I went over to Speedy Glass to replace a windshield then I came across this gem! Once you walk in you are greeted by sweet and helpful staff! It was my first time stopping by so I was curious what items were popular. The staff were eager to help and answered all my questions! I ordered a chocolate cannoli, a box of classic cookies, and a cake donut. I absolutely loved the cannoli! It's not like an Italian cannoli, but still delicious! The filling is thick and sweet so I recommend drinking a cup of coffee to balance out the sweetness. My friend enjoyed the cake donut and is hoping to visit the bakery soon! We ordered 5 lemon meringue pies from Hillcrest Bakery in Bothell for a memorial service. They were HUGE! The meringue was so tall, beautiful and fluffy. Needless to say the pies were a conversation topic during the reception and they honored our passed loved ones favorite desert perfectly! We went to a restaurant up the street that served this bakeries sourdough. I HAD TO GET A LOAF!! It was so thick and delicious. I love it. However the moment I walked into the bakery I was in sweet heaven LOL! So many sweets and breads! They do not keep the sourdough stocked you have to order it. BUT its so worth it. The sweets are so delicious. I only had a canolli but fully intend on eating one of everything at some point in my life! They do custom cakes here as well and have books and books of them! I love this bakery! It's a quaint little spot to sit down and have a cup of coffee with a small mocha cream cake or white raspberry cake, which is what we did! The cakes were light and both flavors were delicious with the sides accented with slivered almonds. The blue colors and art tiles on the building are a salute to the Dutch roots. We enjoyed it so much that we took home an apple spice donut and some cookies. All of it was delicious, and the price point was reasonable. Never been to a better bakery. Amazing and authentic sausage rolls with sunflower seeds, sage, and rosemary, all rolled into a flaky, buttery crust! The Cannoli should be something to remember. The ones here only epitomize the description! Crispy and flaky roll filled with buttery, creamy chocolate custard. Topped with a dark cocoa whipped cream and dark chocolate chips. Some of the best I have ever eaten. Customer service was fantastic and friendly. Great prices for awesome pastries. This is a quaint little bakery with a background that beats any other. Founded back in Holland in the 1700's and brought here to grace anyone who walks in the door with it's authentic flair and genuine service. On a Saturday morning, we suddenly had a crazy craving for croissants! We started looking around desperately on Yelp and found Hillcrest. Drove there and got there just in time to watch the girl working there sell their very last croissant to the gentleman in front of us! Disappointed and saddened, we settled for a danish and a poppyseed, almond and orange zest muffin! We got home, made some London fog and heated us the muffin, and boy, oh boy, that muffin was gold! They made my sons 21st bday cake last week. It was completely unremarkable in every way. It could have been a Hines box cake, or from Safeway. The way it was decorated was similarly uninspiring. It wasn't expensive, for which I am thankful. We each had a piece, and threw the other 65% out. Cake in the garbage is blaspheme. I also picked up three kinds of cookies while there. Chocolate chip, snickerdoodle, and Mexican wedding cake. They seemed pretty dry/stale! Very thin and crumbly and I hated them. This place is a bothell institution, and I don't know why. One had a mask with her nose hanging out, one with a mask under her chin, and one with no mask at all. I asked why no masks and was informed "well, it's my personal choice"! Great spot just a block off the 522/Bothell Way intersection, with street parking and a small lot. Cute little shop. So much tempting deliciousness on display! The apple fritter looked more doughy than the standard donut shop fritter (like the one I got from the nearby donut shop, to compare:), but was delicious; soft and fluffy, with chunks of apple, yum! The custard-filled choc was delicious as well; I think the "custard" is actually a vanilla creme patisserie? The sausage roll was good too, and would probably have been even better if I'd had the patience to heat it. Bummer that I ordered 2 and only got one, so will have to make sure I get the right quantities next time, because there will definitely be a next time - lots more things I want to try! read more

We requested a naked cake with 3 tiers, vanilla cake and lemon filling for the first and third tier and chocolate cake with raspberry filling on the 2nd tier. Hillcrest Bakery is one of those longstanding bakeries. It has been owned by the same family since 1965 and has served the Bothell community well. It is located in downtown Bothell, right off SR 522. There are just a handful of parking spaces in the back, so you will probably have to find street parking. At Hillcrest, you will find Dutch specialty baked goods alongside other European treats like danishes. You will also find traditional American items like doughnuts and muffins here. And plenty of cookies. It is a bit like Sluys' Bakery in Poulsbo in regards to its diversified selection. Though they don't have baked goods in the front window to entice you in. As it was Christmas Eve, the place was quite packed. The bakery is not very big, so the line stretched to the entrance. There is a lot to choose from. This is one of those bakeries where you will rack your mind trying to figure what you want to get. The baked goods here are reasonably priced. I picked up an almond kringle ($12.95), a loaf of sliced wheat bread ($3.50), an apple strudel ($1.95) and a cinnamon roll ($1.95). Almond kringle is a Danish pastry that is like a large pullapart version of a single danish. The size of it is so massive that a paper board needs to be placed under for support. The kringle is flaky like a danish should be. I like the chopped almonds spread throughout the pastry. But it was a little too sweet for my taste. Sticky sweet to be exact. The apple strudel and cinnamon roll were good, though it was also sticky sweet as well. The wheat bread is hearty and delicious. The bread displayed is unsliced, so request that it be sliced if that is your preference. For its wide selection of baked good offerings, Hillcrest is worth a visit. Even though there are a lot of sweet treats, I am sure those sensitive to sugar can find something here to enjoy. read more

Cute bakery in Bothell, everything freshly prepared daily, and very reasonable prices. It is definitely cozy inside, with a couple of booths if you want to stick around, and the display cases are filled with a wide variety of treats, from cookies to donuts to cake! The donuts are actually really good, I wasn't expecting my lemon curd donut to be so fluffy, with no grease at all! I also tasted the cannolli based on other reviews, it was so good that I regretted not picking up a second one! They have coffee options too but I got a drip coffee, which was a bit meh (the coffee was probably sitting in the coffee canister for ages). It was very busy while visiting too which is always a good sign, and the staff were friendly even though they were rushed. Went here a couple weekends ago for the first time and this is what we bought: ciabatta, apple fritter, Mexican hot chocolate cookie, a couple of the flour thing covered in cinnamon and powdered sugar, and a couple sugar sticks. It was all supremely unimpressive. I don't understand all these awesome reviews, just completely dumbfounded. Everything but the apple fritter went untouched and no one was particularly impressed with the fritter as it was. The absolute worst though was the bread. Maybe if it wasn't labeled ciabatta I wouldn't take such issue with it, but as it was I was extremely disappointed. I really, really wanted to love this place since I pass it all the time, but I just couldn't. To end on a positive though, the staff was very nice! My gent wants me to add that what we purchased was a mix of things we had tried elsewhere and things that were new to us. The apple fritter and ciabatta we've had elsewhere so it's not a matter of us just not liking them in general (how could you NOT like ciabatta?!). This update is because I found out they also do commercial baking. We had been trying to get whole wheat bread sticks in addition to the Olive Garden soft bread sticks we use for our garlic / cheese bread sticks. I had given up on the concept until one morning several weeks ago when I was buying a Bear Claw (available on Fri and Sat mornings, only) I overheard the end of a phone call at the counter and a mention of a commercial order. I asked about bread sticks, took them a sample and they came up with a fantastic whole wheat bread stick. It is exactly what we were looking for, after we put topping on it, firm on the outside and soft in the middle. read more

Well they tried. I'm referring to the box of cannolis that were purchased to bring to a friend's house. I'm relieved that we sampled the cannoli when we got them home because I would've been embarrassed to give these to someone I like. The filling was awful. Please, please if you can't made a cannoli by using legit filling - ricotta cheese and confectioners sugar - please state that clearly so people will know what to expect. My husband went back the following day to attempt to either return them and get a refund or a replacement but they weren't having it. No good faith at this place. If your customer takes the time to return something at least provide a replacement and we'll keep coming back to your small/independent business. Good bye. read more

I'm Dutch, so I have a discerning palate for these foods. I like Hillcrest because they try hard to be authentic and have been around since my youth... however, the saucijzenbroodjes (sausage rolls) lack the seasoning that you find in the Netherlands. They're good, but not authentic. And a sausage roll with sauerkraut is definitely not Dutch. The oliebollen made during the holidays are denser than the light airy oliebollen in Nederland. Gevulde koeken during the holidays are 2 for $10! And I was told a speculaas doll was $15 (tried a sample and it was lacking spice). Prices are outrageous. What is most annoying is that the staff don't know anything about the few Dutch items that are carried. I've been in many times over the years and when I ask questions about the Dutch products, no one really has an answer. Prices are not posted for anything, so you have to be annoying and ask. I consider this place "Dutch... kind of". A real Dutch bakery would have gevulde koeken and stroopwafels year round. You never find stroopwafels here. read more

Really great baked goods and a place we love to stop by as a family. Pretty much everything we've tried there is quite tasty. 2 gripes from me, however: -The coffee is really bad. Like as bad as the stuff a tire shop has sitting in their waiting room. Better coffee would be a huge upgrade. -I really hate those iPad payment stations, where they turn it towards you and ask for a tip. Not that I mind tipping, but I really don't like the feeling of being obligated to give someone an extra dollar or two for handing me a muffin. I special ordered a birthday for my husband's 11 year old son here on Saturday. It was delicious and beautiful! I contacted 3 or 4 bakeries in the area by email first to see if they would be able to accommodate a special order on slightly short notice and on a weekend (about 2 days ahead of time). Hillcrest was the only bakery to get back to me. I work graveyard shift so I tend to do my organizing overnight. It was nice to wake up to an answer. When I called to place the order they couldn't have been nicer. My husband and son have been throwing water balloons with the dogs this summer so I asked if they could put that design on the cake. Yep! At the son's request he got a white cake with chocolate butter cream filling an frosting. I can't eat gluten so I didn't get to try it but all of our guests said it was phenomenal.
