If fried chicken were a love language, Good Ol' Days Family Restaurant would be my soulmate. This cozy spot in New Baden, IL is serving up food so good, it'll have you questioning your entire childhood. I don't know who's back in that kitchen, but they're frying with passion, prayer, and probably a cast iron skillet blessed by someone's meemaw. We didn't even go for the all-you-can-eat fried chicken (which is only $13.99, by the way?!), and our total bill for TWO people was $24. That's highway robbery--in the best way. Let's break it down: * Fried chicken: Golden, crispy, juicy. Absolute perfection. * Mashed potatoes with gravy: Smooth and savory. * Coleslaw and green beans: Comfort food classics done right. * Rolls: Fluffy carb clouds of joy. * Brownies: $1. Moist, chocolatey, and sprinkled with powdered sugar and magic. Their slogan is "Food so good, you'll think we stole your grandma," and honestly? I never met my grandmas, but if they cooked like this, I see why they'd get snatched. This is one of those hidden gems that makes you feel like you discovered something sacred. No pretense. No gimmicks. Just fried chicken and feelings. Worth the drive from anywhere near the St. Louis area. And if you're into brutally honest food reviews with a little sass, follow me on Yelp and Google Maps--I'm always chasing my next favorite bite. #NewBadenEats #FriedChickenDoneRight #ComfortFoodGoals #GoodOlDaysMagic #WorthTheDrive

Located about two miles from I-64 along the main street (Hanover), the restaurant is easy to find. There is a sign out front and on the side of the building. Parking is along the side of the building in a gravel lot. The lot also opens behind the restaurant, and there would also be parking available on the side street. I think there was a handicapped space near the main road but everything was full when we arrived so we parked in the rear. The walk was not difficult. Be aware there are steps up into the restaurant as well as the bulk of the seating area. Walking in, you are in a smaller seating area with a hostess stand in the back. We were greeted as we walked in and were taken up a few steps into the larger main seating area. While the restaurant has certainly been around for a while, it was clean and the wait staff were constantly wiping tables or serving customers. Our waitress took our drink order as we were seated and returned quickly. We asked for a couple more minutes to look through the menu. They have most breakfast staples, and I was able to find my go-to item. My dining partner made their selection, and our food was brought to our table in about 10 minutes. My eggs were cooked as ordered, and the sausage was thoroughly cooked without being burned. The hash brown casserole was wonderful and is an excellent choice. The biscuits were hearty and seemed made for gravy, which was excellent. The side of pancakes was also very good as they were light and absorbed the syrup very well. My dining partner's omelet was large and filling, with fresh ingredients. The hash browns were the "brick" kind, obviously from frozen, and were the least favorite part of the meal. Our server was wonderful and kept the coffee hot and full and made sure we had everything we needed. This restaurant is an excellent choice for a hearty breakfast for a reasonable price.

No better breakfast around! First thing to know about Good Ol Days is that Jane (one of the servers) has worked there 35 years since she was in high school. She and her colleagues have their act together. Service is quick, food is plentiful and tasty, and you'll get what you came for: good eats at good prices. The old guy next to us brought his own fruit for his oatmeal... not because the cafe doesn't offer it, but because he grew it himself! You don't get a lot of that at Panera Bread, you city folks!

Great spot! We drove from Belleville after hearing good things. The ultimate omelet was great, bill was inexpensive, and service was friendly.

Alot of old decor on walls.

This little place is a hidden gem. We love the food here especially the all you can eat chicken on Sundays that come with sides. The parking can be tricky at times. They have a pull up outside the restaurant for pick up orders as well. Great for large and small families. The employees definitely hustle on Sundays. Great staff.

Hands down probably some of the best all you can eat fried chicken around.... We usually will come on Sunday nights and are greeted and sat quickly by the staff. It is $10 per person for the all you can eat chicken and it runs from 11am-8pm on Sunday's. The chicken is fresh, crunchy and juicy, the sides are all great. Nothing to complain about. 10/10 Thanks New Baden

There is a sign on the side of the building that indicated if you need assistance they would bring your selection out to you, which would be a sign of excellent customer service. The short walk from the parking lot along the paved sidewalk leads to a set of double doors and narrow steps into the retail area. This could certainly be an issue for those with limited mobility. Once you are into the retail area, you are greeted by the friendly staff and several display cases of the day's selection. The staff apologized for the limited selection, but I honestly found many great items. I am intrigued as to just how much more extensive their selection would be when they first open. They have the typical danishes, (cherry, apple, cheese, OMG THEY HAVE A GERMAN CHOCOLATE DANISH!!!!). There was a wide selection of donuts and other assorted pastries, and several items which brought back fond memories. We walked out with a couple boxes of treasure for a very reasonable price. We sampled many as we travelled and found each one tasty and wonderful. Berkemann's is a must stop location any time we are travelling through the area.

Unfortunately it was awful. We were sat on the enclosed porch. We had Christmas music blaring so loud that you had to shout. (Someone later unplugged the speaker.) The temp on the porch reached 79, which was quite uncomfortable. We waited about 45 minutes for our food. And, boy was it awful. Frozen pancakes, frozen biscuits, ok gravy, ok casserole and really good sausage links. No serving utensils for anything - had to use my fork to get gravy. No butter. I will say, the place is decorated really well. Top marks for that. As far as food service - this place has no idea what they're doing. All in all - you'd be better off getting a room at the Hampton Inn. It would be cheaper and the breakfast is better. Guess you have to determine how much you're willing to pay for a photo of your kids with the Grinch. (Which we didn't get because we were so hot and uncomfortable.)

I've been there for coffee a few times and like the atmosphere there. I've now been to have breakfast a few times. If you go there on a weekend, there is a line to order food by 9am and the tables fill up but food comes out in a reasonable timeframe and people clear out as more come in. You pick up a menu and wait in line and order at the register. Not much wait time. Employees are nice. The smaller menu is full of hearty comforts. I love that their choices for breakfast proteins include a fried chicken breast and brisket. Their bacon is thick and delicious, the kind that melts in your mouth. The biscuits are the southern homemade style that are thick and crumbly, not sweet. I've saved one once to make a perfect strawberry shortcake for two. The duck fat gravy is good, a little watery, but it absorbs well into the biscuits. The breakfast potato fries look amazing and one day I'll try the pancakes.
