    A Bloody Mary!
    Wanda H.

For out in the boonies, this place is perfect! You can get a Bloody Mary, for goodness sake's! Now it's not a FANCY one, but it was tasty! And they'll substitute liver sausage for ordinary sausage in their skillets, so that's what I got. Where ELSE can you get something like that??? And it was GOOD, not real expensive, and the service was spot on. Gotta appreciate all that.

    Gary H.

Great Breakfast! Biscuits and Gravy were very good. The Eggs perfect, sausage very tasty. Home fry's potatoes were real and done well Forgot to take picture first but in the middle of breakfast. Great Job!

Food and service was horrible. Don't stop here. Always takes forever and food has no flavor.

Our server Hailey was very bubbly and welcoming from the start. She made sure we took our time to figure out what we all wanted. Took my dad out for early father's day lunch. We all got sweet tea. Husband went with the all you can eat chicken option. Which they do that on Wednesdays and Sundays. You can mix/match dark or white meat. You get all the sides. Dumplings, mashed potatoes, greenbeans, corn, coleslaw, and apple sauce. He was full and definitely enjoyed the chicken. My dad did the chicken meal 2 dinner with 2 sides. Without Yelp, there's zero chance I…read morewould have eaten here, and yet it turned out to be a fantastic option as we were driving down I-70 towards St. Louis. We were headed to the airport and I searched for a 'diner like' place just off the interstate around an hour away. I came across Powhatan, and while the outside didn't look like much in the photos, the food looked great and the reviews were excellent. I bookmarked it, and sure enough it didn't disappoint. The outside is a basic restaurant attached to a hotel/motel. Think side of the road bare bones motel. Honestly, if I hadn't read the reviews I would have just kept on driving. Inside was very nice - not fancy but very bright, clean and welcoming. There was also a small slot machine area off to the side if that's your thing. I ordered the Pocahontas Pride, which was chicken friend steak, two eggs, hash brown casserole (I opted for plain hash browns) buttermilk biscuits and sausage gravy. I think it was $15. And it was enough food for two people easily. Very good, and very filling. My daughter ordered boneless wings (I tried a couple since there was too much food for her) and she and I both loved them. I'm normally hesitant to order wings outside of my normal places, but she will order them anywhere and she gave them great praise. She also added 1/2 order of onion rings which were both great and ample - I thought they actually got the order wrong there were so many. Wife wasn't feeling well, so she ordered a simple order of hash browns and liked them. All in all, a great experience for a quick stop during a long drive. Again, without reading the reviews in advance, I doubt I would have ended up at Powhatan. But I'm glad I did!

Instead, it was a very enjoyable breakfast. I ordered, The Livy which was, one egg, choice of protein, hash browns and toast. I choose bacon as my protein. Their menu proudly promotes that the bacon and sausage is from local farmers. Trust me when I tell you, the bacon was very delectable. It could have been crisper, but the flavor made up for the lack of crispiness. I choose not to take the toast with my breakfast entree, because I also ordered a half size of Biscuits and Gravy. The biscuit was not made it house, its shape was too perfect. However, the gravy with chunks of locally sourced sausage made it a true comfort dish. The gravy was a semi-thick milk gravy and it wasn't overly seasoned with salt and had the right amount of pepper. Trying to watch my sodium intake, I like it when chefs are light handed when shaking the salt into a recipe. The atmosphere is like stepping back into the 50's. You truly will feel as if you left the sock hop and stopped by the local soda shop for a bite. I'll give you a heads up, the outside is junky with a lot of weird stuff. Ignore the decor on the outside and head straight into the diner for a good home cooked meal. The service was impressive. One waitress was taking care of the entire small dining room. I over heard her tell another table, that she was relatively new. Being new, she did a great job. She was attentive and very personable. Her service alone would get me to come back.

I am sure we will be back over the years to try other things. The young lady working the window was a delight, bright, friendly and a good ambassador for the place. There are "oddities" all over the lot. I suspect it was quite the back in the hey dey of route 66. It all looks a bit weather-beaten and a little sad right now. Perhaps that is the charm.
