Caramel iced coffee with whipped topping

Stopped at this little place on the way to Iowa. We were the only people there when we arrived. The owner was very attentive and explained the coffee options, answered our menu questions, and shared her plans for the new space next door. Really great service. Food was delicious. We all had different variations of breakfast plates. I'm not a coffee drinker, but my teenage son and husband enjoyed an iced coffee with caramel flavor and whipped topping. It looked good and they said it was delicious. I'm sure when school is in session, this little place is packed! Glad we found it on Yelp...

Food is awesome and the wife and husband combo is even better. Made us feel at home and like we known them all our life's. Great portion size for what you pay for and did I mention the great service?? Well if not go see it for yourself.

I took a trip out to The Lantern with my sister and her kids after it received rave reviews in a local foodie group she belongs to. We were seated and immediately informed our orders might take a while due to a large party arriving just before us. This is truly a family run operation, with one cook shouldering all of food prep. We appreciated the heads up but settled in with some coffee and decided to stay. Our food didn't arrive at the same time, not surprising with one person cooking. Luckily, our server gave my niece a pack of cards to play with and the kids' French toast came out first so we didn't have to listen to complaints of starvation. I ordered the breakfast poutine, a mass of potato, sausage, sausage gravy, eggs and cheese. I was expecting French fries but got home fries/cubed potatoes, which was an better, in my opinion. My sister's biscuits and gravy was a big hit with her and her picky son, who couldn't shove forkfuls into his mouth fast enough. I felt his pain; my dish was huge yet I managed to eat all of it, unable to find the willpower to just put my fork down. The gravy here is really quite good and actually has a nice flavor. Our server was very personable and considerate-we enjoyed talking to her when she stopped by. The menu changes monthly, which can be great but caused my sister some sadness as she was mentally bookmarking the breakfast poutine for her next visit. However, I'm sure she'll find something to enjoy with the new menu. 4 of us (1 kids meal, 3 regular meals, 4 drinks) got out of there for under $40 minus tip. Delicious food, great service and great prices. If you go with a group be patient. Again, this is a small operation. Ask for the playing cards and get some coffee. It's worth the wait.

Finally made it back for breakfast! The Rise & Shine was divine! Be sure to have enough time to enjoy this place. It's not a fast food kind'a place (THANK GOODNESS!).

Really great food although I'd expect a wait if they look busy or you have a larger party. Quick and friendly service, we will be back here again! All of the food was exceptional but I didn't prefer my cold brew - they took this off my ticket without even asking when I didn't ask for it to go. Thanks for a really great local breakfast option!

Our server Hailey was very bubbly and welcoming from the start. She made sure we took our time to figure out what we all wanted. Took my dad out for early father's day lunch. We all got sweet tea. Husband went with the all you can eat chicken option. Which they do that on Wednesdays and Sundays. You can mix/match dark or white meat. You get all the sides. Dumplings, mashed potatoes, greenbeans, corn, coleslaw, and apple sauce. He was full and definitely enjoyed the chicken. My dad did the chicken meal 2 dinner with 2 sides. I have food left over for later. I was so full. Food came out in timely manner. And for what we paid in total with 3 people wasnt too shabby. Theor parking lot is off to the side and wraps around l. They do have aome street side parking. Or some park across the way in a lot. Good ol days Is a staple in new baden. When you're burnt out on going to chains like cracker barrel. The line wasn't too long, but I did notice it's set up a little differently than I remember. They now use more of the building, so the line runs down the hallway and loops into the restaurant, with two ordering counters available. While you're waiting, they have menus to look at and even a QR code if you'd rather pull it up on your phone. We ended up waiting about 10 minutes before ordering. Once we got to the counter, everything moved quickly. The staff member helped us right away and let us know they'd bring the food out to our table, which I was glad hasn't changed. One thing I did notice is that the original ordering/dining area is no longer open for seating, it looks like it's now used for staff and possibly catering/to-go orders. They have their drink station available for self-service and offer sodas and sweet and unsweet tea options as well as water. Luckily, there's still plenty of seating in the newer dining area, plus a good number of outdoor tables if you want to sit at a picnic table and enjoy the weather. Within a few minutes, we heard our names called and our food came out fast. And honestly, it was just as good as ever. I was especially happy with the sweet potato fries, and even though applesauce isn't anything fancy, it's kind of the perfect side for me at Pappy's. I ended up eating about half of my meal and boxing the rest up for dinner later, which is always a win. Overall, such a great spot, and I'm really glad it's so close to work. Definitely still a fan and will keep going back.

This was my first time going to this restaurant and I've been wanting to try for about a year now…read more When I arrived the food smell good and the place looked clean and the staff was very friendly. We looked over the menu and we ended up ordering fried catfish, fried Green tomatoes, and fried pork chops. I also got a side order of mac and cheese and mashed potatoes and gravy and fried okra. The fried green tomatoes came out and I felt like they were overcooked very mushy inside. The outer banner was very crunchy and cooked well the inside didn't really have much taste. The menu said they would serve it with a ranch dressing but it ended up being some other type of reddish sweet and sour type creamy dressing. It was ok. The pork chops we're dry and the meat tasted old. I think they need to change their meat supplier. The mashed potatoes taste it like I had a ton of garlic powder. In my opinion a restaurant should never use garlic powder but instead use fresh garlic in their dishes. It's really easy just to throw cloves of garlic in the potatoes as you're boiling them. Or roast them. I was burping up garlic for several hours after I left. You can often judge a soul food restaurant by their mac and cheese. The mac and cheese was baked but the cheese sauce tasted like nacho cheese sauce. Or some type of ready-made cheese sauce. And they just mixed up the cheese sauce with some elbow pasta, threw some American cheese on top and threw it in the oven. It was not the worst mac and cheese I ever had but it was definitely not good. The restaurant was very clean and I like their decor. Ray came out talking to customers and checking on their satisfaction. He was nice and I didn't have the heart to give him bad news. But I really believe unless they fix their recipes and show more imagination that they're not going to make it. Lighten up on the salt. The food was too salty. I wanted to try their sweet potato pie but after me and disappointed by all the other dishes I changed my mind. I probably won't be going back. 65 bucks for dinner for two.
