I rolled into Highland Local after a long bike ride. The emphasis is on local which made HL an entertaining and amusing place to be on a cold Sunday evening. Most everyone seemed to know each other and Eric the bartender definitely knew everyone, including the folks picking up orders to go. The modest crowd included a large contingent there to watch the Commanders lose yet again. You'll get checked out (especially if your hair is disheveled and you are wearing bike duds), no big deal. Eric, a UMD student, is there to greet you, initiate conversation, and check up on your order ("It's on its way"), the patrons at the bar are thoroughly engaged, it's why they are there. I was even offered a ride home, it was freezing and someone had a pickup truck. The beer selection is way above average (they had my beloved amber) and the food is very competent, kielbasa, pierogies, and fried onions. A pleasant time was had by all, it was fun to have experienced it. Worth an 18-mile bike ride. Again, local is the point, you will meet the neighborhood in this remote part of the DMV. I wanted to like this place, I really did. We arrived and the place was practically empty. Yet we still had ***incredibly*** slow service. We ordered 2 beers, one came out after 5 minutes, the other after 25 minutes. The food was meh at best. First, we waited for almost 40 minutes for it. Then, it was all dry like it had sat under a heat lamp for half an hour. Very disappointing. We heard one of the staff get schooled because another customer just got up and left when no one ever approached his table. Oh, then there's the music. Death metal at 1:00 on a Sunday afternoon? I recently learned of this establishment as I saw an offer for $15 for $30 worth of casual dining. They are located in Highland Crossing. My hubby and I came earlier this week on Tuesday and they were closed (normally not) so we made another trip out today. I made reservations at the recommendation of a staff when I called to confirm their business hours. He said it's hard to predict if they would be busy or not. Upon arriving at 5:30, there were plenty of available tables even though the restaurant is small. We were told we could sit anywhere so we sat at one of the two communal high top tables. Bar and patio seating is also available. My hubby's order included an orange crush, Mangers Irish Cider, malted everything pretzel (app) and pierogi as his entree. I ordered the fish & chips since it got good reviews on yelp. Sadly we were not impressed with our food with the exception of the pierogi, which we both agreed was the best tasting out of everything we ordered. The pretzel was average although the added beer cheese (extra $1) was good. The menu said the fish & chips came with a side of spicy slaw and side of tartar. It came with neither. I didn't realize until coming home and looking at a photo of the menu that it came with slaw. I did ask for the tartar sauce. The fish was bland and needed seasoning or at least salt and pepper, which I asked for. I did like the batter which was crispy. I am not sure why other reviewers raved about the fish. Could it be a new cook? The rosemary parmesan fries had good flavor, but were too soggy. If they were cooked longer and came out crispy, they would have had potential. I think the youth would call this place mid. The food was average at best, didn't feel like there was a lot of effort put forth for a Friday night dinner out I just expect more. Prices were high too but the flavors were bland. The beer list was okay but way too many IPAs really limited selection if you aren't in the mood for hops. Let's just say if this was near our house, we would be there all the time. Clearly a local joint. Open inside and family friendly. Excellent beer list on tap and in cans. Great menu options! Love that they have lots of local beers on tap. And live music tonight. Bless his heart I'm old enough to be his mom but no breaks in an hour plus set of music that spanned the decades. We visited Highland Local for the first time for their Disney Trivia this past week. We called ahead to reserve a table and saw our reserved spot as soon as we came in. Our server was super friendly and answered all of our questions about the menu. My husband ordered one of the beers, and I had one of the fruit mocktails which were both good. We placed our orders for the Everything Pretzel, Duck Wontons, Fish & Chips and Chicken Curry special. Our food took a while to come out; we waited over an hour for our appetizers. Our server was very apologetic which we appreciated. When our main entrees came my husband's entree was wrong. He got a chicken sandwich but he had ordered the chicken curry. Again, our server was very apologetic and offered to let us keep the sandwich and get the curry as well free of charge. She explained that they had new cooks in the kitchen that night. As for the food, the fish was a bit bland and my fries were a bit undercooked. I did not want to ask for a remake knowing how long we had waited for our other food. I swapped my fries with the ones from the sandwich and they were crispier and well-seasoned, but I did not eat the fish. My husband said he liked the chicken curry special. As I said, our server was great, apologetic and did take off items from our bill. The trivia was also fun, but the food was just not great for me personally. However, we could definitely tell that there were regulars at the restaurant, and with the new cooks, it might just have been an off night. I'm a big fan of their Beer (Beazly, Resurrection) and their Baltimore location so when I saw they were in Clarksville had to make the stop. Pretty quite around 4 but definitely picked up by the time I left around 5:30. Hard to believe they have over 70 bottle/can beers -as well 15 on draft. Sort of hidden in a semi office park. Good size bar area and high top and regular tables as well some outside seating. Got a Flight as I wanted to try some of the other draft beers. Rezzy and Beazly were as good as I remember. Enjoyed the Southern Tier Winter and Union Christmas Ales also. Didn't get any food but saw that others were enjoying their Quesadillas, Nachos etc. This is a Gastropub. Jen (Bartender) was amazing! Highland Local is a comfy pub-style restaurant with an interesting menu of regular items and specials. Brian was bartending and waiting on tables the night we were first there and he was exceptional! Melissa is also a great server. We especially like the pierogi, quesadillas, cheeseburgers, and their Simple Salad with steak. The waitress, who seemed to be college age, was knowledgeable of the menu, honest, and helpful The ambiance was in general nice but there was a strong smell of Brussel sprouts lingering the entire evening as well as an abundance of flies. The waitress and food delivery gentleman both apologized. . We ordered the Brussel sprouts and they would have been better if they weren't oversaturated in buffalo sauce. There was so much sauce that we couldn't eat but a few of them, and we both love Brussel sprouts. We ordered the fish and chips with a side of onion rings. The fish was good and the Cole slaw was a bit different, yet tasty. The fries and onion rings were surprisingly okay being that the waitress told us ahead of time, were both frozen products. I have been waiting to check this place out for quite sometime now. I usually come in this shopping center every 2 weeks. I've seen this location and also spotted it on yelp. We visited one beautiful sunny Saturday afternoon. It wasn't crowded. Just one table were being used. So we decided to sit at the bar and we both tried a flight. It consists of four of your choice of draft beer on tap. I really enjoyed it. The bartender Jenifer was very nice and we enjoyed talking to her. We decided to purchase some sandwiches to go. I purchased the Cubano. I end up eating a portion of it in the car. It came with some delicious fries. My husband ordered the Reuben tacos which he said was enjoyable as well. This establishment was clean as well as the restroom which I was very impressed. They do offer outdoor seating as well as indoor. Definitely plan on returning since I loved the variety list of beer and adult beverages. I could see me making this one of my regular spots to visit when visiting this area. read more

Hey everyone! Note: Dog-friendly! Water bowls and plenty of outside for your furry friend. This is tucked away in the back of a shopping center and a little hard to find but this is a cute gem that is absolutely making it into our normal rotation. Diverse collection of local and craft beers you wouldn't see in other places. I got the nitro bloodline and it was fantastic. I normally switch up beers but I had three of these bad boys in a row. The atmosphere was casual, not pretentious, a bunch of TVs (9 large screens inside and 2 large outside) clean bathrooms.... I'm glad I found it. Menu is a little slim but we had the cauliflower bites (Nashville hot) and the duck and creamed corn wontons and every single bite was fantastic. They have a nice patio in front and on the side with heaters and TVs!!. I can envision the acoustic band playing in the corner - and the bartender shared with me that they are looking to add more entertainment. Speaking of bartender - Brian is great. We walked in and immediately got acknowledged - and he was super engaging throughout. Very knowledgeable about beers. He's very passionate about this place.... So find this little gem. read more

This is the first for us... We have never had a place to have good reviews but delivered so poorly. Granted... It's a bar. The cook is clearly not trained. The food came from prepackaged, freezer bags no question. We had the crab dip, which was on the special menu. It was anything but special. The pretzel that came with it was a soft baked pretzel that was cooked in the microwave. It included chips we had to ask for those because they didn't come with it. The itself was OK but again, nothing special. we also had fish and chips. The fish was bland. It was a single piece of fish. The fish piece itself was too was too big. It was wet. That crispy all. And I mentioned it was Bland? The "chips" were decent. The flavor was good, but the cook itself was nothing special. They were too soft. Not crispy. The winner of the evening if there was one, were the onion rings. They were seasoned well and cooked well. No doubt they were not made in house but at least they were good. The ambience was not at all what it looked like in the yelp pictures. It looks pretty cool and vibe-y in the pictures, but in real life, it was underwhelming, and there were tons of flies which was on and, well... unappetizing. The service was SLOW. 45 minutes from order to food arrival. The appetizer came after the main course. The shining point in the holy experience was our server, Aubriana. She was phenomenal. Honest, hard-working, and friendly... if the Cook staff and the quality of the food itself matched the prices and the service, this place would explode with business. As it is, it's just a bar. The rosemary garlic fries are delicious and addicting. The Everything Pretzel with beer cheese and mustard is so much yum. I've never had their fish and chips and these were on point-- 2 nice pieces of cod with a balsamic glaze, fries and slaw. Service is still working out the kinks. Our poor server, bless his heart, was still training and needed a lot of support. Perhaps more training before throwing him to the wolves. Love it here. My husband has been a fan of their beer for many years and we used to go to the Baltimore location once upon a time. The food is really good. We love the garlic rosemary fries! They also have tasty sandwiches, fish and chips, burgers, and really good wings. I finally tried the salmon and it was perfect! There is also a little wine selection which works for me. They have indoor and outdoor seating. But the icing on the cake is the service. Always so warm and friendly. The servers all take their time and try to make more of a connection. First time trying this restaurant. We decided to sit outside. They have a few tables outside but they are not covered and there are no fans outside. They were not crowded at all on a Sunday afternoon. Our server was also the bartender. For an appetizer we had the Brussels sprouts which were very good. It was a large serving which was shared between three people and we didn't finish it. We also tried their soft launch of their brunch menu. The chicken and waffles was ok. The waffle had a sweet taste to it. The chicken strips were fried well but no seasoning. The red sauce that was for the chicken and waffle was too spicy for me. They were able to give me syrup and honey mustard. We also tried the catfish sandwich and steak sub. Both were good. The cheese on the sub tasted like the can cheese. The catfish sandwich was messy but good. Portion size is very good! I would go again to try another menu item. read more

We went on a Saturday around 7pm and to our surprise there was a live band with some good tunes. The folks running the bar were fabulous, the drinks were flowing, and the food was top notch. I'm a huge fan of the Brewer's Art in Mount Vernon, so I was thrilled to try out this location! We stopped in on a Saturday afternoon and I was surprised by how different the vibe is. They do a nice job of looking upscale while giving off a more laidback and chill vibe. There was no hostess, so we sat at the bar high tops (communal-style) where there was plenty of room. Service was good and we promptly ordered a round of beers, triple-fried wings, and rosemary garlic fries --because a trip to Brewer's Art is totally incomplete without ordering the fries!! The triple-fried hot wings were delicious! Nicely crispy, but not too much so, as the name might imply. 8 wings for $10 is a solid deal, although I'll admit the wings were a bit on the smaller side. Still, great for sharing! The rosemary garlic fries were delicious as always, but unfortunately we got the bottom of the batch, as they were mostly crumbled and split. We later ordered the duck confit poutine, 1) because it sounds AMAZING (duck confit gravy, cheese curds, pickled chilis, served over the fries) and 2) in the hopes of getting a better batch of fries. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case, but overall, the poutine was pretty good! The cheese curds added great texture, and the gravy was tasty with a generous portion of duck. Some other things to note: they had the strangest channels up on the televisions! There were weird infomercials playing for hours above the bar, and random other channels like Hallmark. On a slow Saturday, I can understand the Hallmark channel, but why the infomercials?? The world may never know... TLDR: good service, good food, GREAT beer, and weird infomercials. Tucked away in a corner of Clarksville, this charming little restaurant made our entire weekend! The food was incredible...simple done extraordinarily well. The Fish & Chips rivaled the fish and chips joint in Whittier Alaska (before COVID)...ALASKA y'all!!! Oh and chef does not play... the rosemary garlic fries which are awesome enough come with HOUSEMADE ketchup!!! A great selection of beers flow to the table quickly and the service couldn't have been better. Shoutout to our local community heroes! Jen took excellent care of us! We just happened to be the first dine in customers today, but the flow was steady and peaceful. The menu choices are great and I took as advantage of enjoying the specials! Thai mussels and blueberry lemonade! The salads are generous and the grilled chicken is amazingly savory and tender. Thai wings were yummy! Crostini toasts are perfect for sopping the broth. The Thai wings were all delicious and crunchy. The blueberry lemonade is addicting! Blanton's bourbon and Red Breast whiskey for the win. The skillet brownie and vanilla ice cream is decadent and perfect for chocolate lovers! Outdoor seating is beautiful. i have been to Highland Local a few times. over all the food was good. the service on the other hand has always been less then spectacular. on one occasions we waited for an hour before our order was taken. the other times the server was non existent. The techno crap music from the kitchen over powered the music in the bar.This greatly detracted from our over all experience. we did say something to our server but they seemed not to care. we could not figure out why there was some drunk person controlling the music in the bar.
