Cute bakery in Bothell, everything freshly prepared daily, and very reasonable prices. It is definitely cozy inside, with a couple of booths if you want to stick around, and the display cases are filled with a wide variety of treats, from cookies to donuts to cake! The donuts are actually really good, I wasn't expecting my lemon curd donut to be so fluffy, with no grease at all! I also tasted the cannolli based on other reviews, it was so good that I regretted not picking up a second one! They have coffee options too but I got a drip coffee, which was a bit meh (the coffee was probably sitting in the coffee canister for ages). It was very busy while visiting too which is always a good sign, and the staff were friendly even though they were rushed. Well they tried. I'm referring to the box of cannolis that were purchased to bring to a friend's house. I'm relieved that we sampled the cannoli when we got them home because I would've been embarrassed to give these to someone I like. The filling was awful. Please, please if you can't made a cannoli by using legit filling - ricotta cheese and confectioners sugar - please state that clearly so people will know what to expect. My husband went back the following day to attempt to either return them and get a refund or a replacement but they weren't having it. No good faith at this place. If your customer takes the time to return something at least provide a replacement and we'll keep coming back to your small/independent business. Good bye. read more

Really great baked goods and a place we love to stop by as a family. Pretty much everything we've tried there is quite tasty. 2 gripes from me, however: -The coffee is really bad. Like as bad as the stuff a tire shop has sitting in their waiting room. Better coffee would be a huge upgrade. -I really hate those iPad payment stations, where they turn it towards you and ask for a tip. Not that I mind tipping, but I really don't like the feeling of being obligated to give someone an extra dollar or two for handing me a muffin. I'm Dutch, so I have a discerning palate for these foods. I like Hillcrest because they try hard to be authentic and have been around since my youth... however, the saucijzenbroodjes (sausage rolls) lack the seasoning that you find in the Netherlands. They're good, but not authentic. And a sausage roll with sauerkraut is definitely not Dutch. The oliebollen made during the holidays are denser than the light airy oliebollen in Nederland. Gevulde koeken during the holidays are 2 for $10! And I was told a speculaas doll was $15 (tried a sample and it was lacking spice). Prices are outrageous. What is most annoying is that the staff don't know anything about the few Dutch items that are carried. I've been in many times over the years and when I ask questions about the Dutch products, no one really has an answer. Prices are not posted for anything, so you have to be annoying and ask. I consider this place "Dutch... kind of". A real Dutch bakery would have gevulde koeken and stroopwafels year round. You never find stroopwafels here. read more

What a terrific little bakery this is. I stopped by early this morning (a few minutes before they open) and when the woman saw me she came and opened the door. I ordered a couple of donuts and mentioned apple fritters but they didn't have any at the moment. Someone heard me from the back (the baker?) and came out with a fresh batch of fritters. We were easily able to set up a tasting, and during the tasting they also let us try some extra filling options, which was helpful. There are a lot of choices! I also appreciated their flexibility when we wanted to adjust our cake size and # of tiers based on a revised guest count. Delivery to our venue was prompt and hassle-free. I had an awful experience with this bakery. I placed an order for two dozen decorated sugar cookies and when I went to pick them up, they made a mistake and gave me unfrosted. They apologized and thankfully had plenty of decorated cookies in the case to provide, but proceeded to charge me an extra $22 dollars for the price difference, on top of the $44 I had already spent, which was outrageous enough for cut outs that cost cents to make! When I said that I should not have to pay additional for a mistake, the young girl at the counter was courteous enough to say that she tried to ask for the charge to be waived, but the lady in back (assuming the owner) would not allow it. I was appalled at the lack of customer service! I would never charge a customer additional money when I had made a mistake. I had a small wedding with immediate family members during COVID and they made my wedding cake last minute, and decorated it so beautifully.. we ordered a white cake with fresh sliced strawberry filling and whipped cream frosting. The whipped frosting tastes and feels like legitimate whipped cream so be prepared for that and not whipped icing if you order it. Worst customer service I've ever had. I walked in and said that I needed 150 individual desserts for an event tomorrow and asked if that was possible. The girl boxed up 85 desserts over 45 minutes (because I offered for her to help at least ten other people that walked in while I was there). Then she goes in the back and comes out to tell me that she "can't just clear this case out and sell me all these items because each one is hand dipped." Wait, what? "Do you just want to take these that I already boxed up? There are about 80." Um,no. I have 150 people coming to my event... My then-fiance and I had just moved to Seattle and needed a cake for our wedding, then just two weeks away. Other bakeries we'd contacted had laughed at the suggestion a baker could be found for the weekend ahead of the 4th of July; Hillcrest laughed at the suggestion that they *couldn't* help us. When we stopped in and met with Michelle for a cake tasting, she worked with us to meet our tastes exactly, even custom-making a delicious lemon custard/curd filling for us! Despite the busy wedding season and the lateness of our request, Michelle graciously agreed to make our wedding cake. She was wonderful to work with. Neither my then-fiance nor I really cared for cake, honestly, before this wedding cake, but Hillcrest Bakery converted us. On our wedding day, in the reception hall, our semi-naked, three-tiered cake waited adorned with the berries and greenery we'd left for an inconspicuous delivery guy who'd safely conveyed the cake to our venue and then decorated it beautifully. At the reception, it tasted as good as it looked! Our guests were full of compliments. And we snacked on it so much thereafter that a piece of the top tier we brought home narrowly survived for its year in the freezer. We're certainly looking forward to having more cake on our anniversary. This review may make Michelle's schedule busier than anyone's ought to be, but seriously?: The cake surprised two non-cake people. And it was--we say this as picky aesthetes--picture-perfect. I've enjoyed the pastries and donuts from Hillcrest a number of times in the past. The cookies are yummy, the donuts are delicious (especially the apple with cream cheese one), but what finally made me write a review was two particular interactions with the same employee. A young woman who worked there on two Fridays ( I believe her name is Trice/Trese) went out of her way to be SO kind to me and my toddler. My 1.5 year old absolutely loves people and rarely gets to interact with anyone because of the pandemic. This employee not only helped us promptly and offered to open the door since we had our arms full of pastries-- she treated my toddler like the tiny person she is and did not dismiss her just because she is a kid. Trese made conversation with my daughter, asking her about what pastry she wanted, about her toy, etc. Yes, toddlers' level of enthusiasm can be annoying, but if you can show a little patience like Trese did, the parent and the kid notice and appreciate it. Your kindness did not go unnoticed, Trese! And we will be coming back to Hillcrest to enjoy this hospitality and their tasty baked goods. read more

Yesterday, I ordered a birthday cake for my daughter's 4th birthday. I told the person who took my order that I wanted a unicorn on the cake. She quoted me a price and I paid for the cake with a pickup time on Saturday morning. The next day I received a voicemail from the bakery saying the unicorn would be an extra $25 than what I already paid. I left them a message saying I paid the quoted price and that's what I was expecting to pay and to let me know if there is a problem. They called back and left a message saying the unicorn would be an extra $15. The employee acknowledged the person who took my order didn't understand their pricing, so they made an error on their quote. I called back and told them to cancel the order, which they did and issued me a refund for my already $70 cake. I will gladly go somewhere else and pay $200 for a last minute rush on a unicorn cake. It's important to me that a company honors what they tell their customers. Since I had already paid, and I'm running out of time to order a cake, the bakery should have made it right with me. They have lost a long term customer over $25. read more

I looked into yelp for bakery to pick a small birthday cake for my husband's birthday. Hillcrest was on top of the list. I went to bakery mid afternoon. There were few selection of pre-made cake. I picked a yellow honeycomb cake with bees and flowers since it had some personality. It was white cake with lemon. The cake was average, dry and the fondant or cream was too sweet. Considering it was roughly 30$ tiny cake I was disappointed. The salesperson in the store said he couldn't write happy birthday since the bakers leave in the morning... Part 1 of catching up on reviews from my 'internet restricted' summer. Met a friend for coffee before he took off for work one morning this summer. This place is a Bothell institution, but I don't know that that rep has anything to do with it's greatness. Likely more it's longevity. Things change over time, and I think as the family business is being taken over slowly by the younger members of the family, this bakery is going to continue to suffer. Some things, like perhaps baking, don't always carry over from generation to generation with the same passion, or skill. I threw myself on the sword of friendship at my visit here and ended up drinking de-caf coffee when the regular was only enough for an "barely, almost" full cup for my company. I didn't have to go to work, and had the choice of getting coffee elsewhere or going back to bed, so the caffeine belonged to him that day. *btw, I'm not sure that injustice has been made up for yet* The donuts were nothing spectacular, although if you stick to the standards, they are probably close to the best (top 3) you can get in Bothell proper. The "new and exciting" donut ideas they were debuting....kind of show just how out of touch they are getting. Tang on a donut didn't move past silly and taste just as ridiculous as you imagine it would. Trix cereal on a donut...good grief. They still have their winners, some of their cookies are to die for. What a little gem! Not to be confused with Hillcrest in San Diego where I'm from, but rather, this is located outside of Seattle in the burb of Bothell. I've got a pal out there, one of my besties, and her little guy was at preschool so she had both hands free for a coffee and pastry meet up. And Meat I did, in the form of a Russian (maybe Danish) pastry stuffed with meat and warmed up, as well as an apple turnover. Both were quite good, but would have been better slightly more warmed up (they were super busy) The pastry case was over flowing with basically a Wonka level of deliciousness, and the Wedding Cake examples that ranged along the walls were pretty fantastic. They bake fresh bread and pies too! Normally when I sit in a Bakery and have a treat and coffee over an hour or so I'm so over sugar by the time I leave: Between the eating, the smell and the visuals. But not here! Here I just wanted more. Good thing we left when we did! If I lived in the area I'm sure I'd get my bread and maybe weekend bites from here, the BF would rave over the pies too. Haven't been to Hillcrest in a long time. (I grew up in Bothell). Stopped today and bought a variety of cookies: Snickerdoodle, Peanut butter, lemon and shortbread. I have lived in the Bothell area for several years now and have always wanted to check this place out. Well needing to bring a dessert to a NY's eve party I decided to stopped on by. They look like they have a great assortment of donuts and muffins. I am a dessert freak, if anyone has been able to tell from my reviews, and there's a brand name grocery store (won't drop names) who have AMAZING cakes and is less expensive then Hillcrest. I was going to get the bush de noel (as I have bought at the to be named grocery store) and it is to die for. This place however was much more expensive and their decorations were not nearly as festive/enticing. Since I had finally made it here, I figured what the heck I'll try something. So I got a raspberry walnut muffin and two of the meat croissants. The muffin was a ginormous disappointment. It tasted like flour. The only times I got a hint of raspberry was when I actually bit into a raspberry. My boyfriend had the meat croissants and he was greatly dissapointed. He didn't even finish the second one. The prices for these items however I found to be more reasonable. Suffice it to say, I will not be coming back to this place. I'm definitely with the others who do not understand how there has been any great reviews. For those who have done a great review, I beg you to expand your pallet and try other places because I'm sure then you will change your mind! read more

Pretty bummed out to discover I was the most Dutch thing in the Dutch bakery. My family is visiting from Rotterdam in 2 weeks and I just moved into the neighborhood and thought I would taste test a few items before they got here. Last time I checked Mexican tea cakes and maple bars aren't Dutch Are the pics on Yelp old because I didn't see 3/4 of what's on here in the bakery. Not to slam the business. I was in search of a fresh Challah loaf after issues at another place, so I started a bakery search. This spot did not have challah, but it does have AMAZING APPLE FRITTERS! All of these reviews are not kidding. Usually I could take it or leave it when it comes to an apple fritter, but this was my favorite item in our to go box of goodies. All of the doughnut items were really well done imo: they had that crisp edge and the soft, fluffy bread part too. Really...YUM. Lots of specialty cakes here too -- some on display -- and cookies, cake pops, seasonal items..lots to check out. I was surprised to see cannoli in the turning display too and will need to remember this when cannoli-loving folks come to visit us again. The service was friendly...even in the early morning ;) I also was surprised to see a few booths inside so you could sit and enjoy your sweets (and coffee!) if you wanted to right at the establishment. I first sampled their cakes at a wedding show and did not care much for it. My (now) husband convinced me that Hillcrest is popular, and it might have just been an "off" day for them. So we decided to give them a fair try, and ordered a german chocolate cake that was made fresh for us; unfortunately we did not like it at all. The frosting to cake ratio was about 60/40, yes 60% frosting. It was way too much! It didn't help that I didn't like the frosting either, it was way too sweet, and I couldn't get a clear taste of the coconut or nuts. I would have rated this place 1-star, had it not been that on a previous occassion I had one of their maple bars and thought it was decent. read more
