and Greg's fantastic cooking. read more

We had a two night stay in the Eagles Nest room. The room was very accommodating and had beautiful views. It was a super fun getaway for us, the hosts Greg and Naoni are awesome, Greg cooks an incredible breakfast every morning and their son bakes daily goodies for guests, it felt just like a restaurant experience which far exceeded my expectations. Everything is clean and has fun themes throughout the house. We truly enjoyed our stay and would recommend it to any friends visiting the area. read more

We traveled this past week for business. As we travel frequently, but infrequently to that location, we know what our travel needs are, but not always where we prefer to stay. My travel partner asked if we could stay in a bed and breakfast as we would enjoy the warm atmosphere that would provide. I looked for one with a view that would take business rates as the area even in off season, is expensive for both lodging and meals. I talked with the proprietor who was willing to take business rates. My travel partner who has some more specific requirements for lodging called ahead of booking to make sure those concerns could be met. She was assured the bathrooms were in suite, the beds comfortable, with multiple pillows, feather pillows, and a TV was in the room. The signage told us we could check in between four and six. Although we did not want to check in, dropping off our bags would have helped. My travel partner could drop off one bag, but I chose not to do so, as she felt she had really pushed the proprietor by asking for this favor. At the end of a long day, we arrived between five and six due to the length of the work day. The proprietor wanted to take us on a tour of the accommodations and appeared to have a canned speech. My partner was shown to a room on a lower level. Her rest room was across the hall, the TV did not work, and the pillows were not feather. They were hard, thick, foam. My room was on the main level, the bathroom across the hall. The carpets were older, with grey along the edges of a pale green in my room, hers were mauve, and both were spotted as well as showed a worn path. My partner said she was told the cable company was to be in the following day to fix the TV. She asked if another room was available, and was told no. We had been given business rates, and no room with a working TV and a bathroom in suite was available at business rates. The room adjoining to mine had a working TV as I could hear it long into the night. My partner who needs some white noise to sleep tried turning on the fake fireplace, but the fireplace rattled periodically, making sleep more elusive. As our travel can sometimes start or extend due to the nature of our business a bit differently than planned, I asked if an earlier check out was available. I was told I could leave, but cancellation was fourteen days in advance, so there would be no refund. I also said we had a dietary need for protein and low carbs for breakfast (my chosen preference for some years, and my partners need due to insulin dependent diabetes). He stated breakfast was served between 8:30 and 930. The meal was to be quiche, and hash browns. I explained we were to work from 8 AM, and was told the breakfast was as stated. When were presented with the keys, the proprietor said there was a key to the bathroom, the bed room and the front door. He stated they did not choose to lock the front door, as there is no crime in the area. As women traveling alone, we were grateful for the ability to lock both our bedrooms, and our out of suite bathrooms, for our security. That of course necessitated waking enough to ensure we had the key, locking and unlocking doors, and ensuring we had a robe to protect ourselves from any concerns just to use the restroom. The robes were available to us, but the signage asked we not use them unless really needed to. We both felt the need to use them given the circumstances, as well as I felt the need to also sleep in mine, as the room was cold, even with two comforters on the bed. In the tour he showed us the coffee area, tea, and an under the counter fridge, with an ice maker. We found coffee available. It was also weak and tasteless. Although both of us are coffee drinkers, we drank tea most of the time were there. We found the ice was very little, and was frosted, and stuck to the bottom of the ice maker. As both of us drink ice water, and prefer to carry it with us for work, we were not pleased to find the ice maker did not make ice. My partner found the ice machine had been turned off. The following morning, I told the proprietor the ice machine did not work. His response was "you didn't fix it did you?" I told him we had put the wire down so it would work. He immediately put the wire back up, and stated he put ice in there from another source. The ice was not refilled. My partners bathroom drains, both shower and sink, backed up when they were used. She said she could smell mildew in the bathroom. The fan in the bathroom simply made noise. After a brief shower, I found I had to leave the door open to the bathroom while I dressed in the bedroom, so the mirror would clear allowing me to finish my morning routine. Although we stayed three days, we did not have linen changes or new towels or trash removal while we were there. The proprietor displayed no interest in knowing what our experience had been. She apparently felt I had not enough travel experience to evaluate her place! read more

My husband and I spent two nights here last week. This was our second visit as we had first been here about eight years ago. At that time bathroom amenities were plentiful - apparently leftovers from the previous owners - consisting of lotion, shampoo and individual packets of makeup remover. Cotton balls and cotton swabs and Suave shampoo and soap replaced the former. A laminated information sheet (a holdover from the previous owners) in the bathroom advised female guests to use the packaged makeup remover pads and not towels or washcloths. When I approached the host (Greg) regarding the lack of makeup remover packets, he asked me if our bathroom had cotton balls and swabs. "My wife uses cotton balls, and if they're good enough for her, they're good enough for you." His rudeness was astounding. Our bed in the Captain's Quarters room was firm and comfortable. The pillows, however, were like rocks. I requested a softer pillow and one was located for me. I also had to request fresh washcloths for our second night as we were only given one apiece for both nights! The food was generally good. Quiche and homemade granola were tasty. Pancakes were undercooked. Coffee was forgettable. The hostess (Naoni) was cordial and welcoming and made the guests feel quite comfortable. read more

We really enjoyed the Hillside House. Our room was small but the furnishings and view of the beautiful atrium/garden were very nice. Our private bath was across the hall from us and it was spotless. Within a walk or short drive from food, shops, etc. Great breakfast and a great island! read more

Boyfriend and I stayed here on a brief off season trip this past March. Pros: - Rooms were very clean and clearly well taken care of. The bed we had was comfortable. - Common areas were very clean and well taken care of. - Owner was prompt in meeting us for check in and making breakfast for us. - Rooms were pretty cutely decorated. - Breakfast in the AM was always prompt and pretty tasty. - A short drive to downtown, about a 15-20 minute walk. Cons: - The views described on the website by the owner are a bit exaggerated. The house is moderately far away from the harbor/coast so you only see a sliver of blue in the distance, really. - Breakfast didn't take into account any dietary preferences/preferences in general. This is clearly stated on their website but still seemed silly to me. It seems like something easy to accommodate. - Our room was cold! We had a space heater that was broken. Boyfriend ended up switching ours out for one in another room. Even with a working space heater, it was still very cold. - If the house is full, be ready to be heard by other people at all hours. We were there by ourselves with the owner but we could hear his every move and we assume her could hear ours. - This is picky, I know, but the cookies the owner laid out for free consumption were just awful. One I think was chocolate/oat/bran/fiber/flax seed something and the other was banana/chocolate chip? Neither of us were a fan. Overall we enjoyed our stay, I just don't know if we will return. I think the experience is deserving of a 3.5/5. Nothing really blew us away but everything was comfortable and acceptable. read more

We stayed recently at this B & B while on a quick getaway weekend. Our experience was average, at best. The room we stayed in was nice, but the noise level was horrible and you could hear everyone coming and going all night long. The shampoo and conditioner provided were large containers of Suave, which at the price point of the place, is ridiculous. I had to go to the local store and buy shampoo! The breakfast was fine, but when we arrived 20 min before the breakfast was finished, we were told there were no more eggs. Tip: get to breakfast when it opens or you may be out of luck! The owners are nice and I feel bad about our experience, but we will not be back. read more

Greg and Naoni were great hosts. Breaky was great considering that we requested no egg yolks in food. Greg was a great chef everything was hot and fresh, loved the lavender pancakes. We were in the Eagles Nest a wonderful room with a large jetted tub. Everything thing was very clean. Close to the town centre and all the conveniences. We had a great vacation. read more

We only stayed here for one night, but our stay was just perfect. Greg and Naoni were wonderful hosts, they were friendly and also gave us our space. We got a full orientation upon arrival and after that they did not really engage with us unless we sought them out, at which points they were pleasant and helpful. There was free tea and coffee (and fresh cookies) available 24/7 in the kitchen, along with a refrigerator for guest use. Breakfast was delicious: lavender pecan pancakes, scrambled eggs, toast, fruit, Greg's granola... so good! Our room was small but comfy and had a nice little view into their garden space. The tv was tiny, but we didn't intend to use it anyways so that didn't affect us at all. We had a car, so it was just a quick little drive from the main part of Friday Harbor, not sure how long the walk would be, but I think it's entirely walk-able. I would definitely stay here again! read more

We stayed for two nights at this B&B for my boyfriend's birthday and had a wonderful experience. Greg gave us a tour when we arrived and asked us if we had any dietary needs. Prior to our arrival they accommodated my boyfriend's allergies and changed the featherbed and pillows. The room was clean and comfortable. It was a bit cold at first, but a little heater was provided and extra blankets were available, even though we didn't need them with the heater. Good coffee and cookies were available all day. Breakfast was pleasant. We had fluffy lavender pancakes one morning and a spicy quiche the next, along with homemade granola and juice. Greg and Naoni were gracious, friendly hosts. Naoni chatted with guests and gave us suggestions on how to spend our time on the island. We visited the lavender farm during the day on Naoni's recommendation. Later in the evening we walked less than a mile into town, had a fantastic dinner and watched the stars from the deck of the B&B. Hillside provided a lovely setting for a romantic weekend. read more

We stayed at the HH over the Easter holiday to celebrate my birthday, we arrived on Easter Sunday afternoon. We were there for two days. The couple was nice enough, but when I came to them in the morning after a horrible nights sleep from a poor mattress that was overly hard as it was worn out, I was made to feel that no one else in the world has ever had a problem with the mattress, and that is was a new posturepedic type mattress, and all the rooms had them. No one had ever complained. I find that hard to believe. However, someone like my husband would never complain, as he does not want to ruffle any feathers and many people are that way. I was exhausted, recovering from surgery, and it was the straw that broke the camel's back for me. I approached the lady of the house (inn) next morning, same defensive attitude. I did not want a discount, I did not want something for free. I wanted to be comfortable. The room next to us was empty the second nite, and she could have offered it - I would have paid more. And even left early, which we did anyway as I was upset about the poor service. I did not appreciate being lied to about the mattress, and I did not appreciate not being taken care of. Just saying you are sorry does not always cut it. Fix it. Make it better. Better still - TAKE A VACATION PEOPLE so perhaps you stay more aware and able to sympathize and put yourself in your customer's shoes. She was so plastic, the same greeting in the morning, the same pushing herself to be the cordial person she did not feel like being. It was obvisous to me that she was finished. She wanted to go back to teaching. I SAY GET OUT OR TAKE A BREAK, AND MOST CERTAINLY REPLACE THE MATTRESS IN THE PICASSO ROOM! And be genuine for the love of God. Food was great but very fatty, and no considerations made for other's palates and dietary requirements. Parking was good. The coffee was horrible, was like brown water and the coffee brewinging or heating mechanism was right out of a Denny's restaurant. Come on, spend 100 dollars and upgrade just a little. You have certainly skimped in other areas, you should be able to afford it. To everyone else, it was overall lovely, and if you are there kind of people I suppose you are fine. I also did not like all the introductions and such as I was not there to be super involved with talking to people. I think it would behoove the owners to do a little marketing research of their own, to make sure they are addressing the needs of those they wish to serve. Good luck! read more

Customer service could be improved upon and breakfast was disappointing.

This was the worst bed and breakfast experience I ever had. We showed up around noon to drop off our bags and the owner (man) was super unhappy about it, saying check in was from 4 to 6. But literally all we asked was to put our bags in the hallway while we went out to explore Friday harbor. I asked to use the bathroom and he said that all of the rooms had just been cleaned and there was no public bathroom. Public bathroom for a guest. After I was shocked and reminded him how simple the request was, especially given we had just paid 350 per night, he finally obliged and I was able to use the bathroom. The owner was so unfriendly the whole time we were there, my fiancé and I felt extremely unwelcome and stressed and it really put a dark cloud over our stay there. Too bad because his wife was the sweetest lady ever, very courteous. It just wasn't enough to turn around the bad experience we had. On top of everything, though there was a big jacuzzi tub the owner warned us not to "waste water", the fireplace didn't work, and the breakfast was pretty blah and did not accommodate dietary restrictions. We left pretty hungry. In summary, do not stay here unless you absolutely have to. read more
