    Outside old hotel

Well you have to stay in this historical hotel if you visit Roche Harbor. Do not expect a five star experience, it is actually a 3 Star at best ( don't get me wrong I liked it). But it is supposed to be like going back in time with shared bathrooms and uneven creeky floors. The view outside the room on the old balcony of the harbor was excellent. You just have to enjoy the old turn of the century feel and be adventuresome while sharing the bathroom with the neighbors. Haha. Oh forgot to say, staff was excellent!

Roche Harbor on San Juan Island is probably the best island of the bunch. While one could stay in a more updated condo or suite you much stay at the historical Hotel De Haro. I stayed in the Presidential Suite which had it's own bathroom and a gorgeous view of the water. There are a total of 20 rooms but only 4 of them have bathrooms. The other rooms have to share a bathroom down the hall but don't let that deter you from staying here. There is plenty to do on the island from shopping in Friday Harbor to hiking at Lime Kilm Point State Park or the Roche Harbor Highlands. Driving the whole island will take you around 40 minutes but it's a great drive and you might see a camel on your way......yes I said camel. It's been a few years so I believe he is still there. You have to stop and take a photo cause I swear he winks at you :) You have to check out the island and the hotel but most of all you must take the time to relax and enjoy the piece and quiet. Breathing a little outside air never hurt anyone. If you want a place to get away for a few days this is the place.

The hotel served it's purpose but it's definitely a historical building with minimal upkeep. Our room was at a 15 degree slant where you could literally feel yourself walking on an incline from one side to the other. I wish I could post a video of a bottle that we set on the nightstand that just slipped right off because of how steep the incline was. At the last minute, we upgraded to a room with the bathroom in it because it was discounted from $295 to $200. Since we were there for a wedding and had to play planes, trains, and automobiles to get to the San Juans from San Francisco... we decided having our own bathroom vs. shared was well worth it. It's true it was, but the place is really run down and just feels a little dirty. There were stains on the couch and a cigarette burn in the bedspread. The bed was not comfy, and you can hear EVERYTHING within a 2 mile radius. Live music is played until well into the night! You can hear a cough in your neighbor's room as if they were right there in your own room. I appreciate that this is a historical building and really enjoyed the historical memorabilia... but I gotta say, I'm not sure how much longer this place will stand if someone doesn't do some serious upgrades. Next time, we'll be digging a little deeper in our pockets to stay in the nicer, new townhouses behind the hotel.

Absolutely delightful, beautiful boat filled harbor (wish we had a boat). A lot of history here. Air conditioned; it was unusually hot for San Juan Islands. Stay in the newer part unless you like an older hotel with history; make sure you get the hotel tour telling you about the history. Make sure you make the drive from the tourist town of Friday Harbor even if you are just visiting.

Oh, man. This is a tough review to write. First off, there are so many things I really like about…read morethis hotel. The location is great - close to everything in Friday Harbor but not on a street with as much traffic as some others. The customer service is great - just send them a text and you get a response in seconds. The staff are friendly and helpful. Our room interior was good - everything looked clean with plenty of toiletries, cozy robes, and a heated bathroom floor. The bathroom in general was dated. We had a non operational jetted tub that had been converted into a duel faucet rain shower. It was rather weird, but it worked. I also really liked the keyless entry, so no worries about losing your key! Now, my one negative. Our room, and I'm assuming all rooms on this side of the building, abut a loading dock and parking lot for an adjacent grocery store. Every morning at 5am, a semi truck, fork lift, and workers unload the truck. In addition to back up safety alarms, truck engines idling, and workers talking, you also hear the constant rumbling of goods being unloaded. This goes on for HOURS.....starting at 5am. The hotel gives you ear plugs and notes that there is no noise ordinance on the island and notes that neighbors can be noisy and the hotel can't do anything about that. I get it...you can't control noisy patrons or neighbors, but the description given doesn't really convey what is actually going on with this side of the building. Constant, very loud noise and alarms for over two hours starting at 5am. All that said, I would stay here again, but I would make sure any room I book has views of the harbor, and not the back side of the hotel.

It has steps, indoors and out (I found the outdoor steps easier on my bad hip) and it's just a lovely place - nicely decorated and SO clean. Our room was Fidalgo, we had a big soaker tub and kitchen area, I loved having two places to watch tv since sometimes one of you can sleep and the other is enjoying vacation insomnia time. ;) Out back, a walk through a parking lot takes you to King's Market which had everything. We did not find the hotel loud, but they offer earplugs just in case. The mattress was great, seriously- firn enough but with a soft topper or something, we both slept so well.

The grounds -- consisting of about 4 or 5 separate buildings -- had a lovely chill vibe, lots of greenery around the compound, an indoor pool and sauna and a nice array of separate outdoor seating areas. The separate office/lobby was a large but cozy welcoming space with a fireplace, couches and coffee and a comfy spot to relax in. Also, not gonna lie -- accommodations are upscale Best Western level, which again, I have no problem with, but just so ya know, that's 300 greenbacks in high season. Hey, it's an island, I get it, there's not many options; Just throwing it out there. Our Queen Standard room was on the small side, but the bath/shower was perfectly adequate (if a bit dated), as was the A/C, and the bed and bedding was pretty comfortable. The staff too was awesome, cheery and happy to meet any need. We loved the pool and jacuzzi setup, and there's even a little exercise room in the same building. One thing I could have done without were the 5 or so emails I received before check-in, begging me to complete the online check-in form ahead of time, so I could just go right to the room without needing to stop at the office. Didn't work and I still had to physically check in. So yea, that was a pain. And yet? They still get 4 stars. Our one-night stay may have been expensive but it was very comfortable.

We were unfortunate to be there when the water pump for the property broke on our second evening. We had been out cycling all day and desperately needed showers. So this meant no showers, no toilet, no hand washing, etc. etc. They gave us a pitcher of water so we could brush our teeth and a bucket of water to do 1 toilet flush. They were super nice and apologetic. They gave us a bottle of wine and a few pieces of nice soap as a consolation. That's the disappointment and why I knocked them down to 2 stars (it would have been a 1 star had the rest of the experience note been so nice). I know this was an unexpected event. And they should have refunded part of the not-inconsequential price for that night or offered a discount on a future stay. A bottle of wine did not change the fact that I went home from my birthday weekend filthy and dying for a bathroom visit. Running water is expected when you've spent $500 a night for a room.

There are so many positives I am sure I missed some. Location: Close to town (5min), also centrally located to head to any part of the island! County Setting (5 acres) with livestock you can feed! Our room had an en-suite bathroom that was clean and had modern fixtures. Wonderful hosts! Claudia, Tyrone & Sveva. Claudia made an amazing breakfast each morning. She even baked chocolate chip cookies daily, there was also coffee, tea, & hot coco available at any time for us to have from the kitchen. We really enjoyed feeding the Alpacas and Pygmy Goats. The animals were so adorable and friendly. My only con was our initial impression of the room as it did not have a TV. But as our stay went on, we thoroughly enjoyed not having a TV in the room, it allowed us to disconnect more and take in the beauty of the island and surroundings. They do have a family/tv room, but we never felt the need to turn it on. If you are looking for a little peace & quiet, with a great breakfast each morning that is included in your stay, you have to come and stay at the Trumpeter Inn Bed & Breakfast!!
