I tried to get a job here and I was 16 and the owner talked political to me we have the same political views(him and my parents) but I don't think it's appropriate to talk politics to a 16 year old when ur interviewing them.Very clean place and very nice overall. We arrived just before our reservation. Kind of worried as there was no one in the dining room side although there were a few people on the bar side. The waitress seated us next to the fireplace, glad they didn't have it on. The menu on the table was different than what was on line. I had the ribeye with mashed potatoes and broccoli and house salad. My house salad was a vinaigrette, more oil than vinegar. She had the onion soup, had a different cheese than what you would expect. she had the veal with shrimp and scallops. Her veal lacked flavor and the scallops were very small and the shrimp were okay. My ribeye needed to be trimmed of the gristle, the onions on top offered little flavor and even though it was medium rare wasn't juicy. The best part was the mashed potatoes. The Bloody Mary was good as was her lemon drop martini. The waitress was friendly. read more

The atmosphere was so nice & comfortable with the fireplace going & the piano player. Our meals were very good. There were 6 in our party & each had a different dinner. My meal was a bit salty and the bruschetta was salty. Our service was fantastic! I don't think our water glasses got halfway empty ever. It was my husband's birthday and they brought him a piece of cake then they gave each of us a free piece of cake. We haven't been there before and they gave us a tour of the whole place. I have come to Michael's for years and each time they go out of their way to make sure absolutely everything is perfect. Mr. Michael himself even came out tonight to make sure the prime rib was to our liking. It's easy to overlook that Highland offers anything more than fast food, pizza or bar food; so Michael's Restaurant is a bit of a forgotten gem. Even as a Highland native, I didn't start frequenting the restaurant until the last couple years. The owner takes a lot of pride in the food they serve, and it shows. Without a doubt, they serve the best prime rib in town and I can't say that I've ever been less than impressed with any of our orders. The atmosphere lends itself to a causal evening out on the bar side, or a romantic dinner on the fine dining side. Love, love, love this place! 5/5 read more

Went here for the first time a few weeks ago for a belated Fathers Day dinner as Highland is a good halfway point for us and my family. This will def be our "go to" place from now on. Drinks and app were good, soup was different but good. Atmosphere is definitely old school and nostalgic. My sister and I had the medallions pasta special which was really different and tasty. Our dad had the eggplant parmigiana which wasn't on the current menu, but we had seen it pictured online and luckily were able to get it. Looked great. My husband had the Ribeye, which I tasted and OMG I am going back just for that. Best Ribeye I've tasted in years! And the bread pudding was so decadent I could only eat half of it. Only negative was our daughters salmon which she said really had no flavor. Looking forward to our next visit! read more

I'm not sure if all these reviews are by family or friends but very mis leading. Visited there a little while ago and still leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Service was terrible! Waiter was so annoyed that we were even there! I had the soup and it was so salty I could not eat it and the sandwhich bread was so dry I couldn't eat that as well without a gallon of water. But who would I ask cause the waiter was MIA. The decor is dated and I'm sure the carpets are alive with all kinds of things. Yes they have booze and yes a hotel so that must be the lure. Cause it can't be the food or prices cause that inedible soup and sandwhich was 20! read more

A weeks ago, Wednesday my wife and I decided to stop at Michael's and have a couple apps at the bar and a cocktail. The bar service was great! We had a rare tuna appetizer and stuffed mushrooms florentine. Delicious. We noticed that their Wed. special is dinner for two with Bruschette for an appetizer, house salad, any entree from the menu excluding Lobster tail and desert with two glasses of wine, all this for $50! Yesterday we returned for the special. Bruschetta was delicious, a little different than what I'm used to. It was prepared warm with melted Mozzarella basil and tomatoes. The salad was nice, mixed greens. I ordered the Strip steak medium rare. It was cooked perfectly. My wife ordered the Salmon. The serving portion was very generous, light, flaky. We had the bread pudding for desert and it was also wonderful. Dan was our server and excellent. He was very attentive, timed our food perfectly. Kept our drinks refilled. I could tell Dan has been there for awhile. The table next to ours were regulars and Dan remembered their preferences, who wanted dressing on the side, what kind of lettuce they preferred, favorite entree's, etc. Obviously a professional server with excellent skills. We will back soon to take advantage of this great deal for another wonderful dining experience! read more

Well, my wife and I went with two other couples on a So IL weekend to Royal Lake, and wound up here for Sunday dinner about 7:00 PM, we had seen a public interest story about them on KSDK Channel Five and made a point of going in while we were there. Other than the fact that they over cooked everything, and our waiter was as slow as Christmas, it was good. Wonderful atmosphere in the restaurant. They were not packed with diners when we were there though, so we didn't understand the long wait for the service. There were a lot of empty tables for 7:00 PM The appetizers were good and brought out fast, Toasted Ravioli, Shrimp Cocktail, and Wild Mushroom Strudels. I got the Salmon and my friend's wife got the Walleye. Both were over cooked and dry. The other couples got the chicken Marsala and Bistro Chicken. The one unusual dish was the Veal Saltimbocca, all were over cooked and floating in sauce. Why I don't know. The veal was so wet the crumbs were not crunchy, but it may have been because it took so long to get the dishes out that night. They did have a good selection of wines and mixed drinks from the bar however. read more

Great service! House cabernet is great and awesome cosmos! We had a few drinks at the bar and had the grilled chicken sandwich with pepper jack cheese and toasted ravioli. Both plates were cleared and our glasses were always full. We will sit how at a table next time and try out the full menu. Very nice and clean inside. read more

A very old style restaurant. Their strip steak had a lot of tendon or ligament in it, but the flavor was good. I couldn't eat half of what was on my plate. I should've ordered the Filet instead. Their Onion soup and raspberry iced tea was fantastic. The service was good. read more

The dearth of substantive reviews should be tip off #1. This is "fine" dining if you're 85. Some of the culinary combinations are reminescent of old steak houses whose time has long since passed but whose clientele hang on out of stubborn dedication. I was surprised by our appetizer and dessert only; the rest of our meal was desultory at best, including the instant potatoes (come on guys). The staff was superb, if not acutely conscious of the decline of their workplace and (erstwhile) beloved dinner spot. I needn't go further. No need to put a bullet in a terminal patient--just let it die on its own. read more

Just had a wonderful time in Highland at Michael's Easter buffet. The ambiance was great, the service amazing and the food was delicious! I've been there before, but not on Easter. They even had a pianist playing while we were there (she's there on Friday nights as well). There was a wide variety of food available, so everyone in our party found numerous choices to satisfy each individual's taste... from the salad through the main course to dessert, it was delightful! Saw the reviews and had to check it out. My party of three arrived at 5pm and was seated quickly. The building inside and out was dated but the tables were set like what you would expect at a fine dining establishment. I ordered one of the specials...2 filet tenderloins with melted provolone and ham. Those sat on a bed of angel hair pasta and a white wine mushroom sauce over the top. I opted for the tomato basil soup. My wife order the prime rib (seared) baked potato and salad. My daughter had the filet tenderloin with a side of pasta w/ marinara and the tomato basil soup s well. Soup and salad came out and looked great. Salad was nicely dressed, crisp and cold. The piping hot tomato basil soup was excellent. Deep flavors and just outstanding. The entrees followed and they were impressive. My entree was a huge portion and cooked to perfection. I would have liked a little more of the white wine sauce but it tasted great. My wife enjoyed her perfectly cooked prime rib and was also a pretty substantial cut of meat. My daughter's filet was cooked to perfection and delicious. They brought out a dessert tray with their offerings...i had the apple chocolate bread pudding and my daughter has the triple chocolate cake. the cake was wonderful and the bourbon sauced bread pudding was one of the best i have had. The service was great and next time i will sample the wine list. Definitely recommend Michael's to anyone wanting a great, slightly upscale meal. Tops in the area! read more
