Spinach salad. (That's the small. And it's freaking huge!) The dressing is house made and freaking fantastic.

The portions are well worth the money. The staff is always friendly and attentive. The management run this place well. Yeah it does get loud in the evenings and the weekends. It's a bar... duh... but it's not overpowering loud. It's a really chill place. 10/10 would recommend

Split review here... The food was delicious, especially that dessert! The building itself is way cool! Makes for a great ambiance, with the trains running right next to it. BUT, the service was HORRIBLE. We had to go find the waitress anytime we needed anything. Over and over again. Really a shame.

Mahi Mahi and flash fried spinach was delicious

What a great variety of choices. I love the menu here. Ive been missing Gacamole bites and I found them here !! The Mahi Mahi was cooked perfectly. As usual I have a picky order but everything was PERFECT !! The waitstaff are all VERY helpful, not just with the patrons but they all seem to get along together helping eachother out !! I love it. The atmosphere is just what the name says, railshake, its right by the tracks so expect a train The drink menu is extensive !!! A variety of Delicious martinis, beers, whiskys and more. The dessert was AWESOME I almost forgot to take a pic of it !!!

Awesome Cajun style restaurant with a unique history that dates back to the 1800's. The owner (Teffy) is nothing short of amazing who's in the kitchen cooking her TOO DIE FOR food. Between soup flights, rotating weekend specials and live music this place is hands down awesome! AND they were recently just featured in "America's Best Restaurants". They also have a HUGE dog friendly patio close to the railroad tracks so your kiddos will have a great time watching them go by!

    Pretzels with cheese sauce

Ordered Gumbo, pretzels, shrimp po boy, and chicken pizza for lunch. Gumbo was outstanding with some good heat, large chunks of meat, and fresh veggies. I would have liked a German mustard instead of the cheese sauce for the pretzels but they were fine. Po Boy needed more zip and a different roll- too much white bread with no character. Pizza was fine. Will return for the awesome gumbo and interested in jambalaya, but that is a dinner only item.

Andouille sausage po' boy with hush puppies

Got the alligator bites for an appetizer. Nicely seasoned batter, and the alligator was tender. Way too many places bring this out and the alligator is rubbery - so good on Railshake. Andouille sausage po' boy was my main. Very tasty with large/long sausage and lots of good fillings 'n sauce. Hush puppies side were on the spot, too.

Salmon over flash fried spinach, roasted potatoes and fresh veggies.

The salmon special was delicious and arrived piping hot. The outdoor patio is always a great place to sit--especially when you bring the little kids. Sidewalk chalk is a big hit and kids can wander a bit without getting into trouble. Service was good--they seemed to have enough workers for a crowd. Others had andouille poor boy, which looked great although the hush puppies were cool on the inside. Nice place for a family to enjoy good weather and good food.

First things first - Railshake is not really a brewery. Well, they don't make it at the actual place - their beer is actually brewed somewhere in Belleville...whatever. Still, its a decent place, located right by the railroad tracks as you're heading into the downtown part of Highland. When you walk in, you'll probably notice it has an "old smell" from the building, which was different. It has a great atmosphere, and the servers are friendly. Not dirty at all, and not too fancy. Railshake has plenty of craft beer options to choose from on tap, as well as their own Porter brew (that's something to ask your server about). Their menu is impressive, and there are plenty of options, including plenty of cajun-flavored foods. I've had their turkey-bacon avocado wrap and their blue-cheese burger along with their fries, and both were great-tastin'. There's so many I would love to try in the future. Classic rock is blasting, as the jukebox is set that way, I believe. They have a cool tribute (painted on the wall by the bar) to Schott Brewery, one of Highland's long-defunct breweries. One oddity I noticed while sitting at the bar: they have a refrigerated part all over the bar where you can put your drink in the iced area! (Not to sound like a caveman, but that's the first place I've ever seen such thing!) Besides the parking in front of the building, there is a decent-sized lot just off of 5th Street. Give this place a shot, as this is probably the closest Highland has as far as microbreweries.

Special of the night: Blacked Tuna on a bed of white rice topped with blacked shrimp and a homemade sweet n spicy sauce.

My husband I were a little reluctant to eat here because it seemed many of the reviews on here were from years ago. We really wanted to try a new restaurant so we went anyway. All I can say is I'm so glad that we did! What a wonderful experience! He got the special that night and it was absolutely phenomenal. I got the pick 2 with the BLT and homemade gumbo. The gumbo had the most amazing flavor ever! The ambiance of the restaurant is very nice and rustic. After we ate, we sat outside on their patio (wish I would've gotten pictures of the patio), it's a wonderful spacious patio, probably the best in Highland. If you're looking for something new I would highly recommend Railshake! We will for sure be back!

Since there were no clams, I went for the Catfish Basket. The Catfish Basket had multiple catfish fritters, steak fries and two hush puppies. They also provided a cup full of sliced onions and pickles. Plus, a small serving of Remoulade. I enjoyed the cajun breading on the catfish, it had a flavorful spicy kick. The steak fries were cut fat and thick and I liked the seasoning. For me, they could have been crispier. The Hush Puppies were good, but I was disappointed when I saw a box of Classic Hush Puppies being delivered by their supplier. Homemade Hush Puppies are so much more flavorful. They've been promoting, Barq's Creme Soda on FB and Creme Soda was a favorite when I was growing up, so I couldn't resit ordering one. It was cool, refreshing and brought back flashes of memories. Oh, it was also a great accompaniment beverage to my Lent dinner. Customer Service is good, because chances are you will be waited on by one of the owners. The Crab Cakes, Messy Wedges, and Crawfish Ravioli were all amazing. The rice was slightly undercooked, but the sauce and main ingredients were absolutely delicious. Since it was our first visit, we ordered directly from the menu. We later noticed many other guests ordering the lobster mac & cheese--which we definitely would have tried (and even taken to go) had we known about it sooner. After realizing we had forgotten dessert, we placed an order for two slices of King Cake to go about 15 minutes after our lunch order. Unfortunately, this took an additional 45 minutes to receive. Be prepared for longer waits--anywhere from 20 to 60 minutes for food. The staff that day seemed a bit overwhelmed and struggled with ticket organization. Several customers picking up pre-ordered King Cakes were told it would be at least an hour, or staff couldn't locate their orders. We also witnessed a couple of customers return because half of their orders were missing. It was Mardi Gras weekend, so definitely a peak time, and the staff clearly could have used more support. That said, everyone remained patient and understanding through the hiccups. Would I come back? Absolutely. The food was excellent, and the turtle King Cake slices were incredible! I'd recommend having a visible board listing daily specials, available "by-the-slice" King Cake flavors, and dessert or donut options. There were so many things we would have loved to try but didn't realize were available. Overall, a great hidden gem with fantastic food--and tons of potential as things smooth out.

Pretty chill atmosphere, right off the bat - no uniforms for the servers just comfy clothing. We chose one of the rooms, just opposite the bar. Alexis quickly greeted us and served us our drinks. As we waited for her to come back to take our order, I admired the cool decor. It's very farm-esque, of course, as Millstadt is a farming town. Paintings of farm animals, vintage Coca Cola signs, etc. The music was lightly playing near the bar and it was pretty busy in there but not loud. Big screens above the bar played racing and the TV's were on near us but I could barely hear the sound, just closed captioned. I appreciated the fact that I could really enjoy my time with my dad and be able to hear him. I ordered a cup of chili and Cesar salad combo. I was very impressed with the chili! It's a go-to and if the chili impresses- I'm bound to try other things at any restaurant. It had just the right amount of kick and great flavor. The Cesar salad was off to me; it was drenched in Cesar salad dressing, the croutons at the bottoms and very little lettuce. However, the flavor of the dressing impressed, it was just too much for me. I would definitely order the salad again, but be sure and ask for the dressing on the side.. which is totally my mistake because I usually do and forgot this time. Overall, it was very tasty. My dad, being from the south, knows his gumbo! He ordered it to try, along with the pulled pork sandwich and fries. From first bite, he kept saying how good everything was. He said the gumbo was probably the best he's had from any restaurant. He was just as impressed with the pork and said it was fantastic. The guy isn't even into sauces and complimented that as well. The fries were crispy, that goodness because the guy doesn't play with crap fries. :) Overall, the service was great - Alexis was excellent! A sweet young lady, super fast and attentive. And it's always an A+ when I see a waitress be super kind with my dad. Well, done, Alexis! When we were ready to pay, she was busy with the manager and the nice bartender gal came over and took our check - it was nice to not leave us waiting. Very mindful staff, good customer service & that speaks volumes! Flavorful, all around! Pretty cool place. We will be back to try more on the menu. GREAT JOB, Spike's!

We rolled into Gulf Shores ready for bold Cajun flavors, loose vibes, and a little bayou magic --…read moreand while not everything slapped like a Zydeco drum, we still had ourselves a real good time. Now listen... for me, the flavors didn't quite punch me in the mouth the way true Cajun food should. I wanted a little more "who made this roux and how long did they stir it?" energy. BUT -- and this matters -- everything was fresh, well-cooked, and genuinely delicious. No frozen-tasting foolishness, just good seafood done right. I just wanted the seasoning to turn the volume knob up a notch or three. The seating situation started off a little sideways, like a crawfish running from the boil, but we got it wrangled and after that the night smoothed out just fine. Let's talk sides. Baby... these sides were small for the price. And look -- St. Louis has so many great spots where you get quality and value. The county can be tricky like that: the food delivers, but the prices sometimes think they're partying on Bourbon Street during peak Mardi Gras. Now I gotta say something that stayed with me all night -- that fish tank broke my heart. Those fish looked lonely. If you're gonna have a tank, give them some friends, some sparkle, maybe toss in a bead or two -- make it FUN. Right now it's giving "sad aquarium waiting for parade season." Tonic report from the bar: whew -- that tonic was way too sweet for my taste. My gin was confused, I was confused, so I tapped out and switched to iced tea, which did me just right. One thing I truly appreciated -- the owner is very personable and stopped by our table to say hello, which always earns major points. That kind of hospitality matters and adds to the experience. And here's my loving suggestion: lean HARD into Mardi Gras season. It's a BIG deal here in the Lou, and this place is perfectly set up for it. Beads, music, specials, colors, chaos -- give us a reason to yell laissez les bons temps rouler before the appetizers even hit the table. BUT HOLD UP -- because the real star of the night was our server Brittany, and baby... she was an absolute QUEEN Warm, fun, attentive, and made the whole night feel like a party. We laughed, we relaxed, and we had a blast. Brittany is the kind of server who makes you want to come back -- and maybe order dessert even when you swore you were done. All in all, Gulf Shores brings fresh seafood, good vibes, and Cajun-adjacent comfort. Turn the seasoning up, give the fish some friends, lean into Mardi Gras, rethink the tonic -- and if Brittany's in your section? You're already winning.

It's the rare occasion when I get to visit a restaurant that was featured on the TV show "Diners,…read moreDrive-ins and Dives," and it's a true privilege. I don't take it lightly. I spent a lot of time preparing. My mom even made me a special outfit. Remember, in the movie Goodfellas, when Joe Pesci thought he was about to become a made guy? It was kind of like that. Fortunately, I wasn't led into an empty room where I was promptly shot in the back of the head. (Whew!) I was conscious of the potential for violence at Hwy 61 Roadhouse, because its name--and the overall vibe--calls to mind the classic Patrick Swayze movie from the 1980s, which was in fact set in Missouri. I was ready to punch my way out of there, if necessary. The crowd here skews older, and it occurred to me that I may have been able to take out quite a few of them on my own. There was live music, and the band called to mind something you might see in a circa-'97 Christopher Guest movie, or Marty and Bobbi Culp. It gets loud, to the point where you can't hear what the person across the table from you is saying. You might consider bringing a date here, if you'd prefer not having a conversation. A guy from my running group loves this place and spoke highly of the BBQ Spaghetti. Normally, I wouldn't eat anything like that, but this guy seems like he might know ball when it comes to delicious restaurant meals, if you catch my drift. Turns out, he wasn't wrong. It wasn't just good, this might be the way to eat pulled pork. I'd make it at home, except that store-bought barbecue sauce is disgustingly sweet and processed-tasting, and it wouldn't be worth trying to make my own. I toyed with the idea of getting a burger, which is a safe go-to in restaurants in areas where the spice level is often inquired about, but I've eaten so many of them lately. Then I saw that they carry a Shrimp Po Boy. It seemed like the perfect choice. Shrimp Po Boys are never not good, even the one they used to carry at Popeyes during Lent back in the pre-chicken sandwich era, and this place supposedly specializes in Cajun food. It didn't disappoint... for the most part. It was a bit bread-forward for my liking. Some places hollow out the bread a little bit, to make room for the fillings. Hwy 61 doesn't, and they use a weirdly large roll. I love bread, so this wouldn't necessarily be an issue, but there was nothing particularly special about this bread. They load you up on shrimp, which are fried hard, like chicken wings from a hood Chinese place. It makes for a satisfying crunch. The lettuce and tomatoes provided a fresh, healthy-seeming contrast, and the remoulade is just spicy enough to keep things interesting. I'm definitely curious to try some of the other menu items, including some of the more authentic Cajun selections--the etouffees, gumbos and what have you. If only I could get them to bring me a sampling of everything, "on the arm." I'd show up in backwards sunglasses and tell them I'm there filming a TV show, but alas, they've already been featured on a TV show, and I wouldn't want to run the risk of having to actually fight someone.
