    Breakfast burrito
    Ashley G.

I haven't been here in so long it was called Buzzie's the last time I came. I wasn't expecting much, to be honest, so I was pleasantly surprised that they were willing to make my breakfast burrito vegetarian, that it was delicious, and that the server made sure to keep our coffees topped up. My niece had a Mickey Mouse pancake the size of her head that was light and fluffy; my bro in law tried and enjoyed a breakfast pony (some concoction of muffin, hash browns, eggs, and gravy); and my sister had the slimline salad which she thought was just okay. But the prices are great, and the decorations on the walls are really kinda cool. 5/5 for me, with an acknowledgment that I've only had one experience here to draw from.

    Navy Bean Soup

I stopped her for lunch at 11:50 am on a Monday and about half of the tables were taken.  I was told to sit anywhere, and I picked a booth by the window.  My server came over right way and gave me a menu and took my drink order.  When she returned with my drink, I ordered the Southern Fried Steak special, it came with mashed potatoes and gravy.  It also came with a choice of soup or salad, and I chose navy bean soup. The soup arrived right away and was tasty, I was expecting more of a traditional ham and bean type soup, and it was heavy on the beans and the broth was really good.  There was meat in there as well. The Southern Fried Steak came out shortly thereafter and was really a good tender piece of meat.  The breading was terrific and overall, it had a good flavor.  It was served with peas and those were OK, most likely right from a can, but totally edible. My server was attentive and took very good care of me.  She was very friendly. I would definitely eat here again if I'm ever in the area.  Good food for a decent price, it's a good combination.

    Turkey club, fries and Ski

It's not bad, nor is that good. The service is fine, and the retro-ness of the Highland Diner is okay. Old photos grace the place, and the food prices are very reasonable. However, this is one of those "you get what you pay for..." places. While I do like that they have a full menu, their food is just average. I didn't care for the horseshoe, as something just didn't seem right about it. Turkey club was okay. Their breakfasts are alright - at least they serve it all the time. I haven't had their ice cream yet, as they do have a little booth that contains several flavors. They do sell Ski, which is a plus (hey, its by Clinton County - no excuses not to! lol) I have been here a few times with my parents. Each time I went there I knew it was a place suited towards (p.c. way of saying this?) elderly people, as they grew up with diners as part of their culture. A lot of seniors like to gather here and socialize for hours. Not really a family place, or for most people in the younger generations...if you know what I mean.

Stopped at this cute little diner. This diner is about 30 minutes away from my house and we will definitely be back. The staff was so extremely nice, the diner was super clean, and the food was delicious!

Instead, it was a very enjoyable breakfast. I ordered, The Livy which was, one egg, choice of protein, hash browns and toast. I choose bacon as my protein. Their menu proudly promotes that the bacon and sausage is from local farmers. Trust me when I tell you, the bacon was very delectable. It could have been crisper, but the flavor made up for the lack of crispiness. I choose not to take the toast with my breakfast entree, because I also ordered a half size of Biscuits and Gravy. The biscuit was not made it house, its shape was too perfect. However, the gravy with chunks of locally sourced sausage made it a true comfort dish. The gravy was a semi-thick milk gravy and it wasn't overly seasoned with salt and had the right amount of pepper. Trying to watch my sodium intake, I like it when chefs are light handed when shaking the salt into a recipe. The atmosphere is like stepping back into the 50's. You truly will feel as if you left the sock hop and stopped by the local soda shop for a bite. I'll give you a heads up, the outside is junky with a lot of weird stuff. Ignore the decor on the outside and head straight into the diner for a good home cooked meal. The service was impressive. One waitress was taking care of the entire small dining room. I over heard her tell another table, that she was relatively new. Being new, she did a great job. She was attentive and very personable. Her service alone would get me to come back.

We were headed to the airport and I searched for a 'diner like' place just off the interstate around an hour away. I came across Powhatan, and while the outside didn't look like much in the photos, the food looked great and the reviews were excellent. I bookmarked it, and sure enough it didn't disappoint. The outside is a basic restaurant attached to a hotel/motel. Think side of the road bare bones motel. Honestly, if I hadn't read the reviews I would have just kept on driving. Inside was very nice - not fancy but very bright, clean and welcoming. There was also a small slot machine area off to the side if that's your thing. I ordered the Pocahontas Pride, which was chicken friend steak, two eggs, hash brown casserole (I opted for plain hash browns) buttermilk biscuits and sausage gravy. I think it was $15. And it was enough food for two people easily. Very good, and very filling. My daughter ordered boneless wings (I tried a couple since there was too much food for her) and she and I both loved them. I'm normally hesitant to order wings outside of my normal places, but she will order them anywhere and she gave them great praise. She also added 1/2 order of onion rings which were both great and ample - I thought they actually got the order wrong there were so many. Wife wasn't feeling well, so she ordered a simple order of hash browns and liked them. All in all, a great experience for a quick stop during a long drive. Again, without reading the reviews in advance, I doubt I would have ended up at Powhatan. But I'm glad I did!
