Oh, man. This is a tough review to write. First off, there are so many things I really like about this hotel. The location is great - close to everything in Friday Harbor but not on a street with as much traffic as some others. The customer service is great - just send them a text and you get a response in seconds. The staff are friendly and helpful. Our room interior was good - everything looked clean with plenty of toiletries, cozy robes, and a heated bathroom floor. The bathroom in general was dated. We had a non operational jetted tub that had been converted into a duel faucet rain shower. It was rather weird, but it worked. I also really liked the keyless entry, so no worries about losing your key! Now, my one negative. Our room, and I'm assuming all rooms on this side of the building, abut a loading dock and parking lot for an adjacent grocery store. Every morning at 5am, a semi truck, fork lift, and workers unload the truck. In addition to back up safety alarms, truck engines idling, and workers talking, you also hear the constant rumbling of goods being unloaded. This goes on for HOURS.....starting at 5am. The hotel gives you ear plugs and notes that there is no noise ordinance on the island and notes that neighbors can be noisy and the hotel can't do anything about that. I get it...you can't control noisy patrons or neighbors, but the description given doesn't really convey what is actually going on with this side of the building. Constant, very loud noise and alarms for over two hours starting at 5am. All that said, I would stay here again, but I would make sure any room I book has views of the harbor, and not the back side of the hotel. read more

This is a great place to stay. We have been doing VRBOs in Friday Harbor and honestly, in our price range, we got WAY more for our money at Bird Rock. It has steps, indoors and out (I found the outdoor steps easier on my bad hip) and it's just a lovely place - nicely decorated and SO clean. Our room was Fidalgo, we had a big soaker tub and kitchen area, I loved having two places to watch tv since sometimes one of you can sleep and the other is enjoying vacation insomnia time. ;) Out back, a walk through a parking lot takes you to King's Market which had everything. We did not find the hotel loud, but they offer earplugs just in case. The mattress was great, seriously- firn enough but with a soft topper or something, we both slept so well. read more

What a cute hotel! Only bummer is I didn't see any elevators so it doesn't appear wheelchair accessible (unless I missed it). There's also a lot of stairs. And some of the furniture is dated, BUT what I will say is that service makes up for it. When something breaks, needs repairs or replacing, staff are on it..we were blown away with the swift response we got when we let them know something stopped working. Otherwise we really loved the view, how close it is to food and shops and of course how it's walking distance from the harbor! read more

The place was cute and quaint. The common area was nice and stocked with coffee and tea. We stayed in the Fidalgo room, it was small but cozy. The reason for the three stars is there was multiple chunks of black hair in the bedsheets when we pulled them back. For $345 a night I would have expected a clean bed and not a bunch of women's black hair. It was actually quite gross and if we were staying somewhere with a front desk I would have definitely asked to change rooms. Other than that everything else seemed clean and it was quiet. The only other thing to note is there is no sink in the bathroom so you need to wash your face and brush teeth in the kitchenette. read more

It was my first time on the San Juan Islands, hence, my first time in Friday Harbor. I stayed here on two separate nights, but on the same weekend (one night before and after a seakayaking/camping trip)! Don't think I could have picked a better place to stay! Upon arrival on Friday afternoon, I was greeted by Tory, who was an extremely friendly and nice guy! He gave me great recommendations on where to eat for lunch/dinner and places to drink. My highlights: - Just a couple of blocks away from the ferry. - Within walking distance from the grocery store, bank, restaurants and shopping - WiFi and breakfast is included (they have dairy-free AND gluten free yogurt!!! Dee-lish!) - They also have afternoon snacks that consists of delicious homemade strawberry lemonade and homemade cookies! - There's a bar right across the street so Friday night was pretty busy with a lot of folks out drinking but it was extremely quiet in my room (Skipjack)... go down the hall and poke your head out the window and you hear all the noise! - Comfy bed and pillows!! However, I did get a couple of bruises from the darned corners of the bed. - Clean bathrooms - They have bicycles you could use to get around, if you wanted to. Overall, a very, very lovely and homey establishment AND it's affordable. I will definitely be back to stay here when I return to the islands! read more

In general, since we had planned plenty of outdoor activities, the hotel was great for coming back to rest and for its proximity to stores and restaurants in Friday Harbor. Due to the pandemic, check-in and check-out and all communications with staff is via text and remote. Room cleaning is not available due to pandemic restrictions. However, supplies (towels, bathroom amenities), kitchenware, coffee and tea are well-stocked for ready availability. Unfortunately, there was no gourmet continental breakfast in the lobby which I thought would be provided, but there are good breakfast places nearby to soak up the local atmosphere. The room was clean and modern. No A/C - which I expected but took a bit to figure out the ceiling fan remote (sorta the last thing you wanna deal with after a flight, drive, and ferry ride). Also, one of the TVs was not "working". Only on the last night, did we realize that one of three cords for the DirectTV box was unplugged and had remained hidden unnoticed behind the dresser. If you have a car, you can park in the 2, 4, or 8 hr parking spaces across the street or a block away. Otherwise, we were informed that parking is available at their sister hotel (5-min walk). If you appreciate a modern refuge to change, rest, sleep between outdoor excursions and proximity to the activities of Friday Harbor and understand that there is zero personal face-to-face service, then this hotel serves its purpose for you. read more

What a great hotel! We scored and got our own little studio on the first floor, which has a separate entrance from the hotel - highly recommend spending the extra dollars, as you get your own private bathroom, unlike the rest of the hotel that is communal. The complimentary breakfast every morning was a nice touch. Fresh fruit, juice, coffee, tea, yogurt, cereals & fresh baked scones. Yum! The hotel is in a great location, right in the middle of town walking distance to everything. They have beach cruiser bikes that you can rent to take around town but unfortunately we didn't have time to partake in that. We will definitely re visit next time we come to Friday! :) read more

Best *hotel* accommodation on the island! My partner and I have visited San Juan Island aka Friday Harbor before so we went this weekend for a getaway but this time, decided to try staying at the renovated Bird Rock Hotel instead of Tucker House,. This hotel took my call and gave me and my partner the best deal at $309 (post-taxes) for a Queen-sized room for a 2-nights stay (whereas booking.com charged $330 pre-taxes) so we were already impressed with the price we got. The room itself was quaint (Palos room- https://www.birdrockhotel.com/our-rooms), the amenities convenient (coffee stand, satellite hdtv and 150 DirecTV, etc), and general aesthetic modernized and sleek but not lifeless. Important things to note: - The doors (entry, bedroom, etc.) are code only so that generates in an email when you rent the room - No front desk staff located on the premises (only at the sister hotel, Earthbox Inn) so to reach someone, call between 7:30 AM-8:30 PM. There is a night manager though who is a live-in on-site staff member - Earthbox Inn appears to have a pool, guest laundry facilities, and spa options - January is a slow season so you're likely to have more room choices and at cheaper prices - No pets allowed - Be careful of the kind of room you book. Unless picked, your room may not come with a kitchenette and/or en-suite bathroom - The hotel offers free beach cruiser bikes. Once you rent your room, you get an introductory text, so respond to this number and ask them to set you up with a bike - ALL parking in SJ is capped at 2 hours, 4 hours and 8 hours from 8-5, unless the property has their own parking. This hotel does not (but Earthbox Inn does), so take advantage of the 8 hour parking stalls, which are on the same street of this hotel but past it and up the hill (First Street?), or call staff to see if Earthbox Inn has free parking available - Quiet hours are from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. - Offers concierge service such as massages, kayaking, whale watching, etc. read more

When we booked the Bird Rock, we had NO idea what to expect. We stayed in the Queen room with Shared Bathroom. This is NOT dorm style living. The rooms are small, but VERY clean! So is the bathroom. You get a wonderful basket of shower goodies and robes gently folded on the bed. Flat screen tvs. Free rental bikes. Espresso machine. Did we mention how CLEAN this place is? The shared space is so stylish and comfortable. There are baked cookies and fresh lemonade with strawberry slices for everyone. Also teas and coffee. Best thing: Breakfast is delivered to your door. Yum! Fresh berries and fruit, farm fresh hard boiled eggs, cereal, organic yogurt, granola. You decide what you want and how much of each item. The staff was so nice. We were directed to take a 6 mile bicycle loop on the island. Easily the highlight of our 10 day trip to Washington. read more

I am currently in my room here, and I never want to leave. We are considering "missing" our ferry tomorrow and staying an extra night. It feels like a mini, cozy apartment that is letting us escape from reality. The robes are plush and so comfortable. The staff was over the top helpful, and I am so looking forward to breakfast in the morning. We are going to make this a regular trip, and definitely a regular stay. I AM IN LOVE. Update: I've now gotten back to Spokane from my trip, and I'm longing for the bird rock. The breakfast was worth the wait - absolutely the best continental breakfast I've ever had. Gluten free options, and delicious scones. The front desk lady - I wish I knew her name - was so helpful and sweet and made even the check out a good experience. My husband and I stayed here for our anniversary. We loved it!!! It's very quaint and lovely. We stayed in the Orcas suite and were very pleased! The building is very old and historic. But the interior is totally updated and beautifully decorated! It was so comfortable and had such a "homey" feel which we found very refreshing! The hotel provides earplugs, which I had actually read about in other reviews. Sleeping with the windows open during the summer in the middle of town, there was a little noise. It definitely wasn't a big deal though! We would most definitely stay there again and would highly recommend it! read more

We got here at 10:00 at night. The night manager was kind enough to come outside and let us in. When we got to our room, we were happy to see that there were robes on the bed. They were so comfy! We stayed in the Matia room and the bed was also very comfy. The pillows were super soft. The Matia room is on the top floor,(there are 3 floors) and there is no bathroom in the hotel room. There are shared bathrooms on the second floor. It was no problem for us to use the bathroom downstairs. In the morning, they have breakfast in the lobby. The breakfast includes coffee, toast, hard boiled eggs, yogurt, cereal, fresh fruit, and homemade scones. Yum!! This breakfast may sound basic but it's so delicious! In the afternoon, they have lemonade and cookies in the lobby. We had cookies that were fresh right out of the oven, and they were great! The staff were very nice and helped us find fun things to do in town. We brought a movie that we wanted to watch, but there was no DVD player in our room. Luckily, their sister hotel down the road, the Earthbox Inn & Spa had one that we could use for free. They had movies that we could borrow for free also. The Earthbox has a pool and hot tub that guests at Bird Rock can use. When we got back to the hotel, we couldn't find the place to plug the DVD player into. We asked in the lobby, and a very nice man came to help us. He fixed it up and we were able to watch the movie. They have free bikes you can use, but we didn't have a chance to use them. I have stayed at the Bird Rock Hotel twice and would do so again in a heart beat. This old hotel that has been updated through the years is such a pleasant place that I have recommended it to all of my friends. The first time I stayed here we stayed at the Bainbridge suite with my parents and my boyfriend. It was absolutely fantastic. The price was perfect. The location was great. I could have stayed in the extra large aerated tub all weekend long! I had no problems with noise while we were there, and it was super cute, super quaint. We stayed in June and had a fantastic time. Then we went back in March and stayed in their Salt Spring room. It was super cute, and super quaint with its own outdoor area which would have been super nice if it was warmer. I noticed the noise much more since we shared a hall with another room as well as another door that wasn't labeled. But, at the same time, it was perfectly tolerable. The Bird Rock Hotel is wonderfully located in Friday Harbor. The staff is pleasant and warm. The decor is comfortable and welcoming. I am absolutely thrilled with this place. read more

My family rented out the whole hotel for my sister in law's wedding, so review is based on not having to share the space, but with that said we had an amazing experience. The location was awesome and the staff was some of the best I've encountered. Depending on what room you're in, it can be a bit noisy, but the hotel has earplugs at bedside. The hotel was very charming and comfortable. The beds were heavenly and breakfast was amazing. Seriously, some of the best scones I've had. Coffee and tea are available all day and plenty of lounge space in the lobby and courtyard. There are also two balconies with patio furniture to enjoy on the 2nd and 3rd floors. I would highly recommend staying here or even renting it for a private event should you need to. read more

When I looked for a place in San Juan to book, I looked for a place within walking distance of the ferry and a place that wouldn't make me want to use an insect bomb in the room before going to bed. Bird Rock Hotel is eactly one block up from the ferry and 2 blocks over. It is one block from the main street (Spring Street) and it is newly renovated as of this year into a gorgeous, mod boutique hotel. The bed was so comfy, I hardly wanted to leave the room, the gourmet breakfast (complimentary!) is delivered to your room at the hour of your choice in the morning, and they give you the cushiest of bathrobes to wear like you are visiting some sort of European spa. This hotel does not have a pool and if you want a hot tub, you'll have to pay for it by booking the room that offers a private outdoor hot tub. BUT, you have full access to the spa, pool, and hot tub at their sister hotel, ELEMENTS, just down the street. We didn't go to the San Juans to swim or hot tub, though. We went to kayak and ride mopeds and get away from the hubub of the city. So for us, just having a swank room with a water view and a plasma tv on the wall was enough to make us happy guests. Additionally, they provide complimentary beach cruiser bicycles. It was so much fun to take them out. The hotel is so close to everything, you don't need to use a bike to get anywhere. However, I felt like a kid again and we got a chance to ride to nearby parts of the island outside of Friday Harbor that we never would have ventured otherwise. If you stay here, be sure to hop on one of the bikes for an hour or two and take advantage of the treat! Make note, if you plan to book here you should book more than a standard/basic room if you want a private bath. Many of the rooms share bathrooms, which sounds worse than it is. The hotel has a similar feel to a really nice house or a lodge. Sharing a bathroom feels no different than using the bathroom at a house you might be staying at. The bathrooms are nice and decorated cute and don't give the feeling of a public restroom or a dorm bathroom whatsoever. I recommend it highly! read more

After a very, VERY long week with family, weddings, and vacationing, we needed a vacation. Bird Rock Hotel was the perfect place for us to lounge, relax, and spend some quality time before I moved East. Though our room was very small, it was immaculate, and had all of the amenities we needed and wanted. Being the public school teacher/med student couple we are, we decided on the cheapest room available, the SkipJack. My only complaint aside from the size (we kept smacking our shins on the bed to avoid the dresser) was that there wasn't a window. We had a glass door to the wonderfully relaxing shared deck, but for privacy concerns we were unable to get any airflow into the room at night aside from the overhead fan. But now onto the good things. The shared bathrooms were just fine. There are two full baths and they are only shared between 4 rooms, so we never had an issue of bathroom traffic. Also, the housekeeping staff was so great that the bathrooms were always very clean. We also loved the cable/HBO/internet access, free beach cruiser rentals, free breakfast, and friendly service. The noise issue that everyone complains about was somehow avoided by getting the cheapest room. By being on the correct side of the building we were able to sleep all through the night. This was the perfect escape for two nights away from the city, the slow Seattle drivers, and family vacations. It was also one of the best ways to bid farewell to my favorite, and always home, left coast. read more

This hotel is exactly what we had hoped it would be! The location is ideal since it is within walking-distance from the ferry as well as all the activities in Friday Harbor. The lobby is beautifully decorated in a modern, muted colors with clean lines. (I really love the abstract artwork on their walls.) We stayed in the San Juan suite which featured a private deck, a full kitchen, flat-screen TV and a good view of the harbor. The bathroom had a shower with two shower heads (one on the opposite side of the shower walls)! We did not use the aerated tub but it was there. The king-size bed featured lots of pillows and soft, fluffy down comforter and it was incredibly comfortable! Some caution: Our third-floor room was kitty-corner across the street from a neighborhood bar so it did get quite loud at night. Fortunately, the hotel provided us with two sets of ear plugs so we were able to sleep soundly. Secondly, there is no parking lot at the hotel and street parking nearby are 2-hour parking spaces. However, we could park at a private lot that belongs to their sister hotel, Earthbox Motel & Spa, which is close by. All in all, this place is still highly recommended as one of the premier boutique hotels in Friday Harbor, WA. We certainly do consider staying here again. read more

We stayed here with some friends over Memorial Day weekend. We were looking for a place that was located near the ferry that had two bedrooms. Trying to find a place that met our list of must-haves just a few short weeks before the long weekend, our options seemed limited. Then we stumbled upon the Bird Rock. The staff here are really, really nice and aim to be as helpful as they can to help you find your way around the island, select activities, and get you situated. The hotel also has bikes you can take out around the island (and helmets too, of course). Breakfast is offered every morning (check out the amazing scones) and in the afternoons they have some really, really good cookies in the lobby (as we enjoyed on more than one occasion). The hotel has been recently renovated with a nice, clean modern look - but still warm with rich colors. We stayed in the Bainbridge suite, a two bedroom/one bath unit. The bathroom to our suite was amazing with a huge tub and dual showerheads. Honestly, short of a full kitchen, I would totally consider renting this place as a furnished apartment. We had four adults and an infant sharing the space comfortably. Since this is a sister property to the Earthbox Motel and Spa (a few blocks up Spring), guests have the option to use the pool and hot tub there. I think they may have also a fitness facility too, but make sure you check. You can also park here as well. The Bird Rock is a smaller facility, which we liked - it really reminded me of a big house converted into a hotel. Bird Rock is also priced a little cheaper than Earthbox, so if you don't mind the short walk to use amenities, it's worth saving a few pennies. The downsides: - This is an older property (albeit very nicely renovated, but older) so the walls are a little thin in some areas. We heard a whole lot of snoring one night and most of the conversation through the wall next to us. - The main street of Friday Harbor really is just 20 feet away (okay, maybe like 30 feet) and the grocery store is around the corner, so you will likely hear cars and delivery trucks. - No parking is available (well, no "assigned" lot), so you will have to park on the street and find an area where you can park that isn't timed. read more

My husband I visited Bird Rock Hotel to celebrate our first anniversary. I had read rave reviews on yelp and other Seattleite blogs, and the hype did not disappoint. We drove happened to drive, but you could easily walk to the hotel which is a quick jaunt over from the ferry terminal. The decor is warm and inviting, dark mahogany floors with soft grey and white walls and modernish furniture. We stayed in the ground floor Lopez room, spacious albeit an unusual floor plan, we had plenty of space for our weekend getaway and an incredibly comfortable bed. Previous yelp reviews I read had mentioned to "beware of the ground floor," due to loud upstairs patrons, but we hardly heard a peep minus some action on the stairs which was above our bathroom - but it was only the bathroom where we heard noise, so not too bothersome. The hotel is close to everything in town, although we never ate out for breakfast because the continental breakfast was BOMB! Homemade scones with fruit jam, hard boiled eggs, a selection of cereals, and plenty of fresh fruit. The second day we arrived to late and the scones were gone (so sad!) so get there on the early side!! Overall, a great stay, I'd definitely recommend to a friend. read more

We had a fabulous time staying here. We were so impressed with the quality of people working there especially Winnie. She was able to get us into our room early, let us have scones even though breakfast was over, helped us get our whale watching tour, hooked us up with bikes, held onto our bags when we were checked out but wanted to walk around, and was overall awesome! The breakfast was delicious - the jam for the scones was super good, and the peach Greek yogurt and fruit was a favorite. We loved our room and the GIANT tub in Bainbridge room. The fireplace worked great and was very cozy. Everything just went excellently and that's mainly because of the great people at Bird Rock hotel! read more

Cannot say enough great things about this place! I wish I could give it 6 stars. The staff was unbelievably friendly. The breakfast - especially the homemade scones - was absolutely delicious. Everything was immaculately clean, fresh, and lovely. The shared bathrooms were so clean I couldn't believe it. We also never had to wait to use one. They were a flight down from our room which was no problem for us, but just be aware if that would be an inconvenience for you! Our room - Matia - was great and the bed was comfortable, the robes were a wonderful touch. The only thing I will comment to is that I've seen other reviews complaining about noise and the hotel provided us with earplugs. Our room had a window AC and we never had an issue with noise. It appeared as though some noise started around 9:00AM, but we were already on our way out for the day. Would definitely recommend to anyone coming to the San Juan Islands! read more

We stayed here for one night and didn't want to leave. We had borderline-serious conversations about what would happen if we didn't catch our ferry back to Anacortes, and just hid out in Bird Rock the rest of the week. I think we had the smallest room, "patos", but it was such an amazingly comfortable space that we really didn't care. It is a corner room and one of the walls has a door that opens onto a deck (it faces away from the water or any good view, unfortunately, but was a great place to chill out for a few minutes). The bed was super comfortable, which made up for the fact that I whacked my shins on the corner posts every FREAKIN' time I walked past them. There are two bathrooms shared among 5 or 6 rooms (I think), and they were really clean every time I went in. They were so clean I assumed a staff person must have been going in every 30 min to tidy up, but I learned that they get cleaned once a day like the rest of the place, so if they're clean when you head in to brush your teeth before bed, its by the grace of your hotel-mates. I guess if there are slobs in the other rooms then you may have a bad experience, and I have to admit that I always headed down the hall with a wisp of trepidation that I'd witness somebody's something nasty. The complimentary serve-yourself breakfast in the lobby was a nice combination of different tasty and healthy items, and you eat off of white ceramic with real silverware and nice coffee cups, and the butter is served on a super-cute butter dish. The cruisers (bikes) were in various states of functionality, but we found two that worked and went for a really fun ride on a loop out into the island. We actually checked out of the hotel, left our bags, and took the bikes for a ride. read more

The Bird Rock Hotel was conveniently located right off of Friday Harbor and walking distance to everything you need while on the Island. The hotel was a quaint bed and breakfast type, but with all the amenities of a hotel. It was clean, offered breakfast, a refrigerator in the room (that you could put things in w/o being charged for moving an item), large bathroom, and lush robes. They also offered bikes, although with the island being extremely hilly, good luck! I would definitely stay there again and recommend the hotel to anyone. The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is because of the construction/noise early in the morning. read more

Loved the Bird Rock! My husband and I needed to recharge our batteries and get away from the city for at least 24hrs. The San Juan room at the hotel gave us that opportunity. The room was cute and cozy, I loved the aerated tub and it was great to have the mini-kitchen in the room as well as the private deck with a great view of the harbor. Our only issue was the height of the beam in the room and the height of the shower heads in the walk-in shower. My hubby is 6'10" and bumped his head a few times on the beam and he had to pretty much kneel in the shower. We'll stay here again in the future. read more

I would not return. We stayed in the Morrowstone suite (handicapped accessible). It was more expensive than other rooms but really nothing special. My husband walks with a cane and has balance issues and issues with steps but not terribly handicapped. The bed and towels were soft, and soaps smelled nice. The key pad to get in was really frustrating with no human at a front desk (but available via phone). Light bulbs were out. The light to our room should have had a motion sensor to it so you can see when coming into your room (and punching in your code). The walkway/ramp to the hotel is a cobblestone path that is wobbly (uneven bricks) with no handrail. The room was cramped and small sitting area (stiff loveseat only) was awkwardly arranged with a gigantic sorta ugly gas fireplace taking up a big space. For a handicapped room the thick faux sheepskin rug was not a good choice as it was a trip hazzard/inconvenience for my hubby. There was a large coffee table with sharp corners that was also not a great choice. Another sharp wood corner cabinet right up close to the toilet. It has a roll in handicapped shower but don't expect to get a wheelchair actually into the bathroom or bedroom. The shower fixture needed to be replaced as to find the tricky warm spot in the continual spinning temp adjustment meant standing wet and cold for 5 minutes. Oh and if you do have to sit on the handicapped bench in there, there is no way to reach the holder for the shower wand. Too high. There was a down or down like comforter with a white sheet like duvet cover. Fine but no additional sheet. So you were either super hot sleeping, or you threw it off and had nothing. An additional sheet and light blanket would be nice so you could choose. There was a hot tub, but no way for my hubby with balance issues to enter safely (no steps or handrail. It was not pleasant surroundings anyway...not inviting. 2 small tv's did not have netflicks or anything to stream. To top it all off one morning another guest set the fire alarm off by cooking bacon in the microwave. Who does that? Not the hotel's fault. But not a place I will return to. read more

Bird Rock is a lovely place to stay. The rooms are modern and nice, with great towels and sheets, and amazing, large jacuzzi tubs. Most of the staff were quite friendly, though a couple were surly. We stayed on a Thursday and Friday night in the Lopez Suite at the end of July in 2013. I was afraid it would be extremely loud since it's right off the main street in town, but we found we slept well with earplugs (which, I must add, we are used to do at home, living in the city). The hotel claims to be eco-friendly, but I didn't see much of an effort, and it was disappointing. There's no recycling in the rooms, and no common-area recycling anywhere in sight (though the front desk will take recyclables from you if you ask). The breakfast claims to be "gourmet' but is far from it. The orange juice was frozen from concentrate in a can (I remember the flavor well from my childhood), and the nicest thing about the breakfast was the fresh baked scones, which were ruined by white chocolate chips. There were fresh berries, and Yami yogurt in single-serve containers (with no way to recycle the plastic), and boiled eggs, cereal and toast as promised. But, there's nothing about this breakfast that qualifies it as "gourmet continental". It'd be nice if the hotel had a couple of newspapers to share in the morning. We paid over $250/night for our room, and I wouldn't do it again anytime soon. I'd try another place in Friday Harbor first. That choice is mostly because of the price - the place is great overall. read more

If you want to cut some corners and save a little money, without loosing the quality, this is the place to stay! We stayed in one of the rooms with a shared bathroom so it was a little cheaper, but the rooms were very nice. The place has bikes you can use for free, and when we brought our own on a rainy day, they offered to put ours under the same tarp as their bikes. Everyone was very, very nice! The breakfast was awesome. They had a huge bowl of fresh berries and melons, and the fresh baked scones were delicious. The only bummer is that our DirectTV wasn't working. By the time it was fixed it was time to go to sleep, but that's okay since we wouldn't have watched it much anyway. Some people in their Yelp reviews said that they heard noise from the street. We didn't notice, but then again we live in Seattle so probably wouldn't notice. The hotel provides complimentary ear plugs in each room, probably as a response to some of the comments from others, but really, Friday Harbor is not a very noisy place. This place was fabulous, I would definitely stay here again! read more

The hotel is so cute and in a great location! Right in the middle of town, so it's perfect even if you don't bring a car over on the ferry. My boyfriend and I stayed in a small room with a balcony and it was so pretty in the mornings with all the sunlight streaming in. We loved the comfy bed, big tv for watching movies, and the cozy robes they provide for you. The bathrooms are down the hall (except for a few rooms that have their own), but they are so nice. Heated floors, high-quality soaps, shampoos, etc provided for you in the shower, and not to mention an amazing view of the harbor out one of the bathroom's shower windows. The breakfast was amazing - simple but really delicious. The service and staff are great as well, very friendly and happy to help (even with a weird request such as "can you keep our leftovers in the fridge" - they were happy to oblige). The only downside to the hotel is that it can be loud on weekend nights. We had a group of people who had come from the bars stand outside our window and yell for about an hour at 2 am. The hotel provides ear plugs but it was still pretty annoying. Of course this isn't their fault, just something to be aware of if you're a light sleeper or have a baby. You could ask to stay in a room off the street, as only one side is facing the street. There isn't off-street parking right near the hotel (you can park at their sister hotel a few blocks away). But we parked in the street parking right across the street and had no problems. Our weekend at the Bird Rock was great!! The San Juans are beautiful, the harbor is cute, and the Bird Rock is the perfect, charming place to call home while you're visiting. read more

Understand that the rooms are very small. The windows are on busy streets and the breakfast is no better than going to a local Starbucks for a biscuit and some fruit and you will have this place. I can get the same "continental breakfast at a La Quinta". The breakfast consisted of a biscuit, fresh fruit and hard boiled eggs along with containers of cereal. Price point is way above what it is worth, the employees are top notch. I would not recommend this place to anyone at the price you pay regardless of the fact that this is a tourist area. The bathroom in the "suite" I was in was bigger than the bedroom. The bed was 2 star quality and the head board creaked. The coffee table was broken and the doors to the rooms were not level as they scraped the floors as they opened or closed. Not what I expected by the reviews and pictures. Had a wonderful time in Friday Harbor just upset I paid 4 star quality for barely 2 star quality. read more

I so very much wanted to be able to write a more positive review! Let me start with the good: the hotel is very cute and nicely renovated. It's extremely central to Friday Harbor, and we were always within easy walking distance of shopping, eating, and activities (all important as we didn't bring our car on this trip). The staff was very friendly, and the rooms were nicely furnished and clean. The problems? First of all, the ventilation in our room (Fidalgo) was awful. The temperatures on the island were around mid-70s to mid-80s for the first two days, with abundant sunshine. When we entered the room around 1:30pm, a small portable A/C unit was running -- this made me feel better because other reviews mentioned that the rooms were warm without A/C. The room was a bit stuffy, but we assumed the A/C would take care of this by the time we returned. We wandered around town and had a lovely dinner, finally returning to the room around 8 pm. To our dismay, the room quite literally felt like a sauna. The sitting area was stuffy, but the sleeping area was muggy and extremely hot (we wondered if laundry in the housekeeping room directly adjoining our sleeping area wall was the culprit). The A/C unit didn't seem to be doing anything at all despite our attempts to get a good stream of cool air. We opened the patio door and the single window, turned on both overhead fans, and setup another provided floor fan in the patio doorway. Unfortunately, this only provided minimal relief in the sitting room before the bugs started flying in. Sleeping was extremely uncomfortable. Sadly, we had a repeat the second night, even though we returned to the room somewhat earlier to get fans going and the outside temp was lower with some wind. We were just not able to cool down the room to make it comfortable for sleeping. What made things worse was the incredibly squeaky, fairly uncomfortable bed. Every time my husband or I moved to try desperately to find a comfortable position, the bed squeak and squonked. My husband ended up spend most of the night on the sitting room loveseat. To be clear, we did not ask the desk for assistance with the A/C issue or the squeaky bed, so they didn't have an opportunity to correct the issues. However, visitors to the Bird Rock should go knowing that sunny, warm days may result in challenging sleeping conditions. In addition, we noticed what some other folks did as well: the quality of the room didn't necessarily align with the price. Tiling grout was cracking or poorly applied, furniture was a bit banged up, the room was pretty small... now, I know this is an island and still the summer season, so I'm willing to compromise on some elements knowing that the prices are automatically higher on islands in the summer. This still seemed more wear-and-tear than I was comfortable with for $250/night. In summary, I found Bird Rock and its staff to be charming, but challenging. Considering how very much I enjoy a good night's sleep, I will look for other lodging the next time I'm ion Friday Harbor. If you're traveling during cooler months or sleep more easily than I do, I would recommend giving this hotel a try. read more
