Summary: A traditional, family style diner with a large menu of breakfast, lunch, dinner, and dessert options. Hickory Grove reminds me so much of the family run diners that populate Chicago and its suburbs. There's nothing fancy here--just good food, capable staff, something-for-everybody menus, and plenty of good value meals. My lunch included grilled-in-its juices chicken breast, green beans loaded with diced bacon, and a simple iceberg lettuce salad where the homemade croutons elevated the dish from blah to pizzazz. My server was competent, even quickly noticing and resolving the vegetable omission when someone else brought just the chicken. This senior lunch was under $9, including tax but before tip. Credit cards accepted but there is a surcharge when not paying cash.

A friend and I came here for lunch. They are open for breakfast, lunch and supper. A lot to choose from on their menu. They have several daily specials. Today I had a salad and a bowl of stuffed pepper soup. The soup was delicious. Salad was topped with homemade croutons. My friend had the Philly cheesesteak sandwich. It was toasted, she said it was really good. Iced tea to go with my meal, refreshing.

Country Skillet. No tomatoes. Eggs Sunny Side Up. Wheat toast with grape jelly.

The gyro is really good. Wish I could have the option for either only lamb or beef/lamb mix. Service was good and food came out fast.

However, this review is about them, so let me focus on them only. If you go to Post Commons, you gotta get a biscuit. Their biscuits are homemade and they are delicious. My personal favorite biscuit sandwich is the Sausage. In addition to the sausage patty, it has cream cheese and pepper jam. The pepper jam is what really makes this sammie special. If you're wanting a more hearty breakfast, you can create your own plate with items from the A La Carte menu. I've created one with two scrambled eggs, bacon and breakfast potatoes. The potatoes are cut into little cubes and fried to a crispy golden color. It's a great place to meet friends for a cup of coffee. The staff is cordial and makes you feel welcomed. Why go to a chain coffee shop, when you have a unique one in a old post office building? There is, no reason to go. When: February 4, 2026 Why: Biscuit Sandwich

Knowledge and willing to share ingredients and labels as she helped me order Gluten/Dairy/Sugar free. We had yummy greens with eggs and turkey sausage (hold the croutons). The poppyseed vinaigrette was dairy free and just perfect. My matcha latte and Clyde's coffee latte were delicious. Troy had pizza and he loved the crust ( he had regular but they DO offer GF crust AND vegan cheese!). Sam's French Toast looked amazing in all its gluten-filled glory. We also tried the immunity shots from CJ's Juicery and they were dynamite. If we still lived here full time I'd be making the drive over from STL once a week for that breakfast salad and matcha. The menu is varied and thoughtful, altho I would love to see them find a way to offer at least one gluten free bread (I bet their avocado toast rocks!). I understand it is not an easy undertaking for small kitchens to manage proper handling of GF if it's not their focus. However I promise those on a restricted diet can absolutely find something here due to Hannah's expertise.

Got there and got a little concerned the parking lot only had a couple of cars. While I was finishing my phone call, I saw several people walking out with carry-out. I went in, the sign said to seat yourself, so I slid into one of the booths. There were several tables filled with diners. My waitress arrived at the booth quickly and gave me a menu. I ordered coffee and asked to have time to glance over the menu. I knew what I wanted, but it was a new menu since my last visit and I was curious if there was anything new. It pretty much the same, but the new one looks way better. I went with the, Pancake Combo. It includes two of each; pancakes, eggs, bacon and sausage links. The pancakes were huge and fluffy. I think they are some of the best pancakes served at local diners. My eggs were prepared hard and I requested the yolk to be broken. I then added some of their house branded hot sauce for an extra kick. The bacon and sausage were just, okay. They were cold, it was obvious both had been made ahead of time. It would have been a great breakfast if they were fried fresh. Now the explanation of the seeing the carry-outs. While I dined I saw the different waitresses place bags on a rack next to the door. After they placed a bag, shortly thereafter a person would come in and grab it and go. Seeing this tells me, they do some serious Grub-Hub business. The service was good my waitress was attentive and I loved her funky glasses. Dining room was clean and looks like it had a facelift since my last visit and it's looking good.

On the menu, it states, "Do not expect your food to come quick, this is not a fast food restaurant..." Though on the day we ate there, it was 6 of us in the party, when three of us ordered burgers w/Fries, one person a Slinger and 2 of us the Steak and eggs breakfast. We arrived there at 11:10 and got served our meals at 1:10. Sooo you could imagine, it was a bit of a wait. Mind you the place closed at 2pm. I did grab a bag of their day-old donuts and a cherry pie on the way out, which were exceptional, but the wait. It's hard to want to come back to wait 2 hours for your meals. Though the staff was kind, and the restaurant is small and quaint, (about 12 tables?), and offers donuts and pie. We didn't expect fine quality steaks either, but what we had were overcooked and chewy, so don't order those, but the burgers and slinger seemed good enough. Mind you this is like a little country kitchen close to Grafton. It's meant to be a place to grab a sandwich with a cup of Joe, and meet up with local friends. So if you don't mind the wait, and in the neighborhood for a coffee and donuts, it's your place.

Morrison's Irish Pub - Alton, IL…read more We finally stopped into Morrison's and it delivered that cozy, old-world Irish pub charm you want when you walk through those doors. I had the Irish cheese sandwich, Justin went with the corned beef -- and both were genuinely good. Comforting, hearty, and exactly what you hope for in a pub meal. Now... the kitchen was moving a bit slow this visit. Was it noticeable? Yes. Was it worth the wait? Also yes. Because Sam -- the female bartender -- absolutely made the experience. Fun, engaging, and the kind of personality that makes you feel like you're already a regular even if it's your first visit. That kind of service turns a "slow day" into a good memory. The menu is packed with authentic Irish favorites, and honestly, next time we're absolutely going to lean fully into the classics -- because this feels like a place that does traditional comfort food right. One small wish: I really wish they made their own chips. The bagged chips were a little lackluster and felt like a missed opportunity next to an otherwise hearty, made-with-care menu. Overall: a great spot that was likely just having an off day -- and still absolutely worth your time. Don't leave without ordering the pear cider. It is absolutely fabulous. Bright, crisp, lightly sweet, and dangerously drinkable. We'll be back -- and we're coming hungry.

Thick meaty thighs, curvaceous legs and wings that look as if the chicken has been pumping iron at the local gym. Big pieces, crispy flavorful coating and juicy meat. I primarily do carry-out and the quality of their take out is equally as good as when dining in the restaurant. Pick-up is smooth and fast, as they have a separate entrance and room for take-out. The staff is friendly and very professional. The service has that family owned business feel. If you're a fan of Onion Rings, I recommend enjoying an order as an appetizer. Their rings are super big and made in house. I do not like onion rings that come from a bag. When ordering my sides, I like mashed potatoes with white gravy. They also offer brown gravy, if that is your thing. My other side is always green beans. They make their green beans with bacon and onion. It reminds me of my momma's. With those two sides, it is a true Sunday Chicken Dinner on any day of the week. I've been coming to Castelli's my entire life. I started coming here as a child when it was called, Moonlight. Many of the locals still call it, Moonlight and no-one will correct them, because we all know where they are talking about. Service in the carry-out room is always speedy and friendly. So if you're a fan of fried chicken, I recommend ordering on-line for a pick-up. Or, treat yourself to a night out and dine in the restaurant. Remember to order the onion rings.
