Typically, I am not a fan of buffet style breakfast. However, I will say that Hickory Grove has won me over with theirs. The offerings are limited, but they are the most popular breakfast items. Also, the staff is extremely attentive to the buffet and keeps it not only well stocked, but clean and well organized. The buffet started with fresh fluffy biscuits and milk gravy with sausage. It also had; scrambled eggs, hash browns, scrambled omelette, american fries, link sausage, bacon, patty sausage, french toast, waffles, pancakes and carve-able ham. They even had a bowl of fresh fruit. I took a sampling of everything and for buffet food, it was as good as if it were made to order and brought to my table. The servers are friendly and did frequent table checks to make sure everything was satisfying. My coffee cup was topped off on the regular, so it was always warm. HG isn't a true diner, but it's a restaurant that specializes in comfort foods. read more

Hickory Grove reminds me so much of the family run diners that populate Chicago and its suburbs. There's nothing fancy here--just good food, capable staff, something-for-everybody menus, and plenty of good value meals. My lunch included grilled-in-its juices chicken breast, green beans loaded with diced bacon, and a simple iceberg lettuce salad where the homemade croutons elevated the dish from blah to pizzazz. My server was competent, even quickly noticing and resolving the vegetable omission when someone else brought just the chicken. This senior lunch was under $9, including tax but before tip. A friend and I came here for lunch. They are open for breakfast, lunch and supper. A lot to choose from on their menu. They have several daily specials. Today I had a salad and a bowl of stuffed pepper soup. The soup was delicious. Salad was topped with homemade croutons. My friend had the Philly cheesesteak sandwich. We eat here a couple of times a month. The food is usually pretty good and most of the wait staff are good -with the exception of one. Don't know her name but she asked me today if I was done with my salad before I had time to eat it. She then asked if we wanted any dessert about two minutes after getting our main course I told her no croutons and no tomato on my salad - got both. Had to flag her down to get a refill on my coffee when they weren't even busy and she was filling condiments on tables! Kind of sorry I left any tip at all! read more

First time trying out this place today. I can see without a doubt why they have five stars. The restaurant was clean and a friendly waitress greeted us upon arrival telling us to seat ourselves. The menu is large and can be a bit overwhelming for some, but for me, there was so much that caught my eye that I was having trouble not just choosing everything. I went with the Monte Cristo with fries and the mozzarella sticks as an appetizer. The food came out promptly. The mozzarella sticks had a nice pull and were tasty. The sandwich though was a smash hit. Layers of turkey, ham, and cheese all packed in a nice French bread. It had me coming back for bite after bite. Two weeks ago, I would have recommended this restaurant. Now, after two separate bad experiences in a row, I will never go back and I will never recommend this restaurant to anyone. Two weeks ago, I went in with my family of 6. The owner said he would pull two tables together, and we were happy to wait. A server came over a few minutes later and said there was a table set up for a party of 6. I told her that we weren't the party it was reserved for, but she insisted it was okay. She explained that the party had called two hours before and then never showed up. So, we sat down. About 5 minutes later, the owner came over and became very irate. He said that the table was for someone else. I explained to him that the server told us to sit, even though I said we would wait. He became even more frustrated and stormed off. The server apologized to me and said he is just grumpy. Every time he would pass our table, he would stare us down. Tonight, as we were approaching the doors with only 4 of us, he saw us and immediately said something to his host and stormed off. When we came in, the sign said to seat yourself, so we sat in the booth right next to the front door. The host brought menus over, but ignored us when we spoke to him. 15 minutes later, we were still sitting there with no drinks and the host just staring at us. I overheard the servers talking about our table, and saying how we would have to wait for drinks. We decided to leave right then and there. We ended up going to The Round Table, where our server got our drinks before we were even seated. It's sad, because we really liked this place. read more
