San Juan Waterhouse

San Juan Waterhouse

(1 review)

Every November a business meeting takes my husband and me to the Pacific Northwest and each visit…read morewe try to explore a new area. My daughter, who lives in Olympia, Washington, encouraged us to visit the San Juan Islands (and take her with us, of course) this year. I looked at several possibilities and settled on the San Juan Waterhouse because of its location to the ocean, its view of Canada, the fact it had Internet (I thought I might need to work) and its online reviews. We were lucky that our son was also able to join us, so we felt we needed three bedrooms. The San Juan Waterhouse sits on the edge of the Haro Straight. Its water facing wall is nothing but windows, so nearly every location in the house (including the master bathroom) provides an easy view of the water. The house has three bedrooms. The master bedroom is situated so you can see Canada from the comfortable king size bed. The second bedroom is in a room with three walls of windows. This bed is a Queen. The third bedroom has two twin beds and has high windows overlooking the sod roof of the house. The main room of the house has comfortable furniture surrounding a beautiful stonework fireplace (gas) and padded window seats with many pillows for reading and gazing at the water. The kitchen. Oh my goodness, the kitchen! It has everything you could possibly need for cooking (including basic spices) and an amazing Viking stove. I'd never used one of these before and now covet one for my own house. Because my family was not going to be together for Thanksgiving, we had a Thanksgiving celebration two weeks early and cooking the meal was a breeze (and fun) in that kitchen. The kitchen also holds the house's main heat source -- a gas powered iron stove. It really heats up the place -- even the master bedroom which is down a long windowed hallway. The house has two bathrooms. One, as previously mentioned, has views of the water through the windowed French doors. (they have curtains, so don't worry about privacy). This bathroom has a claw-foot bathtub and a separate shower. The second, smaller, bathroom holds a second claw-foot bathtub (no shower). While the house itself is amazing, the best part is the location. The architect took great pains to fit it in with the surroundings and Frank Lloyd Wright slopped ceilings guide your eyes to the beautiful landscape out the windows. The house is situated on a small cove. My son and daughter ventured out during a late-night very low tide and found some interesting sea life in the tide pools. We had one beautiful sunny day and one day with strong winds and violent waves. We saw many gulls, three eagles and two small deer. I am already plotting our return to this beautiful house -- hopefully in the summer next time.

He offered to help me with my bags into the Zen Cabin. The wood stove warmed the cabin with its sparkling flames. He offered me some tea. I had seen pictures on the website- but lo and behold its real! Could it really be more beautiful in person? Yes it can! Erik has created a place that is warm, tasteful, uplifting, sensual, spiritual, comfortable and comforting. I stayed 3 nights. Zen River Retreat helped me to rest, recover from my hectic life---I was thankful for the quiet, the enchantment, the long soaks in the hot tub by the river. Days gave way to solid nights rest in the cozy comforts of a very nice bed's firm mattress. During my stay I was so happy to find the kitchen so well equipped; I had everything I needed to cook up my nourishments. Less than 2 hours from Seattle! I plan on going back in the every season to enjoy newly the place I love to call "my perfect getaway" to see nature's beauty unfurl along that delightful Lil' Quilcene River Erik likes to call The Zen River~~ He really did create a treasure for us to enjoy! We can't say enough about how great this place was to stay. We had the Arbor room, which was a bit…read moremore private than the others, but they all seemed excellent. We loved the hot tub, the breakfasts, the dogs, and the welcoming people. We were celebrating our 10-year anniversary and it was perfect. The view was exceptional and if we had not booked a kayak camping trip we'd have stayed longer. We had to leave early our last day and they gave us breakfast to go! Highly recommend!

My boyfriend booked this for my birthday a few weeks ago. We stayed 2 nights in a king bed room…read more Other than the room being a bit small, the experience was 5 stars, minus a major hiccup. We were unfortunate to be there when the water pump for the property broke on our second evening. We had been out cycling all day and desperately needed showers. So this meant no showers, no toilet, no hand washing, etc. etc. They gave us a pitcher of water so we could brush our teeth and a bucket of water to do 1 toilet flush. They were super nice and apologetic. They gave us a bottle of wine and a few pieces of nice soap as a consolation. That's the disappointment and why I knocked them down to 2 stars (it would have been a 1 star had the rest of the experience note been so nice). I know this was an unexpected event. And they should have refunded part of the not-inconsequential price for that night or offered a discount on a future stay. A bottle of wine did not change the fact that I went home from my birthday weekend filthy and dying for a bathroom visit. Running water is expected when you've spent $500 a night for a room.

They have several units to choose from, but we chose the "Perch", which was the largest. It didn't disappoint! We didn't even use half the space! Currently, check-in is anytime after 2:00pm. We checked ourselves in and upon entering, found a spacious "home"! Divided by a set of stairs, there is a murphy bed (sleeps 2), bath & shower, dining area and full kitchen to the left. On the dining table was a lovely note addressed to us by the hosts Craig & Michelle, accompanied by a bottle of wine and a bowl of granola bars. Then, in the refrigerator, there was a nicely adjourned box nestled with yogurts, orange juice, hard boiled eggs, fresh fruit, a small bottle of Prosecco (for mimosas) and chocolate! We turned around and on the kitchen counter was a plate of local pastries! In the room on the other side of the stairs is another bedroom (sleeping 2-3), king bed, full bath and sitting area with coffee maker and coffee pods. Downstairs by the front door is a living room with TV, comfy couch & chair, wet bar, small fridge and washer/dryer! As everyone knows, with a home or business, there will always be times of repair and/or construction. Currently, the upper deck is being repaired, so we weren't able to take advantage of that. Instead, we took a long walk along the water, watched the eagles soar overhead, waved at people passing by and enjoyed the fresh sea air! Eating at local restaurants is always a plus and enjoying wine in the evenings watching the sun lower gently on the horizon out of sight made this trip, along with our fabulous hosts, Craig & Michelle, all worthwhile. Thank you for making our local getaway a special one!
