We were staying at a hotel not far from here and needed dinner and saw that a Mexican taco joint operated out of this brewery (see separate review for Albura Taqueria - very good). The place was packed on a Friday evening and we eventually got two seats at the bar with the help of a friendly patron. The place is large, loud and lively. One of the side rooms is weirdly as bright as a school room. Speaking of weird this brewery is located in the back of an office park... The staff was friendly and hustling. I must say most of their beers are not my favorite. Too many sours and other beers that feel like they are trying too hard to be exotic. I tried their Shore pilsner and even that was a bit odd. I like lighter beers like pilsners, kolsches and hefeweizens so if I lived here I would try some of their non-beer options because I would be back for the food. read more

Still trying to figure out why this brewery has so many Untappd beer awards. I had heard about Sapwood and maybe 4-5 years ago I would have found these offers more appetizing but in the end, going there twice in three days, I wasn't all that impressed by the tap list. We hit the brewery on a Friday about 5:30pm and it was crowded but still found a table. Can't say enough good things about the staff, very attentive, friendly and knowledgeable when it came to their beers. But their beers were all over the board. Honestly, I've given up trying to find a good WCIPA outside of California, but did try their collab with North Park, called Pristine State. Also sampled a hazy pale called Beam of Light, their Pilsner, Scenic, a double hazy IPA, Vanillafort with a sh*t ton of vanilla beans, I'm Grander, their pasty stout and Osmosis, their amber lager. On top of that I also took home their blueberry maple pancakes and tangerine whip smüzi. Didn't open the tangerine and drain poured the blueberry pancakes after maybe half a glass. So Sapwood did a lot of different beers but none that I really could say suited my taste buds. Then again, I'm very spoiled with excellent craft in California. Their food was good, we ordered a taco sampler, Brussels sprouts and nachos. All the food was very flavorful and you got a fair amount for the price. Not much in the way of ambience, but it's a brew pub, there is rarely any of that. All in all my visits were average, not a big fan of their beer selection, nothing really fit my tastebuds, the North Park collab was close. Not sure what their niche was when it comes to beer. I don't need to be overwhelmed by the tap selection. Would I return? Yeah, but not my first choice for craft beer, but the food was more of a hit with me. read more

A colleague recommended this joint and for beer & tacos I was all in! Shrimp taco was perfectly cooked and slightly spicy. The barbacoa had a great beef flavor and the toppings were well paired. This is my second time patronizing and for the second time I can say that the staff are accommodating and friendly. The location is spacious and can accommodate a large party, if needed. The beer seems to rotate and there are many options to choose. They also have specials. The food is surprisingly good, even though they seem to cook the hound dog out of everything. Stopped by after a good day hiking where we needed to unwind and relax with the doggies. Outdoor patio available and few other barrel like tables/ high bar stools area on the side. One of us has a greyhound so we decided more room to sit on the barrel-like tables. We had nachos w/ chicken (enough for 3 ppl def) , corn croquettes and Brussels sprouts. We all thought everything was good, I def tore down the nachos..lol. Not a beer person but friends ordered a couple of rounds. Pretty big indoor dining area for those who prefers to be in the AC :) You can order from QR code or thru the waitress. Prompt and friendly customer service and often checking on us. The food was really the star here. Which isn't exactly what I'm looking for in a brewery. I'm never going to complain that the food was good. Which it mostly was! Those elote fritters were banging and the nachos were good! Weird to just have a pile of beans in the corner. The chicken tacos weren't great. The chicken was really really tough. The service was actually horrible. Waiting 15 minutes to get served after sitting down. And taking forever to get the check. The place was absolutely slammed though so it was probably just a fluke I'm hoping. The beers were also not our favorites. I've been to Sapwood Cellars a couple of times, and it's really nice. It's pretty large - plenty of seating (plenty inside but a nice outside seating area as well). They offer tons of beers; they change them up seasonally, but there's always a lot to choose from. When I last visited, they had (of course) a lot of IPAs, DIPAs, TIPAs, and Hazy IPAs, which aren't my thing. But they also had a Corn Lager, several Sours, a Pilsner, a stout, a Mexican lager, a pale ale, and more - all on draft. They also have a full food menu, so it's an option for lunch or dinner when you come for some drinks. I haven't tried their food, but the menu looked great (elote fritters, tacos, and more). This is a laid-back, welcoming spot that's perfect for hanging out. The spaces are clean and has a classic brewery vibe (not upscale but not bar-esq). They also offer an impressive selection of unique beers and brews, (I loved the Smuzi berries and choc covered) along with surprisingly good tacos. If I've said it once, I've said it a thousand times -- I LOVE AN INDUSTRIAL PARK BREWERY! There is truly no irony in that statement. Nothing like taking a soulless collection of corporate buildings and plopping a brewery right in the middle. I loved my visit to Sapwood Cellars, as it's been on our radar as one of Maryland's best breweries for some time. We stopped in on a long drive home from a visit with family, where we brought our cat with us. Thankfully, due to Sapwood's outdoor space, we were able to bring his carrier to sit outside with us with we tried our tasty beverages. The super friendly bartender said "I think this might be our first cat on the patio!" Some people might find this in poor taste, but if people can bring unleashed dogs in a grocery store, I dont see why my cat (who literally came from the outdoors) can't chill in his carrier in an outdoor space. Cats have feelings too!! Speaking of tasty beverages - I mean, where do you start? I opted for a bottle pour of a gin-barrel aged sour - and I loved it so much, I bought a bottle to-go! I also tried their fall beer, a spiced dark lager - and thought it was delicious. It's a good sign to me when places can do two wildly different styles of beer very well. They had an endless list of options, and had we not a long drive ahead, I could have stayed here all day. Steve and I had two different beers from Sapwood Cellars. The first one we had was the New Hop Crop IPA. Specifically it was a New England style IPA. Flavors to be on the look out for when having this IPA are tropical elements, citrus, juicy, mango and dry-hops... which is always a favorite flavor element of ours. After that we got a type of beer we don't often get and that was more of a smoothie beer. It was more on the sour beer type side as well. It's name was Smúzí Piña Colada and it indeed taste just like the cocktail with flavors of pineapple, coconut and lime. It was creamy and thick which isn't often a preference we pursue but in this case this smoothie beer proved to be quite good. So I am glad at least that I tried a beer type we don't delve into often. read more

Only snacks available but a taco truck is parked in their lot and the brewery lets you bring in food. Wish I didn't eat before so I could try some but settled for a whole container of hummus and large pita chip bag for $10 -- it was a deal. A charming brew house to unwind over their sizeable list and variety of beers and ciders. Initially it was fairly quiet with a few parties here and there, however I learned volume levels can really resonate loudly bc of the interior wall n flooring -echoes. Beer wise they have an option for everyone. I tried several as short pours. The standouts included: 1. The World Moved on Draft. Hazy DIPA at 8.1% ABV. More a piney IPA with less juice. 2. Grapefruit Juicius Draft. 7% ABV IPA that's almost the opposite of the World Moved on. Grapefruit juice and zest mellowed with vanilla beans. Creamy but no lactose in this. 3. 3 Bean Soup. This is an imperial stout with toasted hazelnuts, cacao nibs, vanilla beans, and coffee. Tastes like a mocha hazelnut latte. More of a dessert beer given the taste, thickness and ABV. You'll want a short pour. Food is limited although the often have food trucks. Service was excellent. Good craft brew tasting room vibe. read more

Sapwood is always a stop when we hit breweries in this area. The beer is great and I'm glad they do smaller pours. I saw they recently added a taqueria so will have to try that next time. The only thing I can say about the service is that the last few times we have been here, we have had people constantly coming over to our table, and a different person each time. Each time, someone asks if we need a food menu, if we need help. I feel silly saying it because I'd rather have too much service than wait forever! But my husband and I have been here 20 minutes and I think 5 different people have come over multiple times, so a little excessive. Maybe consider assigning people to specific sections? read more

As the old saying goes, "It it had been a snake, it would have bit me." Did not know a brewery existed so close by, let alone in a business park. Went there for a friend's birthday party. They have a separate room on the left side to hold parties. From the outside of this nondescript building, you would never know what was inside, uh, except for the sign that is. We walked in and it is a rather large bar like setting. It felt comfortable. There were many workers moving around always busy helping customers. They all knew what they were doing. I spoke with the one of the older gentleman and asked if he was the owner. Nope, he just works part time. It appears this place opened in 2018. I assume this place was able to stay open through this pandemic because it works like a fine oiled machine. Literally anyone of the employees could have been the owner/manager. They were everywhere taking care of things. They brought over our drinks to the party room, cleaned up regularly, and all were friendly and helpful. I don't think they served food as I did not see any food menu, but they had a food truck outside which was also on point! Had a great time and wouldn't hesitate to go there again! read more

I went to Sapwood just as they opened on a Sunday afternoon. We had 5 adults and 2 children in our group. My son and his family go there often and had eaten there twice since they opened their kitchen and started serving food. They currently only have tacos on their menu, in addition to some appetizers/starters. This review is mainly for the food and service because I don't drink beer, although my son and husband really like the beer that Sapwood brews. They were having a special wine tasting day from a winery on the Eastern shore, so I tried that. The wine was very good. The food: We started with the Brussels sprouts, nachos and corn fritters. All were good; the plate of nachos was huge! The Brussel sprouts were very flavorful but were very greasy. I love Brussels sprouts, the more charred the better, but I could only eat 2 and didn't eat the leftovers. Two of us ordered the mahi tacos. They were ok but not great. The size of the fish was pretty small and the tortilla was soggy. I ate one (had to eat it with a fork) and gave one to my son to try. We all agreed that this is our least favorite of their tacos. The others enjoyed the carnitas and Barbacoa tacos. I had some of the carnitas and liked it a lot. I'll order that next time. There isn't a children's menu but they made a cheese quesadilla on request. Neither toddler ate it but I can't say why; who knows with toddlers? The service: this was the most disappointing part of the meal. Even though we were the first to be seated, and the restaurant was empty, they only gave us 2 plates and utensil sets for 5 adults. We had to ask for more after our appetizers arrived, and then they still didn't bring enough. When we ordered, I asked the server how the fish tacos were. She said okay and did I want 2 or 3, assuming that's what I wanted. I went with it, although I guess I shouldn't have based on her response. She never smiled and wasn't very friendly. At least other servers came by at times to see if we needed anything, but the service as a whole seemed a bit disorganized. Those drinking beer were asked often if they wanted more but I only ordered a Diet Coke (besides getting tickets for the wine tasting) and wasn't asked if I needed a refill. I do appreciate that we weren't rushed to turn over the table. Our ages ranged from 2 to 92, so we were there for a long time. I'm mainly writing this not to be a complainer, but hoping the owners read it and learn since they are not experienced yet in preparing and serving food. I also hope they add to their menu. How about adding a salad or a veggie quesadilla? And maybe chicken nuggets or something else for kids? Its a favorite spot for the younger members of the family so I'll go back, but will give them some time to work out the "kinks". read more

Love this place! This might be our new go-to brewery. Every beer we tried was great (between the 2 of us, we tried 8). Everything from their lighter beers and IPAs to stouts and sours - they did them all well. The service was amazing...we had 4 different servers checking on us and chatting with us about beer selection. The food truck (sliders) was great too though I think the trucks rotate. It's kinda tucked away, not a spot you happen across. It's really nice inside and the bar tender was very pleasant and helpful when deciding which of the really good beers to try. My only complaint is that they don't serve food. They do have a regular rotation of food trucks from what I was told. Unfortunately we arrived after it had gone. So check the times of the food trucks or eat prior to going. Other than that they serve a good beer. read more

Sapwood is by far one of my favorite breweries for quality beer- they always have reliably delicious IPAs on draft, and often have some unique varieties on draft, in which I discover some new style amazing beer I never would have expected to like if it weren't a Sapwood production (for example the Orange Creama dark mild-drool-the White Painting Hefe-swoon). No matter what they do, they do it right! A hidden gem indeed, tucked away in the business park off 108- they don't seem like much when you drive up, but when opening the door they are a gorgeous oasis of ambiance, with beautiful plant décor, candles on tables, a fantastic vibe. Only made more fantastic by the top notch quality people they employee- every bartender makes you feel like an old friend; asking about our beer preference as we get ready to order the first pint, allowing samples for bad decision makers like myself, and checking in on our experience throughout making sure we are all set. They offer half or full pours, at reasonable prices per variety, and offer cans and growler fills to-go. This is among my top go-tos for bringing or recommending to craft beer lovers. Stopped here one night on a little random brewery adventure tour with my husband. Cute spot, though from the name I thought there might be wine too. There was. Beer that had wine in it. I gave it a 4 only because so many of there beers were too hoppy. Loved their peach sour, and the bar tender mentioned they switch beers out often, with a few staples. My wife and I spent a delightful afternoon in this place during our recent visit to Columbia. We were positively impressed by the beer scene in the town already, but Sapwood was definitely the highlight. They had a wide variety of beers and we loved more than a few of them, even beers that fell outside of our normal taste ranges. The staff were all friendly and helpful. Excellent! Very unusual for every beer to be great at a brewery, but we tried 8 or 9 and they were all very good. Safe to say this is the best brewery in Columbia. Nice selection of drafts (more than 10) plus bottles and cans. Not cheap, but I would say fair in price and definitely high quality. At least $6 for a full pour, but some were more limited or stronger brews so were offered as small pours. Nice that they also allowed for samples and tasters, or half pours. No dogs allowed inside, and no food available. They said there are food trucks some days though. They do let you bring outside food in. They do allow dogs on the patio but that is only open on the weekend. Overall, loved it. Highly recommended. read more

I wanted to like this place, but it's just not my cup of beer. Pluses-They have tons of parking on the weekend, a big taproom. Friendly service. Cute logo. Minus-By ways of menu, they use a QR code that takes you to a comprehensive list of their beers, which is nice except you can't tell what's on tap unless you read in depth about each beer. So I stood at the bar and read through the names on the wall. They had 7 or 8 beers on tap, a few of them with interesting twists, like rum and banana flavoring, but they don't do flights, just half pours, and I honestly don't think I could drink half pours of what they had on tap. I was interested in their Hefeweizen, but it was in a can. I also wanted to try the cider, though it wasn't on draft either. When I'm at a brewery, I prefer draft beer and none of these were for me. I had a sip of my husband's festbier lager, though it was very hoppy and tasted like an IPA to me. If you like IPAs, you'll probably enjoy this taproom. read more
