Not even sure where to start here... I went in to Highlands Dentists for an emergency service. My face was swollen, I was in a great deal of pain, and I knew I was in for an unpleasant conversation regarding the type of service I was going to need. After a few x-rays, the dentist told me I was going to need a root canal. Fine. No big deal, I guess. He then left the room and came back ten minutes later to inform me that I was going to need an extraction. The tooth, you see, was cracked. Had to be pulled, nothing to be done. I was skeptical, freaked out, and in A LOT of pain but I acquiesced. The procedure was scheduled the day after the next when the surgeon would be in. Well, I couldn't wait that long. I was back the next morning, more swollen and in more pain. The dentist on staff, Noah Donaldson, made the decision that I should have the extraction then and there. I should have said, "no." I should have waited for the surgeon the next day. Pain won, though, so I underwent the surgery with Dr. Donaldson. Bad idea. He and his assistant spent hours sticking various needles into my gums and the roof of my mouth trying to numb me. When I say "hours," I mean HOURS. He and the assistant performed the extraction...mostly. Because the assistant was unable to find the correct tools (after multiple attempts searching for the tools), he sent me off with a portion of the tooth and the root still in my mouth to be removed by the surgeon the next day. Clown Show. And, of course, I had to pay full price for it. The next day, I am informed by the surgeon that, for an additional cost, I could have nitrous or choose to be knocked out. Neither of these options were provided to me the day prior when I was literally weeping due to the pain. I chose the nitrous because, well, it was just a small portion of the tooth and how bad could that hurt, right? Well, the mask and the tank malfunctioned several times during the procedure. Tubes popped out of the mask, the lever on the tank was stuck on oxygen. The mask gapped at the sides of my face. I was conscious, aware, and terrified for the entire procedure. And, of course, I had to pay full price for it. I have insurance that covered some of both procedures but now, two months and a ton of PTSD later, Highlands Dentists is coming after me for more money. After reading the rest of the reviews, I'm doubting I needed this tooth pulled in the first place. I'm going to need a bridge installed and you better believe I will not be returning to Highlands Dentists for the service. I truly feel that they took advantage of my situation leaving me emotionally and physically damaged. I caution everyone against this place. read more

I went to this dentist office back in March/April. I experienced an accident and thought I chipped my teeth. All was fine for that and I scheduled a cleaning the following week. All they did was floss my teeth and buff them out. Literally something I could've done at home. They said I needed all of these procedures done, including my wisdom teeth removal, and wanted to charge up to $3k. I said I think about it, but when I went to a different dentist this past week they said they never fully cleaned my teeth and told me that I was totally fine. If all you need is a cleaning you're probably fine. Recently I was told out of the blue that I would need crowns on multiple teeth because they are cracking probably from grinding/clenching and would cost me 1700$. At least. That didn't sit well with me so I got a second opinion. The other dentist saw absolutely no evidence of cracked teeth that would need crowns. This office is shiesty and are trying to take your money. A similar thing happened a year ago to my husband but we have no way of knowing after the fact. He always had great exams and all of a sudden they are recommending a deep cleaning that cost us 1000$. He went through with it cuz he doesn't know to ask questions and wonder why all of a sudden he needs this deep cleaning. But I was pretty upset when I found out about it. When I cancelled the appointment for the crowns, I told the front desk what happened and they said "ok. Have a nice day" no apology or clarifying questions asked. It was BIZARRE. Instead, I requested to have them every other year--a decision based on informed personal choice and low risk. The dentist refused, claiming my preference was "beyond the standard of practice." I'm disappointed to say that I do not recommend this dentist. After multiple very positive experiences, my most recent appointment consisted of receiving a $900 out-of-pocket charge for the procedure, the breakdown of which was not explained to me beforehand. The overall charge was cleared with me beforehand, however, I assumed that the entire charge was due to my insurance deductible. Turns out, over $400 of the charge was due to an "upgraded crown" which I learned was not eligible to be covered by insurance in the first place. This charge was never explicitly explained to me and there was no opportunity to opt-out of it. The lack of transparency in this process is frustrating to say the least. Multiple attempts to discuss the matter fell flat after I called the office and was told the office coordinator would call me back, which never happened. While I enjoyed Dr. Lewis and the hygienists, billing and customer services practices are a 0/10 and I will definitely not return. read more

The up charge, the long wait with just me in the office, the rushed cleaning, alllll of it. So bizarre! I will say Ann Padilla was really sweet the rest were just so so so weird. My last two dental appointments have been cancelled same day due to "call-ins"; I'm still waiting for a call from the front desk team to reschedule. That was over a month ago. My husband has had three appointments cancelled due to "call-ins". One of his reschedule appointments was also cancelled due to "call-ins". I also feel every time I get my teeth cleaned they try to sell me on some other, expensive, unnecessary mouth-care. That's after being there for 2 hours for simple cleaning. My experience with Highlands dentists has been horrible. I went in, received a deep cleaning, and paid my bills. Months later I started getting notices from collections agencies. I looked into it and they had not yet resolved the insurance claim - it took me calling repeatedly day after day, and physically going in to the office in order to get them to actually communicate with my insurance to resolve the claim. All the while they had made up another bill out of nowhere, failed to notify me about it, and just sent it straight to collections. After repeatedly calling and calling, they just decided to drop the (probably made up?) extra charges. After some googling I realized Dr. Lewis has gone by at least 3 different names in the past - not a good sign. I have tried to get them to email my records to me so I can share them with a new dentist and it is the same story. They keep promising "sure we will do that" "sure I'll do it by the end of the day" "we'll get to it within the hour" and nothing. Their office is useless and a scam. Go somewhere else. read more

I felt bad because I was 6 mins late to my cleaning appointment, but I shouldn't have because the entire cleaning/ X-rays took about 2 hours to complete, in comparison to my previous dentist visit of 30 mins. Also, this was my first visit here. Previously, I had a deep cleaning a year ago with gum measurements not exceeding a 5, prior to the deep cleaning. I returned to my previous dentist 2 times after the deep cleaning, with improved gum measurements, so I'm not sure how this doctor who measured my gums got worse numbers than prior to my deep cleaning. Other times when I got my gums measured, it never was painful and aggressive like how it felt today. They recommended another deep cleaning, etc, which I woukd have to pay out of pocket for. You can also see other reviewers referencing this, so it's not uncommon. I get that it's a business, but I don't know if there is some shady things going on, but I will not be returning for dental care at highlands dentists. read more

Beware of this group. I went in for exam and was told I needed over $17,000.00 worth of dental work / surgery. The periodontist used scare tactics stating teeth were loose and would start falling out etc. I left horrified. I got 2 other assessments and ended up receiving treatment for approx. $2,000.00. The provider that executed the treatment had to replace a crown Highlands Dentist had done 2 years earlier due to inadequate material used for the crown. They tried to upsell me on $1,500 worth (after insurance) of deep cleaning that other people have also referenced (I got a second opinion and they said I didn't need it). Do not go here I've been here twice for a cleaning because it was the closest dental office covered by my insurance and each time it was the worst cleaning I've ever received. The male Dr. was so rushed both times that the cleaning was actually painful and at times I thought he might break a tooth with how rough he was using the tools. I went into here after not going to the dentist for about 2 years (eek, i know). The front desk was very helpful and very thorough with Covid screenings. After I got my X-rays, I had my periodontal charting done by Dr. Shonts. She said I had a lot of very high numbers and that I needed a deep cleaning ($$$). While I could kind of see this because I hadn't been in for a cleaning in years, I take VERY good care of my teeth and was shocked to hear I had early gum disease. She also looked at the X-rays and recommended I get a crown on one of my molars because it was cracking. I didn't really receive any real explanation behind anything other than "you need this and that." These two things were a pretty penny, and after reading reviews of arguably shoddy crown procedures, I chose to get a second opinion from a different dental office. There, they said my charting looked great and no deep cleaning was needed, a normal cleaning would be perfect. They also said I would need a crown on the tooth (like Dr. Shonts said), which I knew after seeing the X-ray of the tooth. Lastly, they also found a cavity I needed filled as well and they were shocked my other dentist didn't find it. While the cost projections from the two offices came out to be nearly the same, I am MUCH more comfortable paying the cost to a dentist who explains everything thoroughly and I feel at ease with. I completely understand experiences vary person by person, but I just wasn't impressed. read more

Do you like having a simple cleaning appointment take 2-3 hours? How about having crowns they put in place pop off within hours and then get refused to put it back on, saying it was your fault it came off? How about loads of unnecessary x-rays, and getting strep throat as a result of their work? Then this is the place for you! Dr. Miller is a good guy but seems to have multiple appointments scheduled at the same time so a LOT of time is spent waiting and staring out the window, to the point that at both visits I've had I've had to ask if I could go outside and take a walk for a few minutes as I think rigor mortis was setting in. I've had both hips replaced and as a result always need antibiotics before procedures (even a cleaning). However, they refused to give me any and I ended up with strep throat and even still they refused to call in a scrip for that. Pretty sure the state dental board needs to hear about this. read more

I've been going to Highlands Dentists for the past several years and its always been fine - good enough to keep coming back for dental work. This past visit was not great. The hygienist that took my x-rays wasn't overly friendly or talkative. Typically, I don't mind that if things move quickly, but I spent quite a bit of time waiting in the chair. It would have been nice to have a more pleasant interaction. The hygienist left me to wait for the doctor/dentist, but the dentist must have been busy, so she came back about 10 minutes later and polished my teeth. This is the second visit in a row that I had my teeth polished before they were even cleaned. Seemed weird and not overly productive to polish unclean teeth. In all my visits, the polishing has always been the final step. After my polish, my teeth were cleaned by a very friendly doctor/dentist (she wasn't the main dentist - maybe she was another hygienist). However, the cavitron tool is the worst. Seriously, I hate it. I usually have NO issues going to the dentist - in fact, if I leave a bit sore, I feel like the job was done right, but this tool is awful. It feels like lasers into my gums. I understand that it makes the job easier for the dentists/hygienists, but it really is terribly uncomfortable. I will be asking to not use that tool in the future (at this location or any that I choose to visit). The dentist came in and administered fluoride and gave me the OK to go. No issues or concerns on her end, which I'm always VERY pleased with. I feel bad, but I will likely be looking for another dentist for my next appointment. I'm bummed about this because, for the most part, the staff is super friendly and sweet. The front desk person is very friendly, fast, and efficient. Everyone seems to get along well. The other doctors/dentists that I corresponded with were friendly. They are good with communication and reminders. Costs were well-communicated. This visit, everyone that I was in contact with (with the one exception) was very pleasant, friendly, personable, and sweet, but I literally can't stand that cavitron tool. The plus side, my mouth felt okay about an hour later and wasn't sore the next day or anything. read more

Don't go here. The dentist was brisk, extremely rough on my teeth and gums, did not go over my x-rays with me, did not notice a few things that I was concerned with. Most importantly, she overstated my gum pocket depth, and I think she may have been intentionally rough on my gums so that I would think they were "tender", to encourage me to purchase 2 gum treatments for almost $2000. I have never had a more painful gum exam. She didn't even adjust her technique when I was visibly recoiling in pain in the chair. I came here when my tooth was killing me and my regular dentist couldn't see me sooner. After my experience, this will be the new regular. After some tooth pain that kept me up all night, I decided it was time to go in because it wasn't just going away. They had availability within an hour of calling so in I went. After providing the initial profile info through a web portal, they went to work. A few x-rays later came the worst part of the visit - I needed a root canal. But for such terrible news, the way the staff was incredible in how they went about getting me treated. They talked about treatment options, got me scheduled with the endodontist that afternoon, let me know what the full procedure entailed. But best of all, the payment/insurance specialist. Walked me through each individual charge line by line, what insurance would pay & what I would need to pay plus payment options. I can't remember the last time a dentist or doctor was so thorough in letting me know up front what I would owe, not after the fact. Let me start this review by saying that I dislike the thought of going to a dentist so much that I put it off for over 8 years. I was scared and nervous because I knew I needed work done. I will say that the staff is extremely pleasant and made me feel very comfortable even though I felt panicked. Dr. Jozsa asked me about my previous experiences and what I was nervous about. She made sure all the staff knew where my sensitivities were and they were all very responsive to that, which in turn reassured me that I chose the right office. They have all the best technology, quite different from the last time I had a filling many years ago. Xrays were a breeze, everything easy. They gave me the option of gas to relax me and I was thankful I opted in before they even numbed me up. The shots weren't as bad as I expected nor remembered. The deep cleaning I needed would have been terrible had the staff not prepared me properly and taken time to explain everything to me. Even when my breathing would speed up they took the time to pause cleaning and ask if I was doing okay. That meant a lot to me. I am so thankful that I finally got over my fears and scheduled the work I need but I am more thankful that I picked this office out of the blue and they never once made me feel silly for being so scared. Very unorganized and difficult to schedule. I would not recommend this place as it is run with a fast food mentality. Patients should never havee to jump through hoops to schedule a $700 cleaning. No Friday, evening or weekends mean you will see their hygienist only by taking a day off work. Skip the attraction of the bougie location and go to a dentistry that takes time to know their patients, especially if you have good insurance - they simply do not care about you here!! read more

I aged out of my insurance and had to switch dentists. I made an appointment at this office and went in for a simple 6 month cleaning. I was taken back to the room and waited for 35 mins for a doctor/hygienist to come in. They hardly asked me any questions about my dental history. The first thing they said was that I needed a crown because my filling was starting to crack. They said if I don't get it soon I will need a root canal. As a person who has already had a root canal and crown I immediately found this odd. My old dentist had not expressed any concern at my last visit. They urged me to get it done that day and if not that day within the week so it wouldn't get worse and lead to the root canal. I was wary of their scare tactics and told them I would be seeking a second opinion. I sent my imaging to another practice and even went in for a consultation and they saw absolutely no reason why I would need a crown. They said they've had many patients report similar experiences at this office. The staff appear overworked and they have a high turn over rate. This office is a corporate office where their culture is to make money and put profit over patient care. Extremely terrible dentist please do not go there. read more
